I type (Repair filesystem) 32 #mount And it looks like all mount points are (rw) I try to edit /etc/fstab but when I save it I get told that the filesystem is READ ONLY.

fdisk will not write to this /dev/sr1 partition

I have ntfs partition installed bran new ubuntu system. I have some problem with unrar utf8 character zip files.Then i change my fstab file that uses files in D:ubuntudisks oot.disk and i added with out no fearless Code: ,utf8 and after all now i can't boot my linux system it does not allow me to change anything in fstab file. Although i use as a prefix sudo or as a root "sudo -i" commands I dont have any right to change it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have XP, Win7 Pro and F 11 installed. Before I installed F 11, Win 7 boot mgr was working fine. I then installed F 11 and I went to System/Admin/bootloader to edit it and it wouldn't bring up the boot loader. In the attachment was the error msg. Now my only option when I boot up is F 11.
I do not have access to the Win 7 DVD only the F 11 install disk since I am on a fishing trip and need to use Win 7. How can I repair to the grub boot loader to boot into Win 7?

Trying to read the fstab file using code...
So why can't I read the fstab file?
I really need some help here, this is driving me mad. I edited my fstab file to boot a partition on start up, only instead of typing sda7 I typed sda1 by mistake and now can't boot.
The problem that is driving me mad is I cannot save changes to fstab from a live cd because I do not have root permissions.
I am relatively new to Linux and have no idea how to use the fedora install disk or the commands to use or if it will let me save changes to the file.
I cannot believe something so easy to fix does not appear to be possible because i can't save changes to the fstab on my fedora install.
I've edited /etc/fstab to auto-mount two partitions on a new disk drive that have been formatted as ext3, by appending the following two lines:
/dev/sdb1 /bak1 ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/sdb2 /bak2 ext3 defaults 1 1
On reboot, the system complains there is some problem (I can't advise what the problem is, because the display scrolls up too fast to read!), and I'm left with a root command prompt.
Its a /etc/fstab problem, presumably. I've used vi to edit /etc/fstab to remove the two lines mentioned above, but on quit and save, I'm told I have a read-only file system!
1. How can I mount a read-write file system so I can edit /etc/fstab?
2. What's wrong with my two new entries in /etc/fstab? After formatting /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdb2, I checked the they were mountable with # mount /dev/sdbn /bakn (n = 1, 2) before editing fstab.
I was unable to boot into Ubuntu 9.1 today because the file system is now read only. When I check fstab, it shows "ro" but I can't change it because it's on a read only file system. I tried umounting the root then remounting with read/write access, but I was unable to umount the root. I also tried booting with a live CD, but all I can find is the root.disk file, I can't see any of the file structure. That's probably just how it is supposed to be, but I'm new to Linux so I found it strange. method to either change the disk to read/write besides this?sudo umount /mount -o remount,rw /The other option would be to somehow mount the disk image while using a live CD so that I can get to the fstab file and edit it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to work out how to set up Fedora 15 to automatically mount an NFS share at boot time. I can mount the share interactively using 'mount -t nfs server:/usr/local /usr/local'. When I put the entry in /etc/fstab, it stops the machine booting. It tries to give me a shell ('Enter root password for shell or press Control-D to exit') or something close to that. However, I cannot enter the maintenance mode, it hangs. Same thing with pressing control-D, it hangs and doesn't get any further.
I rescued the system by booting off a CD, mounting root, and removing the nfs entry from fstab. After that it booted fine. The entry I had in the fstab is: nfsserver:usr/local /usr/localnfsro,hard,bg,intr,comment=systemd.automount0 0
I put the 'comment=systemd.automount' entry in because of some related searches I did in forums.
1. I accidentally removing /etc/fstab
2. reboot
3. It enter gdm/runlevel 5 though several warning complaining missing /etc/fstab (i can post the boot.log if it is needed)
4. I "touch /etc/fstab"
5. reboot (and cannot pass run level 2)
I can enter run level 1, but when after that if I "init 2" it is halted. Most of the boot message (after i create empty fstab with touch) is complaining about read only filesystem.
ps note:
1. I use LVM
2. I don't have access to a live cd until saturday
3. /etc/mtab is empty as well when i checked it in run level 1
I am trying to mount a smb share on an ubuntu machine and for the life of me I can't figure out the fstab entry. The server is running fine and the windows machines can map their shares fine, I just cant figure out the fstab entry for an ubuntu box.at this point the fstab looks like this(although I have tried many variations)

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded ubuntu 10.10 iso, made CD, installed as dual-boot with win Vista home premium and used it for a week to access the 'net and email. Yesterday, while deleting an email, the "d" key stuck down while I was issuing <CTRL>D and the cursor froze. I then rebooted by using the reset button and saw many lines of text including "kernel panic". so I reset and booted into 'repair boot'. Again, many lines of text which stop at the same place if I try this twice.
I assume I've fried my ubuntu install and would like to fix or re-install it. When I installed it, I let the [wubi?] installer make decisions except choice of drive because it picked the external, USB drive. It appears to've used about 80 G on internal drive D: I could boot from the distro CD and see if it will re-install but I'm concerned that I may not fix my problem or that it may mess up my windows installation.
Forgive the terseness. I'm frazzled with this issue, perhaps I should have asked earlier. Every weekend for the past 2 months has been an endless cycle of 'repair broken system' off the install disk.

So that's a not very user friendly to start with.
I've tried the suggestions about UUID in fstab tried using LABEL instead, or even /dev/xxx. Every time it hangs. I've googled this endlessly and not found a solution. So don't ask why... since I seem to have tried every odd suggestion to fix this, I've lost track. There seems to be some consensus that whoever gave us plymouth laid an egg. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but did we need a better graphical boot if it breaks everything else?

all of a sudden my pc decided no to start anymore.YOu might be aware of the ide/sata driver problem, well it was the problem. I reinstalled grub with suse dvd and it went ok. Pc working properly. But then i tried to fix this once for all and changed the fstab options from /dev-by-id to uuid (all partitions : swap, /, /home etc ).Is uuid a definite solution ?Why is the pc not able to start from there ?
Since i moved the partitions with uuid option in fstab and even after reinstalling grub the pc is not starting anymore . It gives me the boot menu (linux suse/failsafe) and then a black screen left with no keyboard nor mouse available.

is it safe to change fstab UUID entry for the system to /dev/sdb4? and after editing fstab, is there a script or command I need to run to release lock or update mount information? edit: I see not correct, and therefore not safe,but is there a format to tell linux to use /dev/sda1 instead of UUID= or label= .

It's something I dislike on Windows. A corrupt structure is likely a hardware problem, and in this case a repair can terribly damage the file system.

But today WXP refuses to boot, when the progress bar appears, the system boots automatically. The WXP CD doesn't help, the repair console doesn't let me run chkdsk or anything (dir C: gives an error about listing addresses or something like that). Is there any way to use fsck or anything in Linux to repair the WXP NTFS partition?

I'm getting the BOOTMGR not found error, that I'm familiar with, but the circumstances surrounding it are completely new to me. In the past I've encountered errors from hard-shutdowns where I couldn't mount the partition, until I checked it with windows first, but I can't boot into windows at all any more. I tend to get constant crashes when using internet browsers ( Google Chrome and Firefox ) basically the application hangs not moving in any way, then eventually completely freezes up, the system then locks up and finally crashes.
Upon system re-start I get "Read Error" at boot ( No further information, it literally just says "Read Error" ).
It is sometimes fixed by going into the BIOS and select "Hold on No Error".
I tried installing OpenBios to see if using different BIOS firmware would resolve the issue, but the OpenBios install failed ....so no dice there either.
I am trying to work out if it is a hard drive problem or if it is purely a problem with Fedora.
It was working fine for a couple of months and when it does boot up ... the system works fine, ( Until another crash ).
It seems like the internet browsers crash the system and then the system crashes and can then no longer remember how to boot up.
what this could be that could be software based....if not it looks like I will need a new hard-drive.
The new GRUB2 was supposed to configure itself from the old grub, but got the kernel image partition wrong.I have booted from Knoppix live cd, but need to write to system files. I have searched, and found several suggestions that apparently work on Win machines, but RO permission for root on Linux is a harder nut to crack.
