The boot sector somehow got messed up on a friends computer while updating. I used to know how to do it with the old version, but now that they've updated it and changed everything , how do you repair the boot sector from a live-CD with Grub 2?
View 5 RepliesI was using the disk utility on Ubuntu 10.04 and wanted to make by 500GB external NTFS formatted USB drive into 1 x 50GB FAT32 and 1 x 450GB NTFS. I clicked the option that said format or create a partition and it basically wiped the whole thing in a split second leaving me with 500GB of seemingly empty space. Obviously the files are still there but I cannot boot the drive to view anything. I have downloaded testdisk, but don't know how to use it, but I am sure there is a relatively simple solution here. I am currently repairing the boot sector of the drive as Test Disk showed the drive as "no type" i.e. not FAT/NTFS/ext4 etc., but shows the correct amount of used space though, but I cannot view anything err go, I cannot use the undelete command as yet.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to repair the GRUB 2 Bootloader by using the LIVE Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 DVD.
Basically I've been unable to boot Linux Ubuntu Ultimate 2.7 ( due to a multi boot set up) & read that it is possible to repair the boot loader by re installing it from the live dvd.
I've already tried to load up the DVD & run the Terminal program - on the command line I type '# grub-restore' & the reply is GRUB not loaded??
I've tried other command lines that are on various other posts but non of them work.
Or are there certain Linux operating system discs that have the function to repair the boot loader from the live dvd.
I have installed fedora 13 x64 using a live cd on my computer But i need to reinstall win7. after installing win 7 grub had been damaged. How can i repair Fedora using Live cd?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am a complete noob at this and I need a hand. I was about to throw my computer out of the window when I decided to throw the windows out of the computer so to speak. So, I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and tried to install. I had a grub rescue after the installation (file system unknown), which I have seen discussed here. Being the noob that I am I decided to try 10.04 because it said it had full support. With this install I get a similar error during installation: grub cannot be installed in boot sector.
So, basically there is an issue with grub and the boot sector. I checked in my BIOS options to see if there was an option that prevented the writing of a boot sector or something, but I have not been able something like that. So, I am wondering if it is possible that Ubuntu does not really erase/format the selected disks or something, leaving any difficulty there.
Does anybody know? Or better yet: what exactly do I need to do a manual grub install?
I have a toshiba notebook with Windows XP and Ubuntu studio. I removed Ubuntu partitions with the idea to install classic Ubuntu, but... grub don't recognize Windows to boot. I formatted the hard disk as slave from another PC. I installed Windows again trying to delete the grub, but, it is already there. I am trying to repair grub from Windows with: FIXBOOT, FIXMBR, fdisk /mbr from MS DOS, but that is not working.
Any suggestions:
- To delete the hard disk complete and start again everything. (deleting grub also)
or
- To repair boot sector for Windows

I have XP, Win7 Pro and F 11 installed. Before I installed F 11, Win 7 boot mgr was working fine. I then installed F 11 and I went to System/Admin/bootloader to edit it and it wouldn't bring up the boot loader. In the attachment was the error msg. Now my only option when I boot up is F 11.
I do not have access to the Win 7 DVD only the F 11 install disk since I am on a fishing trip and need to use Win 7. How can I repair to the grub boot loader to boot into Win 7?
The new GRUB2 was supposed to configure itself from the old grub, but got the kernel image partition wrong.I have booted from Knoppix live cd, but need to write to system files. I have searched, and found several suggestions that apparently work on Win machines, but RO permission for root on Linux is a harder nut to crack.

I believe that I need to reinstall Grub and everything should be fine, and I remember reading the command to do this on this forum, but I can't find it. When I boot, I now get a black screen with white letters instead of the Grub boot menu. It says something about "Minimal Grub" at the top and gives me a prompt that looks like this.

Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?
Can I repair Fedora 14 from the live installation Disk?

I'm now on the live cd, is there anyway to either fix that, or just repair the system? I tried booting in safe mode too, none of those started up either.
I want to use the live cd (Linux mint 9) to do a repair install on my system, but when I start, it says that it has detected another instance of linux and this must be removed before I can continue. I don't want to do this as I have a lot of data on this system and I don't want to lose it. The error occurred when I did a dist-upgrade and installed new kernels. Before I installed the kernels, a message came up saying the following packages are already installed but are no longer required. Use apt-get autoremove to remove them. I did this and now when I boot, I get as far as the five changing dots on the screen and it just stays there. I went into command line and ran apt-get mint-meta-main mint-meta-gnome, and at the end it came up with problem with /etc/utilities/desktop.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed the latest updates earlier today. Instead of restarting I just shut the machine down after updates were installed. now I can't boot into Fedora 12. I booted using the live cd and all my files seem to be in order except there is nothing in the boot folder. Is there anyway to reinstall boot/grub from the live cd? I do have a backup copy of a previous menu.lst.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook that dual-boots Win XP and Ubuntu 10.04 and accidentally hit the Win recovery mode in GRUB today, but quickly restarted without formatting or proceeding with any recovery. But upon reboot I just see: error: no such partition. grub rescue>
What I have tried so far: Boot to USB Live Disk... It won't, just goes straight to grub rescue.I do ls and it gives me (hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,3) (hd0,2) (hd0,1) (fd0) error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values.
set gives me
prefix=(hd0,5)/boot/grub
root=hd0,5
but if I try to boot it says unknown command so I figured I needed to find the right partition to boot from but I went through all of them with ls (hd0,4)/boot, ls (hd0,3)/boot etc. and every partition comes back "unknown filesystem".
got four partitions, one for media storage, one with ubuntu 9.10 32bit, one with crunchbang lite 9.04 64bit and one swap partition. The partition with ubuntu has been formated from ext4 to fat32 (with nothing on it, obviously). Whenever I boot up the pc now, I get an "unknown filesystem" error and a grub rescue> prompt. When I try to boot up a live usb image from my usb stick I either get a "linux kernel not found" message (crunchbang lite 32bit) or "initial menu has no LABEL entries!" error (gparted live usb) which changes to "Could not find kernel image: vesamenu.c32" after a couple of seconds. save my media partition or, more importantly, my crunchbang lite partition (which has one single important file on it, I'd love to recover). If this is somehow not possible, then I'd at least like to get my system usable again by succesfully booting from usb. I'm fairly new to using linux. I tried some grub-rescue commands, but not even the "help" command worked,

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had 250gb hard disk with dual boot, xp and ubuntu 10.10.Yesterday, i tried to upgarde my ubuntu 10 to 11 from a live cd....b4 doing so, i used a win software EasyBCD to fix the mbr but it didn't work properly..and i ignored it(my biggest mistake)and deleted the ubuntu partion from the windows device manager. It just displays "Booting from Live CD" for few minutes and again displyas the same above error.What should i do now?Its ok if i m not able to recover my data back...i hv sycnd my docs on the internet.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running 9.10 off of a 4 GiB CF card. I keep running into space issues with updates, so I purchased an 8 GiB replacement card. I've cloned the 4 GiB card to a .IMG file using DD.I've then copied the 4 GiB image back to the 8 GiB card using the Ubuntu startup disk creator program. Once done, I'm able to properly boot off of the new 8 GiB clone.Unfortunately, the clone ends up with 3.67 GiB of unallocated space at the end *see attached). I tried deleting the "extended" partition that the swap is located at after booting from a Live CD and the system was unable to boot after this. I was thinking that I would delete the swap entirely and create a swap file after I merged the existing partitions, but I was unable to do this.
best way to do this (e.g. get one large 8 GiB partition with my old image on it)? I still have the original untouched 4 GiB card and also have an external CF drive if I need to redo the cloning. I've also used Clonezilla before, so perhaps there's a way to do this that allow me to grow the image as it's being cloned.
Naturally, hiding the graphical grub screen on a regular installation is easy, by adding either "timeout 0" or "hiddenmenu" to menu.lst. But on a live boot, there seems to be no menu.lst - at least no accessible one.
Although, in some kiwi image types, you can specify boottimeout="n" in the image description's type element, it does not have the intended effect. Here is an example. The following type element's boottimeout attribute will invoke the first grub menu item instantly. Changing the value to zero, not only does not hide the grub screen, but seems to restore the default 10 second time out.

Is there any way to hide the graphical grub screen in a kiwi live boot?
I currently have XP installed on a NetBook (Samsung NC10), and would like to run Fedora on it. I'm currently looking at putting Fedora onto a flash memory card to test it works OK on the hardware, before installing it to the hard disk. The problem I've got is that the boot sector is occupied by WDE software (TrueCrypt). Will this pose a problem for dual-booting XP with Fedora, or will GRUB move the boot loader in the usual way?

I have installed windows 7 back to its former state in after foolishly messing around with some installation options in an Ubuntu install (this caused windows to disappear, and me to repair it). In *repairing* windows, I overwrote my grub file and the boot options for Ubuntu, so that it looks something like this:
Disk 1: Primary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Free Space ( this is where I have Ubuntu installed)
How can I repair my grub file so that I can boot into my Ubuntu installation?
I'm going to be installing Windoze (because 3D graphics are still not there in Linux), but that will of course override the MBR. So how do I rewrite it? I just tried starting from the Fedora 11 DVD until it got into the 1st graphical screen, and then I tried to mount *any* of my Fedora partitions - I think it's made 5 of them (God knows why!!), but anyway,none of them would mount except /boot - kept saying "wrong fs type or superblock" etc. My plan was of course, to chroot my current Fedora partition, and then run grub-install, but of course I can't if the partition itself doesn't mount.
