I edited /etc/fstab and after that the computer won't boot up. I got as far as (Repair filesystem) 32 #mount -w -o -remount / and it says already mounted or busy. I type (Repair filesystem) 32 #mount And it looks like all mount points are (rw) I try to edit /etc/fstab but when I save it I get told that the filesystem is READ ONLY.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a following problem: Recently my drive with Ubuntu 9.4 has mysteriously stopped working, i.e. when I switch the computer on it informs me that GRUB didn't find the filesystem. Well, I suppose it happens.
First, I though it was due to the drive dying, but I popped it in an external enclosure and HDTune told me the drive was fine. Wanting to recover the files on the drive before reinstalling I first tried to mount it in said external enclosure under Windows (I have Win Ext2 driver installed which used to work just fine). This time, however, drive gets assigned a letter but upon opening it Windows popped up an error saying that the drive was not formatted and whether I would like to format it then.
Unfazed by this streak of failures I tried to mount it under Linux but, alas, to no avail. I might have tried every single -t operator under mount command but it still won't budge and let me mount.
I am using Fedora core 10. I have changed my partition size of Linux from windows. After I finished resizing the partition, I rebooted my system to the Linux platform. While booting it gave me an

View 1 Replies View RelatedPlaying with the Box, I deleted a Raid-0 partition intentionally, saved it, and reboot drops me to (Repair Filesystem#) prompt. I notice during boot-up that the box didn't find /dev/md0, which is expected.
So what's the recovery procedure, since I can't edit #/etc/fstab, permission denied.
#fdisk -l
shows all other partitions.
Not much familiar with fsck/e2fsck, yet like to give it a try.
I have XP, Win7 Pro and F 11 installed. Before I installed F 11, Win 7 boot mgr was working fine. I then installed F 11 and I went to System/Admin/bootloader to edit it and it wouldn't bring up the boot loader. In the attachment was the error msg. Now my only option when I boot up is F 11.
I do not have access to the Win 7 DVD only the F 11 install disk since I am on a fishing trip and need to use Win 7. How can I repair to the grub boot loader to boot into Win 7?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been running a server for 3-4 years now, and my shares have been mounting just fine. Well, the network admin looked at a backup and seen that the last date backed up was june. I got to looking around and seen that the share is not mounting. I can mount it with sudo mount -a, which tells me my syntax is correct. I get an error about IPv4 socket not opened and it is aborting the operation when I run dmesg | tail, since I can use the above command to mount later, it sounds to me like it is trying to mount before the network connection is ready.
I have done some looking over some init scripts and found that in the /etc/rc.d/init.r/netfs script it has a line that states that it is checking to see if the network is up before it starts to mount the filesystems and the such. This is set to no, my question is, can I change this option to yes and get my desired results, waiting for the network to be up before it mounts the filesystems.
Original disk:
XP NTFS primary
Linux / ext4 logical
Linux /home ext4 logical
Win 7 NTFS logical
NTFS data logical
swap space
NTFS recovery partition
I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).
I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.
Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?
I really need some help here, this is driving me mad. I edited my fstab file to boot a partition on start up, only instead of typing sda7 I typed sda1 by mistake and now can't boot.
The problem that is driving me mad is I cannot save changes to fstab from a live cd because I do not have root permissions.
I am relatively new to Linux and have no idea how to use the fedora install disk or the commands to use or if it will let me save changes to the file.
I cannot believe something so easy to fix does not appear to be possible because i can't save changes to the fstab on my fedora install.
I've edited /etc/fstab to auto-mount two partitions on a new disk drive that have been formatted as ext3, by appending the following two lines:
/dev/sdb1 /bak1 ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/sdb2 /bak2 ext3 defaults 1 1
On reboot, the system complains there is some problem (I can't advise what the problem is, because the display scrolls up too fast to read!), and I'm left with a root command prompt.
Its a /etc/fstab problem, presumably. I've used vi to edit /etc/fstab to remove the two lines mentioned above, but on quit and save, I'm told I have a read-only file system!

I got my laptop repaired (by the manufacturer). Linux would install fine before, but not now, as all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. Note, I've only tried KDE versions of software since my laptop came back, so I don't know if that's the problem. I tried linux mint 9 and kubuntu 10.04. And all I get after a while is described above. I also tried some different install options, because I'm able to get to the menu to choose which type of install I want, but the other options led to the same thing, and it would sometimes display a bunch of numbers and then "EH ok" or something. the numbers on the left keep increasing, and eventually I get to the splash screen, where it freezes, and repeats the process.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to work out how to set up Fedora 15 to automatically mount an NFS share at boot time. I can mount the share interactively using 'mount -t nfs server:/usr/local /usr/local'. When I put the entry in /etc/fstab, it stops the machine booting. It tries to give me a shell ('Enter root password for shell or press Control-D to exit') or something close to that. However, I cannot enter the maintenance mode, it hangs. Same thing with pressing control-D, it hangs and doesn't get any further.
I rescued the system by booting off a CD, mounting root, and removing the nfs entry from fstab. After that it booted fine. The entry I had in the fstab is: nfsserver:usr/local /usr/localnfsro,hard,bg,intr,comment=systemd.automount0 0
I put the 'comment=systemd.automount' entry in because of some related searches I did in forums.
I spill my soda on my keyboard and ended up in a 4 day war with my pc.Now my tab, capslock, left shift, and down vol no longer works. I'm going to take it into the shop in the next couple of days to probably replace the keyboard. (If only lenovo kept the easy access keyboards like ibm had on the thinkpads). Something tells me that they will want to log in and test out the keyboard. So I created a guest account with a simple password. I changed my normal user home dir to 770 permissions and changed guest's shell to /bin/rbash. (both found in other posts.) Is there anything else I should do to secure the computer while it is in the shop?[I use su, sudo isn't configured to work (its a dependency so I can't uninstall)]. I have a pretty decent root password.

I can enter run level 1, but when after that if I "init 2" it is halted. Most of the boot message (after i create empty fstab with touch) is complaining about read only filesystem.
ps note:
1. I use LVM
2. I don't have access to a live cd until saturday
3. /etc/mtab is empty as well when i checked it in run level 1
I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
my Fedora 12 does fsck on boot time to time and sometimes it's really annoying having to wait for the check to complete. In Linux Mint pressing <Esc> cancelled the check; however in Fedora this does not work (nor does Ctrl+C nor anything other I've tried). What is the key to cancel the check in Fedora?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI downloaded ubuntu 10.10 iso, made CD, installed as dual-boot with win Vista home premium and used it for a week to access the 'net and email. Yesterday, while deleting an email, the "d" key stuck down while I was issuing <CTRL>D and the cursor froze. I then rebooted by using the reset button and saw many lines of text including "kernel panic". so I reset and booted into 'repair boot'. Again, many lines of text which stop at the same place if I try this twice.
I assume I've fried my ubuntu install and would like to fix or re-install it. When I installed it, I let the [wubi?] installer make decisions except choice of drive because it picked the external, USB drive. It appears to've used about 80 G on internal drive D: I could boot from the distro CD and see if it will re-install but I'm concerned that I may not fix my problem or that it may mess up my windows installation.
My Fedora 12 System was failed when booting.The message like that : mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/my_vol missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In some case, useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Can't mount at root filesystem. [drm: drm_mode_rmfb ] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own. Boot has failed, sleep forever. I guess something wrong with my hard disk, so the bootloader can't recognize the filesystem type.

Installed from Ubuntu server 10.04LTS x86_64, + xfce-desktop Here is uname -a Linux ournas 2.6.32-25-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:06:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux If I add my raid + lvm to the fstab file, the boot stalls, (no error it, just hangs waiting, forever). So that's a not very user friendly to start with.
I've tried the suggestions about UUID in fstab tried using LABEL instead, or even /dev/xxx. Every time it hangs. I've googled this endlessly and not found a solution. So don't ask why... since I seem to have tried every odd suggestion to fix this, I've lost track. There seems to be some consensus that whoever gave us plymouth laid an egg. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but did we need a better graphical boot if it breaks everything else?

I've downloaded Fedora 12 and decided to try and install it on my old laptop which is currently running Ubuntu 9.10 with no problems.
When I boot from the live cd, it starts to load with the 3 bars on the bottom, one on top of the other, one is white, one is dark blue, the other is in between those colours in the spectrum somewhere....
Anyway, the load bars complete and "Fedora 12" turns white, then the following output populates:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'DM_Snapshot_Cow' (<----- repeated a bunch of times) can't mount root filesystem Boot has failed, sleeping forever.
i am trying to compile kernel 2.6.23 on Fedora 12 After fixing a few bugs (getline error, %dil ,etc) i was able to compile the kernel made initramfs img using dracut updated grub and then booted up the new kernel 2.6.23 but it fails to boot with following error mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'
