Ubuntu :: Can't Boot My System It Does Not Allow Me To Change Anything In Fstab File

I have ntfs partition installed bran new ubuntu system. I have some problem with unrar utf8 character zip files.Then i change my fstab file that uses files in D:ubuntudisks oot.disk and i added with out no fearless Code: ,utf8 and after all now i can't boot my linux system it does not allow me to change anything in fstab file. Although i use as a prefix sudo or as a root "sudo -i" commands I dont have any right to change it.

is it safe to change fstab UUID entry for the system to /dev/sdb4? and after editing fstab, is there a script or command I need to run to release lock or update mount information? edit: I see not correct, and therefore not safe,but is there a format to tell linux to use /dev/sda1 instead of UUID= or label= .

I'm dual booting with Windows 7 and would like to have my windows 7 user folder mount when I boot.
After some looking around I edited /etc/fstab to add the following line:
This works. But it mounts the windows partition from the root level. I'd like to just mount C:UsersFHSM (/Users/FSHM) to /mnt/windows.
I'm trying to get it so that when I click on the windows drive I get my windows user folder instead of having to click through from C: to get to it.
I'm the only user on this system but if I created a second windows user would my home folder mount for that person too or does setting the user ID prevent that from happening?

I just recently installed ubuntu 9.10 in my upstairs computer. It is a single boot system.Downstairs I have a dual boot system. I have windows vista and ubuntu 9.10 installed. It worked fine. I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

/dev/sda3 /windows ntfs-3g defaults,nosuid,nodev,umask=000 1 0
Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.

So 2 days ago everything was all fine on my machine. Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. I should have used a newer FS but thats a whole other argument.
Anyways here we go.
The system is Debian Lenny amd64
Physical RAM 4GB + 6GB swap

Forgive the terseness. I'm frazzled with this issue, perhaps I should have asked earlier. Every weekend for the past 2 months has been an endless cycle of 'repair broken system' off the install disk.
Installed from Ubuntu server 10.04LTS x86_64, + xfce-desktop Here is uname -a Linux ournas 2.6.32-25-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:06:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux If I add my raid + lvm to the fstab file, the boot stalls, (no error it, just hangs waiting, forever). So that's a not very user friendly to start with.
I've tried the suggestions about UUID in fstab tried using LABEL instead, or even /dev/xxx. Every time it hangs. I've googled this endlessly and not found a solution. So don't ask why... since I seem to have tried every odd suggestion to fix this, I've lost track. There seems to be some consensus that whoever gave us plymouth laid an egg. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but did we need a better graphical boot if it breaks everything else?

I use Markdown to store all of my source documents. Unfortunately, the .md extension maps to application/x-genesis-rom under Ubuntu. I'm not sure why that would be a system default MIME type, but I'd like to change it.
I've tried using:

to modify my file type cache. Unfortunately, even as the SU, I can't modify the entry for this file type. The "Remove" button is inactivated for the entry. (See attachment.)
How can I get rid of this (obsolete?) file association? Alternatively, how can I make my new one (text/x-markdown) take precedence?

I'm new to Linux, and i was playing around with wubi for some time, and now i made a fresh instal of 11.04 64bits, no problems so far! But one thing was change, the boot system. My computer is used by me and my daughter (7years old), and when i was using the wubi instalation when booting she only see Wyndows 7 and Ubunbtu, . Now with this fresh instalation, i think is grub o takes control, she have a hard time to try to enter in W7, because of all "offers" from their.
So my question is, can i change the boot system to w7 control (like with wubi)?

I have been using a dual boot Windows/Ubuntu system since 8.04 and successfully upgraded to 8.10 and 9.04 (Windows is XP sp3).I now need to encrypt my hard drive but only the windows partition. The software I will be using can cope with this as long as I have the original Windows MBR in place and then add an extra option in the windows boot loader to boot to linux.My windows partition is ntfs and I have followed the following instructions given in the encryption software guide.
sudo dd if=/dev/sda3 of=/media/linux.tr0 bs=512 count=1 [Enter]
sudo mkdir /media/disk-c [Enter]
sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/sda2 /media/disk-c [Enter]
I then had to boot into Windows and go to the System Control Panel, click the advance tab and in the Startup and Recovery section, click the Settings button. I then clicked the EDIT button to edit the Boot.ini file. My file had the following

I then rebooted. GRUB still took over as bootloader and I selected Windows As Windows began to boot I got the Windows Boot Manager and there I selected Linux. This took me to GRUB and an error 18 eventually the machine rebooted and I got GRUB as the initial bootloader. I want to be sure that if I now use fixmbr in Windows I will still be able to boot into Linux without getting the Error 18. Should I go ahead and use fixmbr or is there something else I need to do. Once the bootloader is windows then I can use the encryption software and encrypt the windows partition only.

I installed ubuntu using a disk image, and now, when I boot, it just goes directly to ubuntu, which is corrupted. I'm running ubuntu from the disk right now, and I want to change my boot.ini file so that it just points to windows xp. How can I do this from within ubuntu? I've tried using the windows setup disk, but none of my admin passwords work.

Everything is software raid using mdadm
3x320GB HDDs in raid 5
1x1.5TB HDDs in raid 1(don't ask)
The above are LVMed to create ~2TB of combined space using reiserFS. I'm not really happy with the performance so I'm moving to XFS while I'm at it.
I FINALLY got around to ordering 2 more 1.5TB HDDs. The end goal is.3x1.5TB HDD in raid 5 formatted to XFS for a total of around ~2.7GB of space.
1. Create raid 5 array using the new 2x1.5TB HDDs.(yes, very pointless at the moment, please continue reading)
2. Copy data from 2TB LVM to the new ~2.7TB raid 5. (will mdadm let me be an idiot? It apparently let me force create a single drive in a raid 1)
3. Move the original 1.5TB over to the new raid 5 to actually provide redundancy.

Now I have the Android libraries-I extracted these from the Android 2.6.27- but how do I merge these with MY root file system

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.

all of a sudden my pc decided no to start anymore.YOu might be aware of the ide/sata driver problem, well it was the problem. I reinstalled grub with suse dvd and it went ok. Pc working properly. But then i tried to fix this once for all and changed the fstab options from /dev-by-id to uuid (all partitions : swap, /, /home etc ).Is uuid a definite solution ?Why is the pc not able to start from there ?
Since i moved the partitions with uuid option in fstab and even after reinstalling grub the pc is not starting anymore . It gives me the boot menu (linux suse/failsafe) and then a black screen left with no keyboard nor mouse available.

At work I'm using a windows box with local and network drives. One of drives I have mapped is my Linux home directory (We have separate windows and linux accounts and home directories here). When I view it from windows, all of the files and folders beginning with . are shown, as would be expected. (Although . and .. aren't in any folder)
Just wondering if there is a way to tell windows to not show anything starting with a dot. I was hoping there's a registry entry or something that defines what a 'protected operating system file' is, so I could put dot files in the same category as thumbs.db etc.

i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

i needed to change my external hard drive's file system from ext3 to fat32, to use it in windows, which i did the simple way: i shrunk the ext3 partition, made a fat32 partition, copied the files over, removed the ext3 and made the fat32 bigger. unfortunately, while gparted was making the partition larger, my computer shut down. i lost all my files and the partition messed up immediately. i made a new fat32 partition, after deleting the old one, but noticed that gparted was showing 100 gigs already in use (???). so now i have a 300 gb hard drive with only 200 gb i can use; i ran df to make sure gparted wasn't messing up, but indeed it shows the partition as being only 200 gigs in size. i haven't tried making any other kind of partition yet, such as ext3, for fear of losing my files again, and because it wouldn't be permanent anyway, because i need those files in windows and stupid microsoft won't make their OS ext3 compatible.

I have an external hdd that I have added to the fstab so it will mount when I boot. But every time I add the line to fstab and reboot, it hangs during the boot process and says something about ureadahead-other status 4. here is my line in fstab..
/dev/sdc1 /NAS ext3 defaults 0 0
Is there anything wrong with that? I couldn't remember what fs I chose when I formatted it so I did "sudo parted /dev/sdc print" and it said it was ext3.
