I installed a new disk and need to share it on NFS, but the share keep failing. I think the reason is the disk was not mounted when NFS started. How do I guarantee local disk mounted before NFS?

I booted my laptop from the FC 13 Live CD.I'd like to mount the local disk while booted from the Live CD.In older versions of Linux, this used to be as simple as "mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/whatever".But, no longer Progress. When I do "fdisk -l /dev/sda", while booted from the FC13 Live CD, the /dev/sda2 partition shows up as "Linux LVM". My question: how can I mount the partition containing home directories from the "Linux LVM" partition?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two machines on my local netowrk, one running Fedora 9 and the other Fedora 11,(64 bit version).I made one, machine A, into an NSF server and arranged to export a directory to the other machine B.I made sure the firewalls were allowing nsf traffic, and I restarted all the relevant daemons.But the mounting still doesn't work.I looked at the setup on my Linksys router, but I don't see anything obvious there that might be getting in the way.ping and ssh recognize my names for the two machines and work properly, bu t I've also tried using the numeric local ip addresses.I tried with the program showmount on B to see if there was any connectivity and I getB% showmount -e Aand I get the responseclint_create:RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: unable to receive.I used to manage a departmental network and set up nfs mounts all the time, but things were simpler then. View 14 Replies View RelatedI am mounting a Window's network shared folder every time Fedora boots. It is mounted into the /mnt directory. Recently I noticed I am almost out of disk space, and I found out that my mount folder is what is eating all the space. I was under the assumption that the mounted folder wasn't on my Fedora machine at all, and resided on the Windows machine. Apparently my assumption was incorrect, or possibly I mounted something in an unusual way.

I have two external USB drives, that I need to mount at boot. I have been using /etc/fstab up until now, with the following entries:

However, as I gather from doing searches is quite common, occasionally I get an error during boot (causing the system to drop to a recovery shell) because the USB drives take time to wake up and the system hasn't found them by the time it reads /etc/fstab.
From doing searches, it seems there is nothing you can do to fstab to fix this, so you need to mount them using an rc.local script instead, using:

The problem is, as I have two USB drives, their /dev/sdxx location changes between boots. I thus want to use UUID codes as I do in fstab, however I haven't found anything about this.
Does anyone know how I can use the mount command and UUID to mount a drive in rc.local and what options I have to use the mount the drive with the same options that I am using in my fstab entry? Obvisouly, I can't refer back to fstab using the mount command, because then I will still get the boot error issue if they are listed in fstab. And there is no space internally for the USB drives as there is already two internal drives.
I just updated Fedora 14 with the updates it downloaded and I am now stuck with the error.

Then I install fresh copy of fedora 12, by shrinking with current system. the new copy of fedora is installed on new partition of disk. there is some important data on my previously installed fedora 12. that disk is shown by "160 GB Hard Disk: 36 GB LVM2 Physical Volume" I am unable to mount this partition.
This probably is something simple, and may have already been addressed on here.I have a 1.4MB floppy disk image file that I would like to mount as a drive.

A. I have partitioned my WinXP LTop into:
--- WinXP NTFS partition
--- a vfat partition (mounted onto /fat32)
--- Installed F10 on ext3 virtual partition
B. I do not want install grub-loader in the Master Boot Record (that would loose my WinXP boot-loader for ever)
C. I have installed grub boot loader in the First Boot Sector
D. Now I have to boot using Rescue Mode, do:
1. dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/fat32/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
2. mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs
3. cp /fat32/linux.bin /ntfs
4. modify /ntfs/c/boot.ini and introduce the statement 'c:linux.bin="Linux"'
Problem: Im not able to do step D.2 above.
Symptom:

* The rescue mode boots into i586 based kernel (I dont know what is the actual difference between i586 and i686 - will really appreciate if anyone can educate me about it). * The installation is only a i686 image and consequently there is *only* '/lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686' dir and *no* other dir. There is no dir as xxxx.fc10.i586.
I have an external drive that I want to do backups to. Most times it goes great, other times the server gets real sloggy, and I do a 'df' and see I'm at 96% disk usage. What has occured is the disk failed to mount apparently, so the backup backs up to my local disk at /media/backups/
I have /media/backups in my /etc/fstab pointing to /dev/sdc1, but I think the external disk will sleep when not in use for long periods.
How do I make sure /media/backups is REALLY going to the external drive and not my local drive? Is there anyway to sort of test it BEFORE I write umpteen gigs to my local hard drive?
I am using Fedora and I can see the public folders from other computers on my network as 'public on xxx'. Is there any way to mount that to the local fs? The way it is now I can only access it in the file manager.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) on a Dell Precision 670 desktop that I share with another user. The OS is installed on a 160GB disk, which also has the /home folders. There is also a second internal disk (1TB) which has shared files (music, pictures, etc).
How can I configure Ubuntu such that either person can read or write to this shared disk? Right now, if someone is logged into the PC, the disk can be mounted, but then it is not available to the other person.
is there any way to find out whether a disk is attached to the server locally or from the SAN Box .

I found several tutorials that recommend curlftpfs, but this project seems no longer maintained (last update on sourceforge goes back to Apr 2007).
So, is curlftpfs still the best choice or is there something newer which I could rely on?

I have about 50 servers with at least 200 GB free on each host. I need close to 10 TB of continuous shared storage between almost half of the servers for a new app I building.
I was looking into buying a storage device but was wonder if I could get any use out of the free space on all the servers, grouping all of the free storage from the hosts into one reduduant storage array.
I'm running XBMC media center which is built on Ubuntu and I'm trying to mount a network share, but I can't seem to automate it. If I manually run:

The mount is created and everything works fine. But obviously the mount eill be lost on the next boot. A few months back, when I was running a previous version of XBMC and first instructed on how to do this, I was told to put that command in /etc/init.d/rc.local so the mount would automatically be created at boot. I did and it worked. The other day I upgraded to a new XBMC build (which is built on the newer Lucid Ubuntu) and while the same command creates the mount, putting it in /etc/init.d/rc.local does not create it on boot. Someone suggested the fstab was the better place to create the mount. So I inserted the following in /etc/fstab:

That doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong and how can I get this mount auto-created on boot?
I have this unique situation, I think. My TV plays certain files only through external USB storage. My Ubuntu server stores all of these files on local hard disks. I do not want to buy an external hard disk and then keep moving it between both. Now, strange as it may sound, is it possible to somehow connect my server to the PC and expose a given local hard disk connected to the server, as an external USB drive to the TV?

What I was wondering in this day of laptops, if there was a script that could find and mount Window shares that were hooked into your local network, but only on a temporary bases. Something like what you would do mount a usb connection, such as a camera that you had the drivers for. I do know that networks are more complex, was just interested if something like that was developed yet. Just to let you know that my scripting skills are zero, and my ability to do so less.

It seems CacheFS exists to cache reads, but not writes to nfs.
I would imagine that if I could cache writes to my nfs on a local drive I could have a fast system, but keep all my files where I want them on my network.
I'm thinking about this because I am planning on buying a SSD, and I would imagine if I could set things up this way the system could be lightening fast while keeping things on the network. Currently if I copy a large file (hundreds of MB) it is quite slow, with an SSD and caching, I would imagine the copy could be very fast.
I have a script which runs a few other scripts (in subfolders of the first script) in order to mount some unix/linux shares) Anyway, when I run the file from rc.local and try to pipe the output into a file the file is empty and the shares are not mounted. however when I run the file it mounts everything.... Also, the script doesn't work on my wireless clients...

connection works fine, and to start with I can see my local disk "\tsclientmyhome" and navigate around + open files. If I try to delete a file or rename a folder, I get an Error 0x8007048F:The device is not connected.
After this, I can no longer access the local disk. It says: "\tsclientmyhome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Attempt to access invalid address." As I understand it, I should be contacting myself about permissions... Can anyone tell me what I need to do on my local ubuntu machine to fix this?
I am thinking about setting up a local Debian Repository mirror. I want it to mirror just the Debian Repo at [URL].. Anyone have any idea how much disk space I might need to do it?
