Jun 20, 2011
The latest installed kernel stopped working. ( 2.6.35.13-92.fc14.i686) It won't boot. I just get black screen with blinking cursor in top left corner. How do I, or can I, remove and reinstall?

It's been along time since I had to put my tail between my legs anf come to the forum to ask a question. However, I have a problem that has me stumped and can't seem to find an answer for.
I've been using WinFF as a frontend for FFmpeg since I was on Intrepid. Every time the same thing after a fresh install. Add Medibuntu then install the extra codecs ffmpeg and winff and everything worked.
The other day I decided to do some spring cleaning on my machine and start over with a new installation of Lucid. I had the installer format the root partition while leaving /home alone. Afterward I went about reinstalling winff/ffmpeg just like I,ve done in the past. But now when I try to convert an AVI video into MP4 to play on my BlackBerry I get an error that states "unknown encoder libfaac"
I've checked in synaptic. It's installed. I tried another reinstall. No luck. Googled but couldn't find an answer that would work.
Everything was perfect before the reinstall. Now I get this error. I didn't upgrade or anything just a straight reinstall of Lucid.

We are running CentOS 5.4 x86 on ESX 4 Server. We have a busy Help Desk, a Forum and several name-based websites running. Weve been using CentOS for this 'purpose for several years (different versions) and so far we have never had a problem. On Saturday, I applied all the latest updates including the Kernel updates. I rebooted the server and all seemed well until Sunday morning when I didn't get my Logwatch in the mail. Then I got a telephone call from a customer asking me why I hadn't responded to a Trouble Ticket he had created on Saturday afternoon (creating a TT sends an email via sendmail to all the support staff). I did a few tests and sendmail has just stopped working. The Logwatch had been created and had been sent to root, but all mail for root is redirected to my Mail Server on e different box (GroupWise). There was nothing wrong with the mail server, but sendmail has just stopped.
Fortunately I had created a snapshot before I applied the updates, so I reverted back to the snapshot and mail started working again, but I lost 2 days info because I had run the backup before I applied the patches. Now I see there are 132 Updates available, but there is obviously a problem somewhere in there!

My graphics card (00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03))
used to work fine, but yesterday I opened glest and it crashed my computer within 5 seconds. No picture was ever displayed. I downloaded another 3D game called Nogravity (Glest being my only one, I wanted something else to test) and it crashed after a few minutes of play and I had to restart. After all the crashes kerneloops came up with a report.
Here is the most recent one:
Code:
I did recently notice that I have no direct 3D rendering, it comes up with something like: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT SET)
I do not know whether I used to have it, but I do know that 3D apps used to run perfectly well. (In fact the stability of 3D apps was what converted me from Ubuntu where they crashed every 5 minutes)
I ran glxgears for 5 seconds and it gave me 420 FPS.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad s10 which worked flawlessly with wired, I could never get it to so much as search for a wireless network, so I gave up on it long ago.
I'm using UNR 9.10 on it and today, after updating Wicd Network Manager stopped working making it impossible for me to go online with the netbook even when using a wired connection.
I restarted the computer after the update and once UNR booted up wicd wanted root access to use my computer's network cards, I entered my password, this never happened before but whatever, unfortunately after I entered my password wicd didn't show up in the tray and sure enough there was no internet connection whatsoever.
I tried running wicd manually, UNR says opening, but nothing comes up, no tray icon no nothing.

Yesterday I disinstalled with yast java-1_6_0-openjdk-1.6.0.0_b20.1.9.2-0.2.1-x86_64 and java-1_6_0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0_b20.1.9.2-0.2.1-x86_64 (which were installed as part of our sitewide suse 11.3 installation) and replaced them with java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 and java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 (et al) to solve my problem about bad graphics quality in firefox applets as described and suggested in this other postl. That successfully solved my applet problem, but I just discovered it triggered a new problem with openoffice . I tried opening an existing sxc document and got this error message:[Java framework]sunjavaplugin.so could not load Java runtime library: file:///usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so.
It looks like that openoffice is still looking into the old openjdk instead of the new sun java. How can I repoint it to use the current java (assuming it really needs it) ? Apparently even entering openoffice on a new document gives error in a popupOpenOffice org requires a JRE to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version or install a new JRE and select it under Tools-Options-OpenOffice org-Java ... but since openoffice does not start I cannot access those options I guess (or is such stuff located elsewhere, and if so where) ?

For quite a long time now, I haven't even needed to re-install video drivers most of the time. However, ever since version 2.6.36-0.dmz.4, they haven't been. I booted my system after installing that kernel, re-installed the video drivers, and when that didn't work, completely removed them and re-installed them, and it still didn't work. Well, I was told that the installation was successful but even after restarting it appeared that they weren't working. I installed 2.6.36-0.dmz.5 today and the same problem persists. I tried an older kernel version (2.6.36-4 something) and they worked fine.

I have been using Opensuse since 11.0, and I never had any problems with the setup of CUPS printing (university based). Now for the first time, after many months of flawless printing using 11.2, after installing 11.3 the printing has stopped working. I use the same method: Print via print server machine -> CUPS server (IPP) and I test the connection. In my 11.2 it shows "OK", in 11.3 (I also tried with firewall off) I am getting the following (I have substituted the actual values with xxx for privacy).

from [URL] How to remove them completely? The ipw2200 driver complains that it could not agree with certain symbols in ieee80211 module. Before taking another route, I would like to know how to completely remove the files installed by these driver packages.

Running F11 x86_64 on recently rebuilt desktop with new processor/motherboard
I tried to build mplayer from source, and something got messed up. When I realized I had done something wrong, I did a "make remove", and then tried to reinstall mplayer from rpmfusion using yum.
(There is a bug in mencoder that was fixed in the latest source tree - a documented bug that has to do with subtitles. I don't think I can patch a library with a diff line of code, so thought the best answer to get the update would be to install mplayer by source. I love using Fedora, and would like to make that next step in learning linux by building a few custom packages. Apparently, I don't have all the skills yet!)
That being said, my system is still not quite right. I figure the easy answer is to wait until tomorrow, upgrade to F12, and all should be well. But... I will probably compile something else and mess something else up - that's just how I roll...
I can get a list (sort of) of install packages with "yum list installed". Is there a way to strip off all of the extra information, then pipe this to yum reinstall? I may resort to doing this by hand, but there has to be an easier way!

When I run yum list installed command the output shows two kernels:

Would it therefore be safe to remove the first kernel in the installed list to save having two kernels being updated everytime I run yum update? Or is the PAE kernel dependant upon the original?

I've noticed a bad behaviour with the latest 2 Fedora kernel releases:
- it happens with 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64
- but 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 is OK
The problem is as follows: Any kind of terminal application (any X based terminal and the console itself) hangs on certain operations involving colors from what I've seen
E.g. 'ls -F --color' as predefined in Fedora works but 'ls -F --color -a' hangs. Midnight Commander also hangs but works on black and white.
My terminal is xterm-256color under X and linux under console.
Other observations:
- it happens on a AMD machine but not on an Intel i.e. not all hardware is affected (couldn't narrow it more)
- same machine, same software stack but with kernel 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 works OK

Now, every time my system starts, it loads up the startup fedora bar, and it gets stuck at the bar being loaded 100%.I press ESC to see what is going on behind the scenes, and I notice that the problem is that atd cannot start up.

I am relatively new to the Linux System (8 months). I am having issues after upgrading the Scientific Linux 6 kernel from its current 2.6.x version to the latest version that SL6 has available. The issue is that once I install the upgrade and reboot, the internet becomes extremely laggy when scrolling on web pages, so much so that you get a ripple like effect as your scrolling. Which doesn't occur in the current kernel i am using.
Current Kernel is: 2.6.32-71.18.2.el6
New Kernel RPM update is: 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6
I wish I could figure out the problem but I am having trouble identifying what exactly the current kernel has that the new one doesn't that would cause the internet lag. I have read other topics with similar kernel update problems, but none have expressed an internet problem & only an internet problem from a kernel update.

I am running the 64-bit version of Fedora 12 on an MacBookPro5,1 Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 Gigabytes or RAM.
I updated my system to use kernel 2.6.32.16-141.fc12.x86_64. Now when I try to boot the machine to that kernel, I'm left with a blank screen except for a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left corner after going through the load progress bar animation that appears at the bottom of the scene when Fedora is booting up.
I have my system configured to use the nVidia drivers for OpenGL 3D acceleration
I have to boot to previous kernel to have a usable system.
What can I do so that the system will boot up properly with the latest kernel?

I try to update my kernel to 2.6.18.128.4.1.el5 using
# yum update
After # yum update # rpm -qa kernel*|sort gives the following:
kernel-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5
kernel-2.6.18-128.1.16.el5.centos.plus
kernel-2.6.18-128.4.1.el5.centos.plus
kernel-2.6.18-92.1.18.el5
kernel-2.6.18-92.el5
kernel-devel-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5 .....
This my grub.conf:
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#boot=/dev/hda
default=1
timeout=5.....
yum update installed:
CentOS (2.6.18-128.4.1.el5.centos.plusxen) and
CentOS (2.6.18-128.4.1.el5.centos.plus)
both are not working. I have to run the system using: 2.6.18-128.1.14.el5. Upon trying again #yum update it says that no packages are marked for update. Can I manually install the desired kernel? Do you know a reason why yum update is not automatically installing the proper kernel?

Dual Boot: Fedora 12 and XP Dell 505I've had trouble with the latest kernel update.I updated a bunch of packages recently (including Xorg and kernel), and noticed a severe flickering after the update on my center monitor (Samsung T260 - the laptop display did not exhibit the flickering behavior). I backed out all the changes and started updating package by package. After I updated the kernel (again) I rebooted and here's where the fun part is -
I no longer get anything, except the cursor. No grub menu, no grub prompt. I rebooted and ran the rescue disk and followed the procedurery and point grub at the right boot partition - see here. However (obviously or I wouldn't be posting) that failed to work. I still get a blinking cursor and dead system on boot up.

Last night I installed F12 x86_64 from a liveUSB in my laptop with Atheros wireless. During the install process and after the first boot I was able to surf the web connected to the wireless network (signal was good and all). After I updated the whole system, however, the wireless network is no longer available (Network Manager does not even show the Wireless interface or the network list).
Obviously a laptop without wireless is mostly worthless. What am I supposed to do to get my (perfectly working*) wireless network back?
