Fedora :: Latest Kernel And Terminal Hangs?

Feb 26, 2010

I've noticed a bad behaviour with the latest 2 Fedora kernel releases:

- it happens with 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64

- but 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 is OK

The problem is as follows: Any kind of terminal application (any X based terminal and the console itself) hangs on certain operations involving colors from what I've seen

E.g. 'ls -F --color' as predefined in Fedora works but 'ls -F --color -a' hangs. Midnight Commander also hangs but works on black and white.

My terminal is xterm-256color under X and linux under console.

Other observations:

- it happens on a AMD machine but not on an Intel i.e. not all hardware is affected (couldn't narrow it more)

- same machine, same software stack but with kernel 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 works OK

Red Hat / Fedora :: RPM Kernel Upgrade To Latest Version (SL6)

May 13, 2011

I am relatively new to the Linux System (8 months). I am having issues after upgrading the Scientific Linux 6 kernel from its current 2.6.x version to the latest version that SL6 has available. The issue is that once I install the upgrade and reboot, the internet becomes extremely laggy when scrolling on web pages, so much so that you get a ripple like effect as your scrolling. Which doesn't occur in the current kernel i am using.

Current Kernel is: 2.6.32-71.18.2.el6
New Kernel RPM update is: 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6

I wish I could figure out the problem but I am having trouble identifying what exactly the current kernel has that the new one doesn't that would cause the internet lag. I have read other topics with similar kernel update problems, but none have expressed an internet problem & only an internet problem from a kernel update.

Software :: Can't Boot Fedora 12 With Latest Kernel

Jul 18, 2010

I am running the 64-bit version of Fedora 12 on an MacBookPro5,1 Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 Gigabytes or RAM.

I updated my system to use kernel 2.6.32.16-141.fc12.x86_64. Now when I try to boot the machine to that kernel, I'm left with a blank screen except for a blinking underscore cursor in the upper left corner after going through the load progress bar animation that appears at the bottom of the scene when Fedora is booting up.

I have my system configured to use the nVidia drivers for OpenGL 3D acceleration

I have to boot to previous kernel to have a usable system.

What can I do so that the system will boot up properly with the latest kernel?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Boot Failure After Latest Kernel Update (12)?

Mar 14, 2010

Dual Boot: Fedora 12 and XP Dell 505I've had trouble with the latest kernel update.I updated a bunch of packages recently (including Xorg and kernel), and noticed a severe flickering after the update on my center monitor (Samsung T260 - the laptop display did not exhibit the flickering behavior). I backed out all the changes and started updating package by package. After I updated the kernel (again) I rebooted and here's where the fun part is -

I no longer get anything, except the cursor. No grub menu, no grub prompt. I rebooted and ran the rescue disk and followed the procedurery and point grub at the right boot partition - see here. However (obviously or I wouldn't be posting) that failed to work. I still get a blinking cursor and dead system on boot up.

Fedora Hardware :: Latest Kernel Killed WIFI ( Atheros )?

Feb 4, 2010

Last night I installed F12 x86_64 from a liveUSB in my laptop with Atheros wireless. During the install process and after the first boot I was able to surf the web connected to the wireless network (signal was good and all). After I updated the whole system, however, the wireless network is no longer available (Network Manager does not even show the Wireless interface or the network list).

Obviously a laptop without wireless is mostly worthless. What am I supposed to do to get my (perfectly working*) wireless network back?

General :: Fedora 14 - Kernel Not Compatible With Latest Version Of VBox

Jan 21, 2011

I have install windows XP and Fedora-14-X86_64 on dual boot, I want to run other OS on fedora by using Virtual machine. I have download and installed VirtaulBox-4.0.0 successfully but I cannot able to start it. I got error about Vbox driver not installed [error code:1908]. I have also installed DKMS package, but also didn't work.

Finally I found the actual problem was kernel not compatible with latest version of vbox and I need to update my kernel-headers. I also meet that solution by using command: yum install binutils gcc make patch libgomp glibc-headers glibc-devel kernel-headers kernel-devel and its work fine, this command download and install the kernel compatible VirtualBox-3.2.* and now its works fine.

But problem is that when I booting my PC, it shows 3 options for entering OS rather then 2.
1. Fedora-14 (2.6.35.10.74.X86_64) [which is new one/updated after using that command]
2. Fedora-14 (2.6.35.6.45fc14.X86_64) [which is new one/updated after using that command]
3. Other [windows XP]
How can i delete that old version- No.2?

Fedora Installation :: Modern Dangers Of /boot Partition 2) Safest Way To Get Rid Of /boot?

Mar 13, 2010

My most recent F11 -> F12 was a near-fiasco, because I had the bad luck of foolishly having two distinct physical drives in the same system, where the /(root) partition on each drive had exact same UUID (result of partition cloning and neglect to change the UUID on the copy)

BUT! the UUID redundancy was not the initial trigger of my problems (its near-disastrousness played itself out only while I was REMEDYING the initial problem). The initial trigger: insufficient space on my /boot partition. "preupgrade" neglected to properly assess the space and/or warn me about it before proceeding.

In addition, the automatic cycling out of grub kernel entries came to bite me (part of many factors of the near-fiasco) because after the unfinished upgrade i had only one working kernel left to boot into, until I messed up that remaining one (too long a story), and then grub-install messed up my booting because of duplicate UUID. At any rate, at the end of what looked like a good preupgrade-reboot-upgrade-package-install process the post-install phase lingered a looong time, then I found myself booted into the old Fedora 11 kernel with absolutely NO modules (corresponding /lib/modules had been erased by the upgrade!) Somehow the system ran, but no USB, no wifi, no ethernet, no way to easily place the right kernel rpm onto the hard drive (had to unscrew the drive, etc., to copy over the correct kernel rpm). (Plus, file /boot/preupgrade/vmlinuz, left over from the arrested upgrade, was NOT the right target upgrade kernel version (2.6.32.9-70.fc12), so it didn't help either because it didn't have its modules either. The target /lib/modules (version 2.6.32.9-70.fc12) WERE there, but the kernel itself was NOT, due to upgrade running out of space on the /boot partition).

(Oh, and the preupgrade/upgrade had deleted my /var/cache/yum/preupgrade/ packages; hence my inability to quickly (re)install the 2.6.32.9-70.fc12 kernel rpm -- why!? it hadn't successfully finished the process!)

(Also, FWIW, i ended up rescuing the system through "rpm -i --force <kernel>", many an F12 rescue boot, chrooting, /boot/grub/grub.conf & fstab edits, tune2fs/uuidgen, running grub on command-line ("setup (hd0)"), etc., etc.)

So, any tips out there on phasing out the old-school /boot partition scheme, the safest and easiest way (without destroying a working system, of course)?

Debian :: How To Get A KDE Desktop With The Latest Kernel

Jul 4, 2010

Since an Aptitude upgrade to my Debian Squeeze operating system (using video driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-195.36.24) some weeks ago, which installed linux kernel 2.6-32-5-686, grub has been giving me two boot options (in addition to MS Windows). I expect that this is quite normal so far ...

However, if I try to boot using this new kernel, rather than kernel 2.6-32-3-686, I can only get the command line interface. Everything seems to work after boot with the new kernel, except (although the system seems to load kdm successfully) I cannot start X. Booting with the old kernel still takes me to the desktop as normal (I've set KDE to automatically bypass kdm, as I'm the only user of this standalone PC), and because of this I've been slow to address the issue with kernel 2.6-32-5-686, but since the problem doesn't seem to be going away with more recent upgrades, I suppose a request to the forum is the only way to go:

So, is the problem I'm having the same as was addressed in this thread? If not, would I only need to reinstall the same NVIDIA video driver so that it recognises the new kernel? If not, would installing NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.35 solve the problem, and would I have to deinstall the old video driver first? Finally, if and when I solve the problem, can I safely deinstall the old 2.6-32-3-68 kernel?

OpenSUSE Install :: Latest Kernel - What Are The Differences Between 11.4 And 11.3

Mar 20, 2011

Installed 11.4 yesterday and wanted to check i'm running the latest kernel. uname -a brings up (and a little other thing before hand)

2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-21 10:34:10 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is this the latest version. i don't know how old 11.4 is, but there weren't a great deal of updates. have added a few repos like packman etc.

Kept /home as the same and what a difference that made. i used to do a fresh install every time, it saved just about all my settings!!! just needed a few more programs and stuff but nothing major.

Really quick, clean install. just need to delete my old root partition for the old 11.3 system.

Would also just like to know are there many differences between 11.3 and 11.4?
