OpenSUSE Network :: Installed 11.3, CUPS Printing Stopped Working?

Jul 20, 2010

I have been using Opensuse since 11.0, and I never had any problems with the setup of CUPS printing (university based). Now for the first time, after many months of flawless printing using 11.2, after installing 11.3 the printing has stopped working. I use the same method: Print via print server machine -> CUPS server (IPP) and I test the connection. In my 11.2 it shows "OK", in 11.3 (I also tried with firewall off) I am getting the following (I have substituted the actual values with xxx for privacy).

OpenSUSE Hardware :: CUPS 11.3 X64 Doesn't Do Network Printing / Troubleshoot It?

Aug 5, 2010

I have a HP P1005, which is connected to my desktop computer. I have it configured using hp-setup and set it to share across the network. However no matter what I do on an other computer connected to the network I'm unable to detect the printer. With OS 11.2 it all worked smoothly and practically out of the box. Only need was to add CUPS as an allowed service. This option is taken out, apparently it posed a security risk beats me if you only allowed local traffic. In order to open up the port I added in the internal and external zone the following: code...

Still the printer is not detected. If I turn the firewall off on both machines, no printer. If I try to ping it from the host machine it asks whether or not I enabled the firewall (which is turned off!!).

cupsd is running on the server printer. Localhost:631 is correctly configured and printing from my desktop works fine.

OpenSUSE Network :: Cups Printing Server Change Administrator?

Google has given me a couple hints and the cups administration page a little further but I'm now stuck at the end. What I want is a user called admin who belongs to the group printadmin as cups server administrator. What I have done1) I have created a local user called admin user yast user interface , and a group called printadmin. Added admin to the group printadmin2) I changed the line in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf.SystemGroup sys roottoSystemGroup printadmin 3) Changed all instances of of Authtype from Basic to Digest (Allows me to have a file called passwd.md5 in /etc/cups/ with the name of the allowed cups admins inside)4) Ran the following command to create and add admin.Code:lppasswd -a -g printadmin dmin This is what I receive after running the commandlppasswd -a -g printadmin administratorEnter password:Enter password again:lppasswd: Die Kennwortdatei wird verwendet!

OpenSUSE :: Openoffice Stopped Working When Installed Sun Java?

Feb 1, 2011

Yesterday I disinstalled with yast java-1_6_0-openjdk-1.6.0.0_b20.1.9.2-0.2.1-x86_64 and java-1_6_0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0_b20.1.9.2-0.2.1-x86_64 (which were installed as part of our sitewide suse 11.3 installation) and replaced them with java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 and java-1_6_0-sun-plugin-1.6.0.u22-1.2.1-x86_64 (et al) to solve my problem about bad graphics quality in firefox applets as described and suggested in this other postl. That successfully solved my applet problem, but I just discovered it triggered a new problem with openoffice . I tried opening an existing sxc document and got this error message:[Java framework]sunjavaplugin.so could not load Java runtime library: file:///usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so.

It looks like that openoffice is still looking into the old openjdk instead of the new sun java. How can I repoint it to use the current java (assuming it really needs it) ? Apparently even entering openoffice on a new document gives error in a popupOpenOffice org requires a JRE to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version or install a new JRE and select it under Tools-Options-OpenOffice org-Java ... but since openoffice does not start I cannot access those options I guess (or is such stuff located elsewhere, and if so where) ?

Debian :: CUPS Stopped Working With HP LaserJet 4 Plus

Jun 22, 2010

My printer is a HP laserjet 4 Plus. It used to work with the gutenprint drivers pretty much since always.I don't know when it broke, because I don't use it that often. I have tried with the generic postscript driver, with the gutenprint driver, with the j4dith driver and with the hplib driver. Basically, what happens is that all jobs never finish processing in the queue. On the other hand cups-pdf still works.

OpenSUSE Network :: CUPS Does Not Recognize Ubuntu Cups Server On Intranet?

Feb 24, 2010

But on my Suse laptop, the printer is not recognized. Using the YaST printer Configuations, I choose the option "Recieve Printer Information from Remote CUPS servers. But no printer is found.But... when I choose Do All Yout Printing Directly via One Remote CUPS server and enter the correct IP address (192.168.1.100), the printer is found andI am sure the printer info is broadcasted because it shows up on my second Ubuntu PC. OpenSUSE Network :: NetworkManager Stopped Working After Encrypting The Disk ?

Jul 22, 2011

I managed to kill KNetworkManager today and I'm not sure what I did. This is a netbook running openSUSE 11.4 with all updates applied and KDE 3.5 (from the openSUSE repository). Normally, I use knetworkmanager to connect to the Internet. Everything was working fine this morning and today I decided to apply whole disk encryption (using cryptsetup and luks) to it.

So, I backed up the files, encrypted the partitions, made some adjustments to /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst, and copied the files back. Everything is working fine, except for knetworkmanager. When it goes to connect, it starts off with the "gray Earth" (to represent no connection) and then it switches to the "connecting" icon for a fraction of a second, and then it's back to the "gray Earth". Looking at the output of iwconfig, it hasn't connected to the router at all (the essid is blank).

The connection works fine using ifup. I tried using cnetworkmanager (the console version) and it spits out errors like this:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: CUPS Not Properly Printing Multipage Documents On SUSE 11.4?

Aug 4, 2011

CUPS 1.4.6.70.1note label of version number might be wrong) on my suse 11.4 linux machine with a canon pixma mp460 printer and gnome desktop does not properly print multipage documents when asked to.e second page and subsequent pages include an overwrite of another page and are unusable. Looks like previous page is printed on top of current page. I have seen this problem referenced elsewhere on the internet, e.g., linux questions w/o reasonable fix.

Current solution is to print docs one page at a time and all works well but this is more than inconvenient.Note my CUPS package is as downloaded from SUSE 11.4 repos and packman repos per standard software management tool. Note also that the version number label of 1.4.6.70.1 was transmitted using software management from SUSE and doesn't look like a proper version number based upon CUPS version sequence.I've posted this message on CUPS forum and received notice that this version is 3rd party software and not theirs and they have no responsibility. I assume then that the version is really from SUSE. That is why I am posting message at SUSE forum.I have found and made a change to increase ghostscript memory by pasting a line into the cups conf file. That has not solved the problem even after stopping are restarting cupsd service

OpenSUSE Network :: NFS Automount Stopped Working - System Error: Connection Refused

Jul 6, 2010

I got connecting to our NAS over NFS working perfectly. Direct NAS Reading & Writing - How? But on Saturday I found out it had stopped working. For no apparent reason, not straight after an update either I don't think. When I manually try to mount --verbose:

mount 192.168.100.14:/IHL /mnt/IHL --verbose
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Tue Jul 6 14:48:32 2010
mount.nfs: text-based options: 'addr=192.168.100.14'
mount.nfs: Unable to connect to 192.168.100.14:111, errno 111 (Connection refused)
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '192.168.100.14:/IHL' failed: System Error: Connection refused

Corresponding fstab line that used to work just fine. 192.168.100.14:/IHL /mnt/IHL nfs auto 0 0 For now, I can drop back to Samba but this is a PITA as I can't open OpenOffice documents and write to them directly on the NAS. The fact smb://192.168.100.14/IHL works proves networking wise we're cool too. There is no firewall between this PC and the NAS, the NAS is instructed to allow my PC's LAN IP full access. OpenSuse's software firewall has been told to allow NFS Client too. Why would this setup break out of nowhere? How can I debug this best? I see nothing relevant in /var/log/messages How can I get it to work again? A hopeful reboot didn't do its usual wonders...

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Epson Stylus Photo R300 Stopped Printing?

Feb 10, 2010

I'm running OpenSUSE 11.0 (64 bit). I have an Epson Stylus Photo R300 printer that used to work just fine. Apparently there was an update to the CUPS software that I applied and now the printer is no longer working.

Through examining the error_log file in /var/log/cups I found that two files were missing from /usr/lib/cups/filter. These files existed in the /usr/lib64/cups/filter directory so I linked them to the /usr/lib/cups/filter directory. That cleared up two errors.

When I send a "Print Self Test Page" command from the CUPS Printers page, I get the following error:

Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Print-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/EPSON_Stylus_Photo_R300) from localhost

When I attempt to send a print job from an application like gedit or OpenOffice Writer, I get the following error:

Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Send-Document (ipp://localhost:631/printers/EPSON_Stylus_Photo_R300) from localhost

I've crawled all through the openSUSE forums and 'googled' all sorts of variations for these errors and found nothing useful. I'm hoping someone here might have a clue as to where I might go next to fix this.

Like I said, it was working before and now it's not so there must be something in a recent CUPS release that has messed things up.

Fedora :: 5 Second Delay Printing From Cups?

Aug 26, 2010

Not sure if this is hardware or software so I am raising the question here. I have an Ithaca 280 printer that worked great on fedora 8 with cups 1.3.3. When I upgraded my server and installed Fedora 12 with cups 1.4.2 i noticed a 5 second delay between sending a print job to the printer and it actually printing. This issue doesnt happen with laser printers, just the ithaca thermal printer. I have tested this with 10 other ithaca 280 printers and all of them have the same result. I am using a raw driver, and it is an IP based printer setup for Jetdirect in cups. The setup is identical on a Fedora 8 server as it is on this Fedora 12 server. I have even taken the steps to upgrade to cups 1.4.4 just to see if it was corrected in a newer version, but the issue is still there. I have a utility that writes the raw text directly to the printer which i used to test that it wasnt an issue with the printer or its internal print server. That utility allows the document to print immediately.

what is causing this delay and how to correct it? If not, does anyone know how to print directly to the printer using cups instead of letting it go to the queue first like cups normally does for print jobs?

Ubuntu :: Server 10.4 Printing - Without Cups

I'm not looking to setup a print server. I want to print documents TO an existing network printer while I'm logged in via ssh to my Ubuntu Server 10.4 command line shell. Things like admin emails, pdf docs, etc.

All the clients on my LAN are able to print directly to the network printer without any help from the Ubuntu Server. I don't want to setup CUPS on the server unless that's the only way to print from the server itself to a networked printer.

Do I need CUPS or can I print from the command line in some other way?

Ubuntu :: CUPS Japanese Text Printing?

I am facing a peculiar issue when printing Japanese text through CUPS (though I am not sure if this is the right forum).

I developed a Java application (that uses a graphical object to print to a PrinterJob class) that prints text (of Japanese characters) to a printer. When I login in en_US/en_UK locale, the Japanese characters get printed from my Java app just fine. However, when I login in ja_JP and give a print job through my Java app, no Japanese text is printed at all. I get characters from only within the ASCII subset printed instead. I am using Serif and Courier New fonts in my app. Relevant details are:
