how to make Alt-Tab useful in Gnome 3?Also I would like to switch between workspaces horizontally. It does not make sense to lock it at one option. Plus switching horizontally is much quicker since no finger movement is involved.
Just installed fc13 and wasn't given the option for kde.... I like the desktop effect and Widgets.... is there a way to do the same with gnome???? If not what packages do I. Install from the apps list?
Firstly i have to inform you that I'm completely new to fedora and linux.. i have an IBM R51 laptop with Pentium M 1.5Ghz, RAM 512mb and intel 855GME graphics. I'd like to install fedora 15 with gnome 3 and take advantage fully of its capabilities! as far as I'm concerned i should upgrade my RAM and graphics.. could you please suggest me an option, for the RAM and the graphics, that will be compatible with my existing hardware? (I'm a bit of an amateur and so i can't really tell the model of the motherboard
Is there a way for the time at the top of the screen to display seconds as well as the date ?
My clock seems to be about :40 seconds off... before i upgraded from f-13 i had my time controlled by ntp(how to verify ntp is enabled) ? even with network time = yes, it seems to lag a little.
I figured out the network time. it is under a whole separate menu for some reason.
Is there a way to get weather/ temperature like in classic gnome ?
Rite now my clock reads: tue 3:50 pm...Is there a way i can make it read: tue, aug 20, 2011 3:50:45 pm
I really enjoy using both ubuntu and fedora. I am finding that I am in some ways perfering fedora over ubuntu, but think that the look and feel of fedora is awful. Basically I would like to make fedora 14 look exactly like Ubuntu (11.04) with unity disabled so technically it is gnome 2.32.1 I really like the "unity-icon-theme" ubuntu offers, as well as the Ubuntu-Mono-Dark
now in ubuntu say I wanted to download the unity icon theme, I would type in:
sudo apt-get install unity-icon-theme and it takes care of the rest by itself,
now in fedora I type: sudo yum install unity-icon-theme Of course it does not work, how would I manually go about copying the unity-icon-theme and or Ubuntu-Mono-Dark theme from Ubuntu over to fedora? I am unsure if "Controls" and "Windows Borders" use the same method, but I would also like to manually copy and enable them in fedora. So the end result is a Fedora box looking exactly like a Ubuntu box?
installed F12 and noticed that the volume control applet is now all Pulseaudio rubbish, not Alsa like gmixer used to be. So now I don't seem to be able to mute my speakers when I'm using my headset, which in F10 I could do by just muting LFE/Center.Note I don't want the speakers to be disabled when I have the headphones plugged in (like Jack does) I just want to be able to control volume of the mixer channels individually - as sometimes I'll be playing music through the speakers and will receive a Skype call and want to mute the music, but also don't want the Skype sound coming out of the speakers - just the headphones.
I've tried setting up 4.1+input, 5.1+input, 4.0+input etc; but for some reason, even though the PulseAudio mixer thing has 5 individual sliders, they do nothing as they "jump" back to 100% when you slide them - even with the channels unlocked. gmixer and alsamixer do the job, but pulseaudio is the applet and only seems to control the master volume, not the individual channels. Any ideas - or perhaps a way to make gnome-volume-control revert back to actually being gmixer?
I cannot right click with my mouse on the gnome applications menu to get the properties/edit menu option. This is on F12 on 64bit. Instead I get: "help, remove from panel, lock panel". I dont have this problem with anything else on the top bar.

Turns out I have to install package alacarte and then go to System > Preferences > Main Menu
I just installed Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 11.04 through UGR Linux and everything works fine! The only problem is that I cannot run make and make install. I get the following errors:
Code: alexandros@Autobot:~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell-extensions$ make && make install Making all in extensions make[1]: Entering directory `/home/alexandros/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell-extensions/extensions'[code]........
I use gnome-mplayer 1.0.0 and Totem Movie Player 2.30.2 to view videos Both read subtitles well from srt files. But both are not able to read {a6} command in the srt files.
NOTE:- {a6} command serves the purpose of putting the subtitles on top of the screen, making it possible for subbers to display lyrics/additional footnotes on top, while at the same time, having the dialogues to show in their usual position.
Is there are way to force either of them to read the special commands properly?
After restart I cannot login to gnome, when I press ALT + CTRL + F1 it switch to text mode and I'm able to login with the same username and password.
Although when I enter the password on the gnome login it come a black screen for preparation to login but it go back to main login info, Bye the way I saved the username and password to auto login and I surprised after restart didn't login automatically.
I already created a test account adduser test but still not able to login whith the new one and the old.
I just installed Debian 8 into a virtual machine, and in the software selection panel I checked "Debian desktop ..." (default) and "gnome". However, after boot the system did not seem familiar. In particular, I did not find any directories that include "gnome" in their name. Question: how to make the system use gnome?
Code: ./kernelversion.c:13:30: fatal error: linux/utsrelease.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. Makefile.inc:81: *** Cannot detect kernel version - please check compiler and KERNELPATH. Stop.
I would do a little more homework, but I already did a lot only to get stuck here, and I need to solve this sooner rather than later.
I have already: installed devel and desktop-devel and given up about 350mb of diskspace to
Code: zypper in -t pattern devel_C_C++
Only to still not have the make function available. If that install was unecessary, I'm hoping there's a simple uninstall version of that line.
Reading what it's saying, it sounds like I may have all the right kit but it needs a nudge in the direction of the kernel??
I read some stuff about making Gnome apps fit in with the KDE desktop but not the other way around. I use a few KDE apps and it would be nice to have their themes fit in with my Gnome desktop if possible
In System > Preferences > Keyboard shortcuts, it does not allow you to change Alt+F1 to just Mod4. Or is there a command that will open the Gnome main menu?
I can't make use of the Gnome log file viewer anymore. Seconds after I start it, it will gray out and proceed to steadily lay claim to all my available RAM. It doesn't matter which log I choose, or if I don't choose one at all. Same thing. I have 1GB RAM, and when I took the included screencap the log viewer had taken almost 80% of it. It was at 90% before I forced a shutdown of the process. Does anyone have the slightest idea what might be causing this?
The screen at 1920x1080 with tiny gnome icon. Almost unreadable, can the icons be bigger? KDE has excellent icons but for some mystery the system cannot run KDE. All gnome, not just ubuntu, have 10.4 now runs excellent need to keep it. New hp system, 1 terabite ram, nvidia graphics system 2 gig. Soon to switch to larger monitor, but those icons...Tried cairo icons, no use, trouble.
The panel is not expanded and the autohide buttons are not checked. As you can see I've set the background to transparent and removed the shadow via ccsm. The only thing that doesn't look nice are the "grabbers" to move the panel arround. Can they be modified to be transparent too? Maybe editing the theme?
I cannot set the panel to expand because I use a dock which would be partly covered by the panel.
Scheduled Tasks is giving me a hard time. I have a command set for 23:00 daily as "gthumb -f ~/Pictures/ScheduledPic.jpg", but when the time rolls around, nothing happens. The strange thing is, it does work when I press "Run scheduled task." I get the same results if I select a different time or change it to "google-chrome ~/Pictures/ScheduledPic.jpg". My other scheduled task, a Perl script, works fine.
I have hddtemp installed and I get outputs of my HDD temperature in Terminal, but I can't see a the HDD temp sensor in the Preferences menu of my Sensors Applet.
P.S. I have my /etc/default/hddtemp edited to:
Code: # [automatically edited by postinst, do not change line format or set it to # anything but false or true ] RUN_DAEMON="true" # List of devices you want to use with hddtemp. If none specified, # hddtemp will probe standard devices. DISKS="/dev/sda"
My Drive is a 7200.11 Barracuda split in /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda5, I use LinuxMint 10 64-bit w/ Gnome.
EDIT: I just had to reboot after I changed to RUN_DAEMON="true",
I have disabled GDM and start GNOME with gnome-session from .xinitrc . Now when i press Sleep button, GNOME says it cannot suspend. The same is with pressing suspend or hibernate buttons on Shutdown window. At the same time "sudo pm-suspend" and "sudo pm-hibernate" DO work. So, i would like to disable GNOME from listening to ACPI events and to configure everything via acpid scripts. I tried to stop acpid to see if GNOME will not receive events in this case, but it still does. So, the question: how can i stop GNOME from listening to ACPI events?
Did not find much here regarding building Gnome 2.30 from source. I'm using jhbuild to build the gnome 2.30 desktop. I have everything, to my knowledge, installed to build gnome. I get an error when trying to build the libIDL library. Anyone have any clue as to what I need installed or changed in the configuration file to build libIDL?
Using a default terminal and bash, there is no functionality to search the standard output of commands.
One can gain such functionality using other tools, like emacs shell or screen, but I am wondering why such a useful feature is missing, I do remember a simple C-F used to work in terminals.
Is there a way to make the Gnome terminal app support output search? or is there a better terminal app that support searching output natively?
when i start an application it usually places it in the upper left corner or lower right corner or something like that.. but never in the middle of my screen. How can I configure GNOME to always open applications in the middle of my screen..?
I was wondering if it is at all possible to use CSS code to make the Gnome panel clock text blink. I Googled a bunch of CSS code which is supposedly used to create a blinking text effect but none work in the Gnome panel clock. Is there any sort of CSS code which can do that? If so, what is it?
