View 1 RepliesDid not find much here regarding building Gnome 2.30 from source. I'm using jhbuild to build the gnome 2.30 desktop. I have everything, to my knowledge, installed to build gnome. I get an error when trying to build the libIDL library. Anyone have any clue as to what I need installed or changed in the configuration file to build libIDL?

View 1 Replies View RelatedHave been working most of the day on this usb full install (Jesiie xfce) trying to make it leaner/faster and trying to get rid of minor annoyances like "watchdog: watchdog0 is not shutting down" (couldn't btw), finally managed to disable "You have mail" by commenting out "session optional pam_ mail.so standard" in /etc/pam.d/login. Every little change registers in terms of seconds of boot time saved and how the system responds because, well, i'm booting from a usb 2 drive.Followed some suggestions from "Reduce Debian", removed cups-common, some foreign language locales and man pages. what i can safely do with systemctl.

I'm using icedove with the calendar extension. Since quite some time there is a pending update from 31.7 to 31.8 which is held back by apt:
Code: Select all> apt --installed list icedove iceowl-extension

icedove/testing,now 31.7.0-1 amd64 [installed,upgradable to: 31.8.0-1~deb8u1]

> sudo apt upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
[code]....
Seems like the problem lies with the package libvpx1. The correct version (>= 1.3) seems to be installed but under the name libvpx2.
Code: Select all> sudo apt install icedove
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
icedove : Depends: libvpx1 (>= 1.3.0) but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
> apt list --installed | grep libvpx
libvpx2/testing,now 1.4.0-4 amd64 [installed,automatic]

What can be done, or should the dependency in the icedove package be updated?
I am trying to run the SDK for Meego with Qt. When I try to launch my simulator I get the error message: Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". The answer I got on Meego's forum is that I am missing glx extensions. I have tried to find a way to get the glx extensions but I do not seem to get it. My searches on the web all point to Nvidia, but I have got ATI. I run Lenny 5.0.6 amd64.

I use Fluxbox as the window manager in X Window. I installed hibernate packages and gnome power management. I set the idle time at 30 minutes using the gnome power management program. It doesn't suspend at all. The monitor only shuts off during idle.
So, I logged in as root, started X. Without .xinitrc gnome desktop manager launched. As I clicked shutdown, it showed a dialog box asking hibernate / suspend / restart / etc. And then, I chose the [hibernate], the system shut down and came back to previous status when system restarted.
Which gnome program does control hibernate / suspend?
Is there anyway that I can control hibernate / suspend in command? I just need to make a little script and assign it to a launch key so that I can suspend the system when it's on idle.
after i installed latest ATI proprietary drivers ( 9.3 legacy drivers) for my HP compaq nc6000 with a "Mobility Radeon 9600" the standby and the suspension stopped working, i mean, if i try to suspend or hibernate my laptop, it closes X (this is fine) but after it gets freezed on the whole screen black with just a blinking underscore and nothing more, neither an error message after reboot. All i can do is to force shutdown by pressing poweron button for 5 secs.I'm running on a lenny, stable with stable repo. What can i do to understand where does this problem comes from and maybe fix it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with garbled graphics after resuming from hibernate or logging out (when the screen blinks and goes back to the display manager). It only occurs when I do either, about half the time. What happens is the edges of everything "bleed" horizontally (left to right) in red and green colors and black text on a white background becomes entirely unreadable (but white text on a black background is readable and just looks a little bolder). If I shut down or restart the computer (softly) when the screen has garbled, then it will freeze and not even the SysRq keys work (I have enabled it in /etc/sysctl.conf). Then the only thing left is to do a hard restart (in which case there's a voice saying "System failed VGA test" before BIOS/GRUB loads) or poweroff. Powering it off and then starting it again works fine. I did a google image search and this is sort of how it looks when it freezes: link
Once the screen has garbled (but only if it hasn't frozen) I can use SysRq to issue S E S I S U O to shut it off and then power it on, and that works: then I get a non-garbled command line after sigterm and it shuts off and starts up properly. If I issue B instead of O (to restart) I get the "System failed VGA test" on boot (but it doesn't freeze when shutting down). Hibernation is easy enough to fix by just turning it off (it's not a laptop so I don't need it anyway), but it still happens sometimes when I log out. So as long as I never change users the system works perfectly and this never happens. I've tried GNOME, Xfce4, OpenBox without any DE, gdm3 and SLiM and the problem persists in all of them.
Some system details:
Debian Squeeze i386 (using only software from the stable main repository)
Kernel: 2.6.32-5-686
Video card: ATI Radeon 9600SE (using the preinstalled open source drivers)
Motherboard: ASUS P4P 800-E
By the way: sometimes when it's in the process of shutting off (when the display hasn't been corrupted), after it kills all graphical applications, I can see that the CLI text gets the garbled look, but at that point the poweroff works without freezing. This is the most similar sounding bug that I could find: [URL]. Unfortunately I can't find a solution to it, and most people who have similar problems seem to get either the garbled graphics or the freezes, but not both. Also: how safe is it to keep shutting off with SysRq to recover from this? Can I get disk errors?
I use gnome-mplayer 1.0.0 and Totem Movie Player 2.30.2 to view videos Both read subtitles well from srt files. But both are not able to read {a6} command in the srt files.
NOTE:- {a6} command serves the purpose of putting the subtitles on top of the screen, making it possible for subbers to display lyrics/additional footnotes on top, while at the same time, having the dialogues to show in their usual position.
Is there are way to force either of them to read the special commands properly?
I am trying to strip the .wav file extension from a file name so that I can pass the result to lame encoder. I started to write a BASH script that looks like this:
Code:
for f in /home/user/wavfiles*; do FILE=basename $f .wav; lame $FILE; done
It doesn't work very well though. For the life of me I can't seem to discover how to use basename in a suitable way for a script like this.
I just installed Debian 8 into a virtual machine, and in the software selection panel I checked "Debian desktop ..." (default) and "gnome". However, after boot the system did not seem familiar. In particular, I did not find any directories that include "gnome" in their name. Question: how to make the system use gnome?

After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!
Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo to Canonical. But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT. Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out) I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume. I also cannot make my computer hibernate, and if I try to put it to sleep when it's on critical power, it will continue waking up again until it runs so hard out of power it just dies.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install for ubuntu 11.04. Having seen the power of Gnome 3 (with Fedora) I installed it right away. Some minor problem arose and I had to deinstall accessibility themes and install the "standard" gnome themes. However there is one more problem and I've added a screen shot to show the problem. As you can see, the gnome desktop seems pretty cool but however the tweak tool doesn't show properly (empathy and other apps neither).
Besides the fact that the themes don't properly show in this screen I also get the error "User Theme extension not enabled" now I get the feeling these problems are related, but how do I fix it? I've searched everywhere but as far as I know I seem to be the only one with this problem. I would love to take the full advantage of a Gnome 3 desktop but this is getting to be a big "bump" in the road.
I found this extension [URL]
But haven't been able to get it working.
I copied the files to the mentioned directory ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/
I tried setting the file permissions to full
Code:
david@aitdes2:~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/gnomeshell@pidgin.im$ ls -l
total 24
-rwxrwxrwx 1 david david 14219 2011-04-29 18:31 extension.js

-rwxrwxrwx 1 david david 177 2011-04-29 18:31 stylesheet.css
No idea what else I could try.
I know this is possible in GUI gnome. But is it possible to do it too in shell command? Let say if i type this in shell:
#file.txt
then it will open gnome-editor in nautilus which open file.txt. gnome is the desktop manager. nautilus is the explorer windows in gnome. gnome-editor is one like notepad in MS windows.
I am a newbie in linux n programming, I need to use ubuntu for my research at school about building an IMS server use openims.
The problem is I need an additional script in C/C++ for my openims server to make an extension call. I hope one number can represent 3 client as receiver/operator. So, when I call the number, the server can forward the call to those three receiver by hunt.
1st call will be forward to the 1st receiver.
2nd call will be forward to the 2nd receiver.
3rd call will be forward to the 3rd receiver.
then, 4th call will be forward back to the 1st receiver, etc.

I have installed Fedora 15 Alpha with GNOME 3. Everything is working fine. However, I can't see any option to hibernate or shutdown.
In the top panel when I click my user name, I only have one option and that is to suspend. Normally I like to hibernate or shutdown. And I can't see any option of what to do when I close my netbook. Normally, I prefer to hibernate.
i've written small tool in C which makes measurements on my router (OpenWrt White Russian).
It is working as a deamon. If the tool is started manually, everything works fine. If it is started per script on startup, the following system call doesn't work :
Code: sprintf(command,"/bin/cat /root/%s%s | /usr/bin/ssh -p2222 user(at)host -i /root/.ssh/id_rsa "/bin/cat >> result/%s%s"", apmac, source, apmac, dest);
rc = system (command); the returned rc in this case is 256.
first i thought it is a problems with the user rights for the tool, so i have added +s to it. but that didn't help. as i said, when the daemon is started by hand, the system call works fine.
I'm looking for a good tutorial to install minimal Debian with Gnome on USB Memory stick and make it bootable.
