Ubuntu :: Make Fedora Look Exactly Like 11.04 With Unity Disabled So Technically It Is Gnome 2.32.1?
May 17, 2011
I really enjoy using both ubuntu and fedora. I am finding that I am in some ways perfering fedora over ubuntu, but think that the look and feel of fedora is awful. Basically I would like to make fedora 14 look exactly like Ubuntu (11.04) with unity disabled so technically it is gnome 2.32.1 I really like the "unity-icon-theme" ubuntu offers, as well as the Ubuntu-Mono-Dark
now in ubuntu say I wanted to download the unity icon theme, I would type in:
sudo apt-get install unity-icon-theme and it takes care of the rest by itself,
now in fedora I type: sudo yum install unity-icon-theme Of course it does not work, how would I manually go about copying the unity-icon-theme and or Ubuntu-Mono-Dark theme from Ubuntu over to fedora? I am unsure if "Controls" and "Windows Borders" use the same method, but I would also like to manually copy and enable them in fedora. So the end result is a Fedora box looking exactly like a Ubuntu box?

So I was fooling around with compiz settings manager and was trying to get the cube to rotate around, and by doing so I disabled some plugins (because I was prompted to do so) and now Unity is gone and everything opens in the upper left hand corner so much so that I can't move the window. It was pretty rash for me just to disable plugins, how to get everything back to normal.

Please excuse my ignorance, but I need to get it straight. I've been reading and trying to find out more about these three new desktop environments, but still am rather confused. I have had Unity on my netbook for a couple of months now and know it inside out (more or less by now). The problem is: what is the main difference between Gnome 3 and Gnome Shell?
To my understanding Gnome 3 will be a continuation of the panelled Gnome we are so used to? But then I read the panels will be gone forever, so I'm confused again Gnome Shell is somewhat similar-looking to Unity, but I haven't had a chance to try it properly yet.

I have recently installed Lubuntu 11.04 on an old system. the problem is that it hangs at startup when tries to "Starting Bluetooth". I have searched through this forum and the web and it seems that the problem has something to do with my TV Card. But I can't remove the card because it is a part of my Graphic Card which is an "ATI Radeon 8500DV All In Wonder". I can start the machine with Lubuntu Live CD, and so I thought that maybe I can change a value in a file from installed Lubuntu through Live session that makes the Bluetooth Service disabled at startup.

how to make Alt-Tab useful in Gnome 3?Also I would like to switch between workspaces horizontally. It does not make sense to lock it at one option. Plus switching horizontally is much quicker since no finger movement is involved.

Will 11.10 have Unity or Gnome 3 or something else?Just a simple question. Right now I'm running 11.04 but I don't use unity I use gnome classic. I've used Gnome3 in a Fedora installment before I went back to Ubuntu and it was pretty nice. I've read a lot of stuff and as far as I could gather people don't like unity, so I would think they would switch back to something.

(Running Ubuntu 11.04, 64bit) After a mad frenzy of attempts to fix a broken compiz profile of Unity it seems that Unity now runs on top of gnome when I boot into the Ubuntu Classic option. This makes for a mix of problems and is obviously not intended operation. Is it possible to correct this? Even by a radical reinstall of both the Gnome and Unity desktop environments?

Is there a way for the time at the top of the screen to display seconds as well as the date ?
My clock seems to be about :40 seconds off... before i upgraded from f-13 i had my time controlled by ntp(how to verify ntp is enabled) ? even with network time = yes, it seems to lag a little.
I figured out the network time. it is under a whole separate menu for some reason.
Is there a way to get weather/ temperature like in classic gnome ?
Rite now my clock reads: tue 3:50 pm...Is there a way i can make it read: tue, aug 20, 2011 3:50:45 pm

I recently added the ubuntu netbook edition to my desktop via ubuntu software center.
I have found that when using any theme I installed for Gnome, it only changes a few aspects of the desktop, like the window border is always the ambiance window border.
way to get my Equinox Gnome theme to work in the netbook edition.

When I first started using Unity, I configured the dual monitor system under the settings program. I then changed my xorg.conf, but Unity is ignoring that configuration and switching to its own. I think this might have something to do with RandR, but I'm not sure. Is there a way to make Unity use the xorg.conf configuration?

So the first couple of days using Unity with my dual monitors went fine. Today I plugged in my laptop to the second monitor, and while the top bar and the side menu are being displayed, all the desktop icons, background, and actual program windows are black. Basically I just have the menu bar and the launcher. The windows are still there when I unplug the second monitor.

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 final, then it said "it appears that your hardware is incompatible with unity, go to login screen, select ubuntu classic". I use nvidia, it had a compatibility problems with linux, so it made ubuntu mouse cursor sporadically disappear and fedora never appear at all, so I installed the proprietary nvidia driver, rebooted to finish installation and unity worked!
(This step may not be nedded on top right, light switch icon -> switch from you -> on top, select yourself -> on bottom, select ubuntu classic temporarily, use ubuntu classic)
(This step is definitely needed System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers -> nvidia current recommended -> Install -> Restart to complete installation permanently, use ubuntu unity)
Enjoy default settings
