Ubuntu :: Make KDE Applications Fit In Better With The Gnome Environment?
Jan 6, 2010
I read some stuff about making Gnome apps fit in with the KDE desktop but not the other way around. I use a few KDE apps and it would be nice to have their themes fit in with my Gnome desktop if possible
I cannot right click with my mouse on the gnome applications menu to get the properties/edit menu option. This is on F12 on 64bit. Instead I get: "help, remove from panel, lock panel". I dont have this problem with anything else on the top bar.

Turns out I have to install package alacarte and then go to System > Preferences > Main Menu
After a crash I cannot log in to the GNOME environment anymore, after entering the password the login animation is being displayed for a while and then screen returns to gdm. GNOME failsafe works fine. I don't know what information may be useful to debug this problem. ~/.xsession-errors contains
Code: /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US. Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit
I'm trying to configure subclipse with JAVAHL for ganymede. I have everything installed and the right version of the JAVAHL.
I have seen that a lot of people uses java.library.path in the eclipse.ini file to set it up or just write a script for launching eclipse.
I have read about the .gnomerc file but i couldn't find it or create one and make it work. I'm using a 9.04 ubuntu.. is there anyway to configure an environment variable for gnome? What i want is just click on the shotcut and have it working, not having to run a script or all that stuff.
I have a question about switching between desktop environments like kde and gnome. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 with gnome 2.x and with a really cool theme I found and mixed. I would like to check kde desktop because I kinda like the appearance of it. I have also cairo dock and compiz configured for my needs. my question is whether I can switch to kde desktop without losing my customized gnome environment if I decide to switch back to gnome? (I know that to switch session you need to log out but that's not the point) the next question is how can I install kde without losing the customized gnome theme I have ?( if the answer for the first question is negative)
the final question is whether I lose data when I switch desktop and if do than what specifically.
Is the new Ubuntu still running with Gnome as the desktop environment? I seem to remember hearing somewhere that it was something else - does that mean I could uninstall Gnome?
I have done this installations a couple of times before and everytime it's been working for me.
I emailed their support about it as well.
They told me it should work by just doing these first steps, but since it didn't they asked to take a look at it. So they did.
I got this mail back from them:
It seemed that your server is missing some packages/services.
Therefore, I need to ask you first if you acknowledge the ability of being charged with the additional support fee of 37,25 Euro per 15 minutes support?
I will never pay more for 15 minutes of support then I payed for the server thats for sure..
I want of learn what are gnome-sessions, how are they managed, windows managers etc. I also want to learn how display turns from textual (u know, black background and white text) to complete graphical screen during startup.
(Using Ver. 10.04-lucid lynx) This is because, at random, Gnome environment will have some kind of problem, leaving me with a black screen, like the terminal but not it, where I can enter my password and that's just about all. There seems to be no way to enter the graphical linux environment. I was forced to wipe the hard drive clean twice because of this and both times I reinstalled lucid lynx.
i've been trying to make a decision on which desktop environment to use and i've been using a few over the past week to try to decide which one. I liked gnome 2.x previously but have been really turned off it since it's not supported by Slack and 2.x is no longer even supported by gnome. I tried xfce, since it's gtk2 app as well and i really wanted to like it, i did; but there is just some things that make me wish i was using gnome. Anyways, i was wondering which third party gnome would be best suited for me. I'm using Slackware 13.37 and i want gnome 2.x, not 3.
Pat's old documentation recommended, http://gsb.sf.net http://gware.sf.net
and i checked out them sights, but the last updates seemed to have been years ago.
I would like to install opensuse 11.2 on my children's new pc with nvidia 7025 graphic onboard card. which desktop environment is better between kde or gnome? I haven't a preference yet but I wolud like to install a light graphic system that can be used by a child of 5 yo.
I just installed Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 11.04 through UGR Linux and everything works fine! The only problem is that I cannot run make and make install. I get the following errors:
Code: alexandros@Autobot:~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell-extensions$ make && make install Making all in extensions make[1]: Entering directory `/home/alexandros/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell-extensions/extensions'[code]........
I am using gnome 3 and I installed neverputt from the repos, and when I click the icon in applications, it doesn't launch. Running it from the terminal gives:
Code: Command 'neverputt' is available in '/usr/games/neverputt' The command could not be located because '/usr/games' is not included in the PATH
I've installed and used SUSE 11.2 with KDE environment. In generally, I've completely satisfied with it. However I want to change KDE into Gnome without re-install SUSE.
I install ubuntu server 11.04 I select ubuntu server from boot menu then enter username and password and then i see a command line line and a black background How i can setup a graphical app (some thing like genome) for my server I do not know any thing Any body can explain all step of this for me how I connect to internet how download graphical app and install it? (I connect to web with windows 7 and adsl internet)
I understand that some of them may work only with Xorg (e.g. toggle screens), but screen and kbd backlight and volume may work at tty too (because I can change this from tty when xorg is down). I know how to do it all from the console, but I want to bind keys with actions.
E.g. I can change kbd backlight with dbus and attach this action to key in my wm config, but it is not what I want. I want to make it global. I don’t understand which layer may provide the functionality for all users. Now only two keys works as I expect: toggle wifi and toggle touchpad. I haven’t set it up, it works out of the box.
Asus N56VZ, Debian stretch. Code: Select alluname -a Linux isquabook 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1 (2015-05-24) x86_64 GNU/Linux
I am trying to install "GNOME Desktop Environment" on my server. i used the following command: yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment" I got it from this tutorial: [URL].. Now when i started the installation on my centOS 5 server. i got the following error please see this image: [URL].. Now i wanted to know how can i fix that issue.
Are there any tutorials for this? My sister wants a really easy application that pops a random quotation every time she presses on an icon (probably appearing in the panel). I'm fairly experienced in programming, but i've never done desktop apps for ubuntu.
i have installed Ubuntu 11.04 i.e Natty Narhwal(m i spelling it right?) i want my Ubuntu system to remember currently running applications even when i shut it down. It was possible in ubuntu 10.10...it was in startup applications(i guess). I cant hibernate. It fails to hibernate. Let me know if anyone knows anything.
I run Gnome and i want KDE applications to use the same icon set as i have for my Gnome desktop. I have searched the file system and found a folder called "default.kde4" in /usr/share/icons. I assume this is where KDE applications pull their icons from. Firstly, this folder is a linked folder. How do i find out where the original folder that it is linked to is? Secondly, i am assuming, that the KDE icons won't be a name for name match for the icons i am using in Gnome (Faenza just in case anyone is curious). What is the easiest way to get the KDE icons changed for the one's i am using in Gnome?
i can run kde apps in gnome, and vice versa. So, it got me wondering, why does there need to be kde applications and gnome applications? if they both will run on the other, then whats the difference? does it have to do with how they're written? is one better than the other?
I've switched to Xubuntu and the procedure is obviously different How can I make my Windows key open the Applications Menu in Xubuntu?I found the keyboard shortcuts in the Settings menu but I see no option for adding a shortcut. It only shows the existing shortcuts.
I am unable to successfully start either the XFCE or Gnome desktops, in Gnome the my wallpaper is displayed but that is all. This problem appeared yesterday night after my hard disk filled up, then all Gnome programs began to crash, also "df" failed to terminate. I was able to clear some space from the terminal (around 2 GB).
I was able to run an xterm so I attempted to load the components of Gnome manually from the terminal, to see which were problematic. I found that every application which uses Gnome fails to execute, producing a segmentation fault. A Java crash informed me that a "problematic frame" producing SIGSEGV was libgnomevfs-2.so.0. I ran md5sum on all libraries matching the pattern /usr/lib/*gnome*, the checksums are identical to those on a working Ubuntu installation, so it is unlikely to be corruption of a library.
I have managed to determine that the problem is not in GLib or GTK+ as I wrote a simple (hello world) GTK+ application which executes without problem.Furthermore (due to a lack of Gnome's network manager) I am without a network connection on the problematic computer.
