Tried running a batch script via cron and dialog. The script runs but the dialog message doesn't appear on my screen.

Is it possible to create a loadable module for a C app that could be loaded into the app in runtime from a CLI or web interface?I would like the code to handle a particular type of structure to be "swappable" for lack of a better term. This would allow different modules to be used based on the users wants without having to mess with code. A different module could be downloaded into the application directory then loaded. Basicaly the code would be handed a pointer process it then return it.

Ubuntu :: Make Fedora Look Exactly Like 11.04 With Unity Disabled So Technically It Is Gnome 2.32.1?

May 17, 2011

I really enjoy using both ubuntu and fedora. I am finding that I am in some ways perfering fedora over ubuntu, but think that the look and feel of fedora is awful. Basically I would like to make fedora 14 look exactly like Ubuntu (11.04) with unity disabled so technically it is gnome 2.32.1 I really like the "unity-icon-theme" ubuntu offers, as well as the Ubuntu-Mono-Dark

now in ubuntu say I wanted to download the unity icon theme, I would type in:

sudo apt-get install unity-icon-theme and it takes care of the rest by itself,

now in fedora I type: sudo yum install unity-icon-theme Of course it does not work, how would I manually go about copying the unity-icon-theme and or Ubuntu-Mono-Dark theme from Ubuntu over to fedora? I am unsure if "Controls" and "Windows Borders" use the same method, but I would also like to manually copy and enable them in fedora. So the end result is a Fedora box looking exactly like a Ubuntu box?

Fedora :: Make Gnome-volume-control Revert Back To Actually Being Gmixer?

Jan 16, 2010

installed F12 and noticed that the volume control applet is now all Pulseaudio rubbish, not Alsa like gmixer used to be. So now I don't seem to be able to mute my speakers when I'm using my headset, which in F10 I could do by just muting LFE/Center.Note I don't want the speakers to be disabled when I have the headphones plugged in (like Jack does) I just want to be able to control volume of the mixer channels individually - as sometimes I'll be playing music through the speakers and will receive a Skype call and want to mute the music, but also don't want the Skype sound coming out of the speakers - just the headphones.

I've tried setting up 4.1+input, 5.1+input, 4.0+input etc; but for some reason, even though the PulseAudio mixer thing has 5 individual sliders, they do nothing as they "jump" back to 100% when you slide them - even with the channels unlocked. gmixer and alsamixer do the job, but pulseaudio is the applet and only seems to control the master volume, not the individual channels. Any ideas - or perhaps a way to make gnome-volume-control revert back to actually being gmixer?

Red Hat :: 5 Install All Packages Or Similar To Initial Install?

May 20, 2009

I have a user running a retail copy of RH 5 Ent. and isn't sure what package he needs. He is a developer and when installing other instances of RH he just checked off basically all of the packages under development during the initial installer. Now, he's trying to add packages but they require dependencies and he is not able to auto-satisfy those dependencies.

Is there a way that I can get back to that menu during the initial installation and let him check off all the boxes that he wants, or can I have RH auto-install all packages from DVD or install all required packages from DVD?

Fedora :: Error Gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 When Choose A Minimal Install Then Add ONLY The Defaults Of The "GNOME Desktop" Package

Ubuntu :: Custom Software Install Script Or Cd Or Similar?

Jul 21, 2010

I saw something interesting online somewhere and failed to bookmark it and is not in my history (different install in the past) Now I can't find it. It told of a way to make a cd or dvd with the deb packages of your choice, then you could install a fresh copy of ubuntu, switch to that cd, activate it, and a while later, voila, all your software is installed. No need to pick and hunt and wear your mouse finger out in synaptic or wait on downloads.

Can someone teach me how or direct me to the method in question? It was a fairly automated process, I don't remember it requiring me to make a script or anything technical, just choose the software somehow and tell it to burn the cd. Anything similar to this would be acceptable. I just want to load a dvd or two up with software and run them after I install Ubuntu.

I know I can just save the deb files manually to a cd or other backup medium and click them one at a time, but the problem there is that if I want to have gparted for example, I also have to remember to get dmraid, kpartx, etc. and manually install them too. Even this is not an issue as long as there is no certain order of installing those packages, if that ALWAYS is the case.

I don't want to make a custom ubuntu install cd with said software because I'm not certain I can do this and have an "alt" cd which is what I want to use to install ubuntu, or can I? (I do manual partitioning with encryption, or what if it all won't fit on a single cd) I want something "fresher" and more virginal than a full system backup/restore.

OpenSUSE Install :: Restoring The Entire ETC Directory In Similar Hardware?

May 4, 2011

We are looking for a solution that allows us to restore a servers "identity" in the event of hardware failure...ie Name, IP address, dhcpd, named configs etc.

We have ISO images of the appliance images that contains all the software and stuff. There is no real data on these servers.

If we backup the entire ETC directory and perhaps the /var/lib can we simply restore that and get everything back?

What concerns me is how some versions of Suse use UUID for the network config and the mounts points.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Make Gnome-mplayer Recognize Commands Like "{a6}" Inside Srt Files On 11.3 - GNOME 2.30.2

Jan 10, 2011

I use gnome-mplayer 1.0.0 and Totem Movie Player 2.30.2 to view videos Both read subtitles well from srt files. But both are not able to read {a6} command in the srt files.

NOTE:- {a6} command serves the purpose of putting the subtitles on top of the screen, making it possible for subbers to display lyrics/additional footnotes on top, while at the same time, having the dialogues to show in their usual position.

Is there are way to force either of them to read the special commands properly?

OpenSUSE Install :: Install Error - Config Defaults For GNOME For GNOME Power Manager Have Not Been Installed Correctly

Mar 4, 2010

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;

GNOME failed to load telling me:

Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.

So I

Code:

To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:

Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.

So I try

Code:

To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error

Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.

So I

Code:

And get the following

I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run

Code:

On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run

Code:

To mount the device.

I end up with:

Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)

So, I

Code:

And see 9 partitionitions

Code:

Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get

plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.

I try

Code:

On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try

Code:

And run into the error:

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)

Good thing is there is a

Code:

Since space is a problem, I

Code:

On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to

Code:

I still get the error

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override

Code:

For package update tells me

cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w

Code:

For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

Fedora Networking :: Run Script Upon Network Connection Similar To If-up.d

Jan 16, 2010

I recently switched from ubuntu to fedora and had a script to mount and umount sshfs when the network changed states. I placed the scripts in /etc/network/if-up.d/ and /etc/network/if-down.d/ and they were run any time the network went up or down. The closest thing I've been able to find is editing the ifup and ifdown scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripting/, but that looks like it would be broken after an update. I'd also rather not use a script with ping because that wouldn't work well when the network goes up and down several times.I've been looking for a while and haven't been able to find a method similar to debian on fedora. Is there something I overlooked?
