Ubuntu :: U10.4 Cannot Login To Gnome / Make It Possible?
Jun 24, 2010
After restart I cannot login to gnome, when I press ALT + CTRL + F1 it switch to text mode and I'm able to login with the same username and password.
Although when I enter the password on the gnome login it come a black screen for preparation to login but it go back to main login info, Bye the way I saved the username and password to auto login and I surprised after restart didn't login automatically.
I already created a test account adduser test but still not able to login whith the new one and the old.

I just installed Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 11.04 through UGR Linux and everything works fine! The only problem is that I cannot run make and make install. I get the following errors:
Code:
alexandros@Autobot:~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell-extensions$ make && make install
Making all in extensions
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/alexandros/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell-extensions/extensions'[code]........

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell GX240. I have severe difficulty logging in. If I try to login on GNOME or GNOME fail safe mode , I just cant get in . I keep getting the login screen again. I am able to go into terminal mode. Sometimes I have to try upto 100 times to login in GNOME or failsafe mode. Once I am in everything is fine. Is there a way to do some troublshooting? Also transfer to USB sticks is very slow - sometimes as slow as 1MB per min. Is this normal with Ubuntu?

I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.

I use gnome-mplayer 1.0.0 and Totem Movie Player 2.30.2 to view videos Both read subtitles well from srt files. But both are not able to read {a6} command in the srt files.
NOTE:- {a6} command serves the purpose of putting the subtitles on top of the screen, making it possible for subbers to display lyrics/additional footnotes on top, while at the same time, having the dialogues to show in their usual position.
Is there are way to force either of them to read the special commands properly?

I have a problem using Ubuntu 10.04. When I try to login, the screen turns black or white for a second and then returns to the login screen, without giving any error. Logging in in tty1 works fine though.
I have already tried some commands that might be of use. "sudo gdm" gives the following error:
Code:
/etc/profile: 29: [[: not found
** (gdm-binary:2265): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
** (gdm-binary:2265): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out
"gdmsetup" gives this:
Code:

I was eager to try GNOME 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 (because I wasn't very satisfied with Unity, like almost everybody around) so I installed it using this guide:http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-t...4-194085.shtmlAfter rebooting the system (to finish the installation), I've got an error message while trying to login:Quote:Could not update ICEauthority file /home/<username>/.ICEauthorityI've googled for some time and found different 'solutions', however none of them seems to be working. What can be done with a system like this? I'm not able to login, how can I downgrade the system?

I have today done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10. Afer the install I needed to upgrade my video driver (nVidia GeForce MX). I managed to find some instructions to uninstall the existing Nouveau driver and install the nVidia one. This all worked absolutely fine. The first time.
On subsequent logins after the login screen the system just hangs. I get a background screen with shades or purple and a working mouse but nothing else.
I can get to a command prompt (CTRL-ALT-F1) and Ubuntu seems to be working fine - it just seems to be a graphics problem.

downloaded and installed Gnome 3 on top of Ubuntu 11.04, Gnome 3's login screen appears and offers the following login options: Robert/Automatic Login/Other. Selection get nothing except the audio signal.
Have Login/restart/suspend in the upper right corner. Alt-f2 gets me to root login, except my 11.04 root login and password isn't accepted, so can't get in a root. I think that it is the Gnome GUI, as I have seen something about installing Compiz etc. I could just reinstall 11.04 or 10.10 for that matter, but hate to give up. So, if I could find out how to bring up the termainal, and then how to get to where I could add compiz or something??

I've both tried installing GNOME 3 on Ubuntu 11.04 (via ppa) and Fedora Core 15, but I can't use GNOME shell up to 10 minutes continuously. It freezes every time. Sometimes I see "Panic occurred". My chipset is Intel 915.

I have a web server running Ubuntu Maverick Server Edition. I changed the /etc/motd file to something custom (some awesome ASCII art). This changes the login for every single user on the entire system. My question is this: Is there a way to change that login file and make it different for each user or is that the only file and it can only be done system-wide.

My login screen currently mirrors the image across both of my monitors, which are different sizes, causing one of the two images to be ugly and stretched. After logging in the monitors are configured correctly. Is there a way to either 1) disable one of the monitors during login, or 2) use both monitors without mirroring the image?

I'm writing a point-of-sale application in Perl/Tk, to run on Ubuntu. For cashier accounts, I plan to just use normal Linux accounts. Cashier login will be done by scanning a badge with a barcode ID on it. Our barcode scanners are older serial-port types. Thus, I'd like to login to the X (Gnome) desktop, yet read the username (and password) via a serial port such as /dev/ttyS0.

Yesterday I did a successful upgrade to 10.04. Today, after a few hours of using and a few reboots, when I provide my password in GDM, the screen turns black and gets me back to the GDM. The same with recovery mode. When I turn onto the terminal I can't see any letters but a bunch of blurred lines on the top of the screen. In recovery mode the terminal works properly.GDM also works properly. Neither graphics, nor the resolution has changed.

I'm running a fresh install of Lucid without any issues thus far. I have my computer setup to log me in automatically, without requesting a password.
I installed Gnome-do and set it up to run at login (as I always have). After a reboot, my system is not responding to input from my mouse or keyboard. I can move my cursor, but it will not accept input.
I see gnome-do, which is partially covered by the "Unlock keyring" dialog" (which always comes up, I think to unlock my wifi).

I just installed GS following the instructions here:[URL]... and the classic way of getting GS to start at login (adding gnome-shell --replace in start up applications) doesnt work.
To start GS now we have to use the command "~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell/src/gnome-shell --replace" via the terminal adding that to start up doesnt work either, does anyone know how to get GS to start at login?

I've seen lots of posts all over the Internet that advise users to check the "Run command as a login shell" checkbox in GNOME Terminal under Edit->Profile Preferences->Title and Command.
This makes gnome-terminal run bash/csh/tcsh/ksh as a login shell, which it does not do by default. In turn, running gnome-terminal as a login shell sources the system and user login scripts. This sets up things like colored ls etc.
It seems like gnome-terminal should be a login shell by default. Why isn't it? I've never seen a good explanation of why gnome-terminal isn't a login shell. The "Run command as a login shell" checkbox must be unchecked by default for some good reason, right?
