I have a home server that I'd like to put into standby for a specified period of time (like from 1AM to 9AM) daily. How could I make this happen, so that it goes to sleep and wakes up automatically?

But now I am wondering how to force windows into sleep or suspend remotely from Linux.
It seems that there is no "net rpc SUSPEND" or "net rpc STANDBY" option available.
how to perform such remote operation?
I just bought a Logitech V470 bluetooth mouse. It's no problem to let it work under Koala 9.10 (gnome), but after shutdown/standby/sleep, it doesn't work anymore. With my USB mouse, I have to click the bluetooth icon and select 'switch off bluetooth'. After that, I click 'switch on bluetooth' and bluetooth works again. I thought switching on and off bluetooth with the applet is the same as 'sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start/stop', but it isn't! The previous command greyes out/in the bluetooth icon, but it doesn't resume my bluetooth. If 'sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart' would work, I would be able to add this line into /etc/pm/sleep.d, so it's automatically loaded on resume.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've just put together a 10.04 server using a GA-D525TUD atom board. I've installed gnome desktop too. I'm trying to get 4 sata drives to go into standby, but hdparm seems to be ignoring the settings. If i issue hdparm -y /dev/sdx the drive duly goes into standby and stays in standby until accessed. I've put entries in rc.local along with the hdparm.conf settings, but still no joy.

I have what I think is a somewhat different failure of standby than I've seen listed on other threads, and I'm stumped.The system hangs on this for a while, then comes back to the login screen without going into standby. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am going nuts because this should a simple thing and for some reason it's not. 1. I'm just trying to use NTP to set the time automatically. I've done numerous installs and had it work fine. However for my Fedora 11 box and this Fedora 13 box, it's not working. I'm getting a vague error "unable to connect to server." Which could mean anything. As near as I can tell, it should be simple:
a. Select to use NTP.
b. Adjust the local firewall to allow connections at 123 (ntp)
c. If necessary, adjust the router settings for port 123.
I have tried sending port 123 traffic directly to my Fedora 13 machine, but same error. I've tried using other choices of ntp server (like the North America pool). No dice. I've had two separate routers, first a Dlink and now a Cisco. Same problem. I've checked the SELinux logs for errors but didn't notice anything obvious (that doesn't mean much -- I'm not much of an SELinux guru). I've set up Fedora 14 at work and it connected just fine. Didn't have to open anything other than the local port on the Fedora firewall. No network/router adjustments needed.
It's not a giant thing but it's driving me nuts. Anyone out there have any suggestions? Particularly big obvious things that maybe I've overlooked? Does some other setting override this NTP time? Does using this require use of GMT? Something like that?
Running Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot Windows 7 laptop.
On "suspend," the wireless card appears to close connections correctly. Then, >15 minutes later, the laptop's wifi LED lights up and the laptop generates heat.
The computer should be on standby, but instead it's waking itself up and running down the battery.
Are there any programs that might be failing to suspend for sleep? Are there any settings to prevent the wifi card from waking the computer?
I only noticed this because the laptop was getting hot and the battery was wearing down.
Is it possible to let a Linux PC put itself into sleep mode at 1 am, and wake up, by itself at 6 am?

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 server edition (twice, just to be sure) and the installation ran fine, but when I try to boot into the system, i get past the BIOS loading screen then my monitor just goes into power saving mode and I can't get it to see a signal from the PC. I know the OS is running, because I can ssh into it from my laptop, and I know the monitor works, because that machine had a windows OS on it before and that worked fine with the same monitor. I had thought it might be a graphics card thing with ubuntu trying to push out at a resolution not supported by the monitor, but I find that unlikely as it's brand new this month. If anyone has any idea of something I can try to diagnose the problem, that would be great. As I said, I still have ssh access to the PC, so I can basically try anything on it that I could if I was physically at the box itself.

I'm using robocopy to copy the files. But i have a small problem with sleep. Every 30mins or maybe an hour knoppix goes to sleep and my transfer stops. How do i change the time or disable it completely? so i dont have to tap a key every 30mins
Ok so I have had this problem for over a month I downloaded the beta version of ubuntu 10.10 and when I tried to use it all i got to see was the splash screen, then the screen made a weird noise and went to sleep
I tried everything but I didn't get to fix it so I thought oh well i'll be using jaunty jacklope while I wait for the final release
so october 10 finally comes and I connect my pc to my plasma tv because is the only screen on my house that doesn't go on sleep mode when i try to use ubuntu 10.10 and i update everything then i try to connect it to my old screen and it goes back to sleep again

They all work fine except that grub wont automatically select one. This wouldn't be too much of a problem but this is a headless server and I can't boot into ubuntu without a keyboard. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a strange and very frustrating problem with my Ubuntu Server 9.10 install on an old (2003/2004) eMachines m6807 laptop.It goes into some sort of standby state in which it stops responding to ping/ssh, stops serving web interfaces, etc. It wakes instantly on the press of a keyboard button - I had another computer ping it repeatedly and watched them time out, and they start responding instantly after a key press.Rather oddly, the system clock is wrong after coming out of the standby state - it hasn't advanced since going into standby.
A probably irrelevant detail: it also blanks the screen. I haven't checked whether the blanking of the screen coincides with going non-responsive: I could, if this is relevant. -- I just noticed it in a non-responsive state with the screen not blanked, so I guess they're not coincident events.This happens very soon after booting or waking it - maybe 10 minutes or so? I haven't timed it precisely.It's also a relatively clean install of Ubuntu Server - a month old, with few packages installed and no custom editing of configuration files.If you anyone can help me shed some light on what's going on and how I might fix it
I have several file servers in our offices and I am relatively new to Ubuntu / Linux. I get notices that there are updates for the server software from time to time. Is it typical to update everything when available or should I follow "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..." mentality?I would hate for everything to be working fine and then have an update throw me a curve.

But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

I've installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 on a small VIA C7 pc. Every now and then (it can take days or hours) the server goes to sleep. It can't be reached by network. If I hit the keyboard it comes to life within a second.I've looked in the bios and I cannot find any option that would prevent this. I used to run Debian Lenny on the same machine and never experienced the problem.

I have read a few other's postings and have found that this has happens on more than just mine. I've installed the very same Karmic custom DVD onto other computers, including laptops, and sounds works after wakeup on them just fine. So I suspect there is something with my Gateway that is causing it. In the end, I have to reboot simply to get the audio to return.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Fedora 10 box I am using as a web development server. I have most everything working. I am trying to use sendmail as an MTA for sending out emails and I am having problems having the messages delivered. The error always comes up as connection timed out. I have attempted to telnet to many different MX server on port 25 from the Fedora box and each time I try I never get a connection.
This made me think that it might be something with ISP doing port filtering to prevent SPAM or something, however I can telnet to port 25 from different computer on the network. I also have stopped IPTABLES in an effort to try and resolve this issue and am still getting connections timed out.
I have run TCPDUMP while trying to telnet to port 25 to an MX server from the Fedora 10 server and all I see are out bound packets. I also explored the idea that I might of had some kind of weird routing issue on my firewall. I am currently using a Juniper NetScreen 5GT with an ANY/ANY outbound rule. I do not currently have SMTP open on the firewall as I am not planning on accepting mail here.
The best I can figure as telneting to port 25 from windows computers on the same network as the Fedora server works just fine, yet it does not work from the Fedora Server is that it must be some thing on the Fedora box itself, but I have no clue as to what I could be.
After I close lid on my laptop, it goes to sleep, but after I open it up, it never wakes up.
