Jun 23, 2011I'm looking to set up a server with attached mass storage device and tape autoloader to run linux. It's set up under Windows at the moment. Goal is to have users, connecting from individual workstations and laptops, backup their data to the linux server. On their personal machine, some users run linux, some MacOS, some Windows. I plan to set up the 5 500 GB drives as RAID5. I understand that if setting up as software raid the format is "physical volume for RAID". Under this setup, will Windows users be able to read/write and function as expected? I can't assume only linux user access.

Feb 1, 2010I got some documents scanned today and had them put in a USB drive. The shopkeeper informed me that it has a virus, yet he transferred the files onto the USB drive. When I put it into my computer ten minutes later, the drive was not getting mounted. I read up and tried installing usbmount. After installing that, I managed to mount the drive. However, the drive was read-only on Ubuntu. On Windows, I found a virus and tried unsuccessfully to delete it (read-only). I tried again on Ubuntu, but didn't manage to delete the infected file (ReCyCleR/sEtuP.exe). I have now backed up all the files on the disk (except, obviously, the ReCyCleR directory). When I try to format the drive using gParted, I get:

Ubuntu :: Cannot Format FC Hard Drive - Unable To Read
Sep 8, 2010Below is results from attempt at formatting my hard drive. As you can see a driver is installed, but not working. Perhaps something is missing? Seems a bit odd that a "unable to read" comes back when disk data is reported. The drive just went through a low level format. BTW this is a fiber channel drive. Also on board are 5 scsi drives. Adaptec raid card. Not sure if that would have any relevance, but there you are.

Feb 25, 2011I've got some trouble trying to format a SD card. I tried to format it in the GUI and the terminal, but couldn't make it. I couldn't even copy or move any file to the directory in the SD card, even logged as root.
It's a SD card from a digital camera. When I insert it in the camera, it says the card is blocked, so that it's not possible to take any picture.
I tried using "fdisk" to set a new fyle system in it, and tried "mkdosfs" trying to format it under the current file system.

Jun 12, 2011I was attempting to reformat a 16GB MicroSD card in my camera when the battery died mid-way. After that, any time I try to read the card in my camera, it gives me a "Card Error" and does not allow me to reformat it in my camera.
So, I thought I would plug the camera in to the laptop with it set to host the card as media when plugged in as USB, in an attempt to fix the formatting issue.
However, when I plug it in to my linux machine, it does not register as a device (e.g., /dev/sda) due to some errors, therefore I cannot reformat it. Essentially, I think I need to fix the partition table but I'm not sure how to when it doesn't register as a device. code...
Ubuntu :: 10.04 Doesn't Boot With The Latest Kernal?
Apr 29, 2010After I upgraded from 9.10, I restarted and waited. ubuntu boot screen froze after a little bit, and the my caplock and scrolllock started flashing (I believe this is the kernel panicking) Then I tried safe mode and it did the same thing when is was saying something about sensors. So I then went to grub and started it with an old kernel and it booted fine (without the splash screen though) what should I do?
EDIT: ok the kernel version it is not working with is version 2.6.32-21 and it does work in 2.6.31-21. Also, it now doesn't say anything about sensors. It panics after App-armor loads ans skips Firefox's profile (or something like that)

General :: Latest X Doesn't Work On Thinkpad A30p?
Mar 8, 2010I upgraded to the new packages that came out in early March. Since then I can't run X. If I use a depth greater than 8 my system locks up: blank screen, no response to keyboard or mouse. If I use depth 8 most of the colors on the screen are black, making it effectively unusable. I can exit with ctl-alt-backspace though. I rolled back to the previous versions of the X packages and have no problem. I use 'radeon'
video with the ATI drivers. I can't start X with the VGA, VESA, or FBDEV drivers: it reports 'undefined symbol: resVgaShared' I have a Thinkpad A30p with ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY (AGP) (ChipID = 0x4c59). I build my own kernel. I'm on 2.6.33. I have 512 MB RAM. All other software comes from Slackware packages and are up-to-date.

Apr 10, 2010klipper doesn't always store the latest clipboard contents in its history in kde 4.3.5. I have "ignore selection" and "separate clipboard and selection" set in Klippers settings. When i open a new program, for example - kwrite, type some text in it, select some of it and hit ctrl+c - copied text doesn't show up in klippers history list. It seems that klipper misses the first copy operation done in newly launched applications, only by copying the same (or some other) text again klippers menu entry shows up. This seems to happen with only newly launched application, when i had kwrite window already open, opening a second window and performing copy worked fine with klipper.

Could I format the 8g FAT32 SDHC with gparted to a 1g FAT16 partition with the rest of the space left un-formatted so an SD reader could handle it?

The problem is, my computer won't boot the disc on startup, won't read it at all, and thus I can't install it. How can I make Ubuntu read the Windows 7 disc? All other discs work fine.
Its not just my disc- I've used this disc on other computers no problem, and my Ubuntu reads other discs without any problems.

Feb 23, 2011I like this linux distribution more than the others that i have used, because is more stable for my work. But there are some little problems that I can't solve. I'm using it with a laptop HP G60 and i can run OpenOffice, Mozilla and some other programs (python, grass, qgis) that used for work at the office, but when I go home and want to watch a movie with my girl, listen some music or any other simple task, i find a lot of little problems:
1. Adjust the bright of the screen, the Power Management Guidance don't do it and I really need it.
2. Can't play movies in VLC "No suitable decoder module. VLC does not support the audio or video format XVID. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this"
3. And today I can't play music because there is a message "KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed" this is: Output HDA Intel, INTEL HDMI 0 (HDMI Audio Output)
I know maybe these problems are stupid but in windows is easier to fix them. I'm tired of search in google because i just find solved problems for Ubuntu and it takes a lot of time.

Ubuntu :: Picasa Doesn't Read Ini Files Copied From XP?
Sep 9, 2010I have about 20 000 photos in XP which have mostly been tagged, cropped, etc using Picasa. That Picasa is working OK.
I am shifting my activities from XP to Ubuntu & am just getting to the Photo part.
In Ubuntu, I have the current Picasa (3.0.5744-02) & that is working OK with any new photos I download to Ubuntu & modify in Picasa there.
My next step was to copy a folder of photos from XP to Ubuntu & look at them in Picasa. They copy perfectly & Picasa finds them OK. All the tags are there OK.
But the cropping & other editing from Picasa XP is not seen in Picasa Ubuntu.
The ini file is there & looks the same as ini files generated in Ubuntu.
Should I expect my XP edits to be visible in Ubuntu?
How can I get that to work, without re-editing 20 000 photos?

However, after saving the settings to xorg.conf (using the nvidia-settings application) X should use both monitors after boot, but only the main monitor is used. I first thought that X didn't read xorg.conf at all, but when I put some illegal statements into the file X wouldn't start and gave an error about the illegal statements. It is thus clear that X does read the file, but it just doesn't seem to use the settings in it.

In Dolphin the file is simply sent to trash, no warning. I couldn't find a setting in Dolphin configuration options to change this. I do have "Ask for confirmation. when moving files and folders to trash" unchecked, but even so, if the file is read-only?
Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade - Can't Read Anything - Touchpad Doesn't Work
Feb 8, 2010This weekend I did a distribution upgrade to Karmic, but it didn't go very well. Upon reboot, I see a white ubuntu logo on a black screen. I hear the speakers pop, and the screen flashes several times, sorta like the blank screen is maybe changing video modes. After a while I see what I think is garbled text but is unreadable, and it looks like I can log on even though I can't read anything. Now, booting into recovery mode gets me to a readable prompt. There are no upgrades to apply. Typing gdm from here gets me to the desktop just fine. Also when booting, if I choose an earlier kernel the system boots fine also, except the touchpad doesn't work.
