Mar 14, 2010I've hit a wall here; I'm attempting to find some way by which to view files and cd into directories on a device mounted read-only. So I need the permissions to read, write, execute (and the same with directories), but chmodding is out of the question because I don't want to alter the drive one iota.
I guess what I could do--what I was thinking of initially--was to dupe the whole drive and then mess with permissions. This wouldn't affect the original (actually I'm working on a duplicate of the original, but I'm treating it as if it were the original) but I was hoping for something that would maintain data integrity. This is a forensic application and not altering the data is very important.

Oct 6, 2010I want to simply mount an ext4 file-system onto a normal mount point in Ubuntu (/media/whereever), as read-writable for the current logged-in user, i.e. me.
I don't want to add anything into /etc/fstab, I just want to do it now, manually. I need super-user privileges to mount a device, but then only root can read-write that mount. I've tried various of the mount options, added it into fstab, but with no luck.

Feb 25, 2011I've got some trouble trying to format a SD card. I tried to format it in the GUI and the terminal, but couldn't make it. I couldn't even copy or move any file to the directory in the SD card, even logged as root.
It's a SD card from a digital camera. When I insert it in the camera, it says the card is blocked, so that it's not possible to take any picture.
I tried using "fdisk" to set a new fyle system in it, and tried "mkdosfs" trying to format it under the current file system.

May 6, 2010I have apache2 running on my computer. I want to change the permissions for /var/www/ so that I can edit the files without a problem. Right now I can use the gksudo command, but I'd like to be able to have all the files available when using an IDE like eclipse.

will do, but if I'm not mistaken that would give read/write access to anyone. I'm not in a production environment, so I'm not too worried about security, but I'd like to give anyone else as less permissions as possible. Would this be possible?

Mar 19, 2010Recently updated the kernel in Ubuntu 9.10 and for some reason now, a folder which was not read-only now is. I can't delete anything from it. Have tried using the GUI for changing permissions, however, it has a mind of it's own and won't unlock the folder.

This is not practical for security as the resulting tar.gz file contains a full mysql backup as well as other items that the general public shouldn't be downloading.What permissions do I need to set so that the directory /var/www/site/backups cannot be browsed to in a browser but can be read / written by the CMS when a PHP script calls it?

Jul 4, 2011I'm pretty new to Linux. Though I've used it for a little bit, I barely know any shell commands. I recently migrated from Mint to Fedora. Installation went fine and I thought I was doing great until I tried to copy something onto one of my ntfs partitions (I got them automounted through changing fstab). Now I can't change the permissions with sudo chmod... it says I can, but nothing changes. And, while the folders are listed as allowing rw for the user group I set up, I can't actually change anything. I'm guessing I've done something wrong with my fstab file.

Jun 12, 2011I was attempting to reformat a 16GB MicroSD card in my camera when the battery died mid-way. After that, any time I try to read the card in my camera, it gives me a "Card Error" and does not allow me to reformat it in my camera.
So, I thought I would plug the camera in to the laptop with it set to host the card as media when plugged in as USB, in an attempt to fix the formatting issue.
However, when I plug it in to my linux machine, it does not register as a device (e.g., /dev/sda) due to some errors, therefore I cannot reformat it. Essentially, I think I need to fix the partition table but I'm not sure how to when it doesn't register as a device. code...

Apr 6, 2010I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab

Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.

Feb 1, 2010I got some documents scanned today and had them put in a USB drive. The shopkeeper informed me that it has a virus, yet he transferred the files onto the USB drive. When I put it into my computer ten minutes later, the drive was not getting mounted. I read up and tried installing usbmount. After installing that, I managed to mount the drive. However, the drive was read-only on Ubuntu. On Windows, I found a virus and tried unsuccessfully to delete it (read-only). I tried again on Ubuntu, but didn't manage to delete the infected file (ReCyCleR/sEtuP.exe). I have now backed up all the files on the disk (except, obviously, the ReCyCleR directory). When I try to format the drive using gParted, I get:

Apr 6, 2011Yesterday, I bought a 1TB WD Passport, for backup and storage. It uses NTFS, and I've had no problems manually mounting and moving files to and from it from root. However, I don't like having to be root to in any way modify the data on the drive. In order to avoid this I decided to create a line in fstab that would allow permissions to the user, so I added this to my fstab:

/dev/sdb1/mnt/external ntfs defaults,
noauto, noexec, user, uid=1000, gid=users, umask=0022, nls=utf8 0 0
This allows me to mount, unmount, and peruse the external HDD - however, if this is active, neither the user NOR root have permission to make any changes. The HDD acts as read only, even though there is no "ro" option on my fstab.
