Ubuntu :: Infected USB Pen Drive Read-only - Can't Format
Feb 1, 2010
I got some documents scanned today and had them put in a USB drive. The shopkeeper informed me that it has a virus, yet he transferred the files onto the USB drive. When I put it into my computer ten minutes later, the drive was not getting mounted. I read up and tried installing usbmount. After installing that, I managed to mount the drive. However, the drive was read-only on Ubuntu. On Windows, I found a virus and tried unsuccessfully to delete it (read-only). I tried again on Ubuntu, but didn't manage to delete the infected file (ReCyCleR/sEtuP.exe). I have now backed up all the files on the disk (except, obviously, the ReCyCleR directory). When I try to format the drive using gParted, I get:

Below is results from attempt at formatting my hard drive. As you can see a driver is installed, but not working. Perhaps something is missing? Seems a bit odd that a "unable to read" comes back when disk data is reported. The drive just went through a low level format. BTW this is a fiber channel drive. Also on board are 5 scsi drives. Adaptec raid card. Not sure if that would have any relevance, but there you are.

I am getting a new 4kb sector HDD for my laptop, WD scorpio black 750gb, I would like to image existing partitions on 512bytes sector HDD and move them to the new 4kb sector HDD, what's the best way to do this.
present config is as follows:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders, total 156301488 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
[Code].....
I am planning to keep the same three partitions as the primary partitions on the new drive and add few more logical partitions. I would have liked to move to GPT but since I need Win 7, I am stuck with MBR partiotion table.
Now, I understand how to partition an Advanced format disk, what I want to know is how to move the existing partitions on the 80 Gb disk to the new disk?
I use Clonezilla to copy partitions but it is not compatible unless both the target and the source disks are already using 4096 sector size.
I can use Acronis True Image WD Edition to clone Win 7 but how do I clone Ubuntu?
Also my Laptop's chipset is limited to SATA 1.5, will it cause any issues, I know the bandwidth is not an issue.

I've got some trouble trying to format a SD card. I tried to format it in the GUI and the terminal, but couldn't make it. I couldn't even copy or move any file to the directory in the SD card, even logged as root.
It's a SD card from a digital camera. When I insert it in the camera, it says the card is blocked, so that it's not possible to take any picture.
I tried using "fdisk" to set a new fyle system in it, and tried "mkdosfs" trying to format it under the current file system.

I was attempting to reformat a 16GB MicroSD card in my camera when the battery died mid-way. After that, any time I try to read the card in my camera, it gives me a "Card Error" and does not allow me to reformat it in my camera.
So, I thought I would plug the camera in to the laptop with it set to host the card as media when plugged in as USB, in an attempt to fix the formatting issue.
However, when I plug it in to my linux machine, it does not register as a device (e.g., /dev/sda) due to some errors, therefore I cannot reformat it. Essentially, I think I need to fix the partition table but I'm not sure how to when it doesn't register as a device. code...

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

I'm not sure what to do, but I just rescued photos and documents using ubuntu live cd, gddrescue and photorec. The data carving went fine and I was able to move all of my recovered jpg's into a recovery/jpg folder, as well as my word doc's into a recover/doc folder. I also have recovery/video and recovery/audio. Now here's my problem...
I used the right-click "safely remove drive" from the ubuntu interface and then unplugged my external drive. I then tried to view the recovered photos, etc on my windows 7 desktop, but when I plug in the external drive I get an error and a prompt to "format the drive" so that windows can use it.
I plugged the external drive back into my failed laptop and with the ubuntu live cd can see the drive, but none of the folders display. I can cd "change directories" to all of the folders using a terminal, but still can't see them outside of the terminal. That is, with the ubuntu interface. I'm just trying to finish up recoverying these photos, which I thought I had done.

I'm looking to set up a server with attached mass storage device and tape autoloader to run linux. It's set up under Windows at the moment. Goal is to have users, connecting from individual workstations and laptops, backup their data to the linux server. On their personal machine, some users run linux, some MacOS, some Windows. I plan to set up the 5 500 GB drives as RAID5. I understand that if setting up as software raid the format is "physical volume for RAID". Under this setup, will Windows users be able to read/write and function as expected? I can't assume only linux user access.

I made a bootable Ubuntu installation within my USB stick but now I want to delete it.
First I tried deleting all hidden and no-hidden files and folders but obviously I need to reset the MBR or something.
In System->Administration->Disk Utility I formatted the drive having now a blank device (FAT), but still the Ubuntu image is mounted.
Then I clicked on 'Edit Partition' and uncheck the Bootable checkbox but it returns an error (whether mounted or unmounted the drive is).
This is the return log file of the error:
Quote:
Error modifying partition: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_change_partition: device_file=/dev/sdd, start=19456, new_start=19456, new_size=4013917184, type=0x0b
Entering MS-DOS parser (offset=0, size=4022337024)

How do I completely format the drive removing this bootable Ubuntu installation?

I was running ubuntu as a live cd and I wanted to format my pen drive into an ext3 filesystem. I put in sudo mkfs /dev/sda1, but know im thinking that sda1 was my HDD!! I removed the cd from my computer, and it wont boot up into windows anymore! The only thing that is giving me hope is that the mkfs took about 1 min to format whatever it was formatting (my pen drive or my hdd!!) and my hdd is 500gb big. Is there anyway that I could have accidentaly formatted my HDD?

I have an 80gb hard drive that I used in an xbox for xbmc and it was formatted to whatever it needed to be formatted to for it. Now that I want to use it in my computer, I can't format it back to ext4 or NTFS. It's somewhat recognized, but the partition shows up as unknown. Is there a program that I can get to reformat it? idk if gparted will work cuz it won't startup on the live CD. I will give it a shot once I install ubuntu onto the computer.
