Feb 6, 2011I know that Linux is open source but there must be ways of creating non-open source programs to be run on a Linux system? Does such a thing exist and/or have a name? Would any source code that has been compiled be unable to be read by anyone properly unless the soruce code was released?

Jan 16, 2011I was trying to customise my desktop, and I disabled gnome-panel as I don't need it (and auto-hide wasn't working). Now when I boot up I can't open anything as the "run" dialog using alt + q (changed shortcut from alt + f2) doesn't load, nor does the terminal via shortcuts. I'm using Compiz, and disabled nautilus drawing the desktop so Compiz could do it for me.
Do you know what I can do to get this back or to get the "run" dialog to open again? EDIT: Skype ran as start up, so I got a friend to send me a link, which opened my web browser. I then downloaded a file, and viewed it in nautilus which meant I could get to the terminal and run gnome-panel from there. I can now get it back easily when needed. Do you know if there is a way I can get the "run" dialog to work without needing the gnome-panel running?

Jan 2, 2009We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

Jun 24, 2010My problem has to do with playing a mov video. It's very strange.
- In mplayer I have audio but not video appears.
- In Movie Player I have video but not audio
- In VLC I have not video and the audio is wrong (a lot of noise).
This is the output when I try to open with mplayer:

I am doing all this because I have read on the internet that the open source radeon driver does not enable H/w acceleration properly which means that choppy performance while playing HD movies and / or while playing OpenGL games. Not that OpenGL games don't work, they just work very slowly even with Direct Rendering of Mesa drivers. Then there's this thing about Kernel Mode Setting as well which isn't available in the proprietary ATI driver.

General :: Why Are Programs Available Only In Source
Jul 10, 2010When I go to sites like kde-apps.org or gtk-apps.org i often times find that lots of programs there are available only in source code? Why? Why is it so hard for the developer to compile the package or to make that .deb or .rpm package? I'm sure it's easier for the developer to compile his own program than for a linux user... i don't get this.. why does everything come in source code?

I've found that being able to tell a program what I want it to do specificially has made life much easier. While I was trying Fedora I installed Clementine and I had to install an extra mp3 lib (I installed Fluendo MP3) to enable mp3 support. On my main machine I have also installed Slackware and Clementine and I can play mp3, so I ponder where's Slackware's mp3 lib? I egrep'ed /var/log/packages for "mp3" but I couldn't find any appropriate. Does Slackware use a shared mp3 lib or is the mp3 support in all the programs?

Sep 7, 2010Im trying to install mupen64plus, but to be honest, everything i have installed is from the package manager.I have no idea how to do this through the terminal. But I tried installing the mupen64plus from the package manager, and everytime I open a rom, mupen64plus closes and doesnt load anything....
That version was 1.5, and I downloaded 1.99.3 or whatever it is from the mupen site, but I cant get the sucker to install. There is a install.sh file which I chmod +x too. I then tried, ,/install.sh, make install.
