Is there any open source virtual machine so i can study the source in order to create my own? i'm gonna write my own, so it doesNT matter if license does not allow further development of the code.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWe all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.
I know that Linux is open source but there must be ways of creating non-open source programs to be run on a Linux system? Does such a thing exist and/or have a name? Would any source code that has been compiled be unable to be read by anyone properly unless the soruce code was released?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have the source of the application I want to modify, as well as the list of dependencies I need in order to compile. I got the source code for those and compiled/installed them. I'm fairly sure that all of the dependencies are installed. However, when I go to run the compiler it crashes while parsing some of the code.
I had the application installed before, and it ran. After tinkering around trying to get the source to compile, the app no longer runs either. It crashes, and if run from the CLI, spits out something about not finding one of the files from the SDL library.
So obviously I did something wrong to mess everything up, because I'm in a deeper hole than when I started. Anyone know how I would go about fixing this? Or even starting with a clean slate so that I can have another go at it?
i am already a little bit familiar with linux and now i want to know better the linux OS. i have downloaded the source code of the krnel from the kernel.org and i dont understand the linux source trees organization, so can somebody do me a favor and give me a link to some internet page (or at least a book) that explains that?? i have searched in the internet with the tag:::linux source trees organization and i have not found nothing interesting

The default Ubuntu install comes with a perfectly good open source stand alone pdf viewer, but this means that the browser has to save it to your download directory then run the external viewer, and eventually your download directory is all cluttered up. I would much rather just view the pdf in the browser.Is there no open source browser plugin?

View 1 Replies View RelatedRight now to install software from source I do a ./configure && make && make install which doesn't allow for easy uninstallation (some don't come with an 'uninstall' goal, and if they do you have to keep the source around). I'd like to learn how to create binary RPMs from source tar.gz files (one reason being that it makes for easier uninstallation). I tried the following but it complains with the following errors:

Apparently that's what happens when there is no SPEC file in the tarball. But all the tars I've tried give this same error. Is there a simple way to create binary RPMs from source files - as an example, this source tar [URL].

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been testing with the ATI Catalyst drivers. I have made a package from the 9.12. I have found that they were not working the way I want, so i tried to switch back via synaptic. I have removed everything which had to do to "fglrx"
now when I restart, here is the message i get

For information, it does start in low graphic mode. I have reinstalled the "fglrx" module, but the problem is still the same. If I reinstall the fglrx drivers from synaptic or terminal, I am back with the newer catalyst driver. I cannot switch back to the ubuntu repository one it seem.
I have done the following to try to get the open source back

I want to know how to remove unwanted Open Source Software not listed in Ubuntu Software Center. I tried to used Add/Remove Program. That did not work for me.

I've had no success, however. It seems the most recent release is for Jaunty and I'm running Maverick. I guess there are some pretty well entrenched dependency issues. These talk about it: here and here. There doesn't seem to be a solution anywhere.. Does anyone have a potential solution to this? Has anyone even heard of Chandler?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI am running openSUSE 11.1. I installed the Hypervisor and tools and booted into: 2.6.27.23-0.1-xen. I'm trying to install Ubuntu LTS 8.04.3 as a guest using the "Create a Virtual Machine" GUI/wizard. I specify "other" since no Debian-based distro is offered under "Type of Operating System". Under "Installation Source" for "Operating System Installation" I Add a Virtual Disk of "phy:/dev/sr0" using protocol "phy". It can obviously read the drive since it recognizes that it is 0.6 GB (the media contains a burned & bootable (from ISO) DVD - the files are extracted).
However, when I proceed I am thrown an Error:
"The installation source is unusable." with Details:
"0.6 GB CD-ROM or DVD (phy:/dev/sr0)"
Am I supposed to do something different?
In the past, when I open a gvim session on a remote machine, the title bar of gvim would show the machine name in brackets. I am not sure if this was done by the remote gvim itself, or the local window manager. In the past I have used gnome2, although I am currently using unity (and finding it rather frustrating). Is there some setting I can change to always force remote windows to display the source machine?
