Ubuntu :: Downloaded The Demo Of Penumbra Overture, It Is A .sh File (113Mb) Can't Open The File?
Jun 2, 2010I downloaded the demo of Penumbra Overture, it is a .sh file (113Mb). I can't open the file. In a terminal I ran chmod +x PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh and then sudo ./PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh and I get an error "./PenumbraOvertureDemo-2553.sh: 2: Syntax error: "(" unexpected" . The quotation marks are my own. Is the file corrupted? One of my lugmates thinks it might be a shar file, but Karmic says that it is a shell script. Another friend says that it is too large to be a shell script. Here is the code:

Jan 2, 2009We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

I am doing all this because I have read on the internet that the open source radeon driver does not enable H/w acceleration properly which means that choppy performance while playing HD movies and / or while playing OpenGL games. Not that OpenGL games don't work, they just work very slowly even with Direct Rendering of Mesa drivers. Then there's this thing about Kernel Mode Setting as well which isn't available in the proprietary ATI driver.

Oct 31, 2010I ordered a free Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop CD and followed the instructions(put it in the dvd rom and restarted my laptop). All goes very well up to one point when it's loading, but there's no progress. I left it so for about an hour while I went out to see if it would load, but when I got home the screen was the same(even the loading animation stopped). I have Windows 7 installed and I want to install Ubuntu on another partition.

Apr 7, 2011My screen capture software, shutter and system's default "take screenshot", do not function normal any more. It can only capture the desktop wallpaper, not any other elements on the desktop, nor any other opened windows. It's just like taking an x-ray picture by passing all the other objects/elements/running programs on top of the desktop wallpaper. Any ideas? I am using Fedora 14 64 bit. The screen capture software were working fine, though.

Mar 23, 2010i need to setup a demo desktop environment for ppl to try out a java based gui. i need to put this demo on a VPS server, run a vncserver, and use a web-based vnc viewer for ppl to access to it. what is the best desktop environment for this case, 1. my vps server only has about 200m memory left 2. i need to have java swing set running 3.it doesn't have to be cool, but it needs to be quick. i heard that freeNX is quicker, but i doubt there will be a web-based viewer around. i tried both gnome and xfce4 on my virtual machine and vnc to it, strangely i found out gnome is somehow faster than xfce4 which is supposed to be otherwise.

Jan 17, 2010I have a user that has already used up a demo 24hr trial on my website. At present, I only check the customer id and the IP address to search for duplicates. On the whole this works but it's not foolproof. We now have 1 user from China that is changing their IP address everyday to get access to the free trial. Any options on what to do? I thought of downloading a cookie to their computer that the website could pick up - again not foolproff but most people don't disable cookies. Any other options?
I could ban China temporarily until the user gives up but if they find another proxy to chain then their IP address will be different again.

Oct 8, 2010I can not seem to find a pdf viewer browser plugin other than the actual craprobat plugin from Adobe. The default Ubuntu install comes with a perfectly good open source stand alone pdf viewer, but this means that the browser has to save it to your download directory then run the external viewer, and eventually your download directory is all cluttered up. I would much rather just view the pdf in the browser.Is there no open source browser plugin?
