Ubuntu :: Create Non-open Source Programs To Be Run On A System?
Feb 6, 2011
I know that Linux is open source but there must be ways of creating non-open source programs to be run on a Linux system? Does such a thing exist and/or have a name? Would any source code that has been compiled be unable to be read by anyone properly unless the soruce code was released?

I am looking for an opensource-software that works with debian/ubuntu. I want to count rows from a couple of MySQL-tables on a server and that way keep statistics of changes in those tables. The tables should be read something like every night, and it shows how customers and subscriptions are changing. Today there is about 10 000 rows * a couple of tables, and it would be nice if it is presented in a webpage...

I have an NTFS file system nfs-automounted on our RedHat servers. Users can read and write to the file system no problem, and can create new files, edit them, and delete them to their heart's content. The only issue is that utilities such as "dos2unix" cannot create temporary working files:
$ dos2unix events.0818.dat
dos2unix: converting file events.0818.dat to UNIX format ...
Failed to open output temp file: Operation not permitted
dos2unix: problems converting file events.0818.dat
This isn't limited to "dos2unix"; any other utility that creates a temporary working file gets the same problem. If I copy the file to a local file system like /tmp, it works fine. Here's the kicker: this works fine on Solaris systems. I can take the "dos2unix" utility over to a Solaris system that has that exact same NTFS file system automounted via NFS, and it works. No issues creating temporary working files at all.

I have the following setup code...
I would like to activate 802.1x authentication on the Windows PCs, and have the Linux Box play the role of a 802.1x authenticator (blocking all access to the Internet until the Windows PCs have properly authenticated themselves using the 802.1x protocol, and the Linux Box checks the credentials by interrogating the RADIUS server).
I could theoretically insert a 802.1x-capable switch between the Windows PCs and the Linux Box, but this setup is embedded and the hardware cannot be changed.
Apparently the OpenWRT project solved the problem somehow, so there must be an open-source solution somewhere, but I simply cannot find it. The only links I find are for the Open1X project (http://open1x.sourceforge.net/), but the Docs link is dead.

I'm looking for an open source system that can handle storing lots of images on tag basis, that permits me to find any image related to topics or type or post date. And also permits me to add notes. We have a lot of images and those images should be arranged according to topics in tagging manner as Google Mail do for classifying mails.

I have a friend that want to migrate his server to a open source mail system. Currently, he's using a system using Maildir. So I decided to use qmail since it has support for Maildir and it has pop3 capability. Courier-imap is the one I'll be using for IMAP. My concern is webmail. Can anyone suggest a webmail that will run using Maildir format and has addressbook and calendar feature. I'll be using a single server only. Please exclude Squirrelmail from the list.

The Ext 4 file system of the partition (dev/sdb1) is corrupted. When I seek to repair this using the boot repair tool it is unable to resolve this. I admit that I don't fully understand the problem - except that I'm unable to open and use programs.

Are there any Computer Algebra Systems in the Ubuntu repositories that are GUI (and preferably GTK+) based and open source, as well as capable of graphing (and in 3D)? That being: A complete FOSS competitor to Microsoft Student.

We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

I'm having sporadic issues with the openoffice.org program. Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.

Im trying to install mupen64plus, but to be honest, everything i have installed is from the package manager.I have no idea how to do this through the terminal. But I tried installing the mupen64plus from the package manager, and everytime I open a rom, mupen64plus closes and doesnt load anything....
That version was 1.5, and I downloaded 1.99.3 or whatever it is from the mupen site, but I cant get the sucker to install. There is a install.sh file which I chmod +x too. I then tried, ,/install.sh, make install.

When I go to sites like kde-apps.org or gtk-apps.org i often times find that lots of programs there are available only in source code? Why? Why is it so hard for the developer to compile the package or to make that .deb or .rpm package? I'm sure it's easier for the developer to compile his own program than for a linux user... i don't get this.. why does everything come in source code?

Where do I find the linux-source package and the linux-headers package? Are they on the CD that I can copy to /usr/src (is that the right place...)? Or do I need to download them from the old-releases.ubuntu.com site?
The issue now is that the nVidia installer from their website wants the source code to build the right packages for this machine, however, I do not have the src directory with the source code that it is looking for. Is there some way to give this too it now?
I am running Mythbuntu 7.10

I am currently writing some convenience methods for my terminal in my bash_profile and am sure if what I am writing is "the best way". I figure a good way to verify whether what I'm doing is right or not would be to find some source code of more established programs and see how they do it.My question then is, where can I find this code on my Mac? An example is, with Macports installed, where is the source code that opens the port interactive console when I type nothing but "port" in my shell?(I added Linux in the title even though I am on a Mac because I assume the answer would be the same for both)

I have a problem that I can't seem to figure out. I can easily create a .sh file that will execute a command in Terminal, but as soon as it executes the terminal disappears. How do I get it to stay? My idea is to have the keyboard shortcut "ctrl+alt+del" open a .sh file with the contents "ps ax". Then it would be just like having a task manager; the terminal would open with "ps ax" already executed, and all I would have to do is kill the process number.

I made this thread last night~[URL]... Because my Ubuntu failed, and i have no idea why. I hadnt done anything different or risky.. and Ive no idea what to do. So, It appears Im going to have to do a re-install. Which, I really dont mind too much... (especially with Ubuntu) But It will stink if i *again* lose all my bookmarks , and lose track of all my installed programs. The programs, not as much of an issue as the bookmarks in my browser.. I would like to know, If I can somehow access the HDD from the LiveCD, So that I can create just a simple text list of all programs installed on the hdd? I cannot access my HDD except through the LiveCD So is there a way I can do this? Some kind of simple command I can toss into terminal, and have it output me a text file of all programs installed? or something? I really am totally clueless on how I would be able to save my chromium bookmarks.

When i was in Windows, i had absolutely no problem creating and running basic terminal C++ programs. I came to Ubuntu, and now I've got a big problem: I can't run any program that i make. I have tried making programs in Code::Blocks, CodeLight, MonoDevelop, and NetBeans. All 4 four are free IDE's from the ubuntu installer. I've created 4 programs, 1 on each, and they're all the EXACT same program. When i build it, they build just fine and run. When i release and compile it so it becomes an .exe program, i can't open it. I find the thing, double click, and nothing happens. I rightclick and choose Run, and nothing happens. I made a basic Hello World program, and i couldn't even run that. Is there an extra thing im supposed to install to allow me to run .exe or something?

(I have no doubt this had been asked before, but Googling has turned up numerous results - many of which are written with the assumption that you're a Linux Pro, which I'm certainly not. If there is a more relevant thread already active please point me towards it.)I'm looking for a tool, or console command, to tell certain programs to automatically open on a specific desktop. i.e. Instead of TweetDeck, Thunderbird and Pidgin all appearing on Desktop 1 when I open them up, I want Thunderbird to always live on Desktop 4, TweetDeck to always live on Desktop 3, etc.

my X server restarts and boots me to the log screen when I start programs. I recently took the Nvidia card out of my computer and put in an ATI card. This is of course after uninstalling the Nvidia drivers through the restricted drivers interface. This worked out very well but eventually I went back to Nvidia. I removed the ATI drivers put in the Nvidia card and installed/selected the Nvidia drivers just as I did when I did this the other way previously. However now when I start just about any program the entire X server boots me back to the login screen.
