Fedora Networking :: Trying To Access Restricted Windows Share From Fedora

Dec 27, 2009

I've lasted a lot longer than usual before resorting to asking around, but I've finally gone delightfully mad. I've been trying to access shares based on Windows 7 Ultimate with limited user access on said shares. I've managed to get into my XP machine, another mate's Vista machine and various Linux boxes with no issues, but that's only for shares that are accessible by everyone. The moment I try to get into a share that requires user credentials, I get "Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED".If I try to access restricted shares (be it machine or folder) through Nautilus, I will get a user logon prompt, but it fails. Using smbclient results in just as little success, and now I'm munching through O'Reiley's Samba manual from '99, after realising that I need to basically learn Samba in its entirety to have a hope in hell at getting this to work. The trouble is though, every HOWTO and relevant forum post I get my hands on all seem to concentrate more on the server side of things, and usually servering from a linux box, not the other way around as I'm trying to.

The above Windows 7 machine won't even allow me to view its share contents, whereas the XP machine previously will allow me to browse, but won't allow me to access folders with restricted access. I'm pretty sure there aren't any major issues with the way the Windows 7 machine is setup, as it can be accessed with logon from my Xbox, Ubuntu machine, XP and Vista, with only Fedora having problems getting in as it constantly fails logon. What I'm trying to establish is, if Ubuntu can get in, is there something in my Fedora samba config I'm missing that's preventing me access? My thanks in advance to those of you who've been able to put up with me rambling.

Fedora Networking :: Eth0 Restricted To LAN Only

Jun 21, 2010

I'm guessing this is a r8169 problem. This worked for a while after upgrading to fc13 (from fc12)

I'm not able to get off the local network with eth0. I can though with eth1. Both interfaces are connected to the same switch and have the same network, gateway, and dns server addresses.

The odd part is I am able to ping eth0 from off the LAN and get a reply.

Wireshark capture is attached.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Creating Web Page For Users With Restricted Shell To Change System Pw?

I thought that if we had a web page set up where the user could enter their username, old password, new password and confirmed new password, that this would be the easiest solution.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Terminal At Boot Time / Opted To Install ATI Drivers When Alerted To Restricted Ones By Pop-up?

Jan 1, 2010

I recently installed Fedora - it seems like a nice interface and I want to experience the system before deciding whether I want to keep using it over my ever reliable Crunchbang, which gives me absolutely no grief whatsoever. However, it is nice to use an attractive interface now and again. So, here's my problem - I opted to install the ATI drivers when alerted to the restricted ones by the pop-up. I took note of how to disable them again if there were problems with the display after reboot. There was a problem with the display (black screen) and I can't get the command entered at boot time because the only command line environment I have an option for is GRUB. Grib does not recognize any of the 'aticonfig --initial -f' command that ATI instructed me to use to get things back to normal. How do I do this? I prsume others have been there and will know how to guide me. - getting the graphical interface to display better graphics. I want the eye candy that desktop effects give. I am hoping Fedora won't let me down here because I could simply continue to use Ubuntu which only gives one problem with the window resize delay.

Fedora :: Way To Modify GDM?

Jul 25, 2010

Recently I installed Fedora 13 (GNOME) on my computer, I previously had Ubuntu 9.04.For the most part everything has been painless, here are though some things I need help on.

1. Is there a way to modify GDM? Every time I boot up and go to login, the login manager is very small and doesn't fit the screen.

2. Is there a way to add a shutdown option directly up on the top right panel where you usually log out? It's kind of annoying to have to log out, then shut down instead of just shutting down directly.

3. Because I starting using Linux with Debian based system (Ubuntu), I got used to sudo. Since Fedora uses su, can someone tell me the proper way to use it? Personally I find installing a program through the terminal faster than Add/Remove.

4. This is my biggest grip upon moving over to F13. For some reason certain programs don't display properly after launching them. Example, I installed OpenArena, a first person shooter, and launched it to play it, however, everything looks distorted. It's slanted diagonally. I think it may have something to do with the nouveau drivers that, if I remember right, are installed by default on F13.

I attached a screenshot of how Blender looks on launching, it's the exact same problem in OpenArena. Is there a way I can modify nouveau's settings or uninstall it all together? And/or tips on this issue?

Fedora Hardware :: Modify Function Keys 'fn'

Nov 11, 2010

Fedora 14
xfce
HP Mini 210

I have just bought a HP Min and installed xfce Fedora 14.

However, I would like to modify the way the function keys are pressed. Currently I have to press the 'fn' key down and then press a function key.

The function keys also have a second action. For example, Brightness up and down, volume control, play, fast forward, mute, wifi, etc.

However, those secondary actions only requires a single click.

As I use my HP for doing a lot of programming using emacs. I need the function keys for compiling, book marking, cleaning, uncommenting, etc. Is slows me down having to click on an extra 'fn' key.

I am wondering if it is possible to change the actual function keys to be a single click instead of having to click on the 'fn' all the time. And change the secondary action volumen, brightness, etc, to using the 'fn'?

Fedora :: Subject - Modify Only Parameters In Kernel Config

Aug 28, 2009

I want to start to play with "homemade" kernels. (To get some experiences in this subject). I want to do this step-by-step. I have already read a lot about this. I have a Fedora 10 running. So I want to start with this. I have read that there is a "special" way to create a kernel for Fedora. [URL] OK. I understand this +/-. When you build a new kernel with an other version number, you have to rebuild all the modules with this new kernelversion, and you have to install these also.

But : I want to start with modify only some parameters in my kernel config. Do I need to rebuild and re-install the modules also? Will it not be enough to rebuild only the kernel? (vmlinuz) Where can I find some information about the options I can disable in my kernel to speedup my system? (boot process ed). I want to suppress the loading of unneeded modules. I want to understand the options in menuconfig (and there are a lot of options ! ! )

Fedora Servers :: Can't Access Or Modify File Unless Directory Mode Is 777 And Files Are 666

Nov 8, 2010

I have a multi user system for my roommates and myself that has separate folders for each of us. I've got user authentication working with samba, but unless I set every file and folder readable/writeable by all users, I can't browse it or edit the files. This isn't ideal as the shares are open to other users access, so I'm hoping there's a way to keep folders at 750 and files at 660 while allowing samba users to browse, delete and edit. Also, the samba share is actually a mounted NFS share from another server. Both the NFS server and the Samba server have the same users/uid's. When a file is created from a Windows host via the Samba client, the NFS server's permissions do show that the correct user owns the files, but since the files aren't mode 666 but 640 I can't edit or delete the file.

Fedora Networking :: Modify The Script To Allow Non-root Users Similar Features?

Mar 28, 2011

I spent some time programming a useful script which presents the user with a UI of all the samba/W2K8 servers and shares on the domain and they check off the shares and the script maps them. The script can only be run as root because mount doesn't allow users to execute. I was asked to modify the script to allow non-root users similar features. I was able to get this working by running the commands:

Code:
# chmod +s /sbin/mount.cifs
# chmod +s /sbin/umount.cifs

Can someone please explain to me what the 's' option means? The man pages only go as far as to say that it allows for setting suid but I don't really know understand that means or what the implications are by doing this. In a perfect world I would like to create a security group and add users into that group and then grant that group permission to run mount.cifs/umount.cifs rather than making such a drastic global change to a core binary. how I might go about granting members of a group permission to run hand-selected commands like mount.cifs?

Post added at 07:07 PM Previous post was at 04:40 PM Ok, I read up on the /etc/sudoers man page and I think I have a more elegant solution to this problem of user mountable samba shares. I restored my mount.cifs back (chmod -s /sbin/mount.cifs) and I used visudo to grant the access.

Code:
%smbusers ALL=NOPASSWD:NOEXEC:/sbin/mount.cifs,/sbin/umount.cifs
This allows any users in the smbusers group to run mount.cifs/umount.cifs with sudo but without being prompted for a password.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Cannot Modify Grub Menu File - Need To Change Boot Order

Mar 3, 2009

I recently installed a 64-bit version of centOS 5 alongside a 32-bit version, which I use. Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?
