I've just installed fc 13 on my laptop. It's got windows and mepis linux on here also. the installer for fc only found windows and I was wondering if there's a way to modify the graphical grub screen to contain mepis linux or if i have to disable it and use a standard text screen for grub.
View 1 Repliessince i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file
I have 10.04 installed on my 320 gig. SATA hdd and i have an 80 gig IDE that I want to install Mepis on but i do not want to upset my boot order. Can I install the Mepis and later update grub so as to have Ubuntu as my default?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a 64-bit version of centOS 5 alongside a 32-bit version, which I use. Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter a recent "yum update", my laptop screen locks up during graphical boot. I use rhgb on the kernel line. The container on the screen fills up with charge and then the screen locks. I have to use the power button to reboot. If I press ESC when the boot splash appears (i.e., boot in text mode), it works.
If I set plymouth to "details" mode using
$ plymouth-set-default-theme details --rebuild-initrd
It boots up correctly. This is equivalent to a text boot screen. I doubt whether it is a video driver problem. I reinstalled the nvidia driver and it is working. I also reinstalled plymouth and plymouth-themes-*.
I have downloaded ubuntu 10.10 64bit and have also burned it to good disk at 4x speed. when i boot it from cd everything goes simple and fine till it comes to a mixed orange colour screen and then nothing goes further, it just halts there with this full blank screen. so i have to do a hard shutdown. then i tried wubi.it went good. after rebooting it asks for installation options. there are five of them. in the normal mode the same thing gets repeated again. but in safe graphics mode ubuntu gets installed but few errors are shown after installation. there is no graphical screen and only this text screen comes again and again.

I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)
so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)
completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27

Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen....nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete....system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've previously had a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu machine that was working fine. Fast forward, I'm not able to boot into Vista at all and decide to reformat, return to factory settings after which I'll simply reinstall Ubuntu to get my functioning dual-boot back. I reformat the drive, everything seems to work fine and when I reboot I'm met by the GRUB screen rather then the Vista bootloader screen I expected. I select the Vista option and rather than starting to boot, seeing the Windows splash and then breaking (as it's been doing for a few weeks leading up to my decision to reformat), I'm promptly given a message that it can't find the disk 5252-ACFA (that Vista was previously on). After further inspection, my Ubuntu partition is still in tact and untouched, so I think the 'reformat' simply reformatted the Vista partition not the entire HD as I'd wanted. How do I modify GRUB to point to the new correct Vista boot?

My Slackware boots using the huge kernel. I am not using LILO; I am using GRUB from the extras directory on the DVD. I followed the tutorial @ [URL] up to the point where it discusses modifying LILO. My /boot/grub/menu.lst reads, in part:

root (hd0,6)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda7 ro vga=normal

This boots the huge kernel. What changes must I make to the above menu.lst entry to boot using the generic kernel?
Tried upgrading from 8.04 lts to 10.04 and it wouldn't work b/c of too many mods to my 8.04 system? So I tried a fresh install per usb stick. System kept locking up during install, as well as when I run it from the usb, I've since learned. graphics card? I can't log into windows either per the grub loading please wait error 15. I've googled & searched the forums & everything I've tried doesn't work, there were some possible solutions that I don't understand how to do. can't get to a terminal to check or modify anything. Hitting "e" at the boot menu does nothing. I don't know how to do anything from here! Compaq Presario SR5350, 2GB RAM, Dual Core Proc 2150MHz. Dual boot w/Vista, HDD is partitioned separately with Root, Home & swap. Also, sda5 or / has been formatted to ext4, still using grub 1.5.

As a result, since Ubuntu windows now relies heavily on the screen size parameters, everything goes "out of the monitor": browser window, background image, etc In System -> Display, I see it's set as an 11'' monitor...do you know how I can modify this value to be 10'' ? There used to be an Xorg.conf that one could edit to permanently modify these values but now it's nowhere to be found
View 5 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu onto my computer, I downloaded all of the major appearance applications like Tweak. Using Tweak, I modified the login screen to have a custom wallpaper and no sound to play when I login, and it worked perfectly. When I re-installed Ubuntu after that first time (I re-installed it because I totally screwed with the GUI) and every time after that, I go to use Tweak and it still allows me the option to modie login screen.However, after I make the modifications and restart the GUI, the login screen background is just a blank purple wallpaper and the login sound still plays when I login (both are things I didn't select). I open up Tweak and the modifications I made are still there, but they don't apply. What's up?

What upseting us is the history command function, we use an array to store the history commands, and print the when receiving the up and down arrow buttons. The problem is we cannot modify the history command already printed on the terminal, we even cannot move the cursur, let alone modifying the command.
early tl;dr: The fancy grub breaks on my wubi 10.04 install, can I force it to use the old grub?
When I rebuild grub.cfg (last time was yesterday for kernel update to .37), and shut down / reboot, grub breaks because it can't 'loadfont' and a few other errors which are related to the 'graphical' grub boot menu.
To fix this I have to boot into a live CD (also Ubuntu 10.04) and run the following:

I know how to fix it but is there a way to skip having to do this on upgrades
(If I edit the grub.cfg before shutting down then this doesn't happen, obviously, but sometimes I forget and this is the result. I'd rather stop the problem at it's source than fight against the updater).
Recently my Ubuntu has started dropping to bash shell instead of starting the graphical login. It first asks me login name and password(in the shell) then gives me a command line. I can then type startx to start it. It seems to start alright but that is not how it is supposed to work.
Doed anyone know how I can get it back to default behavior?
I would like to modify the splash screen that you see when booting up Xubuntu 10.10. I want something light. What dimesions should I have it at like 800X600 1280X768 and etc. I will be using this on many different resolutions. Also where does the splash reside on this build?

Now that the computer boot up normally but when it reaches the login screen it just emit a sound in the pc's speaker,he login screen flickers and is showed another login screen again and again and again (it's automatic). I can logon using the option single-user mode in the grub options, any idead on how can I fix it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter applying the latest round of updates last night, I turned on my laptop this AM (ATI X1300 Mobility graphics running the default drivers), selected the latest kernel in GRUB, and waited to log in....only problem is that instead of seeing a normal loading screen (Blue with Fedora icon filling in), I instead get a black screen mostly covered in multicolored rectangles. I don't believe there was a graphics driver update, so I'm rather confused as to what went wrong/how to procede. I can still boot using a previous kernel.
