I want to start to play with "homemade" kernels. (To get some experiences in this subject). I want to do this step-by-step. I have already read a lot about this. I have a Fedora 10 running. So I want to start with this. I have read that there is a "special" way to create a kernel for Fedora. [URL] OK. I understand this +/-. When you build a new kernel with an other version number, you have to rebuild all the modules with this new kernelversion, and you have to install these also.
But : I want to start with modify only some parameters in my kernel config. Do I need to rebuild and re-install the modules also? Will it not be enough to rebuild only the kernel? (vmlinuz) Where can I find some information about the options I can disable in my kernel to speedup my system? (boot process ed). I want to suppress the loading of unneeded modules. I want to understand the options in menuconfig (and there are a lot of options ! ! )

Now as to my reason for this question:
In preparing for an Informix installation, I may need to change some kernel parameters. I could follow the advice of G�rard BIGOT from a couple of years ago at this URL. However, messing with the kernel this way, by directly editing /etc/sysctl.conf, is a bit scary. I have already backed up the current one and started editing according the Informix machine notes. However, I have commented out my new settings. [:Chicken]
The scariest aspect of this is that the notes recommend settings to kernel parameters that I do not find in /proc/sys/kernel. for example, it recommends setting SHMMIN to 1 but when I can /proc/sys.kernel/shmmin, there is no such file. (I did find shmmax.) Similarly for the very logical shmseg (max number of shared memory segments) - not found. I am afraid to add these into sysctl.conf if the equivalent pseudo-files don't exist.
Additional question: Where [on-line] do I find all kernel parameters documented? This is so that I am more certain of what I am doing instead of relying on my memory. For example, I don't recall the names of the parameters that control Kernel-Asynchronous I/O (KAIO) events.
how to create or modify Ff themes for Linux. From what i gather you just have to edit CSS or HTML files.I have searched Mozilla and they have next to nothing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI updated my laptop from F12 to F14 via preupgrade. After doing so, the standard mouse theme was active. So I installed the one I like again and set it as mouse theme. For some reason it is now a mixture of the one I installed and the standard theme. If I open a place in nautilus the displayed symbol is the right one while waiting, if I open something in control center I get the standard icon. Same problem with drag and drop, I always get the hand from the standard theme. I also tried the former standard theme Bluecurve and it was the same problem.Can anyone tell me what goes wrong with the theme? What has changed in F14, that the older themes won't work?

Any time I try to install a theme I get an error that it's "appears to not be a valid theme" When I first click the install button and navigate to my theme packages, I don't see the [dot] theme file, which is a red-flag. I change to "All files" and I tend to see an "index.theme". Is this the correct file?

Pulse audio is for default, so I check Mi card Hd Nvidia and make the sound louder, but wend I shut down the PC and star up again, the settings are Low again. So, for instance, if the command is normally "/usr/bin/foo something" I want to be able to add the "something" parameter dynamically after clicking the launcher but before the application launches. View 2 Replies View Relatedi have an hp pavilion dv7 and am using f13 64bit. my laptop has a built in woofer underneath that i have never been able to get to work. after the latest kernel update today my laptop now has woofer sound. there must be some new support for my laptops audio card. the problem is that it is a little overbearing. how can i a) disable this feature b) tweak the parameters like crossover frequency or gain? edit: i checked the changelog for 2.6.34 and couldn't find any info on any new audio support features.
View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed Fedora 13 (GNOME) on my computer, I previously had Ubuntu 9.04.For the most part everything has been painless, here are though some things I need help on.
1. Is there a way to modify GDM? Every time I boot up and go to login, the login manager is very small and doesn't fit the screen.
2. Is there a way to add a shutdown option directly up on the top right panel where you usually log out? It's kind of annoying to have to log out, then shut down instead of just shutting down directly.
3. Because I starting using Linux with Debian based system (Ubuntu), I got used to sudo. Since Fedora uses su, can someone tell me the proper way to use it? Personally I find installing a program through the terminal faster than Add/Remove.
4. This is my biggest grip upon moving over to F13. For some reason certain programs don't display properly after launching them. Example, I installed OpenArena, a first person shooter, and launched it to play it, however, everything looks distorted. It's slanted diagonally. I think it may have something to do with the nouveau drivers that, if I remember right, are installed by default on F13.
I attached a screenshot of how Blender looks on launching, it's the exact same problem in OpenArena. Is there a way I can modify nouveau's settings or uninstall it all together? And/or tips on this issue?

I have installed Fedora 14 with gnome. My problem is that in some applications the archive menu doesn't appears. Some of this applications are geany, tux commander, filezilla ... nevertheless in other applicationas like firefox, chrome, vlc ... the menu appears.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, from time to time on login, as my normal theme starts to load, it changes to some sort of silver theme (a very basic one), and I am unable to change it over to any other theme. Checking the theme being used, it still says my desired one is set, but it is not. Also, no matter what theme I change it to, that basic silver theme is the one being used. This includes a default icon theme, not the one I prefer.
The only option that seems to fix things is a restart, and the hope that on this login it won't mess up like before.I am using Natty, from a fresh install, with Ubuntu Classic as my desktop, and have reinstalled things more than once to try and fix a few of the Natty-related issues, but this one keeps coming back.

to /etc/profile all QT5 apps should use the gtk theme but for some reason this doesn't seem to work.
Adding -style=gtk to the launcher options works but I want to change the theme setting for all QT5 apps.

I have just bought a HP Min and installed xfce Fedora 14.
However, I would like to modify the way the function keys are pressed. Currently I have to press the 'fn' key down and then press a function key.
The function keys also have a second action. For example, Brightness up and down, volume control, play, fast forward, mute, wifi, etc.
However, those secondary actions only requires a single click.
As I use my HP for doing a lot of programming using emacs. I need the function keys for compiling, book marking, cleaning, uncommenting, etc. Is slows me down having to click on an extra 'fn' key.
I am wondering if it is possible to change the actual function keys to be a single click instead of having to click on the 'fn' all the time. And change the secondary action volumen, brightness, etc, to using the 'fn'?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI enjoy using vim from lxterminal with the black background, as well as awesome with its dark theme. I configured xfe manually to be darkish, and i use darklooks as a GTK theme to suit it as well. I could say all my desktop looks pretty dark, which my eyes thank me for. I also use redshift.But problems come along when surfing the web. Most web pages (including this one) have very bright styles. They are not the problem themselves, but switching from my windows hurts my eyes since it's a quick change to a much brighter screen.What would you do, either:
1. Use everything with a brighter background and putting the screen brightness a bit lower. (changing the GTK theme to clearlooks, using lxterminal with a white background, etc.)
2. Use some color theme with uzbl so that pages would look much darker. (like when you set manually the text and background colors in Firefox/Iceweasel)
I would myself go with the second one if most pages wouldn't look that bad when modified that way. For example, many pages use non-transparent images with white backgrounds on white pages, so if you change the background to black not only it looks horrible but it too is a mess.
