Struggling to find right place to post, or for FAQs, or anything, because reading web browser is such a strain: can use Firefox v. happily in MS Windows, but, new to Linux and Fedora (14), I can't physically SEE where to start modifying appearance of either desktop or browser, which seem minute. I'm sure there's a really simple route if someone can just start me off.

Fedora 12 gcc 4.4.1 I am doing some programming, and my program gave me a stack dump. However, there is no core file for me to examine.

I'm running Hardy 8.04.. Once in a while when I boot up my system, all of my fonts are different - everything is very large. If I go into the screen resolution, I have no choices higher than 800x600. If I restart the system, there is a good chance that the screen resolution will go back to normal. what I can do to fix it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix on my girlfriend's computer, and everything went fine except the computer *thinks* it's got an 11'' monitor when it's actually something like 10.2". As a result, since Ubuntu windows now relies heavily on the screen size parameters, everything goes "out of the monitor": browser window, background image, etc In System -> Display, I see it's set as an 11'' monitor...do you know how I can modify this value to be 10'' ? There used to be an Xorg.conf that one could edit to permanently modify these values but now it's nowhere to be found
View 5 Replies View RelatedHow do you increase the text size in the virtual terminal (the one you get to when you press ctrl+alt F1-6)? My monitor is pretty old and kind of small, so I need the bigger text size to really be able to use it at all. I tried to find the answer in google, but I couldn't find the answer. I found answers for suse and ubuntu and tried to use those. They said to edit part of the boot loader config file, but I couldn't find a similar line in the grub.conf file. And I don't want to play with it without knowing what I'm doing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedA thread on text size in console got sidetracked to discussing fbterm. In an effort to not (further) hijack that thread, I've started this one.[URL].. Anyway, I was asked how I got ibus-fbterm working. I only really got it working in ArchLinux, not Fedora, but I suspect if someone works enough at it, they can get it working in Fedora as well. I do a minimal installation, installing X and fluxbox or openbox. One also needs to have framebuffer working--if you have nomodeset in grub, due to, for example, using an NVidia driver, this won't work. You will have a /dev/fb0. In Arch, this is owned by root:video. When installing fbterm, there's a message that one should add themselves to the video group in order take advantage of this.
I used it with ibus-anthy. First, I made sure that that worked properly in X. I then installed fbterm and ibus-fbterm. So, to get it working, first be sure that ibus and your desired input method is working in X. Then, you have to have rights to /dev/fb0--in Arch, this was easy, making myself a member of the video group, not sure about the best way to do it in Fedora. As a temporary experiment, I just did a chmod 777 on it, which is obviously not the best solution.
Now in console, start ibus
ibus-daemon --xim
Before running fbterm, run the command
setcap 'cap_sys_tty_config+ep' /path/to/fbterm
as root or with root privilege. In Arch, the setcap command was there, in Fedora, I had to install it. I'm afraid I forget what program provided it, I had to use yum provides */setcap Then call ibus-fbterm with ibus-fbterm-launch You'll see that your console looks slightly different. Now, if it works, you should be able to hit ctl+space and then input the language of your choice (in my case Japanese.) In Fedora, it didn't work. I would hit shift space and enter characters, but nothing happened.
In Arch, it was a bit better--I'd hit ctl+space and enter something. Then, when I hit enter, I would see the results of what I'd typed. I couldn't edit it until I'd left input mode by hitting ctl+space again. That is, after hitting enter, I'd see the result of what I typed, but couldn't backspace.or otherwise go back. What it would do is, when I was trying to select kanji, by hitting the space bar after t yping the phonetic, is, after the second or third hit of the space bar, it would show the kanji choices and I could pick one.
I have 24" dual monitors with 1920x1080 resolution on both of them. Consequently the text appears so small. I use the following text-intensive applications frequently:
Web browser (Google Chrome)
IDE (Komodo)
Terminal (Gnome Terminal)
Email (Thunderbird)
I can configure text size on IDE, Terminal and Email. But for Chrome, it is not a good idea to set proportional font size because often one wants to see the entire (not just proportional fonts) site to be zoomed. So I am asking: Is it possible to increase DPI in Ubuntu (much like on Windows) so as to increase the text size across all apps? OR Is it possible to set permanent 'zoom' in Google Chrome, using a third-party extension maybe?
I have a ubuntu linux working in TEXT mode. I would like the change the font size (or if possible, get my terminal with inconsolata font). How can i do it?
PS: i don't have a GUI or X Windows running.

I'm new to fedora, and pretty new to Linux. I recently installed fedora and had to troubleshoot most problems with the drivers myself, before installing the system I searched for all the drivers in my computer so I could do it easily. After getting everything working in proper conditions, IE, wireless, and sound worked wonderfully, I was able to hear, and connect to aMSN and my wireless network. I didn't notice any problems until I actually started firefox to browse the web.
It couldn't connect to a host, or resolve it. It wouldn't work when it was wired, and wouldn't work wireless. I reinstalled it to see if it would work without me messing with anything and just connecting through ethernet, and still it didn't work, same problem. I wouldn't ask if I could find a site that had the same problem but I've been searching for about 2 hours. I'd like to use Fedora asap, and get rid of Ubuntu.
I installed Fedora 15/Gnome 3 because I liked the Universal Access Settings widget for controlling the appearance of my living room computer attached to my TV. It should (when it becomes more stable) make it easy to zoom in on the screen when I'm on the couch. There is also a Large Text setting that allows me to toggle between normal text size and perhaps 125% text size.
I'd like to set that value to about 200%, but don't see how to do it. dconf-editor didn't seem to have a way. gnome-tweak-tool has a way to make all fonts bigger or smaller but I want to easily switch between normal text size when I'm sitting close and large text from the UAS. Screwing around with gnome-tweak-tool would require me to be up-close. It looks like UAS is controlled by /usr/share/gnome-control-center/ui/uap.ui, but it is a wickedly complex xml file & I don't know what to edit. Is there a per user way to change the behavior?

I can manually ping Stanford ok,
Add/remove software within fed. works ok.
I can type in 192.168.0.1 & get the page for my router
The only thing I did between working & not working was to install
Nvidia Cuda driver for my GTX275
My guess is something in the firewall got tweaked. but I've compared it to 2 working boxes & nothing jumps out at me.
I downloaded an .emerald + GDK theme off gnome-look.org and absolutely love it so far. The only thing I do not like about it is the fact that it changes the background color of all webpage text boxes to black, which sorta ruins a lot of sites. where I can modify just that little bit? the webpage text box color? I'd like to keep the theme and just set the text boxes back to normal. Using Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop Edition.

I just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10, and one of the first things I did was to find a nice desktop theme. I tried several from gnome-look.org and eventually settled on one called "the days of grace"
Anyway, somewhere along the way, while trying out themes, I used a script provided by a theme author which installed the theme automatically, which had undesirable results. I don't remember the theme that did this, so I'll just call it theme x. The theme x script somehow made firefox use theme x instead of the default firefox "tango" theme, and now the tango theme is not available, because the theme x theme supersedes it.
The theme x does not show up in ubuntu's appearance preferences, but somehow it looks to be linked to the theme I chose, "the days of grace." I can switch to a default ubuntu theme (Ambiance, Radiance, etc.) and I have my firefox tango theme back.
Does anyone know how I can delete this theme x theme, and get back the tango firefox theme?

After installing Fedora 14, I tried upgrading my browser Firefox from 3.6.17 (which came by default) to Firefox 4.0. I googled and got the procedure for upgrading tirefox. from this link [URL]. I followed the exact steps and while I tried to install I get the following error. I tried enough to get rid of this problem but all attempts in vain.

I am trying to change my browser from Mozilla firefox to seamonkey. Im pretty sure I downloaded it but cant find it anywhere on the computer. My reason for changing to seamonkey is I play a game called yoville and I cant get in on this computer it just stops at 75% activating player. I have adobe 10 and thinking maybe I need to switch to adobe 9 but dont know how to do this either.
