General :: Red Hat 5 - Login - Asking Me For A User Name At The Terminal

Oct 28, 2010

I am using red hat 5. It is asking me for a user name at the terminal. I do not understand what it is asking of me. A user name was never established during installation of the program. it did ask for a root password during installation which i provided. At the terminal i did try typing "root" for the log in and the actual root password for the password. It gave me administrative access.

However, i don't know the correct command that will take me to the desktop. For windows i simply typed in win or exit to go to the main windows desktop. Linux is foreign to me... can anyone help? I would be greatful for the advice. I am a windows junky from way back.

I recently set up a family computer for a friend, and now his son is "experimenting" with the terminal (randomly entering commands). since he could accidentally do something bad, I am supposed to prevent him from using terminals, but only as hi user. I tried vlock and away, but with vlock it says 'this terminal is not a virtual console', and away can't seem to lock all consoles.

Fedora Installation :: F13 To F14 No Shell At Login / After Upgrading Cant Login On User?

Jun 3, 2011

yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.

At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console
username: Name
password:
last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied

i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)

I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?

Fedora :: Terminal Comes Up As Csh Not Bash

Apr 20, 2011

I wanted to change my $PATH and my prompt, had some trouble with setting and exporting the variables and found that the shell was csh instead of the bash which I expected. I worked around it by creating a .cshrc which calls bash but don't know what caused the change. I've got as far as seeing that the gnome-terminal command kicks it all off from the Applications>System Tools menu but what happens between there and the terminal popping up?

Fedora :: Bash Cannot Set Terminal Process Group

Urgent: on reboot, the Fedora 11 lower bars reach about 70-80%, then I get the message:

Just in case this is relevant, yesterday I spent several hours attempting (and failing) to build IcedTea in order to run a Java web service that required it. After the failure occurred, I exited Linux and went to Windows Vista to run the web service, and found that Vista cannot support 64-bit Firefox, so I rebooted to Linux, and ran make clean on the Iced Tea installation, which balked because a stamps directory could not be deleted because it was not empty; I followed this by make distclean which made the same complaint. So I manually deleted the files in the stamps subdirectory, ran make distclean "cleanly", and then rebooted to reach my current very unsatisfactory state.

Fedora :: Run (not Run In Terminal) Bash Script With Sudo In It?

Jul 6, 2010

I have written a tiny script which switches between 2 CPU frequency throttling governors. Now I need to assign it to a shorcut key though "Preferences->Keyboard Shortcuts".

Here is the script:

Code:

#!/bin/bash
if [ `cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor` = 'ondemand' ]
then

[code]....

As you can see this script involves sudo. I know that usually running commands with sudo requires "Run in Terminal" option for a shortcut, but in "Keyboard Shortcuts->Add" there is no option to run command in terminal. When I double click on the script and choose "Run in Terminal", then it functions as it should. How can I make this script execute by doing "Run" and not "Run in Termnal"?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Login - Error "no Profile For The User Can Be Found And It Couldnt Create Per-user Gnome Configuration Directory"

Aug 8, 2010

I have a network set up that has been working for around a year with no problems but has now developed a login problem. The system was set up with a main server with all users on it and another PC located elsewhere that people could log onto using there personal login and password that then gained access to the account on the main server. This remote PC has now got the problem. When you try to log onto an account it comes up with the message "your session has lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean there is a installation problem or that you are out of disk space."

Error message says that no profile for the user can be found and it couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory. I can log on as root onto the remote PC as it is obviously a local account but all the account on the main server are not accessible. From the root account I can see that the connection to the server is OK and I can actually log into the accounts on the server using the failsafe session so the physical network is OK.

I never built or designed this set up and to be honest I normally work with windows so its all a bit strange to me. Both PC's run Centos 5. I have checked the messages log and there doesnt seem to be any indication of a problem. Just that it stopped connecting from the remote PC. The accounts are all active on the main server itself and have no problems being accessed.

Ubuntu :: Bash Broken, Lost Functionality In Terminal (gnome-terminal)?

Dec 10, 2010

Linux-goers. I did some research on this, but I am still fairly new to Linux. In Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick), I accidentally overwrote my "/bin/bash" file. Dude, using "sudo" with a small typo can work disasters. Bash is now broken in the Terminal (gnome-terminal). Terminal itself still works fine, technically, but bash is still hosed/broken. Here is what I did to try to fix it: Booted from Ubuntu 10.10 live CD. Mounted my Ubuntu partition and manually copied the good/fresh "bash" file onto my hard drive. Verified copy was successful. Didn't help, as you see. Reinstalled "gnome-terminal" using synaptic package manager. Tried to reinstall bash via synaptic, it failed with error, "E: /var/cache/apt/archives/bash_4.1-2ubuntu4_i386.deb: subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2"

In Terminal, all basic commands work as far as I can tell. ("ls", "pwd", navigation, etc.) Here are some problems:My "username@computername" does not display in the prompt; only the $ sign. Bash keyboard shortcuts such as uparrow and tab do not work. Instead, each inserts a key code. I can't even move the cursor left/right. Aliases (a function of bash and .bashrc) are broken, of course. My sanity level decreases when I use Terminal now. For what it's worth, even with "sudo" I get a "permission denied" error when trying to run Google Chrome! I read something about a ".bashrc" file being a possible problem, but I don't know how to make it work, or the file's proper locations in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there something I can do with a "make" or "apt-get install" command or something?? Could this simply be a permissions problem? Is the link to "/bin/bash", "/bin/sh", or a ".bashrc" file broken? Guide me, oh Linux gurus.

P.S. I always wondered what exactly bash was and how it was different from the basic terminal. LoL, this is an excellent way to demonstrate the difference, and I WANT IT BACK!

Fedora :: Opening Gnome-terminal - To Be Performed Only At Login

Jan 17, 2011

I have a 'special script' in my .bashrc file, which I want to be performed only at Login. When I open a terminal (through a gnome launcher <gnome-terminal> as the command) it unfortunately sources .bashrc.

Hence the opening of the terminal runs the 'special script' again.

How can I instruct .bashrc not to do something except when and only when I am logging in? I found a segment of code which is supposed to do what I want but I am not sure of how it works.

Code:

Will this work to put my 'special script' in to ensure that it only runs when it is a login script and not when it is a simple launcher terminal opening?

Fedora :: Cannot Login To KDE As Specific User

Jul 17, 2010

I have a very peculiar issue - I can't log in to KDE as one particular user (andrew, which is my regular account) though all other users including root, mythtv & other family members can log in without any problem. When I try to login as andrew the X server appears to crash as the screen goes blank and I have to press Ctrl+Alt+BkSp to get back to the KDM login screen. The proximate cause seems to have been updating KDE to 4.4.5 using yum - I did this logged in as andrew in a terminal session using su - root, and the black screen problem arose next time I tried to log in.

I can log in OK as andrew using a different desktop manager e.g. Sugar. I am using radeonhd graphics driver; if I change to "vesa" in xorg.conf I can log in OK. If I change the home directory for andrew to that of another test user and change the file ownerships, I can log in OK. Therefore the problem must lie in a config file(s) somewhere in the andrew home directory tree, which is specific to KDE and also radeonhd. I have checked in all the obvious (and unobvious) places but can't find anything. There are no relevant SELinux errors or entries in syslog or Xorg.0.log. The .xsession-errors file from a failed login attempt is here [URL] it isn't significantly different from a normal one, and as the entries are not time-stamped I am not sure which ones arise during the login and which when I restart the X server. I am running F13 (kernel 2.6.33.6-147.fc13.x86_64) without any other significant issues.

Fedora :: Cannot Login Other Than Root User

Jun 17, 2011

Well I did something pretty stupid and now I can't log in with my user other than the root user. Basically, I wanted to change my username and so I when to the admin > user & accounts - and selected the account I wanted to change. Anyway I did that and then logged out. Since then all I get when I reseted is a spinning mouse ball and a black screen. I can get into the shell prompt - but I'm not sure how I'd go about fixing this issue I created. At the moment I'm logged in the shell with root, and if I type 'id' I can see my old username, but I think the links behind it are broken.
