I installed xfce fedora 15, some apps can't start or take a long time to start, like catalyst control center (sometime start, sometime no) , ibus (take 3-5s delay), crossover games register (can't start)..
View 4 RepliesJust upgraded to Fedora 15 this afternoon, and for the most part there weren't any serious issues with it (except for rpmfusion lagging on a F15 yum repo). I installed the XFCE spin, and a lot of GNOME-specific apps don't respect my GTK+ theme at all. Screenshot: [URL]... On the left are two "XFCE" apps (Mousepad and Task Manager), on the right are two GNOME apps (gedit and the NetworkManager "Connection Information" window). Is there an easy way to fix this? I have a custom Murrine theme set, but the problem is still there using the built-in themes such as Glossy too.

1) When i login to my DE (LXDE) i want to have several applications start automaticly.. Status: Done.
2) Now, i want them to be started on other displays/desktop, the virtual desktop ones, those you access with ctrl+alt+arrowkey. Status: requesting
I had figured that there's an option to those applications i'd like to be started, display=.However, starting up these apps with the display argument, causes graphic errors on LXPanel and causes an error, rather than to be display on current desktop.

I gave it 6 months, "Plasma" is still as disappointing as it was on day 1 :-( , even more so on SuSE 11.3, but I love the KDE apps. Any suggestions on a lightweight window manager (XFCE or Icewm) Don't care about effects, I like dark and minimalistic where I can define colours, window size and placement, before I rototill this installation.
Plasma has too many irritating features that I cant turn off, just too much like Windoze

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis morning I did a minimal install of Debian to test out xfce and lxde, purely out of curiosity.I tried LXDE first. For various reasons I wasn't entirely pleased, so I removed it and installed xfce4 in a vanilla openbox session. Upon reboot, I was greeted with the CLI. I generated a new xorg.conf file to see if the transition to xfce had altered it, but was greeted with the CLI again after another reboot. I manually started X with 'startx' and noted that the xfce session manager was installed. The xdm session manager, however, was not.Installing xdm fixed the problem, kind of. I am now greeted with an xdm login screen rather than an xfce session login screen. What can I do to have xfce-session be my default login screen?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that are a few applications (non part of the kde apps) that do not launch with alt + f2 (command name). Instead I have to use konsole first and write the command name, then the apps appears successfully.
The same problem I have of course with the same apps if I make a desktop shorcut. These apps never show up! Thus I would like to ask you what should I do to make these shortcuts and alt+f2 launches to work.
Is it possible to have applications open on one of my other desktops instead of the main? Suppose I wanted to have a certain database-excel type or word document open everytime, or other programs that I need open but not cluttering my main desktop, can I do it?

When I log into an Xfce session, the splash screen indicates the "starting window manager" step with a busy cursor for about 10 seconds or more. Mind you this is a 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo machine.I have tried logging out, mv-ing ~/.config/xfce4 from a tty console, and logging back in, but the problem persists.I am running Xfce 4.6.1.3 from squeeze.

I need to start vboxwebsrv and x11vnc on startup with a specific username.I tried entering the commands in rc.local as:/bin/su -c "/x11vnc -forever -usepw -httpdir /usr/share/vnc-java/ -httpport 5800" user1/bin/su -c "/usr/bin/vboxwebsrv -b" user2.But this does not start the app on startup.

One of the first things I do when starting Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is to open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T) with three tabs in it (ctrl-shift-T, ctrl-shift-T), one with irssi, one with ipython and one extra with just the commandline. Then I set the titles (F2) of the first two respectively to "irssi" and "ipython".Is there some way to write a script that automatically does all this? Or maybe save this configuration in a profile setting or something?

I have headless debian as a server which i use over tightvnc server running on it. Vnc works fine but I can't for example run sudo mousepad or any other gui app from terminal, it says something about not having the rights to open it as root. I understand this has something to do with security, but my computers are behind nat so the vnc server can only be connected inside my lan so i don't mind.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI use 2 monitors under Ubuntu 9.10, but I have them set up in a unique way. The primary (CRT) faces me on my desk, but the other (widescreen LCD) is turned away from me, because I use it only to watch movies from my couch. My video card is an Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+, using the proprietary Nvidia driver package, with Xinerama turned on, so the desktop extends across both displays. Given that setup, is there any way to control which display applications open upon? Several apps have started opening on one display or the other, seemingly at random. Further, some apps start on the primary display, but open their subwindows on the secondary display. It's very annoying, because I can't see the second screen, so I can't drag the windows back to the primary desktop.
I would also like to have VLC Media Player (or any other app) always open on the secondary screen, on purpose. I almost never watch movies sitting at my desk, but rather from the couch. I placed a VLC launcher icon on the secondary screen, but when started it opens on the primary display. (If you're wondering how I can click on anything from my couch, I have a wireless mouse there in addition to the wired mouse at my desk. It's my "remote" since I don't have a TV. Xorg will quite happily support 2 or more mice simultaneously, I discovered.)
I've upgraded my netbook from Lucid to Maverick, and have a couple of questions:
1. My start-up apps don't appear to be running. In particular Tilda and Gnome-Do don't start up - and removal of the "Alt+F2" shortcut to run programs makes it hard to start them manually.
2. I'm still getting the old launcher as the desktop, with no search box in the top bar. (In many respects having the old launcher isn't so bad, as I'm Not Friends with the new Unity side-panel.
Like for instance, if I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx installed with XFCE, and it has an applications made for XFCE. will the applications also work on say some other distro like, Wolvix, that is an XFCE-based distro~????
What I am trying to say is: Do applications that are made for XFCE, work on ANY distro that has XFCE installed?
Some minimized apps no longer appear in the top menu and by that are no longer accessible.For example firefox with the minimize addon or Jungel Disk backup service.How can I reach apps that minimized them self and are not shown in the top menu?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am fairly new to linux but have been working with it for a good 3 months now, as usual linpus is giving me some hassle.I did the basic hack a while ago and everything was fine until the other day.I deleted firefox as it wasnt working properly and for some reason unknown to me firefox deleted some core pieces of info for the entire desktop....all i have is the bottom bar and the search bar...if i go through my files and run some xfce files; few of which will now load, i can get a basic desktop with some icons(file system, user files, SD card)but it only stays on for that load, if i start the laptop again its gone and i have to go through the whole process again.
everything runs fine just no desktop and it wont keep the simple desktop (if not better than original linpus desktop up) is there any code i can use in terminal to lock the desktop when i get it to the point i can get it to...?is there any code i can use to system restore to an earlier date, or similar?I have been thinking about downloading ubuntu and installing that as i have used that before and found it wonderful, problem being as its an acer onethere is no CD drive and now that everything is kaput it wont accept USB sticks either. know this can be done and i know i can find coding to get the usb drives to work again so no problem there, its just the whole desktop being shot is the issue reallyany help would be greatly appreciated ive been sifting through forums for 2 days now and i cant find any similar problem
During my two previous installation, I almost never try to include or exclude package during the process. I want to know if I only want to install XFCE as my only DE, how can i do it during the installation progress (I Know i can install both, or even with KDE, but I also know that i can do it later should I change my mind)?
Second question is, if I install only XFCE, what will I miss ?(no, not the gnome feature, but maybe fedora distro(gnome) specific tool or something). Last word, no I'm not asking what feature of gnome is absent in xfce nor which DE is better, so don't start it.
last night I updated F12 XFCE on my Acer Aspire One 8Gb SSD, there were about 140+ issues to update.
after reboot the dialog to select a user and login appeared, continuing nothing shows up -- no menu, no taskbar, no volumes, just the beautiful F12 background.
pressing ALT - F2 I am able to start commands, eg Thunar shows up displaying all volumes, files and even NFS remote drives. my conclusion is that everything works except the desktop...
how I can start the XFCE desktop environment so I can use the GUI?
On my old Acer Aspire One Im running Fedora 12 XFCE. Somehow I have disabled/removed the taskbar. I can still right click the desktop and get the Open in + Applications menu.
How do I re-enable the taskbar?
I'm running Fedora 12 XFCE on an old Acer Aspire One netbook. During some wi-fi testing, I "by mistake" disabled wi-fi by using the physical wi-fi switch. Now the wi-fi can't be re-enabled using the switch (the switch does nothing).If I right click on the Network icon in the XFCE panel, the "Enable Wireless" is greyed out, so I cant enable it using the GUI?
