Red Hat / Fedora :: Xfce Has Crashed?

Oct 28, 2010

I am fairly new to linux but have been working with it for a good 3 months now, as usual linpus is giving me some hassle.I did the basic hack a while ago and everything was fine until the other day.I deleted firefox as it wasnt working properly and for some reason unknown to me firefox deleted some core pieces of info for the entire desktop....all i have is the bottom bar and the search bar...if i go through my files and run some xfce files; few of which will now load, i can get a basic desktop with some icons(file system, user files, SD card)but it only stays on for that load, if i start the laptop again its gone and i have to go through the whole process again.

everything runs fine just no desktop and it wont keep the simple desktop (if not better than original linpus desktop up) is there any code i can use in terminal to lock the desktop when i get it to the point i can get it to...?is there any code i can use to system restore to an earlier date, or similar?I have been thinking about downloading ubuntu and installing that as i have used that before and found it wonderful, problem being as its an acer onethere is no CD drive and now that everything is kaput it wont accept USB sticks either. know this can be done and i know i can find coding to get the usb drives to work again so no problem there, its just the whole desktop being shot is the issue reallyany help would be greatly appreciated ive been sifting through forums for 2 days now and i cant find any similar problem

Debian Programming :: Eclipse Luna Crashed On XFCE

Jun 26, 2014

I've installed the new Eclipse Luna on my Debian Wheezy (with XFCE). When I try to run, the Eclipse crashes just after the splash screen runs. Well, I've tried to run on other JVM (1.7 update 60), but I got the very same problem.

Here's the log:
#
# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
#
# SIGSEGV (0xb) at pc=0x00007f17eb06873f, pid=19045, tid=139741378922240
#
# JRE version: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (8.0_05-b13) (build 1.8.0_05-b13)

[Code] ....

Is this a problem with the Eclipse or even its compatibility with my XFCE?

Fedora Installation :: F15 Crashed - Won't Boot Even From DVD

Jun 21, 2011

I installed F15 a couple days ago without much difficulty (and upgraded the kernel to the most recent, along with all the accompanying applications). However, I wanted to enhance my experience with the terminals, etc. So, today, I installed a gnome-3 advanced tweak or something along those lines (I forget the exact name already). This is software that is supposed to allow us to specify user-defined shells (not active yet), modify the terminal bars, etc. After installation, a menu bar came up, which allowed me to run the application. I ran it and it crashed.

Then I went to the applications section and started that job again and the whole system just froze, showing just a rotating wheel (as if a process is in progress). Nothing worked. So, I manually shut the system down and turned it back on again; and all I saw was that turning wheel and a small half-inch by half-inch square box (with just noisy colors). I then inserted my F15 installation DVD (the same DVD I used to install my OS), and started the machine; and the response is exactly the same as before: just that turning wheel with the noisy small square box. When I move my mouse around the wheel moves about in response. But, the system is just frozen.

Fedora :: System Crashed During Yum Update

Jul 11, 2011

My system system suffers from frequent kernel panics, which I think are due to gnome-shell with the nVidia driver. (I see no panic message and nothing is logged, but I've enabled magic SysRq and it makes no difference.) Twice this has occurred during yum-update's install stage, which is making me wonder. Uum-update then complained about an unfinished transaction, so I ran yum-complete-transaction as suggested. I've also tried yum-clean-all and rebuilding the RPM database, suggested in other threads, but I'm still seeing the following errors on yum-update:

--> Finished Dependency Resolution

I don't know where these 32-bit packages have come from this is an x86-64 system and the only x86-32 stuff I've intended to install is the Adobe flash plug-in. Also the later dupes are different 64-bit versions. I've tried "package-cleanup --cleandupes" as suggested in this thread: [URL]. It wants to remove the old versions, but also wants to remove packages that depend on them, including clutter, so I cancelled that. The first time round I was left with a barely usable system and had to reinstall, which I'd rather avoid, especially if this is going to be a regular occurrence. I'm not familiar with RPM (or kernel panics for that matter).

General :: Fedora System Crashed During Yum

Jul 9, 2010

I was concerned about a number of duplicates reported by yum and was cleaning with package-cleanup (logged in remotely with ssh and vnc) when suddenly all the fonts turned to music and the system froze.

I had run F13 preupgrade as a test to see how it would go...(in case this is important) but had not rebooted yet...

Now when I boot I get the splash and the fedora droplet fills with white, though it gets progressively slower as it approaches the top. Eventually the infinite f appears but that's where it stays.

I have been able to boot to a live-usb stick w/F13. And after some shear panic, I discovered that the root partition is buried in lvm, in a 935 GB physical partition.

I have mounted the logical volume and dd if=/mnt/oldroot | gz > /ExternalBackupDrive/oldroot.gz

so that if I break things further there is a chance that I can get back to a working system.

Is it just that my bootloader doesn't know how to mount the lvm?

Where do I look for clues?

Is there a boot option that will let me follow the progress?

Fedora :: Recover Files After Fedora Crashed

Feb 17, 2011

I had fedora 13 installed on my computer which is used a server for my php development. I had all my projects on that server. Not sure what caused this but my linux is not loading at all. It tries to load the kernel but fails and restart the machine.I confirmed that there is no hardware failure. I am planning to reinstalling fedora on the machine but I can't loose my projects which were in /var/www folder and the /home directory. Unfortunately I didn't take back for last 1 month.I wanted to know:

1) Is there any way I can recover the data for www and home folder
2) If I reinstall the fedora again then will it delete my old data on machine.

Really in a difficult situation as my projects development is halted due to this. Want to have some advice before reinstalling fedora.

Fedora :: After Last Update Nvidia Drivers Crashed

Mar 13, 2009

I updated fedora 10 a few days ago, by blindly installing every update available, and when i restarted, my nvidia drivers weren't loading, and I'm having an issue I had before, where the signal being sent to the monitor is out of frequency range. Basically when fedora tries to load its GUI, my monitor just goes blank. Before I could only fix it by plugging in a different (less tempermental) monitor, and messing around with the display driver.

I was wondering if there is a way to mess with the drivers from the command line. I really don't like switching out monitors, and i want to learn the skillz and such.

Fedora :: Crashed My System - Script Fail - 11

Aug 6, 2009

I was learning the bash shell, and playing around with scripts to remove files. I wrote a script, in ~/bin which read something like this: rm -dR $(ls $(~/Music2/*/* )) thinking that I would clear a bunch of worthless files from a test directory Music2. I was in ~/ when I ran the script - it did not act at all like I though and started removing all sorts of stuff. Hit ^C to no effect and then tried to shut it down, which it did in a really messed up way.

When I fired it back up it showed a long list of ext3 errors and at length came into a file system check which failed and dropped my into a shell. Looking in the home folders, everyone seems to be fine except my own - much of the personal stuff has been removed (not the end of the world) and I have this odd file called "Fedora Multi-Desktop" - which I had never seen before. Unfortunately I no longer have ~/bin or anything in it, thus I am not for certain that the above is exactly the script I ran as I can no longer look at it (if not it differs only in the -dR part, which perhaps was just -R)

So how do I get out of this one? Do I delete my user account (if so, how). Do I have to reload Fedora all over ?

Also - why did my script fail? Inside Music2 I had three directories - I thought it would open each directory in there, run a List on them and remove each one in the list so when it was done Music2 would have three directories in it, all of which would be empty. Clearly my test project failed!

Fedora :: Crashed And Died ... System Is Recoverable?

Dec 13, 2009

I've been running Fedora 12 for a few weeks on a laptop, and was just starting to get things the way I like it ... and last night as I was trying to unlock the screen using the fingerprint reader (which had always previously worked) the system became unresponsive and there was nothing I could do but push the power button. Now it will not boot up, I get one cursor flash when it's at the grub stage and then the screen goes dark, there is no hard disk activity. He's dead jim.

I'm a bit gutted and would like to recover this system if I can, rather than install something else over the top. I booted using an ubuntu live cd and mounted the lvm, and got into the /var/log/messages. The last entries in there before it crashed and burned are as follows:

Fedora :: Couldn't Open The Firewall From The Menu Because It Always Crashed?

Jan 8, 2010

I always had the x86 installed on my laptop, but I figured for fedora 12 I would install the i386 version so I would only have to burn 1 disc (desktop needs i386). But the first few days, I couldn't open the firewall from the menu because it always crashed. From terminal no problem. This was with a couple of these standard gnome apps. With the 'autmatic bug reporting tool' I can now see how many times each program crashes. Samba still crashes every time I try to open it, python crashed, firefox loves to crash these days (with a flash open), amsn crashed a couple of times (empathy and telepathy-butterfly packages).Ofcourse I update my system every few days, so I have the latest updates of each package.

Fedora Installation :: Crashed For No Apparent Reason Several Times?

Jul 1, 2011

I have just installed (after a series of crashes during the install) Fedora 15. I also have Ubuntu Natty installed and use it primarily but I wanted to reach out and try new distros.I've wanted to try Fedora and finally got enough nerve to try. Installing it crashed for no apparent reason several times.ehow it installed and booted right to Fedora. However, when finally figuring out how to run the updates, I began to have the same problem.(Someone elsewhere suggested trying to update through command line--which I did finally though I had a few crashes doing this).

Now I am logging in and then it will just inadvertently crash. I could be in firefox, or using terminal, etc. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to why this is happening and I feel frustrated. I really want to test out Fedora (it looks so nice!) but can't manage to stay afloat more than a few minutes. I might also mention that this does not happen in Ubuntu at all so I can't account for the issues. I have much to learn but I feel a bit intimidated by Fedora because it's so new to me.

Fedora Networking :: Yum Broke Wireless - Network Manager Crashed

So, after doing a 'yum update', I minimized the terminal and completely forgot about it - so I accidentally went ahead and suspended my laptop before it had finished. I resumed my laptop and noticed that yum hadn't finished 'cleaning up' the packages. Nevertheless, yum continued and the process finished. After an hour or so use of the internet (wirelessly), all of a sudden the wireless network disconnected, and NetworkManager crashed. I rebooted my computer only to find that NetworkManager now says that my 'firmware is missing' for my wireless card.

Fedora :: Install Just XFCE And Not Gnome Or KDE?

Aug 14, 2010

Is there a way to install just XFCE? and not Gnome or KDE? I don't mind Gnome, but I definitely don't like KDE. I have tried installing the XFCE spin to my hard drive, but when I use yum to update packages later, using the default repository, yum wants to install Gnome for some strange reason, and a bunch of other stuff I don't need. Is there a way to prevent this? because really you'd think the XFCE spin would setup yum so Gnome wouldn't be installed, wouldn't you think? I don't really mind Gnome being installed, its just that I never use it, I always use XFCE, so it seems like a waste of disk space to even install it.

well I guess the graphical boot loader uses Gnome, I don't know, but I do know yum installs a bunch of other stuff I don't use after the XFCE spin is installed to the hard drive. How do I prevent that from happening is what I'm asking?

My machine is an HP Pavilion DV6-1350US Notebook Entrainment PC

Fedora :: XFCE Over VNC Not Fully Starting Up

Sep 3, 2010

I have a Dell box that got a fresh install of Fedora 13, along with XFCE during the initial installation, and it works just fine from a local monitor/keyboard/mouse setup. Now, in wanting to setup VNC to allow a remote XFCE desktop, it's not quite starting up properly:

The result is that I'm able to connect to the VNC session from another computer, but all I see is my XFCE desktop pattern image, and the XFCE mouse cursor (not in a spinning 'wait' state; I know it's the XFCE mouse, since my VNC client has a simple dot cursor that gets overlaid over the XFCE cursor, and I can move the mouse around the screen and the cursor follows); no menu bar, no tool bar, no desktop icons.I've tried changing the last line of my xstartup file to "startxfce4 &", and "startx &" with the same result. Is there a log file I can look at that would tell why XFCE is not fully starting up?

Fedora :: 14 XFCE - Rough Around The Edges

Nov 3, 2010

Just installed and updated Fedora 14's XFCE spin and got the kmod-nvidia drivers installed and finally took a good look around the desktop and noticed a few graphical issues. In the Glossy theme, the effect for pushed-in buttons looks a little broken (i.e. on the task bar, there's the glossy background image behind the button but there's also a solid white-ish colored border on the top and left of the inside of the button). This makes buttons, progress bar troughs and other elements look really weird. I installed and set the Nimbus theme and it seems to be alright.

Secondly, icons seem to be broken. On the XFCE desktop, all the icons for removable media in their un-mounted state show up as a generic sheet-of-paper icon, and when I mount them, the icon turns into a generic blue folder icon (instead of a removable media icon like in FC13). In the Thunar file explorer, the icons for all removable media shortcuts are completely missing, and the Filesystem icon is a blue folder instead of a hard drive icon. And in the Places menu the removable media icons are missing too (but the Filesystem icon has the correct hard drive icon). The labels of the removable media are visible in both places, just not their icons. It seems to be a problem with the GNOME icon theme, as this problem is present in GNOME, Mist, and Fedora themes. In the Rodent theme however all icons are working as they should. The GTK+ problem seems to affect Clearlooks and Glossy (which uses Clearlooks). ClearlooksClassic and the other themes seem to be fine. See screenshots: [URL]

In the first note the appearance of the depressed button in the path bar and the icons in the shortcuts on the left, and in the second note the difference between mounted and unmounted removable media icons.
