This morning I did a minimal install of Debian to test out xfce and lxde, purely out of curiosity.I tried LXDE first. For various reasons I wasn't entirely pleased, so I removed it and installed xfce4 in a vanilla openbox session. Upon reboot, I was greeted with the CLI. I generated a new xorg.conf file to see if the transition to xfce had altered it, but was greeted with the CLI again after another reboot. I manually started X with 'startx' and noted that the xfce session manager was installed. The xdm session manager, however, was not.Installing xdm fixed the problem, kind of. I am now greeted with an xdm login screen rather than an xfce session login screen. What can I do to have xfce-session be my default login screen?

I have a debian 8.1.1 server running owncloud and a proxy server at home. I have everything working fine, with one exception. The proxy server won't start on boot. If I ssh into the server, then run "sockd -D" as root, it starts up and runs just fine. Any guides I find refer to the init.d script method that worked in Wheezy, but that isn't working. I think it has to do with Jessie switching to systemd? I had used someone elses script in init.d, and ran update-rc.d, but it still doesn't start.
With Jessie, how can I make "sockd -D" execute on system startup?
How to auto entry the X window (xfce 4) on debian 6 base system. I install Debian 6 only Base system, then install xfce4 use:

I can type "startx" entry the xfce4. I want auto entry the xfce X window, when the computer is started. How can I do it?
I'm tried lots of autologin lightdm document. Bu i cant success for auto login.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Debian 8.2.0 on an older machine (circa 2008, AMD Athlon Dual Core 5000B Processor, Nvidia nforce MCP61P Chipset, Nvidia Geforce 6150SE nForce 430 onboard video).
The install went smoothly, but occasionally the screen scrambles (see example below)
I have to force restart every time this occurs, and I'm not entirely sure what causes it. It used to only happen if I launched iceweasel too soon after login, but now it happens at any random time (in the middle of doing an image search, or right at the end of a 6 hour work session without any hiccups. I have only found topics on "screen blanking", and similar issues when using brightness controls on laptops, but nothing specifically like this.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSince update-manager was removed from Debian Jessie, I am looking for something similar or a way to install update-manager for 8.2. I would like a GUI.
I have tried gnome-packagekit, but some of the commands don't appear to work or it seems incomplete and I don't know of a way to test to make sure that it is working.
Other sites recommended to use smartpm. However, I cannot seem to find the plugin xfce4-smartpm-plugin in [Xfce Goodies] that would work as a notifier.
Unattended-upgrades does not meet my specifications, because to my knowledge there is no GUI configuration for this.
Though Debian Jessie is a great distro, I am finding it difficult to recommend to some newer users because it does lack a GUI updater/notifier at this time.
I am trying to make a web server with debian 6 and i want a xfce dsektop when i need to open files, extract, navigate but to be able to turn it off when i dont need it (to save ressources).I already installed it with aptitude install xorg and aptitude install xfce.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use network-manager in sid and it's incredibly frustrating because every 2 minutes or so it seems to scan for wireless access points, during which time my SSH connections completely hang and screw up. Pings start dropping packets as well. By doing an "iwlist scan" I can reproduce the behavior. Has anyone else dealt with this? I haven't been using network-manager, but I am currently due to mobility and needed VPN functionality... WICD with no network-manager works better but there's no gui-based VPN support. I've got an Atheros wireless device and I've read that supposedly it should be doing background scanning since kernel 2.6.32, but I haven't seen anything like that, and I'm on 2.6.32-5-amd64 currently, 2.6.32-3-amd64 behaves the same too.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a "time-server". It's sending time to different devices through different ports/protocols. The problem is that it has no operator and that makes some extra difficulties.
Now when i try to start it using terminal Code: Select allsudo ./myprogram works fine and
Code: Select all./myprogram doesn't work.
It is so because without sudo i have no access to ports. As a result If i add my program to System->Preferences->Startup Applications it has the same problem. So i need to start it as root, auto-start, right after auto-login to system but without entering password cause nobody will do it.
Also I need to start ntpd but it also asks password sometimes I've tried googles but it offer a few ways with entering password that isn't suitable for me or writing some scripts/changing system files but with no example I'm afraid to break it all. So is there a way to start Myprogram and NTPD as root with no password entering?

I have just did a fresh install debian jessie today in virtualbox, the X window manager is fxce. By default the default runlevel is 5, and I tried to change the /etc/inittab content:
Code: Select allid:3:initdefault:
and reboot, but it didn't effect to the result, the X-window auto loaded again >.<
I need to change it that will boot in to console mode first, and can run startx if necessary, how can I change it permanently?
I'm not sure how to do this. I checked the hard drive preferences and looked through the forums... I don't want to manually mount my hard drives(s) every time I boot up just to access my music and wallpapers.

How to get compiz to auto-start. What seems to be the generally accepted method (from what a few google searches and the debian wiki tell me) of using gconf-editor and changing the window manager from 'gnome-wm' to 'compiz' in desktop > gnome > session > required_components doesn't change anything. The only method I found that did not involve using a terminal and running 'compiz --replace' every time I boot the computer was to add compiz and fusion-icon to the gnome startup apps, but this causes unwanted flickering (it starts metacity and then replaces it with compiz, ie it's simply automating what I would do with the terminal). Autostarting the fusion-icon alone does not start compiz, although it allows me to start it from it's menu if I right click the icon. Note that I sometimes use fluxbox as well, so starting it on boot isn't really an option either.
Perhaps this can be useful :
compiz:
Installed: 0.8.4-4
Candidate: 0.8.4-4
gnome-session:
Installed: 2.30.2-3
Candidate: 2.30.2-3
I have already tried editing /etc/slim.conf and making the "Automatically login..." look like this: auto_login yes default_user<username>
BUT nothing I've tried has work.
I bought a new computer and installed ubuntu 10.04 about 2 months ago, and until yesterday it worked pretty well. Last night it acted kind of weird (slow, application would start loading and then just die) so I restarted the machine. That's when I understood that something bad happened.
When the machine starts and the os begins to load I get a bunch of text that says things like:
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: No such file or directory.
Same for sys and proc, there might be much more in the buffer but I can't seem to able to go up. I did not do any thing special last night and so I'm clueless of the reason for this. Also, since in this version of ubuntu the boot options are not displayed by default I tried pressing a key on boot in order to try another booting option but when I do that I just get the flickering cursor sign.
I've successfully installed Debian testing (squeeze) on my old iMac G3. I didn't select a desktop environment as a preconfigured package, but only left "standard system utilities" checked.Once I rebooted, I logged in as root (on the command line) and ran "apt-get install xfce4 xfce4-goodies gnome-icon-theme xdm", let all that pull in and installd then rebooted. As the system was booting, I could see all the services starting and whatnot, but when it gets to the line "Starting xdm..." the screen changes to black, but stays black for a good 2 minutes. I tried hitting some keys on the keyboard, as well as typingy login credentials, even though I can't see them, but nothing seems to work. I've tried rebooting several times

On my debian web server I curently have ImageMagick 6.3.7 08/07/09 Q16 since this is an old version of imagemagick i wanted to upgrade my system that still runs etch, and afterwards upgrade imagemagick. I can not see what version the current lenny imagemagick package has, but I assume it is newer then 6.3.7, no?
When i ugraded I found out that my apt-sources used stable rather than etch. So I already had a mix of lenny and etch I suppose. I then had > cat /etc/debian_version 4.0 Before I upgraded I changed my apt sources from stable to etch, updated the package-tools and did a dist-upgrade (for details, I followed these instructions). After restarting I have still 4.0 as debian version. Also uname -r is 2.6.17. How can I do a correct update?.
Also my services were not started (ftp, ssh, apache2), so I asked my hoster to start the ssh service. This morning everything was up again, but it seems like nobody there have had a look at this. How do I absolutely ensure that my ssh service is start at boot. It is a remote webserver, so I need at least this service to be running.
I've decided to try Debian Lenny, after i succefully installed it without any problems there appears to be a problem - after loading the services and etc, my monitor turns off with a floating message saying it cannot display the current resolution, and that i should set it to 1280x1024@60Hz.
View 1 Replies View RelatedDespite having the Gnome Power Manager set to put the display to seep after 30 minutes, it always happens after 5 minutes. The display will go blank but still lit, and then it powers off after the 30 minutes. Surely, if I set it to 30 minutes, the display should power off then, and not just blank after 5? I have no screensaver packages installed so it's nothing to do with that.

Currently I don't think that there are any installed from Sid that have not since been updated through testing. It also contains one package from Lenny that does not exist in Testing for some reason, ogle the dvd player.
After an update the other week my gui failed to come up. That is not that unusual with nvidida. So I reinstalled the driver and all seemed to be fine until the next reboot some days later which failed. I reinstalled the driver again and all seemed fine.

I have tried the whole group of driver packages out of sid, testing, stable. All are afflicted with the same problem. When the box drops back to the login if I login and issue from root '/etc/init.d/kdm stop' then '/etc/init.d/kdm start' the gui comes up just fine. It also seams to launch much faster than it has for some time.
A friend has questioned if kdm is starting to early in the launch process. I think he may be on to something. But looking at the files in /etc/rc*.d does not seem to indicate to me that is the case. kdm has the launch number 5.
The machine has been converted to the, what is it, multi-process launch thingy, quite some time ago now, like a year maybe? These are what is in the sequence from kdm on
