OpenSUSE :: KDE: Apps That Not Start With Alt+f2
Aug 22, 2011
I have noticed that are a few applications (non part of the kde apps) that do not launch with alt + f2 (command name). Instead I have to use konsole first and write the command name, then the apps appears successfully.
The same problem I have of course with the same apps if I make a desktop shorcut. These apps never show up! Thus I would like to ask you what should I do to make these shortcuts and alt+f2 launches to work.

Since updating a few days ago I cannot start dolphin, digikam and a lot of other KDE apps any more. The error message from Dolphin is
Code:
dolphin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib64/libkdeinit4_dolphin.so: undefined symbol: _ZN6Phonon11VideoPlayer5eventEP6QEvent
The versions are openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit) and KDE 4.6.

On the other thread, we (read: me) went off topic of that request, therefor i want to make an extra thread for this. The request is quite simple.
1) When i login to my DE (LXDE) i want to have several applications start automaticly.. Status: Done.
2) Now, i want them to be started on other displays/desktop, the virtual desktop ones, those you access with ctrl+alt+arrowkey. Status: requesting
I had figured that there's an option to those applications i'd like to be started, display=.However, starting up these apps with the display argument, causes graphic errors on LXPanel and causes an error, rather than to be display on current desktop.

Is it possible to have applications open on one of my other desktops instead of the main? Suppose I wanted to have a certain database-excel type or word document open everytime, or other programs that I need open but not cluttering my main desktop, can I do it?

One of the first things I do when starting Ubuntu (Netbook Edition) is to open a Terminal (ctrl-alt-T) with three tabs in it (ctrl-shift-T, ctrl-shift-T), one with irssi, one with ipython and one extra with just the commandline. Then I set the titles (F2) of the first two respectively to "irssi" and "ipython".Is there some way to write a script that automatically does all this? Or maybe save this configuration in a profile setting or something?

I have headless debian as a server which i use over tightvnc server running on it. Vnc works fine but I can't for example run sudo mousepad or any other gui app from terminal, it says something about not having the rights to open it as root. I understand this has something to do with security, but my computers are behind nat so the vnc server can only be connected inside my lan so i don't mind.

I use 2 monitors under Ubuntu 9.10, but I have them set up in a unique way. The primary (CRT) faces me on my desk, but the other (widescreen LCD) is turned away from me, because I use it only to watch movies from my couch. My video card is an Nvidia GeForce 9800 GTX+, using the proprietary Nvidia driver package, with Xinerama turned on, so the desktop extends across both displays. Given that setup, is there any way to control which display applications open upon? Several apps have started opening on one display or the other, seemingly at random. Further, some apps start on the primary display, but open their subwindows on the secondary display. It's very annoying, because I can't see the second screen, so I can't drag the windows back to the primary desktop.
I would also like to have VLC Media Player (or any other app) always open on the secondary screen, on purpose. I almost never watch movies sitting at my desk, but rather from the couch. I placed a VLC launcher icon on the secondary screen, but when started it opens on the primary display. (If you're wondering how I can click on anything from my couch, I have a wireless mouse there in addition to the wired mouse at my desk. It's my "remote" since I don't have a TV. Xorg will quite happily support 2 or more mice simultaneously, I discovered.)

I've upgraded my netbook from Lucid to Maverick, and have a couple of questions:
1. My start-up apps don't appear to be running. In particular Tilda and Gnome-Do don't start up - and removal of the "Alt+F2" shortcut to run programs makes it hard to start them manually.
2. I'm still getting the old launcher as the desktop, with no search box in the top bar. (In many respects having the old launcher isn't so bad, as I'm Not Friends with the new Unity side-panel.

I recently installed opensuse 11.4 on a remote server. It has GNOME installed as a desktop. The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:
jjmuw@g01:~> xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2 users
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "::1:1.0".
No protocol specified
No protocol specified
[code]....
(y2base:4872): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: ::1:1.0
Followed by a hang. This is also affecting things like the Xen configuration contexts (creating/managing VMs).

I installed openSUSE 11.4_amd64 on my system. All works fine but a lot of popular apps are missing from the repos. OpenSuse11.3 had them but 11.4 doesn't!I searched for apps like skype, isomaster, acetoneiso, openbravo erp,gsmartmon,smooth-task etc but didn't get any result. I have contrib and pacman repos enabled, still no luck...all the above mentioned apps were available in 11.3 then why not in 11.4..is it 'coz it released recently?

Im comming from ubuntu/mint and one of the things I got used too was doing something like "sudo nautilus" or "sudo gedit" and similar things. In Suse 11.3 I always get errors like the following
(gedit:6115): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
kate: cannot connect to X server
Could not parse arguments: Cannot open display:
or similar variations of these. What can I so to prevent this from happening? even if I do "su" and try from there it doesnt always work.I like Suse as it feels more professional then ubuntu, but I am trying to make it as user friendly.

Printing from KDE no longer works. Opening a simple text file in Kwrite and attempting to print the document causes kwrite to hang. While Googling on this problem I came across this thread. The case is very similar.
[URL]
Running kwrite from the command line does not provide any information to diagnose this behavior. Printing works from Firefox and OpenOffice. Printers produce test pages ok.
This behavior came about after the HP C6380 stopped scanning. During my investigations I was forced to reinstalled hplip. This may have broken something.

Hi
I'm using Gnome 2.3 under 11.3 x64.
Whenever I minimise an app, it disapperas from the taskbar. I've fixed it by installing the window selector; however, it only works for apps running in my main monitor. Anything on the external monitor doesn't show.
How do I fix this?
And a Merry Christmas to all!

after being not so satisfied with opensuse 11.4 (worked really slow at times), i decided to downgrade to 11.3. But now, some applications won't start. When starting personal kontact, i only got a notification that akonadi server is starting but it doesn't progress. Only thing I can do is to kill the app.Same for Clementine (amarok-like player), but here it doesn't even try to start. So, I was thinking to delete all the settings folders concerning these apps in my home folder, but it doesn't change anything. I did so by searching for *kmail* *kontact* and *clementine* and erased those folders. Could it be that I forgot some? Some folders under some different names? I'm not really experienced into this subject

There are some apps for win that run on wine just with an ordinary install procedure. There are others that will never work at all. But there are also some that wine users claim to have made run by changing some specific configuration of wine, using some trick or even creating scripts on playonlinux.
So if I try to run an app on wine and it doesn't and I don't find any user documentation about some specific trick or config for that app what adjustments can I do to try to make it run? I mean, it's tiring and perhaps foolish to spend hours playing with every possible config in wine frontend without knowing what I'm doing. So what can I do to find out what libraries, configs, tricks or scripts are needeed to make an app run under wine if it didn't at the first try?

If I need an app and can't find it in software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.4 at all, is there any other place I should look for it? I mean, maintained and reasonably secure place, not Google. Or have I to resort to downloading sources from developer already?

I mainly use KDE apps only, but a problem in Amarok is forcing me to look elsewhere. I'm not sure how long this issue has existed but I'm unable to play any sound from certain applications.
So far Rhythmbox, Exaile, Guayadeque, Firefox and Songbird don't produce any sound. Amarok, Juk, SMPlayer and VLC are fine. As the apps with problems are mainly Gnome/GTK apps, I'm suspecting a gstreamer problem.
My desktop is 11.3 x64 with KDE 4.6 beta 1. I've tried all three phonon backends, although Xine is the only one that works with Amarok. Pulse wasn't installed, I tried installing it but it didn't even detect my SPDIF output, so no audio whatsoever. Hardware is ATI HD4200 onboard sound card through the SPDIF output. Gstreamer is installed.

I've just upgraded from 11.1 to 11.2. My KDE apps (Firefox, Yast, Kmail) are now excruciatingly slow - particularly Kmail which is now virtually unusable. Before the upgrade on my 3GB RAM laptop the response was great - so something has broken during the upgrade process. What is interesting is when I open in Failsafe - the speed is fine.
My thoughts are maybe graphics card acceleration but why would it be ok in failsafe? Not really sure where to start looking here.

When I run graphical applications as root (on KDE4), they inherit my window decorations setting, and use the default widget style. I know that, obviously, I can configure root's widget style to match mine, but I do like the visual distinction. I just don't like it using my window decorations, because I have that nicely configured to match my widget style (and therefore clash with anything else). Is there any way to tell KWin to decorate root windows differently, or even run a separate window manager for root windows?

I just recently installed openSUSE 11.2 (KDE desktop). Like some others, I'm having trouble getting apps working with my iPod Touch. So far, I've tried two apps: amarok and gtkpod. Neither one seems to detect my iPod. When I connect the iPod to my computer, I get a popup indicating that some type of camera has been connected. Also, when I look at dmesg's output, I see stuff related to the iPod (Apple info) and no errors as far as I can tell. But I don't see any device file for it (either under /dev or /media).
