Fedora Servers :: See Messages In Logwatch Report Then Cannot Find The Actual Log Entry?
Jan 23, 2010
I occasionally see messages in my logwatch report then cannot find the actual log entry. Is there any way I can have logwatch give a clearer report?an example:
vsftpd:
Unknown Entries:
authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=ftp ruser=a-specific-user
[code]....

i want to make sure my mail server is behaving as expected. the past two nights, i've received logwatch notices below. the section in question is the 20 or so deferrals from some .ru e-mail address. i've since removed the user that registered on my wordpress blog (wlvp@yandex.ru) and added the three IP address to iptables DROP, but these "e-mails" still look like they're in some queue unless i'm reading wrong. i've removed known usernames in case you find the numbers useful. why are all these deferred messages here? if they're stuck in a queue, can i remove them?

I'm trying to test out Natty to see if I want to run with Unity. I'm not interested in wiping my production machine just to play with it. So this will be a VM install only for now.
So far, not a single alpha or beta nor even the final allows me to run unity. My hardware is perfectly capable (allegedly) of running Unity. The machine is only 6 months old.
I tried the Unity test script in Natty, and it tells me "no" but it also is telling me the wrong video card info. (apparently it is reading virtual hardware, not the real thing)
So how do I get VMWare Player to report or use my actual hardware, or for Natty to "see" the real card? Is this possible? If not, how in the world does ANYONE test Unity without actually installing it on a gamble? (note, a liveCD won't work because with an nVidia card, I have to install proprietary drivers which require a restart - Chicken, meet Egg.)

When we have Oracle 10g in RedHat, the free memory goes down soon after bootup of the system and never increases. I learnt from various forums that Linux does cache the disk files for the better performance. And when any application requires memory they get the memory and the caching does not block any memory. We want to capture the free memory available for one the harware planning activity.
1) When we use vmstat command, it gives very less free memory. since it caches large size files, the free memory is very low.
2) We tried free command, but how do we know how much actual free memory is available. i.e. excluding the cache usage

Well I downloaded Catalyst 10.12 for linux. Was trying to build packages for Fedora 14. But was unable to find Fedora entry in it. Wonder why it is not there? Here is my X
[Code]...
How am I suppose to install catalyst if they don't have the packages ready yet ? I am not so installing RHEL6 packages in Laughlin cause of kernel conflict. Or is it that Catalyst still not compatible with Kernel 2.6.35.x ?

I successfully installed Fedora 11 from the DVD iso. At the end, the installation program prompts me to reboot the system. But when the boot loader appears after rebooting, there are only the old entries.
I have 2 IDE disks and one sata disk. The first IDE disk is hd0, the second IDE is hd1. The SATA disk is hd2. In the setup, I selected hd0 to install grub. Fedora 11 was installed on the SATA disk (hd2).[edit] I forgot to say, that Fedora 10 is on /dev/sda and Fedora 9 on /dev/sdb

I'm getting error messages or a password querry withouht entry box, if i want to apply admin changes on my system in gui tools
e.g.Software Center
Language Settings
free - gdm settins
users & groups
gksu and sudo are working with my user - it was the 1st user on the system, today i got the following message:
Quote:
org.freedesktop.PolicyKit.Error.NotAuthorized: ('system-bus-name', {'name': ':1.122'}): org.debian.apt.install-or-remove-packages
and sometimes the box apears multiple times and shakes like it does if entering a wrong password - and ends up with failed I'd be pleasant to get some help as it looks like most of the people in the german IRC don't know what to do as they thought like me these software parts would use gksu

When i logged into my desktop, i got a notification that said there was boot messages. I remember trying to find this before in /var/log, so that i could investigate why i couldn't get the nvidia drivers to work (which i now know is because i'm using 14-beta, which has a debugging kernel), but couldn't find it.
Code:
Welcome to Fedora

Im trying to find a way in redhat to see if there is a command that could tell me the actual used memory by the system. For example when i do the free command, i want to see the Used minus cached value. Is there a way linux can report the true used memory and not the cached/buffer etc? if there is not specific command for that, can someone tell me a bash script that could calculate used-cached ?

Gidday, for some reason some of my RHEL servers don't send out a daily logwatch email (most do, but two don't) - and sadly I have no idea how to troubleshoot this.
Can anybody give some help/hints as to where/how I may troubleshoot this. I should add that these servers can/do send emails (I have some cronjobs that fire off emails upon completion of their jobs, so I know its not a sendmail config issue).

Does anyone know the trick to getting Logwatch to make its entries a little less chatty and leave out the "Detailed" section of the Postfix report? I can't seem to tone it down and the daily reports I get include every recipient, host, etc., which is too much info to make a summary report useful. The first portion I get looks like this:
****** Summary *************************************************
9 *Warning: Pre-queue content-filter connection overload
2 SASL authentication failed
432 Miscellaneous warnings[code]....
This would be fine for a quick review that I do first thing. However, the "Detailed" portion that follows is over 2,800 lines long!

I've suddenly stopped getting emails from logwatch which runs on an Ubuntu server daily using cron. After a good day or so of troubleshooting, I was able to establish that it was the 'Service = named' line in my logwatch.conf file, which was stopping the emails from coming through. If I commented out this line, the logwatch emails come through with no issues, uncomment, and I don't get an email. I don't get any error from logwatch itself when I run it, even with '--debug high', leading me to think that my email configuration is setup ok, at least. Furthermore, I tried running logwatch with '--output file --format html' and logwatch produces a valid html file.
I then thought: "Could I have a entry in my Bind/named log files which could be rejected by my ISP's smtp server?". So, (to the best of my knowledge) I cleared out the log files in /var/log that contained messages from named. I then ran logwatch (including the named service in my logwatch.conf file) and I got an email through, with a pretty much empty named section, which is exactly what I anticipated. Great! - it's fixed.
So, the cron.daily ran early this morning, but still no email in my inbox when I got up. I then tried to run 'logwatch --Range today' and lo and behold, I got a logwatch report email, which included a named section, with log entries in there. So it seems that something that's been logged by named overnight to my logfiles (i.e. '--Range yesterday') has caused issues again with logwatch's ability to send reports through my ISP's smtp servers.

I have currently 7 servers that report logwatch every day.Fact is that it's lot of information to process every day, I would like to have as short as possible overview of events happened in last 24h is only critical/warning information . It would be + if all servers output could be gathered in 1 email

I have a Fedora server at home. I don't want it to be running all the time to reduce the power usage and be more green It only works , whet it is really needed. So when it is not in use (no ssh or http connections have been active for some time), a custom python script suspends it. I have set it to wake up on unicast messages, so when somebody connects to it, the server wakes up.In Fedora 12 everything worked fine: when the server was sleeping and you connected to it using ssh or a web browser, the client waited for couple of seconds until the server was up and then connected (actually it worked even when server was turned off: the command "ssh [user]@[server]" just waited until server was booted up and then connected.)
Now I installed Fedora 13 on the server. When I try to connect to the server when it's sleeping, the client waits for some time (and server wakes up), then the connection just times out. When I try to connect again, it works. When server is up and running, I can connect to it. So when it is sleeping I have to connect twice: first to wake it up and then connect again to log in.Do you have any ideas what is causing this problem, as it is really annoying for me and I don't want to have it running all the day. Also, I have not set up the network in the best way, I think. To start the network at boot, i have put the command
Code:
ifup eth0
to /etc/rc.local.
To start the network when resurming from suspend, I have creted a script with the same command in /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d. It works, but it does not seam to be the *right* way to do this. Maybe this is also causing the first problem. So how have you managed to get a working network connection on your Fedora 13 headless server?

Firefox 3.1 beta 3 won't load. When I open the application, the little bouncy icon bounces, and the task manager shows "Firefox Web Browser", but this only stays this way for about 15 seconds then just goes away. No error or anything.
I've had this identical problem when I try to open certain programs with Wine too. Is there some place I can find a detailed error report on these failures?

I've installed Logwatch 7.3.6 via the rpm on my CentOS 5.4 server. The issue is I'm getting basically empty reports from logwatch. The only two sections which have any information are samba and diskspace.
The only default options in the config file I've modified are: Code: print = No output = html I'm suspecting the issue has to do with the fact that the as-logged host name doesn't match my current host name. However, I've tried manually changing this on a few entries so they match but they didn't show up in the report. According to the config file, the default for option HostLimit is "No" -- so Logwatch should not care what hostname it sees in a log file, right?
