I'm testing broken hdd with badsectors, and I've got some i/o errors, that I can read (just the most recent) using dmesg command (dmesg buffer). I would like to see whole log, that is interesting for me, but I cannot find where it is stored in /var/log

Jul 11, 2010I have a Fedora server at home. I don't want it to be running all the time to reduce the power usage and be more green It only works , whet it is really needed. So when it is not in use (no ssh or http connections have been active for some time), a custom python script suspends it. I have set it to wake up on unicast messages, so when somebody connects to it, the server wakes up.In Fedora 12 everything worked fine: when the server was sleeping and you connected to it using ssh or a web browser, the client waited for couple of seconds until the server was up and then connected (actually it worked even when server was turned off: the command "ssh [user]@[server]" just waited until server was booted up and then connected.)
Now I installed Fedora 13 on the server. When I try to connect to the server when it's sleeping, the client waits for some time (and server wakes up), then the connection just times out. When I try to connect again, it works. When server is up and running, I can connect to it. So when it is sleeping I have to connect twice: first to wake it up and then connect again to log in.Do you have any ideas what is causing this problem, as it is really annoying for me and I don't want to have it running all the day.Also, I have not set up the network in the best way, I think. To start the network at boot, i have put the command

To start the network when resurming from suspend, I have creted a script with the same command in /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d. It works, but it does not seam to be the *right* way to do this. Maybe this is also causing the first problem. So how have you managed to get a working network connection on your Fedora 13 headless server?

Programming :: Script For Searching Through Messages For Multiple FTP Hits
Oct 25, 2010My script looks really crap and messy, the logic isn't great and I'm not hugely happy with it. Also it echo's $i instead of an actual IP address (line 10). How to improve this. It basically searches through /var/log/messages for multiple FTP hits and when the hit count is higher than a specific number the IP is added to a config file and ftp is restarted. There are some obvious flaws in my script.

I'm not even sure what will happen if I get multiple responses for my $TOPHITS. It would be cool if it could search for IP's already blacklisted somehow, it might actually be easier to just create a file with a set of blacklisted IP's or something.

Jul 21, 2010I am new here and have only been using Linux for about 3 months so please help by explaining things clearly and don't assume I should know. However, for reasons too detailed to mention here I want to know how dmesg works. What I understand is that it provides log details of the startup, hardware etc until logger takes over. What I want to know is this: Do you still get new log messages in dmesg after boot and after the logger has taken over or is it simply a snapshot of what happens at boot time If you shutdown you machine or more importantly something happens to cause it to crash, does it or is it possible to make it record dmesg logs or is it purly a function of boot up

Jun 13, 2011I run F15 on my desktop PC and /var/log/dmesg is not being updated. I used preupgrade to upgrade from F14 to F15 on June 3. I boot F15 at least once per day. /var/log/dmesg has not been updated since June 3. /var/log/dmesg was being updated correctly when I ran F14. On f15, if I issue "dmesg" from the command line, I get the expected result. Is this a bug?

Is this benign, can i ignore?
The message doesnot appear when I connect to the external ports.

AT the moment the stick is being detected and all works. But still confused as to whether I have a serious problem that may lead to the usb stick going missing or hanging at some point or is this error msg just a spurious one that I can safely ignore?

Jan 2, 2011I installed ubuntu with the windows installer. while installing in windows, multiple error messages showed up, but installation still proceeded.it rebooted, and ubuntu finished installation.on the next reboot,when i chose ubuntu from the windows boot manager, it loaded grub.however,there was no option for booting ubuntu in grub, and you are forced to go back to the windows boot manager.

Mar 18, 2010I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.

winbindd.* /dev/null

Aug 4, 2010I have Postfix + Unix Accounts + Virtual Domains. I have a bunch of domains hosted on my machine, let's call them [URL] [URL] and [URL]... etc Until know, domain2.com, domain3.com were mapped in virtual domains to [URL] So this is how /etc/postfix/virtual looks like:

Like I said, all mail accounts are unix accounts, so, if for example I have the user "paul" this user will receive e-mail for ALL DOMAINS. [URL]But as it turns out, I now need a COMPLETELY ISOLATED domain... let's call it [URL]. So If I create a new user, let's call it "steve" I want steve to receive e-mail ONLY on [URL] and not on all others.
I would have to redo the whole thing from the beginning. I'd have to comment out the $mydestination parameter in the main.cf file and start using only virtual domains. So if I have the following users: paul, steve, sally, megan, jenny and I want paul and steve to ONLY receive mail for domain1.com, sally and megan to receive mail for domain2.com and jenny to receive mail for domainX.com, my /etc/postfix/virtual file would have to look like this:

I'd have to create the unix account and then start modifying the /etc/postfix/virtual file.

Sep 9, 2010I've got two sound cards fitted, before I've always killed pulseaudio as a pain in the butt.
Without pulseaudio enabled I could run two audio apps simultaneously, ie run a SDR ( software defined radio) app , and listen to music or watch TV at the same time.
However, with puls audio running, you can only run one, either input to either output. So can a second instance of pulseaudio be run, master and slave perhaps ?

Sep 11, 2010I'm trying to set up awstats for my web server which runs ISPConfig3. Due to ISPConfig, my log-rotated files have the extension .log.gz, and the naming syntax of DATE-access.log.gz.
According to awstats documentation, I need their tool to merge the log files, however, I cannot get it to work. I always get file not found or pipe error like messages.

I took a look at permissions, log files are world-readable. Checked path's 1000 times, no typo. When I try to find out whats wrong, the problems usually begins when I try to use the * character in the LogFile variable, ..

Ubuntu Installation :: Shows Multiple CPU Overtemp Messages And Freezes With Totally Black Screen
Jan 20, 2010I burnt the Ubuntu 9.10 ISO to CD and installed on a freshly nuked Dell 2350. It is pentium 4 at 1.8 MHZ with 512 RAM. Just a spare machine I have sitting there. Install went fine, restarted box, boot from hard drive. I get the little white Ubuntu symbol on a black screen and then a black screen with un-occupied white tool bars at top and bottom of screen and a functional mouse pointer, then nothing. It freezes there.
If I restart by holding the power switch in it occasionally shows multiple CPU overtemp messages and freezes with totally black screen. I can run the CD live and everything works like a champ. I'm going to like Ubuntu once I have this sorted out. If I boot from CD and choose the run from first hard drive option, everything loads and works fine. I was able to remove CD, update and save preferences, etc..
On one occasion, I was able to restart and boot from hard drive and it worked fine but usually it freezes at previously mentioned black screen with white bars top and bottom with mouse pointer. Please excuse my ignorance as I have very little knowledge of the inside workings of computers. I didn't even know about burning ISO's or changing boot orders until reading online. For what it's worth, the computer worked fine with no known hardware problems when it was running XP. It also is completely stock with no mods or added/replaced hardware.

Sep 18, 2010I am using LDAP to manage the autofs and everything works fine. I have a situation here that I can't figure out how to do. I need to use 2 direct map in auto.master, but the LDAP service doesn't allow me to add 2 "cn: /-" entries in the directory.

Apr 20, 2011Can ANYONE point me in the right direction on how to use storage on multiple servers as a single cluster?I thought storage cluster was for that but, after much googling, and even more help from here, I don't think that achieves my goal. My goal is to have multiple servers share a file system, to act as somewhat of a network raid, so if node-A goes down the files are available on other nodes, and hopefully so when the capacity of the nodes are reached I can add nodes to expand the "cluster".

* Internal accounting system to download and process emails
* Public web server to visit
I could put each system on its own separate box -- for example, it's generally good practice to separate anything that external users have access to (such as a webserver) from internal processes such as accounting. Now, rather than dishing out the money for two separate servers, could I get away with just installing new instances of VMWare on the same box for each system?
To give you an idea, these are not large scale computationally sensitive systems. The accounting one is simply downloading and tallying emails, and the latter is just a webserver with maybe 5 hits per day on a good day. I could definitely pick up a new box for say $50, but I wanted to know the general practice of using VMWare on the same box versus two separate boxes.
Fedora Networking :: Tool To Create Multiple Listening Servers On TCP And UDP Ports
Jan 17, 2011Looking for a test tool where I can fire up any number of ports (TCP and / or UDP) to listen on.
I am currently getting my using nc but its only 1 port at a time (i know I can open up multiple sessions but thats cumbersome), it can't do UDP, and it closes at the end of the session.
A friend has suggested socat but it looks pretty much the same except it can do UDP, but also cumbersome, I have to manually output to a different file per port, etc.
Basically its so I can quickly test firewall and NAT rules.

Jan 3, 2011I have configured my Cisco ASa Firewall to send its logs to my ubuntu server in /var/log/cisco/ I see the logfiles populating in real time, but i can also see all the logs are also wtitten to /var/log/messages. How can i make sure i do not have a log redundancy? I dont want my firewall logs displayed in messages since there are now sent to /var/log/cisco.
