Server :: Deferrals Appearing Frequently In Nightly Logwatch Report

i want to make sure my mail server is behaving as expected. the past two nights, i've received logwatch notices below. the section in question is the 20 or so deferrals from some .ru e-mail address. i've since removed the user that registered on my wordpress blog (wlvp@yandex.ru) and added the three IP address to iptables DROP, but these "e-mails" still look like they're in some queue unless i'm reading wrong. i've removed known usernames in case you find the numbers useful. why are all these deferred messages here? if they're stuck in a queue, can i remove them?

I occasionally see messages in my logwatch report then cannot find the actual log entry. Is there any way I can have logwatch give a clearer report?an example:

I just set up a FC 12 server and would like to disable the nightly YUM update. However, it appears that the following doesn't work:

I have 2 'how-to's' with rsync neither are working. I need to backup nightly some items and using a command line, I am prompted with a password, enter and it works. I now tried these 2 items in the shell script, both of them still when run prompt for a password. I have tried;
#!/bin/bash
export RSYNC_PASSWORD=passwordhere
- and -
also created a blank file called pw (to test) and then tried
#!/bin/bash
rsync --password-file=/pw xxxx
Both of those options when run still prompt for a password. These severs are running old RH9 servers.

This problem is occurring on Red Hat EL 5 WS. However, I have two CentOS 5 systems, with similar configuration to RH EL 5, where this problem does not occur.
I am getting this error:
Can't exec "sendmail": No such file or directory at ./0logwatch line 1018, <TESTFILE> line 1.
Can't execute sendmail -t: No such file or directory

I have a squid proxy server (which I am very new too) which all traffic from my office goes through. The proxy itself is working fine, but I can not get logwatch to email me a daily summary. logrotate seems to be throwing an error:
# logrotate /etc/logrotate.conf
error: squid:1 duplicate log entry for /var/log/squid/access.log
My /etc/logrotate.d/squid file is below... My access logs are in /logs/squid not in /var/log/squid.

I have currently 7 servers that report logwatch every day.Fact is that it's lot of information to process every day, I would like to have as short as possible overview of events happened in last 24h is only critical/warning information . My ISP blocks outgoing email if it does not login properly with a valid account. I successfully configured sendmail to use SMART_HOST and confAUTH_OPTIONS with confAUTH_MECHANISM set to LOGIN PLAIN.
It successfully sends email because I tested it with evolution sending through 127.0.0.1, but I need to specify myacount@mydomain.com as the email address for root.
But it doesn't work for logwatch because it sends as from root@localhost.localdomain, and my ISP's smtp server rejects it. The message I get back in root@localhost account is the following:

I thought that I should masquerade all emails from this domain, so I configured sendmail as specified in [1] section "24.3.1.4. Masquerading", but it doesn't work. It seems that masquerading in sendmail is broken or something is wrong in the documentation.

I have sendmail 8.13.8-2 and centos-release-5-4.el5.centos.1.
Is there a way to specify the "From:myacount@mydomain.com" in logwatch ? or Is there a way to make it work the masquerading in sendmail so I can masquerade everything as coming from a specific account?

We have following setup,
1. Webserver (Centos 5.5)
2. Mail server (Centos 5.5)
We have configured autossh successfully to create/manage the ssh tunnel into mail server in order to dump all emails to localhost port.
To auto start autossh in boot time we have included following into /etc/rc.d/rc.local,

So whenever our web application wants to send out emails it dump all emails to localhost:33465 port, easy piecy, all are working great
Now we have a requirement that logwatch reports should get delivered via the same ssh tunnel rather than installing postfix and configuring as a relay.
In logwatch is there a way to achieve that?

we are using a DELL server installed with RHEL release 3(update 2) for running SS7 stack. we are using it for telecommunication testing. from last two months it is getting out of network though the server is up. we are not able to connect it through ssh using putty from local desktop. I tried searching for the reason in logs under /var/log/messages but i could not fine it. please tell me the path under which i can find the system error messages. I am far too often getting connections dropped when trying to load web pages from my local server. From my mac running Safari I get the error message "Safari can't open the page...because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection." From Firefox on my Ubuntu 0.10 desktop it opens the window that says "You have chosen to open index.php..." and ask if I should edit the file or save it. When I tail the apache2 access.log it shows the previous successful page load but the one that failed is not mentioned. In error.log I get some stuff I don't understand, except the last line which says aborted:

I have setup a cluster.Which is basically a few Virtual Machines running and the applications running in them which are accessible on internet. He has asked me to send him a weekly report of this work. I am sys admin guy who understands ssh,telnet,ftp,tftp,TCP I am not able to understand what should I write in report.Because all the servers are perfectly running and applications are also running on top of them and I am done with this.So basically from my part I do not have any ssh or ftp to write in a report like this.Can some one give me a link if there is some sample report that I should send.I am not able to understand what do I need to Google for the same.

I have an intermittent issue with with Samba. I can access my samba share with windows xp and vista using windows networking and even by mapping the share to a drive. The problem is that the files and folders disappear inadvertently and I can only access them again if I open the share again from the start with windows explorer. Selinux is disabled and the firewall ports for samba are open. The following software is installed:
samba 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4
samba-client 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4
samba-common 3.0.33-3.15.el5_4

I have Mandriva 2006 on a computer that I regularly backup important directories every night to a flash drive. I use Cron for my backup with scheduled backups nightly. For my script file to do the backup, there is a line that says to copy these directories to /media/sda/backup, so I figure it was copying to the sda named usb device. Well it wasn't. It is copying to the /media/sda/backup directory on my harddrive. But I would like to copy it to a usb device. How do I find out the name of my usb device that I have plugged in?

I am a Mac user since 1988. I recently discovered Linux Ubuntu and love it. So much that I use it about 95% of the time. On the Mac there is an application I use called Superduper which makes a bootable backup to an external USB drive.
Can I do the same kind of thing using the dd command? I use the excellent Cron GUI Scheduled Tasks. I was hoping that maybe I can use that to schedule nightly bootable backups. Is dd the right tool to use? Once the initial backup is done (which I understand can take a long time), does dd do incremental backups after that.
Looking forward to how I can set this up so that I can just set and forget reassured that bootable backups are occurring overnight.

I have a really quick question-I would like to set up some type of scheduled event to back up my entire /home folder to a USB drive.I know about all of the various programs such as simple backup, etc. and have used them before. While on the 32 bit version i haven't problem. I use different profile for the stable and the nigthly versions. Note: I use the binary taken directly from mozilla and update regulary it directly from the browser. On the attachment you can see what should be appear after the update.

I have been looking around online and I am seeing that there are several solutions for doing a nightly automated backup on Linux. I was wondering what people here actually use for doing such and why they use one particular backup method over another.
What I am looking to do is every night (at say 3am) I want my system to backup my 200gig Documents folder to my external hard drive. Does Ubuntu have a tool built in by default to do this or do I need to add something from the repos/online?

I got Thunderbird 5.0a2 Beta because it had the file that runs it in there, but I can't find it anywhere in the Firefox Nightly Build one. There's also no config file in there either, and I don't want to replace my Aurora 6.0a2 Beta with the very unstable Alpha until I try it out. I would try it in the Virtual Machine but it'd take too long to set it all up.

I downloaded the .bz2 file and Archiver extracted it for me. I remember in Slackware you just use installpkg on .bz2 files... Or was it .gz... I forget, anyway, how can I run Nightly-Build? Run-Mozilla.sh opens my Aurora browser.

I've installed Logwatch 7.3.6 via the rpm on my CentOS 5.4 server. The issue is I'm getting basically empty reports from logwatch. The only two sections which have any information are samba and diskspace.
The only default options in the config file I've modified are: Code: print = No output = html I'm suspecting the issue has to do with the fact that the as-logged host name doesn't match my current host name. However, I've tried manually changing this on a few entries so they match but they didn't show up in the report. According to the config file, the default for option HostLimit is "No" -- so Logwatch should not care what hostname it sees in a log file, right?
