Fedora :: Screen Blackout In F11 On Different Systems
Jul 2, 2009
Am I the only one to experience this? A couple times a day I get a screen blackout while I am working at my computers. This is happening both to my Desktop, whose specs you can read in my signature, and to my laptop. The blackout occurs randomly, lasts 1-2 seconds during which I get a black screen and, after that, the screen is restored to its previous state and everything runs fine for hours.... until it happens again. My laptop uses the default SGI drivers; my desktop the proprietary nvidia drivers from rpmfusion. It happens while browsing, editing code and even gaming. No messages in system log seem to be related to this.

In a nutshell: If the computer goes to blank screen (set that way in screensaver settings) I can hit a key and get the unlock dialog. However, if I walk away for longer and come back, I can't get the machine to wake up. It is powered on, but nothing comes up on the screen. I can't get other terminals by using ctrl-alt-FunctionKeys, either. I CAN, though, ssh into the machine from my desktop computer, and that works normally.I've installed 10.04 off of a live CD onto my Toshiba Satellite A45-S250 laptop. I had originally tried upgrading from 9.10 on the machine, however it wouldn't boot after the upgrade. The live CD also originally wouldn't work for me until I used a work around that involved adding "i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa" to the boot command line of the "Install Ubuntu" option of the live CD. This caused the CD to install, and now the laptop works properly.
The computer boots normally now, but on shutdown, the screen does go all "squiggly" before turning off. This doesn't interfere with the shut down or start up, though.I can post whatever logs or such that would help, but would have to be told what is relevant here. I've been using ubuntu on and off on this laptop since sometime in 2005, and have never experienced an issue like this.

What happened to my Fedora 14 KDE system! After messing up my desktop by moving all the option buttons at down of desktop (like the clock, start options button, network signal...), I tried to restore it finding the option that restores the bars, colors, and view mode. I clicked this button restore and a panic happened to the laptop. After that my laptop just restarted and when the system open again, gets to ask the initial password, it seems to open up and start over! And do not want to open only hint rebooting! Gave Blackout! What happened?

Every time I log in, I get 5 alerts. When I check them out, there is nothing to see. Everything is blank. I'm tired of seeing this lousy popup each time I login. How can I fix this? Also, how do I change the systems default keymap to dvorak (before login screen)

A MacBook Pro here (1151A, 1,2?, anyway a 2006 model). Ubuntu 8.04
When the power cable comes out, the laptop blacks out. I mean, it kind of goes into sleep mode, but only with the screen going dark. Anything running keeps running.
I know it is a bug, and I did my homework. I researched it. It usually comes to the point where you need to disable an "event" on "power cable out" in the power management settings of gnome. I did that, but the problem is still there.
I was turning off the computer before, loosing all my work, because there is no way to bring the display back. However recently I discovered two work arounds:
1) Restart X server: CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE (you loose stuff)
2) FN+CTRL+ALT+F7 which takes you back to your desktop, you do not loose anything.

I have been running one computer with Fedora 9 and one with Windows XP Pro. to conserve space, I have moved the Fedora hard drive into the Windows computer (newer). Both are sata drives and each boots completely on its on. I would really like to make it a dual boot system so I can choose which drive to boot without having to open the case and swap the cables around. The Linux disk is readable by the windows OS but not the other way.
Everything I have read about dual-boot is how to do it at installation time. Is there anyway to do it, without reinstalling one of the OS.

There are two Fedora 12 systems which are now refusing to hibernate. The hibernation sequence seems to happen but then things hang indefinitely with a black screen and a blinking cursor, top left. I don't know where to start looking for clues; what do I look for in the logs, could someone please point me to a good hibernate/suspend troubleshooting guide?
One of the systems just recently got out of whack, for no apparent reason; it hibernated great for a couple of years, even as it went through upgrades from Fedora 9. The other stopped hibernating after its F9 -> F10 upgrade. This one lacks non-root hibernation permissions, but when I issue "/usr/sbin/pm-hibernate" as root, it goes through the motions and then hangs at black screen also.

I presently have Ubuntu and Windows XP Pro installed. By using the GRUB loader I can choose which to load.
I would like to install Fedora as a third option, but do not know how this will affect the GRUB and the choices.

I have dual boot on my comp. Windows XP and Fedora 11 Now in both systems time zone is set to Belgrade ( which is my time zone), but when I setup clock in fedora to be, let's say 16.15h, then when I swich to windows it says time is 14.15h. When I setup in windows on 16.15h, and I swich to fedora, it says time is 18.15h. So I can't get accurate time on both systems in no way.

so I get my t410 today. the hdd is 250g with three primary partitions: 1) 1.17g 2) 221g win7os and 3) recovery 9.7g. I plan to install a windows vista, opensuse 11.2 and fedora 12. I know first to shrink the partition to make room. but i still don't know exactly. say, i shrink win7os partition to 40g and create an extended partition of 221-40 =181g, and then add partiton /boot, /swap, /home, /... and a number of partitons for vista and a number of similar partitions for fedora. But I doubt I wouldn't be able to install vista when opensuse installation is done.

I installed Fedora 14 in a dual boot with Windows 7 (Win 7 came preinstalled on my Vaio, I freed up 30 GB on a hard disk drive and installed Fedora in it).The first reboot took me straight to Windows. I could not find a way to get multiple Operating systems, so I tried looking on the net a bit, and installed EasyBCD. This gave me the option of choosing the boot up OS. But when I choose Fedora in the options, the screen changes to GRUB4DOS which lists Fedora and Other as my two boot options.Selecting either one of these options results in Error 22 No partition found.

during the boot process mounting other file systems takes a while. Although it ends up resulting [OK] it was not like this before and it used to be was very fast. I took a look at /etc/fstab file which is posted below, and suspected that devpts is the problem. So I commented it out and reboot, but it wasn't helpful.

I am unable to Install Fedora10 in my system as one of the multiple operating systems and it gets hanged after probing for Hardware devices and so ...I get fedora trademark sought of symbol and even after waiting any amount of time it doesnt go further..neither the keyboard works nor the mouse pointer moves... I am stuck at this screen shown in the installation screenshot...I get this screen however I dont get the options back or next or its that I am unable to see this options on the screen at all and mouse gets hanged and even keyboard doesnt work...
[code]....
Initially after booting with the media it doesnt even prompt me to press any key to boot from CD or Dvd or I get any screen to select the option for the mode of installation like text based installation or graphical installation..it hardly shows me this screen for even a fraction of second as well...
It takes me to the screen
1) Install or upgrade fedora
2) rescue existing installation...
3)
4) Memory test
when I click on install fedora I am taken to the fedora splash screen and nothing goes ahead... I tried in rescue mode as well... In rescue mode it asks me for language selection...keyboard layout... later it doesnt go ahead as well... I have checked the installation media and it confirmed that the installation media is good... I use Redhat 4.1 version and It works fine except for the message drivers/usb/hid.c core message received at :75 while trying to restart shutdown or access a virtual console... Along with Redhat and while trying to install fedora I have windows server 2008,Windows vista on that harddisk...

Having already borked my system once while deciding to nstall Fedora 10 under the influence of a false sense of bravado, alcohol induced, I thought I should ask for a little insight before trying things again. Once I get my system fixed and before consuming alcohol that is.Short version:I thought Id be smart and mount the /home partition I use for openSUSE as /home for Fedora, I mean that why I made /home it own partition right? Well, thatwhen the alcohol took over and I thought I be rilliant(not so much) and just use my SUSE username for Fedora too, since, you know,e already got all my files and settings stored there.
Thus my request for the answer on how to correctly use the same /home partition across multiple OS installations; with the preferred goal of retaining access to email folders, various files, games (WINE) and such no matter what distro Im using. Would it really be as simple as just not using the same user name for more than one distro? What addtional issues does that solve/create

I was just curious for the ATI users out there that are running KDE on Fedora 14 have any of you experienced any performance issues? My systems desktop slows to a crawl when Kwin's compositing is enabled, however in KDE 4.4 there were no issues at all. My desktop I built is a rather modest build just for development nothing too High end on the machine, however KDE and it's effects surely should run. I also use xfce so I switched to that and gave up on KDE 4.5

On Debian, if I want to compile some package X myself, but I don't want to spend time hunting down and installing its dependencies, I can issue the following command:
Code:
apt-get build-dep X
And apt (so long as it knows about package X) will install all the dependencies for me.Does the yum package manager on RedHat-based systems have a similar feature?

I'm dual booting Mac and Fedora 11. My music is on the mac side, and is too large to copy to the Fedora partition. What is the best option for sharing between the two partitions.
I used to copy the itunes folder to public, but that allows anyone access.
What's the best way to do this without allowing complete access?

Is there a way to boot any current kernel without the nolapic flag on ICH8-based intel T7300 systems? This system works fine with the last 2.26 kernel from FC8, but due to EOL of the security updates I tried to install FC11 and FC10. The first sign of trouble is that their installation only works with acpi=off or nolapic options. As those options disable either fan-control or the second cpu-core I consider them undesirable. Is there a recent correctly working kernel available? Or do I have to downgrade to a distribution that uses a 2.26 kernel?

What I'm trying to do at this point is setup VNC so I can remote into the system via my windows xp systems. I have VNC installed on those computer and I was able to get GNOME's remote desktop operating when I log in on level 5 and actually logged into my user account. However, when I'm not logged in on level 5 it will reject connections entirely. Ultimately I want to remote into the system using tightVNC and view the level 3 (command line only) thing, and allow me to telinit - 5 to switch to gui if I need it from VNC on the windows system. This way I don't need a monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged into the server. Right now that's what I'm having to do.
The problem is that it doesn't run in level 3 at all and level 5 (gui mode) doesn't work if i'm not logged into an account. So how can I get this to work at as a constant running server no matter what level and login point i'm at? Ultimately for this Linux admin class I have to setup a working server and I figured I'd get a base setup with VNC support that I could log into from school to work off of instead of having to use the local connection. Once I get VNC working on my network i'm pretty sure I can get it working beyond my local network.
Here's some commandline stuff that may diagnose my issues:
Code:
As you can see I'm having issues with the libstdc++ lib being detected. I have it installed, but apparently not everything is setup properly. I also have an RPM file for VNC and I've tried to install it with the gnome shell but it gives me an error: "Can't install /home/[user]/Download/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm as no transaction" I'm not sure what that means. When I use the command line I get this:
Code:

After preupgrade downloads install media and reboots to start install, I get a dirty file systems error on /dev/sda2, my / partition.I fsck'd sda1,2,3,4,5,6 (all clean) and rebooted, ran preupgrade again and got same error. No other disks are mounted other than internal SSD.wtf is going on here? ;-)More importantly how does one get around this error? Only half-solution I have found on the net for this problem is to set allowDirty=1 in upgrade.py and recreate install.img. Have no preupgraded before so don't want to take any more risks than necessary. Thanks for any workarounds....---------- Post added at 03:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:31 AM ----------Anyone have ideas here? I'd like to avoid yum upgrading as that looks to entail more pain. Why on earth does Anaconda see my /dev/sda2 on "/" as dirty when fsck reports it as clean
