Fedora Installation :: VNC Level 3 Installation - Remote Into The System Via My Windows Xp Systems

Sep 15, 2009

What I'm trying to do at this point is setup VNC so I can remote into the system via my windows xp systems. I have VNC installed on those computer and I was able to get GNOME's remote desktop operating when I log in on level 5 and actually logged into my user account. However, when I'm not logged in on level 5 it will reject connections entirely. Ultimately I want to remote into the system using tightVNC and view the level 3 (command line only) thing, and allow me to telinit - 5 to switch to gui if I need it from VNC on the windows system. This way I don't need a monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged into the server. Right now that's what I'm having to do.

The problem is that it doesn't run in level 3 at all and level 5 (gui mode) doesn't work if i'm not logged into an account. So how can I get this to work at as a constant running server no matter what level and login point i'm at? Ultimately for this Linux admin class I have to setup a working server and I figured I'd get a base setup with VNC support that I could log into from school to work off of instead of having to use the local connection. Once I get VNC working on my network i'm pretty sure I can get it working beyond my local network.

Here's some commandline stuff that may diagnose my issues:

Code:

As you can see I'm having issues with the libstdc++ lib being detected. I have it installed, but apparently not everything is setup properly. I also have an RPM file for VNC and I've tried to install it with the gnome shell but it gives me an error: "Can't install /home/[user]/Download/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm as no transaction" I'm not sure what that means. When I use the command line I get this:

Code:

Fedora Installation :: Unable To Install In System As One Of The Multiple Operating Systems

Mar 13, 2009

I am unable to Install Fedora10 in my system as one of the multiple operating systems and it gets hanged after probing for Hardware devices and so ...I get fedora trademark sought of symbol and even after waiting any amount of time it doesnt go further..neither the keyboard works nor the mouse pointer moves... I am stuck at this screen shown in the installation screenshot...I get this screen however I dont get the options back or next or its that I am unable to see this options on the screen at all and mouse gets hanged and even keyboard doesnt work...

[code]....

Initially after booting with the media it doesnt even prompt me to press any key to boot from CD or Dvd or I get any screen to select the option for the mode of installation like text based installation or graphical installation..it hardly shows me this screen for even a fraction of second as well...

It takes me to the screen

1) Install or upgrade fedora
2) rescue existing installation...
3)
4) Memory test

when I click on install fedora I am taken to the fedora splash screen and nothing goes ahead... I tried in rescue mode as well... In rescue mode it asks me for language selection...keyboard layout... later it doesnt go ahead as well... I have checked the installation media and it confirmed that the installation media is good... I use Redhat 4.1 version and It works fine except for the message drivers/usb/hid.c core message received at :75 while trying to restart shutdown or access a virtual console... Along with Redhat and while trying to install fedora I have windows server 2008,Windows vista on that harddisk...

Ubuntu Installation :: Remote Install To A System Currently Running Windows ?

Aug 10, 2010

Does anyone know of any way (preferably fully documented/tutorialed, but even theoretical would be great) to remotely install Ubuntu to a machine currently running Windows...

We have 8 machines powering a digital signage system. The machines are not physically accessible (without extreme difficulty) and are currently running windows XP with a VNC server for control.

I want them to run Ubuntu instead. Is there any way anyone can think of that I can do this? My only thought so far is WUBI...but once it boots into Ubuntu ssh isn't installed by default and vnc isn't enabled by default so I wouldn't be able to control it.

Also I'd really like to completely wipe out Windows and use only Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub And Other Boot Systems (Windows)

May 1, 2010

I have Win7 and ubuntu installed on the same PC. Win7 was installed first, after I installed GRUB from Ubuntu, Win7 is not listed as a second option to boot. FYI, On the same PC I had Win7 and Debian (before changing from Debian to Ubuntu) and GRUB from Debian was showing Win7 as second option for boot. Ubuntu was installed on the same partitions as Debian. (For Win7 I have 2 partitions one 100M-system reserved and one 30G; both on NTFS). I have:
Linux ubuntu 2.6.28-18-generic #60-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 04:40:52 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
How to set /boot/grub/menu.ls file to add Win7!
(I will do also a fresh install for Ubuntu 64Bit)

Fedora Installation :: ASRock ION 330 And F10 (Run Level 5)

Jul 27, 2009

I have recently purchased an asrock ion 330. I have done a fresh install of fedora 10. All initially appears fine. When I modify etc/inittab to run level 5 I start getting problems. When fedora boots tty1 never gets to the login prompt. It stops with 'fuse init (api version 7.9). I don't get the desired graphical login. If I reset to run level 3 it boots fine To the text console and I can login and startx with no problems.

Fedora Installation :: Shrinking Current Windows System?

Oct 31, 2010

I may require some aid in installing Fedora 13 (via a burned CD iso image) on a double boot system with Windows 7 as default. After going through the keyboard mapping and time-zone selection, I had the option of shrinking my Windows to accommodate Fedora, which I chose. The following selection appeared:

/dev/sda1.ntfs 0MB
/dev/sda2.ntfs 0MB
/dev/sda3.ntfs 0MB

If I try to decrease any of them, this communication materialises: Error: new size same as old size. So I canceled the installation set-up and rebooted Windows. I'm quite new to alternative operating systems (having used Windows all my life) and would appreciate a concise and legible answer.

Fedora Installation :: How To Install Multiple Systems

May 8, 2010

so I get my t410 today. the hdd is 250g with three primary partitions: 1) 1.17g 2) 221g win7os and 3) recovery 9.7g. I plan to install a windows vista, opensuse 11.2 and fedora 12. I know first to shrink the partition to make room. but i still don't know exactly. say, i shrink win7os partition to 40g and create an extended partition of 221-40 =181g, and then add partiton /boot, /swap, /home, /... and a number of partitons for vista and a number of similar partitions for fedora. But I doubt I wouldn't be able to install vista when opensuse installation is done.

Fedora Installation :: Way To Get Multiple Operating Systems

Nov 22, 2010

I installed Fedora 14 in a dual boot with Windows 7 (Win 7 came preinstalled on my Vaio, I freed up 30 GB on a hard disk drive and installed Fedora in it).The first reboot took me straight to Windows. I could not find a way to get multiple Operating systems, so I tried looking on the net a bit, and installed EasyBCD. This gave me the option of choosing the boot up OS. But when I choose Fedora in the options, the screen changes to GRUB4DOS which lists Fedora and Other as my two boot options.Selecting either one of these options results in Error 22 No partition found.

Fedora Installation :: Does Live USB Creator Create A Working System For Windows 7?

May 12, 2010

Before going too far it may be simplest to answer the question "Does Live USB Creator create a working system for Windows 7?" If not then don't bother reading further. I have installed Live USB Creator on a 32-bit Windows 7 computer but when I run it I can't for the life of me get it to recognize any type of drive. I've read and tried the instructions of using the command line with the --force [drive]: but that has no effect Maybe I am misunderstanding this whole program. From what I read about it, this program will create a working Windows system, place it on a USB stick and then run Windows on a different computer. In my application I would like to run it on my work computer which has Windows XP. If this application should work then will I have complete access to all my computer drives and files and the network/internet? I imagine I would need to install all necessary programs so that I could use them in Windows 7 and would I need to install those programs on the USB stick or could they be on a local hard drive?

Fedora Installation :: Reuse The /home Partition On Multi-boot Systems?

May 5, 2009

Having already borked my system once while deciding to nstall Fedora 10 under the influence of a false sense of bravado, alcohol induced, I thought I should ask for a little insight before trying things again. Once I get my system fixed and before consuming alcohol that is.Short version:I thought Id be smart and mount the /home partition I use for openSUSE as /home for Fedora, I mean that why I made /home it own partition right? Well, thatwhen the alcohol took over and I thought I be rilliant(not so much) and just use my SUSE username for Fedora too, since, you know,e already got all my files and settings stored there.

Thus my request for the answer on how to correctly use the same /home partition across multiple OS installations; with the preferred goal of retaining access to email folders, various files, games (WINE) and such no matter what distro Im using. Would it really be as simple as just not using the same user name for more than one distro? What addtional issues does that solve/create

I have also checked with other run levels, it works fine. I have also gone thru run level 3 and then used the command "startx" but still its not working and the system stopped automatically by making the fan speed up to a high. Primary memory 2 GB.

Fedora Installation :: Boot Any Current Kernel Without The Nolapic Flag On ICH8-based Intel T7300 Systems?

Jun 16, 2009

Is there a way to boot any current kernel without the nolapic flag on ICH8-based intel T7300 systems? This system works fine with the last 2.26 kernel from FC8, but due to EOL of the security updates I tried to install FC11 and FC10. The first sign of trouble is that their installation only works with acpi=off or nolapic options. As those options disable either fan-control or the second cpu-core I consider them undesirable. Is there a recent correctly working kernel available? Or do I have to downgrade to a distribution that uses a 2.26 kernel?

Fedora Servers :: Convert A Running System To RAID Level 1?

Sep 30, 2009

I was recently requested to try and convert a running system to RAID level 1. I did not succeed in this task. However, I am still interested in accomplishing this task in a test environment. What I did was create a RAID device with a device missing e.g.

mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb2

Once the RAID was up and running I created the /etc/mdadm.conf file so that it would activate the RAID device on boot. Once the device was created I copied all the data from the running root filesystem to the /dev/md0 device. The only directory that I didn't copy was the /proc directory. When I rebooted the machine I had a kernel panic and the system couldn't find /dev/root. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could provide some information/tips regarding the problem.

I'm a student and I'm already able to access the university's Linux machines from Windows using a combination of Putty and Xwindows with Cygwin. The computers I'm ssh-ing into have Ubuntu on them. Is there a way to remote access them to get the entire desktop? Like having a virtual OS window, but be using a remotely accessed computer. Is there anyway to do this or should I just settle with the X11 forwarding through Putty? Thanks!

EDIT - Just wanted to mention that these are public lab computers so I can't just have myself logged in with a remote desktop set up and waiting. I'd need something that allows me to log in remotely as well on the server without needing to to change what's on the computer there.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.
