with the same router, same ISP, same connection basically, on Fedora I'm getting on a maximum of 60 mbps. I also get moments where no pages will load, but network manager will report that nothing is wrong and that the connection is 100%.
View 13 RepliesI am running Karmic AMD64 on a homebrew desktop PC, but I also previously had this trouble on 32 bit with different hardware and on Ubuntu 9.04 and 8.10. The router is now an ADSL+ Thomson TG585n supplied by O2 and badged O2 Wireless box III. The PC has a direct ethernet connection. The router was replaced by O2 when the problem first appeared, as the Wireless box II was suspect. However, I still have the problem and it is getting more frequent.
The symptoms are these: I generally shut down the PC each night, and only fire it up again when needed, which is usually the following evening, but it remains on for most of the day at the weekend. Very often when started, I find I have no connectivity to the internet, and cannot retrieve my emails. Strangely though, the Skype connection is still present and works, although not every time. My wife's laptop is connected over the wireless link - and that STILL WORKS! Sometimes I can connect to the router interface, but sometimes I can't. I've never lost the connection while the PC is running.
I have tried everything I can find in the router (when I can connect) and also in the Systemreferences:Network Connections and also in System:Administration:Network Tools, but can't find anything that helps. A re-boot of the PC doesn't help. A re-boot of the router doesn't help. A hard reset of the router on it's own doesn't help. The only solution to restore the connection is a hard reset of the router (using the recessed reset switch in the back) followed by a re-boot of the PC.
Since the Skype service remains working, and the lights on the router remain normal and wireless service doesn't fail, I think this has to be a DNS server problem. In the previous release, Jaunty, I changed the DNS service to OpenDNS within Ubuntu, overriding the router's settings. That seemed to help a great deal, although there was still the occasional outage which might have been another cause. I can't find anything in the GUI interface in Karmic that will let me do this, and I can't now remember how I did that in Jaunty.
I am running Linux Mint Isadora 9 and recently installed a wireless USB adapter. After installing RT3070 drivers for my RT2070 card I got everything working and life was good. Now, all of the sudden I am having a world of problems connecting to the internet. I can connect to my AP fine, but I cannot access the internet. If I attempt to ping my AP by IP address I get severe packet loss. I cannot ping my AP by url [URL] at all so Im guessing there are some DNS issues as well.

I have been using Debian for three or so years now. Not sure what all the difference it makes, but I'm installing Debian Squeeze on a Sony Vaio desktop computer... With an nVidia GeForce 5200 which works perfectly in other computers and on the same computer when dual booting with Windows XP. I've tried and installed several times already to no avail. When I fresh install just the standard system, no graphic desktop, no Xorg, no servers, no nothing, just the standard system, command line only. When I do the initial boot on this blessed computer, part way through the boot process my monitor shuts off and it says frequency out of range (thats a message from the monitor itself, not the computer or debian).
The same install process I've executed countless times. I thought it was a dependency issue, problem with X perhaps. I can install lenny, but not squeeze. When booting in single user mode, it seems like it craps out either during or right after it loads or does something with the "drm" - you know how during the boot script, the machine "flashes" the fonts and the screen blips... its seems to me like that's where its happening at. The monitor works just fine, I really don't think that's the problem. But it is frustrating and I have no clue where to go about finding what the issue is if I can't see whats going on.
I am using Fedora 12. I am able to connect to my wireless network (95% of the time at least) on start-up automatically, however after anywhere between a few seconds to a few minutes later it cuts out and will not reconnect. It appears to be that whenever it finds next doors network it disconnects from mine! I have set the channel to 9, and my neighbor's is on 1. I have a USB N+ adapter, and a G+ MIMO PCI card, however do not know which is being used to connect with.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy mouse and trackpad button control is severely impaired in 11.3, KDE 4.5.1 (or .2) using Compiz. Gnome works fine. XFCE has some problems. The mouse control of window features is sometimes limited to one window with the rest of the desktop not responding to mouse actions. Popping up a second window from an app causes the mouse control to be completely lost. The issue leaves KDE effectively broken having only keyboard control. With some ESC key hits and using right mouse button to close one app (from the panel), I can move focus to another app but mouse control within the app is non-existent. Moving windows or raising or lowering doesn't work either. Sometimes, the GUI captures the mouse click but does not recognize the active App and applies it to objects sitting on the desktop screen underneath.
I've reverted partially back to the 11.3 installation DVD then reload updates and then moved to stable release of 4.5, then went back to the 4.5 factory. All failed to correct the problem. I removed .kde/.kde4 files and this did not help. What is wrong with my system? Also installed the latest kernel of the repos then reverted back to 2.6.34.7-0.3 [x64]. [very frustrating, been using Suse/KDE for >7 yrs, this one has me stumped]
I am not sure of which LibreOffice version I am using because I can't open the ****ed program. So here's what's happening: I start LibreOffice, my screen looks unusual (it tiles a section of the screen that is the same size as the LibreOffice window (I think) across both of my monitors) and my system locks up. I am unable to use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Ctrl+Alt+F1-F8, or any other keyboard combination. No mouse click registers and the cursor acts as if the mouse is in one location (if the system locked up with my cursor over a link, the cursor stays like that) BUT the mouse still moves. Also, if I am playing music when it locks up, I can continue to hear the music and the music continues to shuffle through my playlist.
I am able to access my machine normally through ssh and the only way I've been able to fix this is to hold down the power button or pull the power. I have not identified what action causes the system to lock up, the only thing I've noticed is that LibreOffice is open every time this happens (It's happened no matter if Writer or Calc is open). The system almost always locks up upon startup of LibreOffice if the recovery window pops up, otherwise it locks up at some point during my LibreOffice session no matter what. I have not touched LibreOffice on my other machine's openSUSE installation, so I don't know how reproducible the problem is. Let me know if you need any extra information or if there are any diagnostic commands I could run.
Sometimes (not always, mind you), several applications, lag. A lot. For instance, Blender 3D is entirely unusable and don't get me started on Fallout 3. Other examples include Minecraft (Not the Windows .exe but the .jar) and XMoto. So I assume it has something to do with the graphics driver or the likes. For some reason, Compiz still works fine. The only way I can fix those lags is to reset X, which is not exactly a good way, especially because this happens to shut down uShare and thus cancels my movie stream. So..

But, there is a severe lag in the image (audio does NOT lag .. so makes using any on line VERY hard to do!) Is there some way to get this thing to work properly, or am I going to have to wait on 10.04 to see if that works? (hate to use the old saw of "it works in Windows", but it DOES on my Windows machine .. just that I want it to work on the Linux box as that is my primary box and used for almost all on line activities.)

As it was just after Christmas I thought it must be down, for upgrades or maintenance etc. I later tried to go to Freebsd.org; same error. I've been having a small number of other websites give the same error. I thought nothing of this until I tried it on my wife's macpro. I could log onto all the websites I wanted to and none gave any indication of having been down. Both boxes are on the same adsl connection. I still can't access internode or freebsd on 10.10 yet have been able to access every website on OSX. Now, I was only looking at them for info but am worried I won't be able to access something important. (so far everything I 'need' is working)

I was running Debian Etch for a while and upgraded to Debian Lenny months ago. After the upgrade I began to notice that I was losing time pretty severely on the desktop clock (On the order of more than 1 second every minute!).I recently noticed an online game lagging exactly every 5 minutes and finally pinpointed it to this timekeeping script I wrote. I would like to fix the time drift issue on this PC properly now but have not found any helpful documentation online yet.

Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message

Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
My OS is Ubuntu net-book lucid linx (newest version not sure which) video card is intel chipset (made 2 years ago) I had just changed the graphics effects to extra and reboot. We observed that performance quickly degraded as the box became loaded. For instance, a lonely task may took "t", but when running 24 of them at the same time (fully loaded box), it may took 2 to 3 times longer. From some test we did (tinkering with BIOS, moving memory modules, etc) we came to the conclusion the problem was due to a terrible memory managment. Finally we solved the problem by recompiling the kernel and taking the .config file from OpenSuse. Thus, there must be something to be tweaked in the standard Slackware .config file

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

It's not my router because it works fine on my sister's netbook (which is also running ubuntu) and it worked fine when I was running windows? I'm not very advanced with linux so you know. I do not observe this behavior when operating my laptop under Windows 7. Following some suggestions given in this forum , I uninstalled networkmanager and installed wicd. We installed Fedora on top by my WindowsXP, we have updated the connection information with the addresses, but can't access any website. Connection Manager says we're connected. We created a new wired network connection, but it doesn't appear in the choices.
I installed Ubuntu recently and had a similar problem, only mine was that my computer was competing with hers (something to do with DHCP). The solution was to alter my /etc/network/interfaces file, but I also screwed with settings in the "Network Connections" thing, pretty much altering a connection my /etc/network/interfaces file seemed to have made. My problem was only solved as far as I cared. I wonder if this is the same problem.
On the other hand, we attempted connecting the Fedora box directly to a modem and still no internet, so I believe they are entirely unrelated. But I wanted to include this for completeness in case they are.
I have the following nasty issue:I am using fedora 12 and I use vpn for working remote.When I browse the internet the speed is very slow!even when I do a yum update it downloads the packages with max 100kb. if I drop the vpn connection I download the packages with 1Mbdo you know what the problem could be? i created the vpn connection using the network manager...it is a regular pptp connection for the vpn!

Also the "apply to all subfolders and files" doesn't work. Also trying to set the SELinux rule to "userspace" doesn't do anything else. Basically i was trying to do just that transfer my $home folder over to fedora but now it's being a bit odd towards me with making everything require root access and not letting me read/write all files and folders within them.
