Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Internet Dropping Out?

Feb 17, 2010

This is weird. I will be working on the internet with several tabs open and all of a sudden the pages won't update. I can't go anywhere - it's like I lost the connection. I am also downloading bittorrents with uTorrent running with WIne and that doesn't seem to be affected. I also have gPodder and I tried to update podcasts with that and it also hangs up as if it can't connect. The only way I have been able to solve this has been to reboot (which I just did).

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Dropping But Not Windows?

Feb 25, 2010

Having major wireless issues with Linux. I have DSL and had a Westell router/modem combo and my wireless would stay up for no more than 15 mins at a time even while idle, and in order to get wireless back I have to reboot and then I can get another 5-15 mins of wireless before it drops. When it drops it prompts me for my wep key and wont accept it yet if I reboot it catches the wireless right away for a very short period. So I go out today and spend over $100 bucks on a Netgear dgn2000 thinking it would fix the problem... Nope I am still in the same boat as I was with the Westell.

I am not seeing my router model listed under the wiki link sticky.. (Edit) thought I installed ndiswrapper, it was it was in my downloads anyway I can't install it I get the following error (Not a valid driver .inf file.)I have tried 3 distros and have the same problem. I went to Netgears site in search of Linux drivers but all I found was the firmware updates. Could some one please shed some light on what I need to do to get up and running? This is a new laptop and I am pretty annoyed with myself for formatting it out of the box rather than reading up a bit more about Linux (been using for one month).I don't understand it Ubuntu 10.9 ran wireless perfect on my older system, (full install) and I have no trouble with my lap top that is running Windows.I really hope to get this resolved I really enjoy Linux and I don't want this to be the one handicap which would force me back to Windows, that would be very upsetting

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Keeps Dropping At School

Oct 5, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop with broadcom BCM4322 wireless card.Basically what keeps happening is my wireless will stop working, then network manager will notify me that I have lost signal. It will then try and reconnect, but it never seems to be successful. The only way I can get the wireless to work again is if I disable wireless then re-enable wireless (or do a complete system restart).

However, it does not seem to have this problem at home. The only difference I can think of from home and school is either encryption types (the university uses WEP, I use WPA) or the fact that at home there is only one access point and at university there are multiple access points all with the same SSID.Anyone have any idea how to make my laptop stop dropping connection all the time?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Won't Reconnect After Dropping?

May 26, 2011

I'm having a problem with the wireless on my Asus EEEPC 1000HE using Ubuntu 110.04. Digging into the laptop forums, it says there is a problem with wireless on some models of the 1000HE, but it is not the same wireless device and my wireless problem doesn't seem as bad as listed, so I think it's a different problem. But my problem is that if wireless drops for any reason, it will not start working again unless I either reboot the computer or click the wireless icon in the systray, click disconnect so it stops flashing (like it's trying to reconnect) and then suspend my computer or log off and back on. And it only does the latter because I added a file located at /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module with the one line that reads SUSPEND_MODULES="rt2800pci" (my wireless driver) So that one line seems to cause wireless to get a fresh connection after suspending (or something. I'm not a very advanced LInux user). I've tried running the command "sudo/etc/init.d/networking restart", but that does nothing for me. I'm not sure what other command to try to see if can fix it.[URL]

Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi Dropping And Dropping Speed

Feb 25, 2010

As soon as i'm starting to copy a large file enough file (>700Mb) to my ubuntu box (connected to an Asus router via wifi) from a Windows 7 client (connected to router via ethernet cable) i get a dramatic drop in speed. upload starts at 1,0Mb/sec with a ping to ubuntu box at <1ms, and in 2 minutes it drops to 200kb/sec with a ping of over 1000ms! The ping increases with every second in a linear progression.

To exlude router as a possible problem copying to a windows 7 notebook connected to router via wifi results in an average of 2,7Mb/sec with an average ping of 150ms.

Ubuntu Networking :: Thinkpad W500 Wireless Connection Keeps Dropping

Oct 27, 2010

I have a Thinkpad W500 with:

Code:
Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5300
I have Ubuntu 10.04 32bit installed:

Code:
Linux dani-laptop 2.6.32-25-generic #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 19:48:22 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

It has been working fine since I installed 10.04 but recently (end of last week I think) it stared dropping the wireless connection very often. So it will disconnect and reconnect, but I can't seem to find a pattern, sometimes it goes for hours without an issue and sometimes it does it several times in a row. Below is an extract of syslogs from when this happens. But not sure if what I need is there... the only weird thing I can see is:

Ubuntu Networking :: Losing (dropping) Wireless Connection After Changing MAC Addr?

Aug 8, 2011

Sorry if this has already been solved;answered anywhere else - I tried looking it up but to no avail. The problem persists & the hints I found around the forum did not provide a solution to the case, neither other net solutions i looked up I run Winblows at the lab and sometimes take my Ubuntu PC with me. There is an open Wireless network where they set MAC permission, and there's no pwd to access. It so should be fairly easy to change m MAC and access it, right! No. I run ifconfig and macchange, successfully change my MAC addr BUT the connection drops! Then if I change it back (MAC to my original address) it goes back online. And yes, I shut down the service -- "ifconfig wlan0 down" and then up..WHAT ON EARTH am I doing wrong??? No webpages touch this 'trouble-frigging-shooting instance!

Ubuntu :: Random Reboot Shutdown In Karmic 9.10?

Jan 19, 2010

I recently migrated from Hardy 8.04 LTS (32) to Karmic 9.10 (32) so that the restricted ATI drivers and CCC would work correctly - that part is basically fine.

The problem for the past couple of weeks has been Karmic randomly shutting down, and rebooting the system after 1 or 2 hours up-time.

Why would this be happening, it was fine for the first few weeks after installing Karmic.

My system currently consists of the following;
Gigabyte MA790FX-DS5 mainboard - Jan '08
AMD 3.0Ghz Phenom II X4 945 CPU - Oct '09
4GB DDR2 Kingston HyperX RAM (1066 MHz) - Jul '09
Sapphire ATI HD5770 1GB GDDR5 video - Dec '09
Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 640 watt power supply - Nov '09
Cooler Master Centurion 5 CAC-T05 case - Jan '08
1 pata 500 GB, 3 sata 500 GB & 1 sata 640 GB drives
2 DVD burners (Pioneer and LG)
2 x 19" (4:3) Samsung SyncMaster 943N LCD monitors

I used to have lmsensors working with the Athlon 2.8GHz dual core in Hardy, but they wouldn't work with the new Phenom 3.0 GHz 945 CPU in Hardy (and they still won't work in Karmic).

Th upshot is that I don't have cpu, system, or graphics temps; nor do I have any fan speeds, so I don't know what temps or fan speeds my system is running without rebooting into BIOS (which isn't much good as I really need to know what's happening when I'm using the OS itself).

Does anyone know what could be causing this random shut-down/reboot problem?

Ubuntu Networking :: 64 Bit Bcm4311 Wireless Random Kernel Panics?

Sep 22, 2010

I have this weird issue which only appears when I am using 64 bit Ubuntu. Every now and then my laptop seems to go into a kernel panic (system unresponsive, numlock and scrollock lights flash repetitively) only when I am using the broadcom wireless. I can connect to my wireless router and use the internet and local network, but eventually, kablamo, crash, bang, boom. The only way out of the crash is to power off completely. After repowering, the wireless network is fine until the next crash. There does not seem to be a pattern or time period to cause this crash either. I have purged network manager(which I couldn't get to use my wireless) and am using wicd, which allows me to connect wirelessly.

Jan 9, 2010

System: T400 notebook, intel and ATI graphics, only intel graphics enabled. 9.10 64-bit, whole disc encryption. New install. My system recently started crashing periodically. At first there was no problem. There is no particular program that causes a crash. I havent edited any configurations. The most recent packages I installed were some data recovery packages and Gkrellm. Is there any way to find the time of installation for each package?

I upgraded to kernel 2.6.32 Ive been looking at the syslogs and before every crash there are several lines of:

Jan 9 20:46:24 username wpa_supplicant[1677]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Jan 9 20:48:24 username wpa_supplicant[1677]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS

Ubuntu :: Ubu Karmic 2 Lucid Upgrade Now Random Freezes / Fix It?

Apr 26, 2011

1st post @ LQ. Ubuntu user since 2007ish. Lots of PC experience... now vexed by upgrade from 9.10 Karmic to 10.04LTS Lucid.

The problem: random freezes whenever I boot into Lucid as user through usual Grub menu. The freeze sequence is: 1- screen stops, 2- mouse pointer freeze w/ no effect on click but moves freely and keyboard is useless, 3- screen blacks out for about 30 seconds and then returns but is unusable and 4- constant HDD activity for about 5-10 seconds. I have waited several minutes for a recovery of some sort but no dice. I reboot via on/off or reset button. Ubu deletes 2 inodes and then I'm off and running again.

If I boot through the recovery console there are no problems at all. The recovery console sequence: 1- select recovery from Grub menu, 2- at recovery menu select drop to root command prompt, 3- give root password, 4- enter 'gdm' at console prompt, finish boot up in my only user desktop (not root.)

I have not been able to find any log files that show an error message, but I'm not so tech oriented that I would necessarily know one if I saw one. Through many hours of browsing posts describing Lucid problems @ UbuntuForums (one of which has over 1,000 responses) I have found my '.xsession-errors' file (attached) is full of data.code...

Ubuntu Networking :: Random Wireless Disconnects - 9.1/Toshiba/Intel 3945abg?

Feb 22, 2010

I have my laptop dual booted between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. In Ubuntu I randomly lose connection to the wireless network. It always works fine when I first boot into Ubuntu but after a while my wireless connection will go down. The signal strength meter will go to zero bars and the black popup message will appear that my wireless connection has disconnected. At first, if I just wait a bit, the connection will come back. However, after about 4 or 5 times of doing this it will then ask me for my password, and inputting the password does not reconnect me to the AP. I am finally forced to reboot. Then it works OK for a while again and the cycle repeats.

It works fine in Windows7 all day, every day. I have the Release Candidate of Windows7 so it's going to expire soon. I would really prefer to make Ubuntu my everyday OS on this laptop rather than pay for a Windows7 license but I cannot tolerate a flaky wireless connection.

I had 8.1 on this laptop at one point and I never had any problems with the wireless then, that I can remember. I had no Ubuntu for a while but then I came back with the 9.1 and was loving it until the wireless problem reared it's ugly head.

I have a laptop hp6720s with network controller: Intel corporation PRO/Wireless 3945 ABG [Golan] Network connection (rev 02), dual boot vista/ubuntu 9.10, fully updated (kernel 2.6.31-17). (Quick connection without any failure).

But today the internet was very slow and wireless starts to connect and disconnects intermitently, doing it unusable. This was what occured when i upgraded from jaunty to karmic and used the network manager from gnome, but then i fix the problem installing wicd. Now wicd behaves in the same way as gnome-network-manager. If i connect directly the computer to the router by wire, i have internet and everything works perfectly. How i can fix the wireless?. How i can do it works with ubuntu 9.10 and?.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Repeatedly Stops Working On HP Pavilion/Intel 4965AG/Karmic

Feb 9, 2010

My wireless LAN connection on this machine occasionally stops working. The network traffic bar shows periodic very small transmissions but the failure of all network dependent applications (Firefox, package manager, etc.) indicates to me that the machine is no longer talking to the net. I can fix it by reselecting my home network in nm-applet from the drop-down list. This causes the machine to disconect, reconnect and all is well for some random period of time thereafter. Here's some data:I'm running an HP Pavillion laptop.

Code:

~$ lspci | grep Wireless
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

Code:

~$ lsmod | grep iwl
iwlagn 124768 0
iwlcore 134820 1 iwlagn
mac80211 243496 2 iwlagn,iwlcore

[code]....

I don't know if this is related or not, but a couple of months ago I unsuccessfully attempted to share a hotel's wired Internet connection over my wireless card. I may have hosed some settings or it could be unrelated. The "unknown interface" portion of the restart attempt is interesting but I don't know enough to fix it.
