Fedora Networking :: Accessing Internet After Adding Fedora To A WindowsXP

We installed Fedora on top by my WindowsXP, we have updated the connection information with the addresses, but can't access any website. Connection Manager says we're connected. We created a new wired network connection, but it doesn't appear in the choices.
I installed Ubuntu recently and had a similar problem, only mine was that my computer was competing with hers (something to do with DHCP). The solution was to alter my /etc/network/interfaces file, but I also screwed with settings in the "Network Connections" thing, pretty much altering a connection my /etc/network/interfaces file seemed to have made. My problem was only solved as far as I cared. I wonder if this is the same problem.
On the other hand, we attempted connecting the Fedora box directly to a modem and still no internet, so I believe they are entirely unrelated. But I wanted to include this for completeness in case they are.
I recently installed Fedora 11 onto my computer on top of Linux Mint. Originally I was using Mint's bootloader, but I'm ditching Mint soon for another OS so I'm migrating to Fedora's bootloader to make the transition easier. For a while I couldn't get Mint to appear on Fedora's Grub menu, but during that time I could still access the internet on Fedora. However, once I successfully added Mint to Fedora's grub menu, the wireless suddenly stopped working on Fedora (though it still works on Mint.) I can connect to the network on Fedora but it gives me the awesome "host does not exist" message when I try to ping anything. Any insight as to why this might have happened after I managed to successfully boot Mint from the Fedora boot menu?
If i boot to fedora and boot back to windows i can no longer can access network/internet on windows! It says the network is disconnected. The cable is connected properly and this message is happening only because i booted to fedora 12 previously before booting into windows.
I did not have this problem with fedora 10, 9. recently i did an upgrade to 12 and this is one of the problems among the many other i am facing. In order to get internet back on windows i have to shutdown the pc and wait for a while and power on again to get network back on windows. the same issues exists on windowsXP64 and vista32.
I am connected to the internet like this pc->Realtek RTL8168D(P)/811D(P)->linksys router connected to pc by network cable --> DSL modem. the router connects to DSL by ppoe
My router's ip is 192.168.0.1. usually if i type this on my browser it will take me to the routers configuration. But a previous boot to fedora and i cant even access my router. its like it says "network disconnected".
why is fedora messing up my network connection? its pathetic that there is no OA in linux and it makes my life miserable.
Is it possible to access windows network printers from a VirtualBox WindowsXP client running under Ubuntu 10.10 host? The networking type is NAT. Would Bridged Networking solve the problem? If so, is there a tutorial on how to set up bridged networking for virutual box?
I am using fedora 8 . Recently i have bring a DLINK ( DGE-528T ) LAN card 100/1000 that is giving problem . It is detecting so i have given ip address to that card and restarted services but its is not accessing internet.
I am using x86_64 fedora 12 along with WinXP. I install ed windows Xp first and then F12. I can boot into F12 without any problems. But when i try to boot into windows, a blank screen appears with a blinking cursor on the top left position.
Today I noticed my sdl modem flashing away when I had no internet access programs active as far as I was aware. I did a 'ps ax' to see what was running. I saw nothing that warranted internet access. I didn't recognize the gvfsd-computer process and tried finding documentation about it on my system. I began to feel uncomfortable when I couldn't find anything showing what it was. Finally, I killed the process and the internet access immediately stopped. Research on the net showed that gvfsd-computer is a file browser. I find this very disturbing. Why was a file browser accessing my disk drive (the light was flashing) and why was it accessing the internet without my requesting such an action?
I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the second processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?
I am using windowsxp in one pc and another running on fedora 11,,, i develop socket based applications which run on fedora linux. But i need to test these applications with a software running on windows xp. i found that i could not connect to socket of the application running on fedora from an application running on windows. i am not able to identify the problem. should i try any other linux distribution?
After installation of Windows XP in the disk where Linux was installed in another partition the GRUB menu allowing to choose operation system to load dissapeared. This menu previously appeared right after switching the computer on. But after installation of Windows in the partition intended for it only WindowsXP is loaded automatically once I switch on my computer. But switching it on with Linux rescure cd-disk results in loading my ordinary Linux from hard drive. This shows that Linux is not destroyed at the loading of Windows, but just made unreachable. Possibly installation program for Windows has destroyed GRUB or some of its files. Does somebody know how to restore normal functioning of GRUB?

I am using Scientific Linux 4, which is derivative of RedHat Enterprise Linux.I have currently installed WindowsXP SP3. But previously I had the same problem with SP2 at the same computer and the same partition. At that time I needed to reinstall the full Linux after installation of Windows. This was not a problem, since this was right after its purchase and there was nothing useful. But recently I needed to re-install Windows, now it is SP3. And unfortunately I have received expected result: Windows have been installed, but it made unreachable Linux. Now I need to find a way to solve the problem with fixing access through GRUB to all systems without reinstallation of Linux, since it will be too time consuming to pass all its adjustments and loading which I need.
Probably the problem is typical and well-known. Grub, Linux in one partition and installation or re-installation of WindowsXP in another partition. How to repire GRUB and entries to all systems after that?
I have set up a FTP server in my home (FileZilla) and everything works how it is supposed to. I understand that port forwarding is required and can easily set that up. My question is what IP address do I use to connect to it when I am outside of my home network. Do I use the one my ISP gave me? And how do I figure out what that is? Could my ISP be using NAT that could be messing things up for me? Could there any other configurations that I need to perform ? Also do ISP's frown upon home ftp servers? (USA)
I have dual boot Fedora 8/XP. My net seams to be moody only in my fedora sometimes I have wait as long as 30 sec for the page to load where as in my windows it's fine no such delay. This happens randomly yesterday night I had tough time accessing this forum (in addition to other sites) now it's working fine.
Loving my new Fedora system and the steady march towards making a MS free house but I have a problem. I need to be able to connect to my company server via VPN and then initiate a terminal server connection. Two clicks on XP but I have no idea what to use now. As soon as I have this down I can remove my XP partition forever as I have everything else I need daily working like a charm.
I am trying to add a third network card (an Intel gigabit card) to my Fedora server to setup a static route to another network. When I restart the server or the network service eth2 fails to start and shows the error below: # Bringing up interface eth2: SIOCGIFFLAGS: No such device So I did a ifconfig �a and see that there is a eth2_rename shown in the list. How do I get eth2 to load correctly so I can set the static route I need?
I have never seen this before but to connect to the internet either wired or wireless I have to connect to a broadband connection as well. I am currently using wireless; I connect to ISP with wireless but in order to access the internet I have connect to the wireless connection through my broadband connection(This is where I enter a user name and password.). I'm not sure why this is, I have always just plugged an Ethernet cable in and the computer just knew I guess.
I am using ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso that I had put onto a USB drive. It booted fine, but when I tried accessing the internet I couldn't. I was able to connect to the ISP, but I couldn't find any settings for a broadband connection. My computer is a Acer Aspire One Netbook 250

I just received a 2 tb drive for my server to be. The pc is a P4 3.06 ghz with 4 gb of ram. I have found a number of posts on this forum, as well as on the net in general, about setting up a file/print server at home. What I want to be able to do is to access my server through the internet from my office computer (windows 2000) How can I do that? I have not yet spent much time trying to decide which distro I will use. It seems that a number of them are suitable for this purpose, so I just plan to try several from a live cd and then choose one.
I already have Linux Enterprise 5 system installed with some server packages such as Webmin, Active Directory, Web Server which also act as Internet gateway. Now I want to add firewall functionality to block clients ip accessing internet.
We are using spare parts (Socket 775 Biostar motherboard, OCZ 500wat PSU) to build a computer that will just be another system in the house. I want this system to be running Folding@Home, and the F@H SMP client for Linux is much less of a headache than its Windows couterpart, so I would like this computer to run Fedora. My dad loves networking, and knows how to do it in XP / Vista, so he has always opposed my frequent use of Linux. There are ways of accessing Windows shared folders from Linux, but that I haven't figured it out yet. I want to access Windows shared folders from my Fedora 10. I don't know how to go about doing this, can anyone point me in the right direction? Do I have to install anything special? I can go to Places, and then Network (in Gnome) and I see "Windows Network", but when I click it, I get "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server"
I would like to access my NSA-220 Plus through the Internet without having computer turned on. I tried to set it up as a FTP server but I was not successful. I tried few tutorials but all allow me to access NSA-220 Plus only within my home network which is not what I want. Also I tried user manual which does not really tell you how to do this.
I have 17 system (sys1,sys2,sys3.....sys17) in my office, and i am willing to setup a dedicated system to act as a firewall for that i have selected sys1 with two NIC(eth0 for local network and eth1 for internet) and i have configured to access internet in my office for that i have opened a wellknown port 80.but my clients are not accessing the internet..

First I will give some background. We have a currently working network that the Previous network Admin assigned an internal IP scheme of 200.1.1.0/24. I have no idea why he would have done such a thing, but it is my job to fix it (and keep our systems up and running). We have a Fedora 10 box on the 200 network that is acting as a router and a firewall (shorewall to be exact).
I added another NIC card (thank you again to all the great people on this forum for helping me get that working) and it is eth2. Assigned it a 10.100.1.A/24 (This is just a variable for the real IP). The other end of the cable that I plugged into that NIC connects to a Cisco Layer 3 switch. I assigned the port that connects to the other end of the cable the IP address of 10.100.1.B/24
Ok, I added the static route of ˜ip route add 10.100.1.0/24 via 10.100.1.A dev eth2' I added loc2 (which is my eth2 adapter) to the /etc/shorewall/zones file. I set eth2 on loc2 in the /etc/shorewall/interfaces file. loc2 eth2 detect I set the lines in the /etc/shorewall/policies file loc loc2 ACCEPT info loc2 loc ACCEPT info I can ping the cisco switch from the linux server itself. From a PC on the original network I can ping the new NIC card in the linux server, but cannot ping the cisco switch, so I figure it has to be either the route or shorewall.
I've searched the forums (250 thread limit) for a fix on this, but all the questions seem unanswered or unrelated. My situation is this: I'm running Ubuntu x64 10.10 'Maverick'. I have a cablemodem connection for my Internet access. I have home network running on DD-WRT with the dreadful Linksys WRT54G series router.
My DD-WRT router is 192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0. My Linux box is 192.168.1.61, subnet 255.255.255.0.
I have a VyprVPN connection set up successfully on Linux. Mostly everything works great, speed's fine, latency is what I expect it to be. Except... I also run an SSH server to remotely admin the box at port 22, an Apache server running over SSL at port 7001, and a Transmission web client at port 7002 (only secured by basic HTTP realms auth). All of these things worked before I got the VPN working, I'm of course using NAT at the DD-WRT router.
The endresult I am looking for, is to have the security and protection of the VPN (even if it's only perceived) for everything I do on this machine -- EXCEPT on Apache, the Transmission web panel, and the SSH server, which I want to access from the outside world. I have no firewalls running or configured, not even iptables, not even the SPI firewall on DD-WRT. All connections to the aforementioned services from the outside world timeout coming in to the Linux box. They all work from inside my home network (182.168.1.0/24). I have the following nasty issue:I am using fedora 12 and I use vpn for working remote.When I browse the internet the speed is very slow!even when I do a yum update it downloads the packages with max 100kb. if I drop the vpn connection I download the packages with 1Mbdo you know what the problem could be? i created the vpn connection using the network manager...it is a regular pptp connection for the vpn!
I am just struck in a situation of sharing internet connection with windows xp and fedora. the scenario is i'm connected to internet via wireless card in winxp system, i connected fedora and winxp through ethernet cards via cross over cable.
Now i shared the wireless connection in winxp by checking "allows other user to share this internet connection."

The probelm now is i can't able to get internet access in fedora i can able to ping fedora ip address from win xp. but in my network places ->workgroup computers there is nothing .
I am noticing problems accessing the firewall gui and mounting the second hard drive in my PC running Fedora 13. This is only when I am accessing the machine with VNC. If I am sitting in front of the physical machine, I have no problems at all. I would like VNC to behave more like I am sitting in front of the computer. Is there a way to do this? I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.
There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.
