OpenSUSE :: LibreOffice Causes Very Severe System Lockup
Jul 2, 2011
I am not sure of which LibreOffice version I am using because I can't open the ****ed program. So here's what's happening: I start LibreOffice, my screen looks unusual (it tiles a section of the screen that is the same size as the LibreOffice window (I think) across both of my monitors) and my system locks up. I am unable to use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Ctrl+Alt+F1-F8, or any other keyboard combination. No mouse click registers and the cursor acts as if the mouse is in one location (if the system locked up with my cursor over a link, the cursor stays like that) BUT the mouse still moves. Also, if I am playing music when it locks up, I can continue to hear the music and the music continues to shuffle through my playlist.
I am able to access my machine normally through ssh and the only way I've been able to fix this is to hold down the power button or pull the power. I have not identified what action causes the system to lock up, the only thing I've noticed is that LibreOffice is open every time this happens (It's happened no matter if Writer or Calc is open). The system almost always locks up upon startup of LibreOffice if the recovery window pops up, otherwise it locks up at some point during my LibreOffice session no matter what. I have not touched LibreOffice on my other machine's openSUSE installation, so I don't know how reproducible the problem is. Let me know if you need any extra information or if there are any diagnostic commands I could run.

I've just installed OpenSuse 11.3 on my two Sony Vaio VPCF11Z1E machines (which have a Geforce GT 330M graphics card). Both machines appear to setup correctly and behave normally, but at seemingly random intervals (of the order of magnitude of 15-30 minutes) the whole system locks up for no readily apparent reason. I can still move the mouse pointer around the screen, but I cannot click on anything, and the whole keyboard is unresponsive (including any reasonable ctrl-alt-xxx which might normally help). The only way to get out of this seems to be to press and hold the power button to shut the whole machine off (which is not ideal!)

My mouse and trackpad button control is severely impaired in 11.3, KDE 4.5.1 (or .2) using Compiz. Gnome works fine. XFCE has some problems. The mouse control of window features is sometimes limited to one window with the rest of the desktop not responding to mouse actions. Popping up a second window from an app causes the mouse control to be completely lost. The issue leaves KDE effectively broken having only keyboard control. With some ESC key hits and using right mouse button to close one app (from the panel), I can move focus to another app but mouse control within the app is non-existent. Moving windows or raising or lowering doesn't work either. Sometimes, the GUI captures the mouse click but does not recognize the active App and applies it to objects sitting on the desktop screen underneath.
I've reverted partially back to the 11.3 installation DVD then reload updates and then moved to stable release of 4.5, then went back to the 4.5 factory. All failed to correct the problem. I removed .kde/.kde4 files and this did not help. What is wrong with my system? Also installed the latest kernel of the repos then reverted back to 2.6.34.7-0.3 [x64]. [very frustrating, been using Suse/KDE for >7 yrs, this one has me stumped]

I have a E-MU 0202 USB soundcard that I want to use as a input for my Debian Squeeze 6.0.1. Stock squeeze (kernel 2.6.32-5-686, version 2.6.32-31) has alsa-driver 1.0.21 as kernel modules and alsa-utils 1.0.23. The E-MU needs 1.0.23+ alsa driver, with 1.0.21 it loads in alsa but is not functional (no input) So I tried to install the 1.0.23 modules with module assistant: m-a update && m-a prepare m-a a-i alsa I left all conf-files (like /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf) standard. When I now connect the E-MU device, my whole system becomes unresponsive (to keyboard/mouse), and I get the following messages in my console: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [modprobe:1292] Also, when I start top before connecting, I can see modprobe process taking 100% for a few minutes before system freezes completely. It did generate an oops once: [URL].... Does anybody here have any ideas how to get this working?

Here is the scenario: I load hundreds of h264/ac3 video clips from my HD video camera onto a four disk software raid stripe under Fedora 14 running the 2.6.38.3-15.rc1.fc15.x86_64 kernel. I then run a python script I've written to do batch process transcoding on the clips so that I can then edit them in cinelerra. FWIW, the transcode command is: nice ffmpeg -i infile.MTS -y -deinterlace -s hd720 -r 29.97 -acodec pcm_s16be -ar 48000 -ac 2 -vcodec mjpeg -qscale 2 out.mov. The python script batches these commands until they are all completed.
The system is capable of 16 concurrent threads and I set up 8 concurrent run queues to do the processing. Occasionally (about one in every 7 runs), the system will hard lockup during the batch. The X screens are still visible, but the mouse and keyboard are dead and the onscreen clocks freeze. The network io led still flashes but the hard disk io led is on solid at that point, leading me to theorize a kernel bug in the software raid handling. I am not able to remote log in and the system must be then hard rest with the reset button. After the reset there is no useful information in the system logs. this is a pretty uber SMP machine: two westmere quad core cpus, 24GB of ram and a four WD disk software stripe array running under the Intel ICH10 controller. I also have a RocketRaid controller installed but no disks are currently attached to it, and I disabled its bios in the setup. Additional disks under the ICH10 are an SSD system disk, and a sata insertion caddy that I usually have occupied with a disk I do backups to. So, all 6 channels on the ICH are usuallt occupied. General output from hdparm -i is:

Running updated 11.04 on a older Dell Precision 360n. Been having random system freezes for the past month that requires a hard restart (REISUB doesn't work) each time. Sometimes the caps lock and scroll lock LEDs blink, other times not. sometimes it happens during boot, other times during normal usage. There hasn't been anything in any of the logs (except once, which I'll post below). This happened running 10.04 and 10.10 as well. I've run PC-check a few times and all hardware diagnostics have passed. Until today, i've been able to boot and run Trinity Rescue Kit 3.4 to mount the disk and examine the logs (and do backups), but now TRK won't boot and spews kernel panics when loading.

Where does one look in terms of diagnostics after a system lockup and hard reset? For example, one of my computers, running Fedora 14 i686, has taken to locking up quite a bit lately. My only way out is a hard reset. Now, once the thing is booted back up I'd like to try to figure out where the problem lies. Where do I look? Will any of the log files reveal anything relevant to me? If so, what sort of things would I be looking for. Keywords?
This same box also locked up when I had Fedora 14 x86_64 installed. I had read that there were some issues with the newer 64 bit kernels that were causing lockups and / or extremely high loads. This is why I switched back to the 32 bit version, 2 days ago to be exact. The box gets little use. It's a toy really and not my main "daily use" computer. It is, however, running folding@home. Maybe that's where the problem is. About 15 minutes ago I called home and had my wife reset the box, then I logged in from work and stopped the folding service. I'll have to see if it locks up without folding running. Folding was running on this box when I had the 64 bit version installed also.

I'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.

11.4 Boot Freeze That is there is a BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck message and the boot hangs. The modprobe/migration codes are not identical with the linked thread. I'm stuck with CPU#0 at [modprobe:138] and #1 stuck at [migration1:8]. Generally after 61 or 63s.
This is a zypper dup from latest 11.3.The machine boots with acpi=off, luckily. But I'd like to have it all working. The forum says I can't post attachments; hwinfo output seems a bit copious to quote inline. But I'd be happy to provide any additional info obviously.

I have been running 11.2 32bit on my IBM T43 laptop without issue. Tonight I downloaded 11.3 32bit and installed to HDD. On reboot into new system laptop has complete freeze. Can not do anything but power off to reboot. I also found the same situation if I try to run KDE live off the cd. Oh yes, I downloaded the openSUSE 11.3 KDE Live CD version.
So here is what I found. On bootup (either HDD install or Live CD desktop) I will goto to tty1 or tty4 to see the boot up process messages. And it get right up to the login prompt without issue. If I then switch back to tty7 (the normal bootup display) after a few seconds the screen and laptop itself completely lockup (freeze). So I power off to reboot.
this time I boot up in tty1 again until login prompt but this time I type root to login. Then I switch to tty7 and now I can see the desktop. I goto the menu to search and load up Kinfocenter but then its freezes again.
So its very frustrating as I can not use this new version of openSUSE on my laptop. It just keeps freezing. Whats worse is I cant see any logs or screen message in tty1 because once it starts to login to desktop it freezes. So I am not even sure how to troubleshoot any further what the issue is. I assume its KDE4 or XOrg server.

I frequently (i.e. after 10-20 minutes of use) get a complete system freeze when using LibreOffice Calc 3.3.3, on Ubuntu 11.04. At the time, I have an *.ods file open, and the freeze happens at various times, for example just after pressing the Page Up button. After the freeze occurs, nothing responds, not even Ctrl+Alt+F1, and I have to force power off my laptop.
how to debug this problem, as there's no error message, no error log (that I know of??)..

I've been using LibreOffice, and I noticed that when I try to save some presentation as PDF it freezes everything. There's no way but to manually reset the machine. The pdf conversion worked for a very very simple presentation, but once it got a bit bigger (nothing huge, just 20 slides with pictures and no animations), it just won't work.

Basically when I add more than a single 2gb RAM module, my computer starts randomly crashing every half hour or so, the screen freezes with no response. I have tested the RAM with memtest 86+, it only happens when there is more than one module. The system is openSuse 11.2 64bit and it had a single 2gb RAM module when I first installed it, and removing all but this seemingly fixes the issue. The following is the error message I get when the system crashes, It seems to continue messaging after the initial visual lockup.

I don't know what the problem is, but from searching the web it could be a number of problems, the memory is not being allocated correctly or it maybe there's some conflict no between my ATI HD card/driver (latest driver from ATI repo).

OpenSuse 11.4. LibreOffice any versions and Infra Resource OpenOffice can not open any DBF files from smb/cifs shares. At the same time he can write DBF to smb/cifs normally, but after saving it he can't open it!
Any other documents - no problem! odt, xls - any! but not DBF.. And this problem is only on OpenSUSE 11.4 and only in Libre/Open Office! Any other programms can open and write DBF files to smb/cifs shares.

whenever I try to include a SVG picture into a ODT document (e.g. in Writer) I get a "Graphics filter not found" error message. I'm using the "Insert->Picture->From File" menu. I still have .odt files from OpenOffice in 11.3 around that contain SVG cliparts, so it used to work and SVG support is one of the feature highlights in LibreOffice.

I've had a problem with libreoffice - it won't open files. That is,File/Open doesn't bring up a dialog box. File/New works and so does using a filename on the command line when starting libreoffice. Now there's good news and bad news. The good news is that with help from some libreoffice-users folks, I now know what caused this and I have a workaround. The bad news is that it's a bug in Libreoffice and I need some help testing other versions, please. So here's the steps to reproduce:
(1) Login to a Gnome session (KDE may also work, dunno)
(2) Start libreoffice
(3) Select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
(4) Observe in that page a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
(5) Ensure the checkbox is blank (not selected)
(6) Save settings and check that File/Open pops up a dialog box.
(7) Quit libreoffice and log out of the session
(8) Login to an LXDE session
(9) Start libreoffice
(10) Select File/Open
*(11) Check whether a dialog box appears
(12) If not, select Tools/Options/LibreOffice/General
*(13) Check whether there is a checkbox 'Use LibreOffice dialogue boxes'
If your system does NOT open a dialog box in step 11 and does NOT have a checkbox in step 13, you are seeing the same bug as me.I'm using opensuse 11.3.

I received some M$ Power Points files and cannot open then. One file was from Power Points 2010, and another saved with the option 2000-2010. These were rejected by Impress with the failure report "Version Incompatibility. Incorrect file version". When a file was saved with the option Power Point 95, Impress tried to open it but when RAM useable ramped up to > 1GB, Impress automatically shut down. The only other information wrt the files is that its highly likely they contain graphics generated with M$Visio. Has anyone had similar experiences? Are there any work arounds?

I've just installed Opensue 11.4 (gnome-desktop) on my machine. The problem is that, if I open a database-form with libreoffice base, no navigation-bar appeares. The option "navigation" from the view-menu is not active. The database uses the built-in HSQLDB in single user mode. Navigation via libreoffice-basic is possible and I can see the first record - just it is not possible to navigate manually.

I have 11.4 with kde 4.6, all up to date via YAST. Radeon driver, legacy ATI display hardware. LibreOffice is latest from the Stable:11.4 repo.
When I open LO, it causes the desktop to break up - diagonal stripes of blocks, and garbage (offset blocks) form all mouse movements from there until kdm restarted.
I restart by switching to F1 console, init 3, the init 5 as root. I can't seem to find any useful messages or logs.
