Fedora Networking :: Server Not Show Up On Network Places

Jan 9, 2011

I have a simple problem where Windows machines can connect to shares on my Fedora server (via SAMBA), but only when using the IP address. When Windows users to go Network (in Vista and 7) or Network Places (XP), then all computers on the network show up in that window except for the Fedora server. How can I get my server to appear in that space? Although I can connect via IP address, we are using some programs that can only find shares by the computer name (aka if it's found in the Network window). I have checked and rechecked that the workgroup name is indeed correct.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot See Network Shares In "Places"

Oct 20, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 x64 desktop. We have a NAS with several shared directories. They mount fine using manual "Connect to Server" using the SMB protocol. I assigned "Bookmarks" on connection so that I can recall them more easily when needed. The shared drives appear under "Places" with the more user friendly Bookmarks for each share appearing after the line divider in File Manager. This is all splendid.

However, when for example wanting to attach a file from a mapped shared drive when writing an email in Gmail (in either Firefox or Chromium), the "File Upload" window that opens DOES NOT show any mapped shared drives or Bookmarks making it impossible to attach anything from a shared drive. how to fix this rather bizarre behaviour since it is severely limiting the usefulness of centralizing our files on a NAS if I cannot attach shared files to emails.

Drag and drop also does not work. Firefox ignores them while Chromium says "This file is 0 bytes, so it will not be attached." I just successfully attached the same files in Chrome running on a Windows 7 machine in Virtualbox. This is both amazing, and somewhat embarrassing. How to do this from within Ubuntu 10.04 so that I do not have to resort to running a Windows machine just so that I can attach shared files

Ubuntu Networking :: 9.10 Desktop - Wireless Network Does Not Show Up

Apr 22, 2010

I just got Ubuntu and I feel like there is going to be a really simple solution but right now I cannot find any information on a solution. I run 9.10 desktop i386 or w/e and I have a wireless connection. The network does not show up when I go the network manager to select a network. No networks show up and all it lets me do is create a new network connection which I have no idea how to do. I think it might have to do with my device recognition, but the network is fine it is just Ubuntu.

Fedora Networking :: No IP Address From DHCP Server On Wireless Network?

Feb 12, 2009

I am using WEP security and authentication is open system.

I have windows 7 beta installed on the same machine and on that wireless network works fine so i am sure that there is no problem with the wirless network. I am using DIR-300 router from D-LINK. I tried to see packet log on wireshark and there i see that there is no reply to the DHCP discover message. Actually i don't see any RX packets at all. Which is not normal as there is traffic on the network.

Fedora Networking :: Fixing Network Manager / Caching Name Server

Sep 5, 2009

I've set up a caching nameserver on my laptop running Fedora 11. The problem with this is that NetworkManager always overwrites the entry that points to the local nameserver. NetworkManager no longer respects /etc/dhclient.conf or at least its scripts run after dhclient.conf. Also it doesn't respect /etc/sysconfig/ network-scripts/ifcfg-* setting of DNS{1.2}.The man page of NetworkManager describes scripts that run in /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d which can be run when interfaces are brought up and down. I've written a script that will put the entry needed for the local nameserver.

Restarting network says only: *Reconfiguring network interfaces... Kernel boot messages:

The network Im trying to connect to is hidden, so I have to input SSID manually, I doubt this causes the problem.

Ive tried both wired and wireless but makes no difference. Seems really weird that it works in the Windows VM but not in Redhat which its booting into.
