Read my Linux distribution from my user data. I have configure different network places bookmarks but accidentally, I introduced the wrong username in that one, thus it is listed as a bookmark for a network place, but it will not connect. How do I erase these bookmarks?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI opened a folder with brasero a while ago, to make a DVD. For some reason this stuck. When I click on any of the bookmarks in places, Brasero pops up. It also happens if I click "open containing folder" in Ktorrent, so it must be a global setting, but I couldn't figure out where to change this back to Nautilus
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to use a bookmark in the Main Menu (under "Places"), I get an error message. For example, if I want to open my Documents folder, the message reads:
"[STOP Sign] Could not open location 'file:///home/pilotferdi/Documents'
Failed to execute child process "/usr/bin/digikam" (No such file or directory)" (I had digikam installed on my computer, then I decided to remove it.)When I open a Nautilus file browser, and choose "Information" from the side pane, my home directory is listed with these three options (buttons) below:
1. Open with digikam
2. Open with Gwenview
3. Open with Open Folder
Somehow, the default choice, "Open with Open Folder" has been replaced with "Open with digikam", and I cannot access the bookmarks anymore. I think I need to make "Open with Open Folder" the default option when I click on a bookmark, but I don't know how to do it. I tried without success to use alacarte to make the changes.
I have a simple problem where Windows machines can connect to shares on my Fedora server (via SAMBA), but only when using the IP address. When Windows users to go Network (in Vista and 7) or Network Places (XP), then all computers on the network show up in that window except for the Fedora server. How can I get my server to appear in that space? Although I can connect via IP address, we are using some programs that can only find shares by the computer name (aka if it's found in the Network window). I have checked and rechecked that the workgroup name is indeed correct.

as I recently added some folders in the Places sidebar of the file browser to reach them in a single click, I noticed that they also appeared in the Places section of the panel (which is logical and which is good) but in a bookmarks section that I would like to remove (to have the shortcuts of the folders still one click ahead) I tried the 'edit Menus' after a right click on the panel but without any success as it edits only the Application and System menu I also tried via the file browser but couldn't get it
View 3 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 x64 desktop. We have a NAS with several shared directories. They mount fine using manual "Connect to Server" using the SMB protocol. I assigned "Bookmarks" on connection so that I can recall them more easily when needed. The shared drives appear under "Places" with the more user friendly Bookmarks for each share appearing after the line divider in File Manager. This is all splendid.
However, when for example wanting to attach a file from a mapped shared drive when writing an email in Gmail (in either Firefox or Chromium), the "File Upload" window that opens DOES NOT show any mapped shared drives or Bookmarks making it impossible to attach anything from a shared drive. how to fix this rather bizarre behaviour since it is severely limiting the usefulness of centralizing our files on a NAS if I cannot attach shared files to emails.
Drag and drop also does not work. Firefox ignores them while Chromium says "This file is 0 bytes, so it will not be attached." I just successfully attached the same files in Chrome running on a Windows 7 machine in Virtualbox. This is both amazing, and somewhat embarrassing. How to do this from within Ubuntu 10.04 so that I do not have to resort to running a Windows machine just so that I can attach shared files
I'm running ubuntu maverick and i'm having issues with some things.First off, Alt+F2 no longer opens the Run Dialog. I have checked the keyboard shortcuts and settings and re-entered the command but it still doesn't work. I also checked the compiz settings for gnome compatibility. The odd thing is that all of my other Function key shortcuts work, just not Alt+F2 Not sure what else to try.
Next, I am not able to open Network in Places. I click it, then I get a loading icon for half a second then nothing opens. Also, when I click Places > Connect to Server, the only option that I have is custom location. The issue with this is that I used to have several other options like FTP, SSH, Windows Share, etc.
I installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 today on an old laptop. I then used webmin to configure it and enabled windows networking, the laptop is in the same workgroup as another win7 laptop and a win xp desktop. However, I can't see the server in My network places.

However when on my house mates Mac there are many different file types present. At first I thought it may be a formatting problem but the files can be accessed from a windows machine also.

Just workgroup = MSHOME to workgroup = WORKGROUP.
And browseable = yes.
Beacuse my xp workgroup is WORKGROUP. So I changed as same workgroup name
both unbuntu and XP.
But I couldn't find samba pc on network places at XP. I have started smbd and nmbd already. There is a ridiculous something. I can access samba at XP only typing \samba IP address. But why I can't see at network places. I am using ubuntu 10.04 TL.
I am trying to permanently integrate a windows network drive into my Ubuntu 11.04. I don't have Nautilus - I am using Rox Filer instead. I am trying to get this job done according to this link here (Method 2): [URL]. I want to integrate the network drive as described in Method 2, but I don't have Places->Network. Is there a way I could do this without Nautilus?

I have the follwoing fenomenan. In my /etc/fstab I have an entry to automatically mount my NAS. Here is my entry:
192.168.1.10:/mnt/array1/My_NAS /media/My�40NAS nfs _netdev,
auto,rw,hard,users,intr 0 0
When my laptop boots it successfully mounts the NFS NAS and I get an icon "My NAS" on my dekstop that points to the NAS. If I double click on the icon it opens my file browser and I can browse thru my NAS fodlers.
What I see on the left hand side of the file browser is that I have to entries for My NAS. One of it has a button to shows that it is mounted and the other does not.
If I go to Places I also see 2 entries for "My NAS". One of it takes me to browsing the NAS and if I click on the other it says "Unable to mount ... busy or already mounted". Which makes sense.
I have a Debian Squeeze installed on my old iBook G4 mid 2005. The computer has been giving me hard time and I want to sell it for parts. Before that however I'd like to erase the hard drive securely. Is there a software that this forum recommends for erasing hard drives completely and securely? Is there Linux equivalent for something like DBAN which can be installed on a CD and then boot the computer from it?

I have recently installed ubuntu on a previously vista operated laptop, now i need to eradicate all of vista i care not for it at all, I've read some of the threads here and saw someone say something about ubuntu overwriting everything on my hard drive including vista, is that dangerous, easy, and the most efficient way of doing this. i also tried removing the partition of vista by following a response to a thread, using gparted but now im stuck and i failed horribly (very limited computer knowledge).

I have a CF card I'd like to erase. My CF card reader is connected to my Linux machine via USB. How do I do a secure erase (i.e., the ATA Secure Erase functionality) of the CF card?
I have tried hdparm --security-erase NULL /dev/sdc, but I get an error: ERASE_PREPARE: Invalid exchange. In fact, any hdparm command gives me the same error:

I read somewhere that hdparm can't do an ATA Secure Erase of a drive that is connected over USB. Is this true? I tried using sdparm, but sdparm doesn't seem to have the capability to send the ATA Secure Erase command to the CF card. So, what is the proper way to do this?
I work for a public school and we are implementing a number of Ubuntu NBR 9.1 netbooks. I wanted to use Likewise Active Directory for authentication, but have problems with the software so now I'm onto another solution for our problem.
We are going to have one login for all users (Students, is the name). The problem with this is that Website passwords can inadvertantly be stored, potentially compromising users personal data. Additionally, I don't want to have any files left in the Students profile in case people accidentally save personal information in their files.I'm thinking there are potentially two solutions:
1. The Students profile is deleted when the user logs off. This will erase web history and files
2. The Students account is always logged in with a temporary profile (or no profile, if that is possible) that deletes itself at logoff because it is temporary.

Several moths ago I installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat alfa3 in a newly created partition while I was using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. After I installed the 10.10 alfa3, I realized that it also installed its grub. Moreover that grub could not detect the kernel updates of 10.04. Thus, I recovered the grub of 10.04 via live CD. Interestingly after I returned the grub of 10.04 the boot time of 10.04 has considerably increased.
For example, the Ubuntu splash screen appears 20 seconds after selecting Ubuntu in Grub menu. I thought that a fresh installation for 10.10 final release would solve the problem but it seems that I'm still getting the same boot time until the splash screen is the same. It seems that I need a fresh installation of Grub. The methods that are introduced following url are just recovers Grub. I need to erase and reinstall the Grub. [URL]
that's my problem, can't find a way to erase 2 files that apparently don't want to move to the rubish bin. it says: can't move the file to trash, wan't to erase it permanently? View 9 Replies View Relatedjob installing windows XP and a partion ubuntu (?) on my desktop compooper. telling him i have no knowledge of ubuntu, he still isntalled it. I am giving this computer to my parents, and want to just put Windows XP on it. here is what a half *** job means, windows XP doesn't have the sound and ethernet driver. he couldn't find them to install them onto the computer...and i keep getting errors all over the place when i try and do things on ubuntu.
I downloaded Windows XP Professional 64bit Corporate yesterday and burned it to a CD. Restarted the computer so it will boot but it just keeps going to the screen asking which system I want to log in to. NOW HERE IS THE KICKER.... when i try to go onto the windows XP side, it is coming up with an error that says I need to activate windows. when i click yes, it says i have already activated. when i click on the user it repeats what i just stated. so now i can't even get into the windows xp side.
I'm having a problem trying to uninstall Quicksynergy all the way.first i did sudo apt-get remove synergy then sudo apt-get purge synergy.Checked in synaptic manager and software center that they did not show it. reinstalled synergy through the software center. and it is still showing me the name/ ip of my client.so this tells me it did not uninstall everything. i have searched the file system for synergy.conf with no luck been high and low on the web but no luck.

Assume also that in about six months I want to give this computer to Mr. X, but I do not want Mr. X to know that I have been using ubuntu. I don't want to install anything over top of ubuntu, I just want the computer to be completely (or as nearly completely as possible) blank so that Mr. X cannot infer what I've been doing on it. The trick here is that I can't use operating system x_{1} to delete operating system x_{0}. I don't want Mr. X to know anything about which OS I have been using. Mr. X, by the way, is a sophisticated computer user but not particularly interested in tracking me down. Once he sees that the computer is blank Mr. X will just install his own operating system and everybody will be happy.
