Fedora Installation :: Upgraded To F11 - Display?

Nov 10, 2009

Upgraded to Fedora 11 and my display aspect ratio is now broken. I have a 23" Acer screen, but in Gnome its auto detecting as a 20" Acer display and the aspect ratio is wrong and the display grainy. I read the FAQs and am trying out some suggestions. Created an xorg.conf file in the correct place, contains the correct monitor settings but my display is still broken. Q. How do I force the kernel to read the xorg.conf file ?(PS: I'm kind of a newbie, have only come back to linux after a few years of using Windows)

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded From 11 To 12 / But It Still Show 11

Dec 9, 2009

I did the upgrade, over the internet, using the "preupgrade" command. All the files downloaded and I rebooted and it is all apparently working fine. When I do a uname -a command I get this response:Linux Fedora11 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Fri Dec 4 00:43:59 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux.When I open a terminal window it says username@Fedora11:~When I run "rpm -qa" it show my installed packages all end with fc12, so I am sure I am on Fedora 12.When I used to run Ubuntu, I would just open the file /etc/lsb-release and it would show me what version I was running. What file holds that information in Fedora 12 ?

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded From F11 To F12 Using Preupgrade?

Jan 8, 2010

I did have F11 on my laptop all running smoothly and everything which is good. But now I've updated from F11 using the preupgrade tool which for what I could see everything downloaded and installed ok, that was until the reboot after the install had completed after seemingly loading F12 it left me with a black screen with a blinking cursor so after a few more reboots with the same out come I decided to see what the loading was stopping at and this is what it came up with

Code:

Welcome to Fedora
Press 'I' to enter interactive startup.
Starting udev: [ OK ]
Setting Hostname Fireline.Yuki: [ OK ]
mdadm: No arrays found in config or automatically

[code]....

And it stops loading after "Starting atd: [ OK ]" I am going to try a CD install either tomorrow or the day after then I'll go back to F11 depending if it works or not.

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded F12 Runs Slow?

May 21, 2010

I've just upgraded my from F11 to F12 via software update and found F12 extremely slow to the extent that only the mosue cursor moves, the rest does not - not even opening folders or starting application.

My specs:
Core2Duo
1GB RAM
160GB HDD

It seems that

npviewer.bin is taking up up to 50% of CPU. Xorg takes 20%..

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded And Now Can't Mount Home / Solution For This?

Mar 23, 2009

"Upgraded" from FC5 32 bit to Fedora 10 64 bit using Fedora Live KDE disk, and unchecking the boxes to format drives with my personal data. In the install it recognized these as SW raid devices. One is raid 1, the other raid 5.

Now, it still recognizes the raid devices, and mdstat claims they are working fine, but I cannot mount them (mount says must specify a FS type, but that doesn't work either).

Fedora Installation :: Tecra A4 Upgraded From FC11 To FC13?

Jun 14, 2010

I had FC11 installed on a Toshiba Tecra A4 and when I upgraded via dvd, the system "hangs" after finishing the last gray bar(the bar flickers a lot at the last), keyboard ctrl-alt-del will reboot. I had used noapic and acpi=off before, but does not help now. Intel graphics, at first a flash about address collision.

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded To FC11 From FC10 / System Freezes / Hangs

Jun 24, 2009

I upgraded from FC10 to FC11 yesterday.I had no problems using FC11 after I looked into the bootloader (not intuitive - Ha!).Tried to boot up this morning; and things seemed to work well until I tried to call up Firefox (added a few themes yesterday). The window pops open; but the computer freezes on the spot with an alarm (generic "beep", w/o the finishing "p").Tried it with Epiphany; and I get the same results with the exception of actually getting to the Home Page.Yum works for the most part - I reinstalled Firefox (no effect); but couldn't reinstall epiphany (keeps saying "there is no such package - did you mean 'epiphany'". No typos on my part - go figure). Doing Software/Package Updates (via System Menu) freezes the box as well.Did it with the system monitor on. It doesn't appear to be related to CPU Usage.

Had a FC10 liveUSB and used it for awhile (e.g. to check out the forums). After giving my ISP some grief about downloading speed, immediately received a note from their Abuse Department, saying that my machine had been infected with a virus and had been sending spam emails (post upgrade to FC11).

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded To FC10 - Video - Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found Gotta Go, X Session Getting Corrupt

Jun 13, 2009

I must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:

First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.

Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,

Fedora Installation :: Getting 12 Without Keyboard / Display?

So here we go: Is it possible to install Fedora on a PC which has no keyboard nor mouse nor display attached to it? And if so plx give a link or a short description how to do it. I read about kickstart, but this was all a little wacky.

Note: The PC will have network access.

Fedora Installation :: No Display After ATI Driver Installation?

Feb 12, 2009

I'm new to Fedora and just installed F10 yesterday. Everything was perfect, no snags at all, until I used the software tool to install the ATI drivers. Now my computer boots but instead of going back to the GUI all I get is a gray screen. I've tried everything I know to get to the command line so I can go back to my old X11 settings but there's no response -just the gray screen.

I'd prefer not to have to reinstall if I could avoid it. Is there a know bug with either a Toshiba Satellite A210 series laptop or the ATI Radeon Mobility X1300 graphics card? Since I'm not able to get to the command line, I don't know of a way to diagnose what's failing.

Fedora Installation :: F11 - System Config Display Will Not Run

Jun 29, 2009

I just updated from Fedora 8 to 10 to 11 today. When I run system-config-display I get the following message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/system-config-display/xconf.py", line 33, in <module>
import rhpxl.monitor
ImportError: No module named rhpxl.monitor

If I comment out that line, the next one fails, and so on. I installed a newer package, 1.1.3-2.fc11, because I thought maybe the installer didn't put it on and that behaves the same. Why this won't run? I would desperately like to use my widescreen monitor and I'm hoping that 11 will finally support my intel graphics correctly.

Fedora :: Installation Of ATI Driver Messed Up X Display?

I'm running F11 with an ATI HD3850 graphics card. I donloaded latest version of the ATI driver and installed it (without paying to much attention to versions and pre-reqs). This caused my display to be unusable in Gnome, nothing can be made out of it.

Was hoping to be able to repair this if I atleast had a bash prompt, but when I press ctrl-alt-F6 (or any F-button) my computer restarts. how I could fix this without reinstalling?

Fedora Installation :: Xserver Set To Display Modes Above 800*600

Dec 27, 2009

I use 3 computers attached to a kvm switch (not the hypervisor) and this works fine w/ windows xp and ubuntu 9.04 and earlier. However I am having a problem w/ Fedora 12. It seems that it cannot read the EDID block, so I am not able to set the display above 800x600. There is no xorg.conf file, so I had one generated by Xorg -configure :1. I also tried using the modeline instructions, but the Xserver would not start until I removed modeline. I have tried adding to Section "Screen"

Subsection "Display"
Modes "1280x800"
EndSubSection

but it seems that this is ignored. how can I get the Xserver to set display modes above 800x600 when it cannot read EDID (thru a kvm switch) and it seems to be ignoring settings in xorg.conf?

Fedora :: 11 Installation - No Display During Initial Boot ?

Aug 28, 2009

I am trying to install Fedora 11 on my HP Desktop (Intel P4 2.8 GHz) machine with 1.25 GB memory. It has 265 MB nVidia graphics card (6800 series).

When I try to install from boot from the DVD, it prompts to boot (in 10 secs). However after it boots all I get is a blank screen. I suspect this has something to do with the X display initialization with respect to the graphics card I have.

I had faced similar issue with other distros before (Ubuntu) but could manage to boot with some specific boot parameters for specifying x display driver settings at boot (vesa).

I recall Fedora has similar settings like xdisplay=vesa. But unfortunately this doesn't work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To 10.04 And It's DOA?

Nov 12, 2010

The software manager has been nagging me to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 for some time now. I finally gave in and clicked on Upgrade. After the upgrade completed, my computer won't start. It just flashes Ubuntu for a split second and goes to a black screen. I happen to have the 10.04 CD from Canonical, and I tried that, and it won't launch the installer either; just a logo and a black screen. Since I can't even get to the terminal to diagnose and fix whatever's wrong, I'm installing 9.10 from the CD that I ordered from Canonical a long time ago. I went through all the graphical options just like the first time I installed 9.10, and it's in the process of installing right now.

I don't really have time to futz with it because I need my laptop for when I go and visit my mum for Thanksgiving. Maybe I'll try after the holidays if I can get some feedback on what might have gone wrong with 10.04.

Fedora Installation :: FC10 - Excessive Horizontal Display Jitter

Feb 9, 2009

After having used fc5 for years, I installed fc10 in order to be able to run the newest versions of some of my tools. Under fc5, my monitor (Dell 2407FPW) and adapter (ATI Technologies Inc RV380) have happily coexisted at 1920x1200 76Hz. During the fc10 install, the monitor flickered a few times, then settled down (an auto-detect by the installation?) Now, after installation is complete, if I display a window with a lot of small text, the text is nearly unreadable because of horizontal jitter. If I move the window part-way off-screen, so that there is less small text on-screen, the jitter is somewhat reduced.

My hunch was that the installation got the ModeLine settings wrong, but when I went to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf, I couldn't find it. I also ran a case-insensitive search for any file containing "ModeLine", starting in /etc, but nothing turned up except /etc/prelink.cache, a binary file.

I tried running Computer/SystemSettings/Display, but every time I do this, the monitor immediately goes into sleep mode, and nothing will recover it out except an X11 reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace).

Is there any way to tweak the display settings other than the gui ("Display") program?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded 9.10 To 10.04 Now Cannot Boot

May 27, 2010

I upgraded 9.10 to 10.04 and now it won't boot. The way 9.10 used to boot was after turning on the computer it would go through the bios screen and then a screen would come up and list both operating systems, Windows Xp and Ubuntu. XP would be highlighted and would normally boot if I did not change the highlighted area. If I changed the highlighted area to Ubuntu it would boot into Ubuntu 9.10. Now after doing the upgrade, it gets to the same screen with the two operating systems listed.

When I change the highlighted to Ubuntu an error message is briefly displayed and then it goes back to the screen that lists both operating systems. I think the error message says something like couldn't find Ubuntu, or something similiar to that. Windows XP runs fine when I highlight Windows XP in that first screen, but I want to be able to run Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu on a secondary drive, but shouldn't it have rewritten the upgraded files on that same drive that had 9.10 on it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To 10.04 But Cannot Use Kernel 2.6.32-22.32+

Jun 20, 2010

I had upgraded to 10.04 but can not use kernel 2.6.32-22.32+, I had to go back to kernel 2.6.31-21. because of the default video driver had change from the one kernel to the other, and I do not know how the correct it. In 2.6.32-22 the font would change and to a smaller size and I can barely view anything because it looks like some two year old puke a box of crayons all over the screen.

Second issue is it does not matter what power-saving mode I am in, in 5 minutes time it with go into suspension. Or right after coming out of hibernate, it will go into suspension indefinitely and no coming out of it and must to a hard boot.
