I'm trying to upgrade, but have this issue: usually I download the DVD iso, run checksum, burn it, test the disk, and when found ok, I run the upgrade. Now, however, I keep getting "disk not ok" at 95% of the disk test. I have downloaded and verified the iso twice, used 2 DVD's, 2 different DVD-drives, 2 different computers and keep getting this error at 95%.

I think im getting this error because I didnt allocate enough space to the Ubuntu partition when I installed it. How do I allocate more space to the Ubuntu partition? If this is not possible, is it possible to install 10.04 from my Windows?

I just upgraded my F9 system to F10 using they preupgrade method, and though nothing seems to have failed during the upgrade I can't boot my system any longer.I have a completly encrypted system, and so I need to enter a passphrase at boot. The new F10 system does boot and I do get a Password: prompt but the passphrase is not accepted.My passphrase doesn't contain any odd characters to prevent problems with keyboard mappings. View 9 Replies View RelatedI followed the guideline 'How to use PreUpgrade' to upgrade F14 -> F15. What happened was that after reboot: 1. The screen was a mess ... no readable information 2. No reaction on pressing 'return' 3. The disk led showed no activity, so I reseted the computer after 5 minutes inactivity. The system came up but with F14. I repeated the 'preupgrade' and all messages are in [URL]... but still F14 comes up after reboot. Where have I missed ... eager to get F15
View 4 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Insprion 8600 as a dual boot to try out Ubuntu. I let the setup configure partitions for me. During the install, I was asked once for a password. Last week, Win XP would not boot up; that's OK as I was planning a re-partition and reinstall of both win and Ubuntu.
I wanted to get files off the NTFS partitions (I have one for win, one for the swap file and two more fore files etc.), so I wanted to mount the NTFS partitions. I was asked for a password for the administrator. My regular password, the only one I have set up, would not work. I tried rebooted two more times and still no luck with my only password.
However, I was able to boot up from the set-up disk and mount the NTFS partitions without a password. I was able to move all the files I needed to one partition that I plan to keep (I will reinstall win xp then back up those files on the separate partition).
A question and a comment...
1. How do I install Ubuntu so that I make sure I have the passwords to do administrative level things (like mounting a drive)?
2. Being able to do administrative work off the Ubuntu test-drive disk while being denied access after signing in seems like a security issue (unless I screwed up somewhere).
I'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:

This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.
I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.
I just upgraded via preupgrade-cli (from FC10), rebooted, the upgrade process completed, then the system rebooted and I just see a blinking white cursor now.I was able to boot up from a live cd of FC11, but I'm not sure how I can repair the system.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'd like to upgrade to 10.04 from Karmic but want to make sure it will leave me with a working system afterwards.
I figured a good way to test it is to create a disk image with dd and then try upgrading in VirtualBox using that image. The idea is that if it is successful, it'll probably be successful on the real machine too.
The only problem is my home partition, which is >1.4 TB. I don't have that much space left on any other hard disks. So I would like to somehow exclude certain directories in /home (or the entire partition) from appearing in the image.
Is this even possible? Or does anyone have any better ideas?
Was using preupgrade from FC11x64 to 12x64. Preupgrade caused alot of problems like /boot not enough diskspace. After some searching found the steps and preupgrade proceed happily but after reboot got kernel panic grrr.
Took 3 days to find another machine to download and burn the FC12x64 disk. So I booted via the FC12x64 disk and selected the 1st option to install/upgrade. I thought it is upgrade and so choose replace my existing linux system however it wiped out everything on the disk. I have some important data in my home directory. I think it is in LVM, not a partition like /dev/sda1. How can I recover them? Was using stock settings.
I attempted to do the upgrade from 11 to 12 with the Preupgrade Assistant. Unfortunatly something went terribly wrong. Everything went well, excluding the size of partition error, untill the reboot. I did have to remove two previous installs. Now grub gives me an option to upgrade to Fedora 12. When I select this the screen runs code quickly and the screen goes blank with alot of disk activity. Then nothing. Is there a method of recovering this install? I am fairly new to Linux Administration and I am just knowledgable enough to mess things up.

It found my previous installation than asked my what to do with my boot partition. I chose to upgrade it, rather than skip or whatever else, only to eventually be met with a message saying the partition is too small by 9M. Really ? This is a 100 MB partition. Is 100 MB now too small for a boot partition ?

But when I open "Add/remove software" of Fedora. I am greeted with " No space left on the disk" and when I seek for more details it says " Disk Error :[errno 5] Input/output error"I did some research and I saw that it usually occurs during installation, but here I have successfully installed it.Can someone help me with it? Later on I even had notification of the same warning. And mind you I got loads of free space.

I have had about 0% success getting everything to work correctly doing a fresh install of F9. Everything works correctly in F7( sound, firefox/flash, networking, samba, etc ), so I figure that starting with something know to work and upgrading to F9 might be a better approach that starting with F9 and having it guess.

So for each upgrade I've done the last 2 years I had to follow again these instructions to rebuild the initrd.
I've just finished the upgrade from F9 to F10 and I faced the following friendly message:

Allright, not a surprise in fact. While rebuilding the initrd I discovered there's no more /lib/i686/nosegneg/ directory in Fedora10's initrd. Therefore I reinstalled the libm-2.9.so library as follows:

I searched for posts reporting problems with segfault in ld-2.9.so but didn't find anything. So now I'm with a successfully upgraded fedora 10 system that refuses to boot.
By the way, I've done the upgrade using the netinstall CD, all the packages have been retreived online without errors and I think I've therefore the latest versions.
How to making this F10 box to start ?
Lately I was upgrading from F9 to F10 on my IBM thinkpad, everything looked good and in the end of the uppgrading prosess I got a messages witch told me that my upgrade was successfull and I was asked to reset the computer, but there my problems begin , after reset I only get black screen with the name name GRUB written in the up left corner of the screen and everything stopps there.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install F12 from the install DVD that I torrented but it's giving me a disk error when I try to install. The DVD loads but when I go to install, it crashes when loading initrd.img, saying:
isolinux: Disk error 10, AX = 4209, drive EF
Boot failed: press a key to retry...
The DVD iso does pass the SHA256 hash test, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I'm using Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 to write the DVDs, which it seems to do without any problems. The only thing I haven't ruled out is Roxio - is this the problem or is there something I'm missing? If it is the problem, any suggestions for a better free Windows DVD burning program I could use?

From what I can figure out, grub can not figure out which disk has my root file system. I checked the partition labels and they match the UUID that are in my fstab.
I tried upgrading from Fedora 8 to Fedora 10 using the DVD, but I ran into a few problems.After verifying the install media, it was no longer able to detect the DVD. Annoying, but I got around this by simply rebooting and then skipping the media check.The second problem happened after I tried to "upgrade an existing installation". It gives me the error "Multiple devices with label /boot detected. Devices must have unique labels in order for you system to work. Please correct this problem before upgrading".My system's working just fine, so I'm not sure why I'm getting this error. I have a RAID-1 setup, so would that be causing the error? How do I correct this problem without wiping out my system?

I typed in my user name and password and after a second it returns to the login screen. Im sure the username and password are correct. If i type in another password i get an error message. So how can i log in?

Then i got an upgrade wizzard and selected Fedora 10 and than reboot.
In the grub menu only one kernel is present which is the Fc10 so couldn't use the old one.
I've tried to edit the kernel with single for single user that works gives me a command line but im just not experienced enough to figure out how i can use the command line to login.
I386 install dvd, gets to the point where it needs to resolve packages and then anaconda crashes. http://jaojbre.users.sbb.rs/anacdump.txt contains detailed log file. Any idea?

I attempted to use preupgrade to upgrade from Fedora 12 to 14 using wireless connection. It seems, that upgrade finished successfully, except I am not unable to get to a GDM login. I updated SElinux to selinux-policy-3.9.7-10 and selinux-policy-targeted-3.9.7-10, and touch /.autorelabel overnight, I was able to login using GDM once. And that is all. After I boot, after Ctrl+Alt+F4, I can login to terminal.

I am a novice in Linux but due to my academic requirement I had to install Linux (Fedora 8). I have 2 hard disk's (80GB & 20GB), on the first HD which is 80GB I have Windows XP and the other one I partitioned and installed Linux. Now the first problem is that, whenever I start my PC I get a error which says "GRUB hard disk error", however when I restart the machine it's fine and gives me the boot options.
Secondly, the HD containing windows was affected by virus so I had to format & reinstall XP. Strangely after that I am not getting any boot options and it's like windows is the only 1 OS running. But on windows the partition on which Linux is installed in intact. So I assume something is deleted maybe the Linux boot file.

I run Ubuntu 9.10 on same system but now getting Error on installing Fedora 12 using a writeable CD to install that. A friend of mine install fedora from the same CD. I am using Pentium 4 2.40 GHz, 512MB Ram, Nvidia G-Force MX-440 SE. and a complete Partition of approx 10GB.In frist attempt CD was not able to boot, but after 3-4 trys CD was booted for couple of times and now it was not booting again. In that 2 trys, i got the same error as mentioned above.2. Before installing this I install ubuntu and it was running fine, but a little problem with that. Whenever I boot my system all things remain same but monitor settings went on 800*640. I usually set them to 1024*768 (Maximum my card can suppot).

Setup: Thinkpad T23 (dual boot) upgrade from fc10 using DVD iso.checked with checksum and burnt by K3b.
History/actions taken:
Burnt iso to DVD and install/upgrade froze "creating File System " froze after approximately 10 minutes.
(completely froze and had to use the power button!)
Checked disk OK on laptop, tried again, same fault.
Bought another DVD.(different die) and tried again, same fault.
Tried another laptop HD, (full install not dual boot) , same fault.
Removed partitions with fdisk, but still no luck.
Tried disk on a spare HD on my PC and it works, I get into the window allowing software selection!
Tried a "Linux Format" fc 10 disk and that works, also tried a PCLinux LXF disk which also worked.
The laptop does not report any problems at bootup and I do not not what else to try

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm a Linux newbie and are trying to install F13 from bootable USB onto the HD of a DELL mini netbook. I've followed the install wizard's defaults including the "Use All Space option." The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.
