Fedora Installation :: Unable To Upgrade To 10 Due To Duplicate Labels
Jan 25, 2009
I tried upgrading from Fedora 8 to Fedora 10 using the DVD, but I ran into a few problems. After verifying the install media, it was no longer able to detect the DVD. Annoying, but I got around this by simply rebooting and then skipping the media check. The second problem happened after I tried to "upgrade an existing installation". It gives me the error "Multiple devices with label /boot detected. Devices must have unique labels in order for you system to work. Please correct this problem before upgrading".My system's working just fine, so I'm not sure why I'm getting this error. I have a RAID-1 setup, so would that be causing the error? How do I correct this problem without wiping out my system?

I recently upgraded my x86_64 system from FC8 to FC10 using Pre-Upgrade. (related blog link) It appears that the upgrade process installed a steaming pile of i386 packages that are duplicates of existing x86_64 packages. I now get update errors because of this package clash. I have searched the fora and the most progress I've been able to make so far is: I apparently had 8 unfinished yum transactions so I did yum-complete-transaction 8 times and have no more incomplete transactions.
The output of package-cleanup --dupes is not very helpful:
Code:
[tim@servy ~]$ sudo package-cleanup --dupes
Setting up yum
Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit
Yet I still get transaction errors when I run updates via synaptic. It checks dependencies and downloads everything and errs when testing changes. This is the error it gives at the moment:
Code:
Test Transaction Errors: file /etc/gconf/schemas/gweather.schemas from install of libgweather-2.24.2-1.fc10.x86_64 conflicts with file from package gnome-applets-1:2.20.1-1.fc8.i386

I burned the Fedora 13 x64 DVD, booted from it, and attempted to upgrade my Fedora 12 x64 OS. It found my previous installation than asked my what to do with my boot partition. I chose to upgrade it, rather than skip or whatever else, only to eventually be met with a message saying the partition is too small by 9M. Really ? This is a 100 MB partition. Is 100 MB now too small for a boot partition ?

Who has successfully upgraded going from F7 x86_64 to F9 x86_64 using the yum approach? I have had about 0% success getting everything to work correctly doing a fresh install of F9. Everything works correctly in F7( sound, firefox/flash, networking, samba, etc ), so I figure that starting with something know to work and upgrading to F9 might be a better approach that starting with F9 and having it guess.

It's become a tradition since I've installed FC6 on my machine: after each Fedora upgrade, the PC hangs at reboot because of a badly make initrd !
I found this post a while ago that helped me to solve the problem by rebuilding the initrd with the right librairies in it: [url]
So for each upgrade I've done the last 2 years I had to follow again these instructions to rebuild the initrd.
I've just finished the upgrade from F9 to F10 and I faced the following friendly message:
Code:
Allright, not a surprise in fact. While rebuilding the initrd I discovered there's no more /lib/i686/nosegneg/ directory in Fedora10's initrd. Therefore I reinstalled the libm-2.9.so library as follows:
Code:
Once the initrd rebuilt, I rebooted and faced a second friendly message:
Code:
I searched for posts reporting problems with segfault in ld-2.9.so but didn't find anything. So now I'm with a successfully upgraded fedora 10 system that refuses to boot.
By the way, I've done the upgrade using the netinstall CD, all the packages have been retreived online without errors and I think I've therefore the latest versions.
How to making this F10 box to start ?

I upgraded to fedora 10 using yum but i have a problem, the installation went fine and after rebooting i got a login screen. I typed in my user name and password and after a second it returns to the login screen. Im sure the username and password are correct. If i type in another password i get an error message. So how can i log in?
This is what i did to upgrade to Fc10:
Code:
Then i got an upgrade wizzard and selected Fedora 10 and than reboot.
In the grub menu only one kernel is present which is the Fc10 so couldn't use the old one.
I've tried to edit the kernel with single for single user that works gives me a command line but im just not experienced enough to figure out how i can use the command line to login.

My system is Dell 4300S with 1.4 GHz Pentium processor, recently upgraded to 1 GB RAM,120 GB WDC1200JB hard drive Sony DRU-720A DVD/RW drive, ATT plugandshare wireless adapter with Atheros AR5001X chip, ATI Rage 128 Pro Ultra TF video card, and Actiontec V90, and 56KFlex modem (Agere System Venus). I attempted to use preupgrade to upgrade from Fedora 12 to 14 using wireless connection. It seems, that upgrade finished successfully, except I am not unable to get to a GDM login. I updated SElinux to selinux-policy-3.9.7-10 and selinux-policy-targeted-3.9.7-10, and touch /.autorelabel overnight, I was able to login using GDM once. And that is all. After I boot, after Ctrl+Alt+F4, I can login to terminal.

I cannot seem to get past the "creating File System.." window on a laptop upgrade
Setup: Thinkpad T23 (dual boot) upgrade from fc10 using DVD iso.checked with checksum and burnt by K3b.
History/actions taken:
Burnt iso to DVD and install/upgrade froze "creating File System " froze after approximately 10 minutes.
(completely froze and had to use the power button!)
Checked disk OK on laptop, tried again, same fault.
Bought another DVD.(different die) and tried again, same fault.
Tried another laptop HD, (full install not dual boot) , same fault.
Removed partitions with fdisk, but still no luck.
Tried disk on a spare HD on my PC and it works, I get into the window allowing software selection!
Tried a "Linux Format" fc 10 disk and that works, also tried a PCLinux LXF disk which also worked.
The laptop does not report any problems at bootup and I do not not what else to try

I'm trying to upgrade, but have this issue: usually I download the DVD iso, run checksum, burn it, test the disk, and when found ok, I run the upgrade. Now, however, I keep getting "disk not ok" at 95% of the disk test. I have downloaded and verified the iso twice, used 2 DVD's, 2 different DVD-drives, 2 different computers and keep getting this error at 95%.

I am attempting to upgrade Fedora 12 to 13. I get an error screen that said root could not be found. Four options are given. Not sure exactly their wording, but two appear to allow you to cancel the other two warn that if you reinitialize you will wipe out all data.
I have a Vista partition and a Fedora partition. I've added the vista ntfs partition to fstab with no help. All of the partition use the long UUID form. I added the root location (root (hd0,5) to the upgrade menu item in grub.conf and that didn't work either.
I'm reluctant to proceed for fear of initializing the entire drive. I could live with installing Fedora 13 over the existing partitions.

Prerequisites :
The GIMP.
Make sure you have the "Gutenprint Printer Drivers Package" and "GIMP plugin for gutenprint" installed (add/remove software, search for gutenprint). A printer that uses a tray loading mechanism for printing disc media.
Procedure :
Open/create the image with the GIMP. I find that an image size of 1394 x 1394 is ideal for normal size discs. To create a working area in the image, first create a white circle. To do this, use the circle selection tool and position the cursor at position 0,0 (top left). Then, while holding the shift key down, hold left click and drag the cursor to the bottom right position, which should be 1394,1394. Fill the selection with white colour. Depending on the hub size of your disc you need to also cut out an area in the centre of the white circle approximately 22 mm in diameter. Position the circle selection cursor 11mm above the centre of the image, and 11mm to the left of the centre of the image. Then hold Shift down, hold left click and drag the cursor until the selected area is 22mm x 22mm. Then cut the selection. Now create a new layer above the white circle and create your image, keeping inside the white circle and outside the centre "hole".
If you are using non full face discs, make the centre "hole" bigger accordingly. Create 2 new background layers, one black and one white. The black is so you can preview the image with the correct shape, and the white one is for use when exporting the final finished image for printing. Remember to make the white layer above the black layer, or make the black layer invisible when exporting the image. I have attached a template for your immediate use. Once your image is finished, you should have a white square image, with your graphics arranged within a circle. White is not printed, so you don't need transparency around the edges. Don't put graphics too close to the edges of the circle or you will get ink on the plastic which never dries. (at least not until you have smeared it on your fabulous artwork ! ) Save the file as the default GIMP xcf format to preserve the layers then export it to png.
To print the image onto the disc. With the image open in the GIMP, In File > Page Setup set the paper size to CD - 5 inch and apply. Then go to File > Print with Gutenprint. Use the option to set up printer and find your make and model. Once you have the correct printer selected, lots of extra options become available.
My Printer settings are:
Print Quality - Best
Media Type - Photo paper
Media Source - Print to CD
CD hub size - Normal
Ink Set - Epson Standard inks
Resolution - 720 dpi
Ink Type - 6 color photo
Page Size - CD - 5 inch
(All the other settings are left as default)
On the Output tab there are more options for adjusting the print quality. Just click "Adjust Output". If you have adjusted the output, close that window then click "Print and Save Settings", otherwise just click "Print and Save Settings". It should fire up straight away. These settings are based on my Epson R200, so you may have to tweak them for your printer model.

I can no longer access files in those directories (if I ls the directory, it appears empty; I can cd to it, but there's nothing inside). Not all of the directories are duplicated/damaged like this, but most are. A few non-directory files are also duplicated in this fashion, so for example:

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (upgraded from 9.10) and I can't find a way to upgrade to the new 10.04.1 version.
I've updated all the software sources, changed my country location to US, and even generated a new sources.list file, but my update manager never displays an option to make an upgrade to 10.04.1

when I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 I lost the ability to enable effects, lost the ability to use compiz and my screen got messed up and my video card driver wasn't working forcing me to re-install it several times. Even now my system doesn't totally work how it used to in 10.04.I want to avoid that in this upgrade. I downloaded the live cd since the wire upgrade took a bunch of hours. But my concern is the graphics, I want to be able to use effects since Unity uses effects, I have unity 2d installed but it doesn't work. So somehow enabling effects is a must.
what steps do I take to make the upgrade process as smooth as possible, I've already done my app updates so my system is current, I'll disable 3rd party ppa's like before but what else? Do I have to disable my video card driver so the live cd video card driver can be installed? How do I keep my setting as is but allow for all the 11.04 goodness to be installed?Or is erasing my current Ubuntu partition and reinstalling 11.04 fresh the best option?

I was using Evolution with 9.10, but it looks like none of that is on 10.04. Not too worried about the program itself, but I would like to have kept my contacts info and a few of the emails from the last couple of days.
