Recently installed Fedora 10 on a DELL XPS M1330 Laptop. JUST CANT GET WI-FI TO WORK!
I first installed the ndiswrapper using this command : # yum install kmod-ndiswrapper and that was fined.
Went to dell web-site and downloaded the driver for broadcom using the command: $ wget [url]
unzip followed by saving it to home dir...
Type the following command: cd /home/username/broadcom/
Type in this command and am not really sure what they do but i think it helps to configure the wi-fi dell driver.
Rebooted the computer and checked if the driver was installed using # ndiswrapper -l and came up with bcmwl5 : invalid driver!
Just haven't a clue of what to do, so i automatically re-install ndiswrapper and started again with the same error bcmwl5 : invalid driver! Tried other Dell broadcom driver and without any luck.
Issue: - Can't get suspend to work correctly... - What I need is to be able to either:press Fn+Esc or Fn+F1 to get the computer to suspend
Current situation:
- So last time I learned ACPI and HAL doesn't work nicely togheter - My solution was to disable ACPI. (This gets things working, but not to my satisfaction)... - Currently if I press Fn+F1 this calls: pm-hibernate This takes quite some time, and annoys me. - I want to use: pm-suspend - But I haven't figure out how...? - If I configure power options through gnome-power-management and set the option to Suspend when I press Sleep...
I get the following behavior:
+ PC goes to Hibernate + When I Resume ("thaw"), this goes ok but.. + PC goes back to hibernate automatically.... + Need to resume to get it back up....
I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Opensuse 11.2 and Windows Vista Business in a dual boot hard disk.
I was using Fedora 11 before Opensuse, and it was fast and performed well. However I installed Opensuse because I like KDE 4.3 and this is the best KDE distro.
After the last kernel update my system lost initrd, I restored creating an initrd with chroot, mount and mkinitrd from a rescue disk. After first boot, I reinstalled the kernel update, so the initrd was replaced by the new one created in the update.
However, my system is very slow, I don't know where to look for bad configuration or anything else. The boot process took 220 seconds.
I'm trying to get HDMI audio to play from my Dell XPX M1330 laptop through a HDMI cable to my Sony Bravia TV. This is a dual booted laptop. Booting into Windows 7 on the same laptop and streaming the desktop through HDMI cable to the TV shows up on the TV just fine, including sound through the TV's speakers.
However, when booting into my Debian laptop, with the HDMI cable already plugged in, I am able to play the videos, but no sound comes out of the TV's speakers. (plugging in the HDMI cable after logging into Gnome hangs up the entire system and I have to cold boot; setting that problem aside for now).
Since Windows 7 can figure this out, I consider this just something I don't have configured properly.
What do I need to do in order to enable sound to be piped through HDMI to the TV's speakers?
System details are shown below:
Pavucontrol Configuration tab dropdown indicating it is not sensing, or doesn't know about, the HDMI hardware:
cat /etc/debian_version shows 7.8
Output of aplay -l is:

My Dell Vostro 1520's Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card must not have been set-up correctly, as the Network Manager won't even let me select the wireless tab. Please just explain to me, step by step, what exactly I must do to make it work! Additionally, I can't figure out how to disable my Touchpad's Tap to Click funtionality, which must be done if I'm to effectively use my current KDE installation of openSUSE
today my windows crashed and i decided to move into Linux. But here comes my biggest problem now, i cannot connect to wireless network but i am able to connect through wired connectionmine is a 10 year old computer so i think the card used is Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABGi am using Fedora 14. please note that i know only very little in Linux so please respond accordingly
I am using a dell laptop which has Dell 1397 802.11B/G Wireless Mini Card. I not able to connect to internet and was not able to detect what actual problem is weather card is not supported (i.e. drivers are not available) .
Also, if any one can point to exact process to connect to wireless Lan using fedora12.
I have the required drivers from this website: Broadcom.com - 802.11 Linux STA driver As far as I can tell I have followed all the instructions given by the readme, I have all kernel packages that I had understood to be required but when I try to make the Makefile I am given this:
borgs0@linux-yjl1:~/hybrid_wl> make KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd` make[1]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.34-12-desktop/build' make[1]: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. make[1]: Leaving directory `/lib/modules/2.6.34-12-desktop/build' make: *** [all] Error 2
I have a Dell inspiron 1420 and its set up as a dual boot. Windows/Fedora.I cant get the wireless card to work. I review some previous posts but still cant get it working.
I did a /sbin/lspci Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4310 USB Controller (rev 01)
I did $rpm -q b43-fwcutter b43-fwcutter-011-3.fc9.i386
I took the plunge and made a clean install of 10.04 because it sounded cool (and it is, I like it!) and now I'm tied to a wall again I've gone through several of the broadcom wireless card tutorials on the forums and the only thing I've managed to get is a lit up wifi light. It's not detecting an active unsecured network several inches away, that has computers up and running on it... I'm perfectly willing to post more details as needed.
I just got a new laptop...Dell Vostro 3500. Took off Win put on Ubuntu...all went fine. I did all updates and app downloads using my WIRED NETWORK as wireless wasnt working. However I was more interested in setting up the new computer. Anyway so after all is installed up pops "Broadcom STA Wireless driver" Proprietary driver do you want to install. Obviously I said yes...
Well now My wireless is working great but for some reason my Wired (auto eth0) no longer works. It just says disconnected and its grayed in. I'm pretty much a newbie but did try a few things like:
apt-get update apt-get "something" essential (thats not a command just from memory it was something like that)
However I've had no luck. This Broadcom driver seems to have knocked out my wired network.
I am a first time Linux user - though I've Unix and Windows experience. So though I can follow your most tech instructions, I'll need some hand-holding.
Need help getting my wireless network to work on my newly installed Oracle Linux on Dell laptop.
Not sure what wireless card is installed, or it's mac address (though I can boot into windows and get that info, I don't want to - it'll be kind of a let down if I can't fix it all thru Linux).
Install has detected a Broadcom wired card, but not the wireless. Funny thing is that it detected the Bluetooth.
I have loaded Fedora 10 (do i need 11 now?) on my Lenovo T-60 laptop. but---went to connect to my wireless and it won't. it's enabled and i have done most things i can think of. which shouldn't be a lot to connect. So--is there a trick here? i was using PCLinux2009 before and it connected with no problem immediately.
Ubtuntu 10.04. I'm simply trying to run through this fix [URL]. But I'm not getting very far. Where do I unpack the files to? And once I've edited the wl_linux.c file, how do I compile it? I'm new to Ubuntu and I've been at this for days now, here's my previous issue before I ended up with this one [URL]. I thought Linux based software was supposed to be reasonably trouble free? I've been trying to get my laptop up and running for close to a week now, I had less trouble with Windows!
I am new to this and have no idea what I am to do.....I had Fedora 14 installed on my computer. I have Centurylink as my Internet network. Is there someone who can tell me how to get connected to my centurylink wireless network?
Just installed 11.04. Before install, during live cd preview, it detected my dell wireless card and offered to install a Broadcom (as I remember) proprietary driver. However, after a proper install, it did not make the same offer and left no wireless available.
i have a dell inspiron 15r that i plan on running fedora on, however, today i booted fedora from a live cd and it was completely oblivious to the fact that i have a wireless card, obviously i need certain drivers for it, problem is i dont know what drivers those would be, or where to get them, http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/inspiron-15r/pd this is my laptop model, and it says i have a "Standard Dell Wireless 1501 802.11 g/n" wireless card, if anyone could tell me how to get this working,
I am doing network config of my laptop. I'm new to Fedora, so I'm not sure how it goes ... I have an Ethernet device (eth0) and a wireless device, wlan0 Status in system->administration->network: Tab devices: eth0 : active wlan0: inactive Tab Hardware: eth0: system wlan0: configured (description: b43)
Double clicking on the wlan0 line gets you to Network Adapters Configuration, where adapter b43 grayed out) is associated with device wlan0. So far, so good (I did all the fwcutter stuff, so I assume this is the result). When I installed the system (from installcd, then update, then install broadcom-wl, ...) I configured it to be started up with network manager, automatically on startup. I managed to get it working exactly once in that session.
Problem is, it doesn't start up and the wireless is not even visible when you click the network manager icon. For that matter, eth0 does not start automatically either, but at least there is a button to start it in network manager. Coming back to the tab devices, clicking on wlan0 allows you to click on the activate button ... but there it says: Cannot activate network device wlan0! b43 device wlan0 does not seem to be present.
During the installation process, configure the network installation process requires, as a result of my wireless network card can not be drived, It is not possible to continue with the installation, please help me.
i can use internet in my Laptop. My laptop is only connected with wireless. No cable connection avilable here. Wireless is functioning well in windows 7 but in openSuSe 11.2 it is not functioning. I've searched on this issue in net and found that i've to install Packman repository or install driver from broadcom website. Please help me by giving easy way to do so. Following is the detail of my wireless device and some other information.
Code: linux-gkpt:~ # lspci -v 0b:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) Subsystem: Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16 Memory at efdfc000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2 Capabilities: [58] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
The internal wireless is not being detected, so I bought a DLink Nano. In following the driver install guides I receive the following error when trying to create drivers;
make make ARCH=i386 CROSS_COMPILE= -C /lib/modules/2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686/build M=/home/username/Downloads/rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.6.0.201011
I've recently burned Fedora 15 into a CD, in order to install from there onto my computer. However, when boot into Fedora, my wireless doesn't work, instead, it says that firmware is missing.I have had exactly the same problem installing other Linux distros, such as Ubuntu. When I consulted the support at Ubuntu, they were unable to solve the problem. The 'missing firmware' problem is exactly the same in other Linux distros, so I'm pretty much guessing that it's the same problem and is due to my wireless card incompatibility or something.
I did an inplace upgrade on my Dell Latitude X1 from Fedora 14 to 15 using dist-sync as per instructions on the website. It was not entirely smooth but I believe all the packages are now present and correct. Initially, about half the packages were still on f14 and the machine barely booted. I booted single user (nothing else was possible) and persuaded yum to fetch & install the rest.I was using wicd on 14 to connect wirelessly and it "just worked". I used wicd because I found NetworkManager didn't work.
On upgrade to 15, wicd now fails, and NetworkManager still does.icd i get an authentication failure, though the pw is correct. The only clue in the logs I can see is that wicd complains of not finding python-iwscan, and doesn't seem happy in using dhclient. Of course p-iwscan isn't in Fedora. Is p-iwlib similar? For wlassistant onnect failed.NetworkManager is currently refusing to acknowledge the existence of wireless on the machine, though occasionally it has addmitted the possibility. Then however I can neither scan for an SSID nor enter one manually ** Using iwconfig and setting the key manually *appears* to connect to the AP, but dhclient won't get IP data for it (if I ask nicely, it appears to try but isn't transmitting anything)The wireless card is an Intel ipw2200 chipset built into the X1. The ethernet port is working ok now, using a Broadcom chip.
I have a Dell D420 that I successfully upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10. Everything looks fine except there is no LAN or wireless working. I upgraded the BIOS to the latest version (A06) and there are no proprietary drivers listed under System/Administration/Additional drivers.
when I plug the LAN cable into the 420, the indicator cycles for a long time but eventually displays the red exclamation mark.
if i press the function key(FN) and F2 wireless disables but it wont renable if i press the button combo again.the only way so far i have managed to reenable wireless was to reboot.
