I just installed a dualboot win7/F15 on my laptop (dell XPS 15) and everything seems to be working fine except that when I connect to my network it is connected and the network is accessible (I can visit my gateway/ router) but when I try to visit a website it simply never ends loading it.Internet is working on win7 so it isn't my network's fault.Now I found somewhere that updating could help but since I dont have internet I can't update

Unfortunately, when I put the PCMCIA card in, nothing happens. On Windows, a green light flashes even if the card is not connected to any network. At first I thought this might be a hardware issue, so I did #lspci and got:

Lo and behold, when I put a different unbranded Wireless PC Card in it works. I'm no expert in Networks, but to me this suggests a driver problem (i.e. the card is physically detected it just won't work). However, the correct driver was installed with ndisgtk and this was verified with #ndiswrapper -l, hence the confusion.
I'd be grateful if anyone else has had this problem/knows of this problem and is willing to share the solution with me/point me in the right direction. So far, Google has returned a few posts from a few years ago talking about patching kernels and manually building files etc (just before Prism54 became integrated into the Linux kernel).
I have a compaq cq40-133tu laptop. I have windows vista ultimate and ubuntu 9.10 parallely installed. Most of the time i use Ubuntu for programming purpose. But for internet connection i have to go to windows. This is because ubuntu is getting connected to the network but is unable to access internet, whereas the windows can. I want to totally abandon windows. Recently i got internet connection in ubuntu for just 15 minutes or so when i ticked the option AVAILABLE TO ALL USERS. but after that the same story continues and iam not able to access internet. Details about Internet connection: This is not my connection, these signals come from nearby building. Its a wifi open public network.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a WET54g bridge that I am trying to get connected to a wireless network that only allows DHCP. The idea behind it is that I would like to connect the Cat6 out of the bridge to a switch allowing multiple wired computers to connect to the wireless network. The bridge will easily connect to the network once I put the WEP key in, however, there is a kink after that. When I connect the Cat6 to my computer and request an IP for that computer, it self assigns. This tells me that it is not talking to the wireless network through the bridge.
I can not find which IP address the bridge was assigned so that I can talk to it. The sub net is 255.255.240.0 which leaves quite a few possibilities. I know that the bridge is, however talking to the wireless network because the light is steady on the front of it which indicates just that. One other thing to stack on is that I know that there is a "splash page" which comes up when any computer connects. You click on the agreement and then you are allowed onto the network. How can I get my computer to talk through the bridge to the wireless network?

Everything seems to be working fine except it's not getting connected to wireless network, although it's detected the network .It was working fine(got connected to wireless network) when I had installed the same OS via virtual machine.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 10.10 the day it came out, and haven't had any problems with internet stuff. My wireless card works without any proprietary drivers. Last night, the computer stopped connecting to the internet. I am still connected to my wifi network, but I can't do anything online. I had assumed that my internet connection was just down in general, and tried resetting the computer, shutting down the computer and then turning it on again, and rebooting the modem, but then my Xbox connected, and my laptop running 10.04 connected, so I'm confused as to what is going in. Any ideas?

It does connect to the router, but when I open a page it does not load it...
It works ok with the ethernet cable.
Edit: after restoring from sleeping mode, it does not see any wireless network, I have to reboot.
if i'm connected to my wireless network it only gives me internet acces for a few minutes. The connection with my network stays but i have to close it back of and reconnect before i get back online.

The system tells me that I am connected to my wireless network, but firefox does not browse, indicating that it cannot find the network. Laptop - Dell Vostro 1520
OS - Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
Issue - My wifi connects to the network properly and shows connection established. But I am not able to browse. I tried ping and I didn't got any response. But I was able to get response when I use ethernet (wired connection) and I am able to browse. No issues with wifi card as my wifi is working properly from Windows and with the same network. I did a complete update again before posting this and it is yet to be resolved. Here are the output of some commonly asked outputs with wifi enabled and connected:

I can connect to my school's wireless network using the standard network manager, but often (not always) it repeatedly disconnects and reconnects every few minutes. Occasionally it also prompts me for the security information again (even after it previously connected successfully).
By running iwconfig when it's on the fritz, I can see that it's often switching access points for the network - which is what I think is causing the problem. It disconnects and reconnects even when the signal strength for the current AP is fine, and it will often switch to an AP with a weaker signal strength.

I have internet access using mobile broadband and i also have a wireless network for home usage without internet access.
When my wireless network is connected every application in ubuntu (Meerkat) tries to use it for inernet access (as neededobviously). As soon as i disconnect from the wireless network (and assuming the mobile broadband is on) everything has access to the internet again using the mobile brodband.
How do i tell ubuntu that i don't want it to use my wireless network for internet access?
I have one major problem that is going to cause me to switch back to windows. My wireless network shows connected and works fine for a while but periodically stops working. It always says it is connected but sometimes stops working to where I have to disconnect and reconnect for it to start back up again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a wireless network (192.168.1.0) that's bridged to the Internet and a wired one (192.168.0.0) that's only local. When I am connected to both networks, Natty wants to route my Internet traffic through the wired, local-only one.
Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?
I installed Fedora 15 today and after a few very long hours finally got the broadcom driver to work and my laptop is now connected to my router. Yay! But now when I try going to a website in firefox it says server not found. I can ping anything inside my network but when I try to ping outside the network, for example google, it says ping: unknown host google.com. So I thought it might be a DNS problem but the network settings point to the router for DNS so I'm not sure what else could be wrong. All of the other settings look correct.

So--is there a trick here? i was using PCLinux2009 before and it connected with no problem immediately.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter doing updates a few days ago yumex stopped working. I started getting an error message when I try to run it, "no connected to a network". This is of course not true.
I've looked at yumex.conf and don't see anything wrong, and I downgraded the GTK2 packages from a post indicating a segfault issue with one of those packages.
yum works fine from the command line, so my system is fully updated.
I removed yumex and then reinstalled it with no joy.
I am closing this thread and ask this question in the "Network and Wireless" area. As for the installation of 10.04 - wonderful. However, my problem is not an installation problem. Ubuntu 10.04 - Fresh install on machine with no previous OS it was a beautiful install experience. I have a Linksys WUSB54GC little plug in thing that is in one of the USB ports At the top of the screen it says that the computer is connected to the network genevapubliclibrary 100%
But when I access firefox, there is no internet connection. I checked the Preferences, Advanced, Network tab, Connection and the Settings button. It is set to "No Proxy". This is the same setting as our library laptop - also wireless - in firefox but using vista. If this has been addressed elsewhere, I apologize. I tried looking for linksys wusb54gc but no one had this problem.
Loaded Debian Jessie (x64) and when adding printers, can see my printer which attached ok to my RaspberryPi and can print thru it, but can not attach to my Jessie box. If it adds, it can't see it or reports printer is busy, tried every config I could find on the web. Previous versions of Debian I loaded the canon print driver separately and loaded the cnij(?) filter. Do I still have to do that? Is there a trick to getting a network canon to work?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying out the fedora live cd but I couldn't get my Internet to work. When I open firefox it always said server not kind no matter what I searched or put into the address bar:
I tried many different things but none o them worked
I am able to ping m router an I'm able to login to my routers page
I am also able to login to my modems page and it says connected to the Internet
I tried restarting the modem and the router but I still got the same problem
I also tried disabling the firewall but still had the same problem
I tried a command and I was able to receive packets from google.com, but It never went through in firefox
I also tried out a torrent (I had it saved on a USB) and it worked it was downloading fine
I am able to ping googles web page but I am not able to search anything.
In firefox preferences and in network proxy I tried many different proxy settings bit none o them worked I always get the message server not found. All this was done while connected directly with Ethernet cable modem and router but untried wireless and it didn't work either on the top right corner of the screen the network icon says auto eth0 active. I'm using fedora 12 livecd.
I've recently salvaged a computer I found gathering dust in the basement and decided I'll have it running on Fedora (I have a summer studentship coming up that needs Linux use so I thought I'd best start learning!). Following a clean install, Fedora can see the wireless network just fine. I try to connect and nothing happens. Half of the time it will ask for the PSK (yes, I promise I'm entering it correctly) and the other half of the time it will just stop. When it does ask for the PSK I enter it (correctly) and it will ask me again... and again.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to boot my laptop in text mode while it is not connected to a network. A message keeps popping up " eth0 ... negotiating". Does anyboy know how to turn it off? I tried "ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off. It still won't stop. I had tried editing /etc/sysconfig/network and turning off networking by NETWORKING=no. Still the same.
When I boot in the graphic mode, this problem of pesky message does not come out. I want to use the text mode since I will use my computer for editing documents and will be using vi only. In the text mode, when I plug it to a network, the persistent message stops but returns the minute I unplug the network. I want to use it unplug to the network since I will not have access to a network all the time. By the way, I am using Fedora 11. I am using a wired DSL network. My computer can do wireless but i had it disabled or switched off.
Recently installed Fedora 10 on a DELL XPS M1330 Laptop. JUST CANT GET WI-FI TO WORK!
I first installed the ndiswrapper using this command : # yum install kmod-ndiswrapper and that was fined.
Went to dell web-site and downloaded the driver for broadcom using the command: $ wget [url]
unzip followed by saving it to home dir...
Type the following command: cd /home/username/broadcom/
Type in this command and am not really sure what they do but i think it helps to configure the wi-fi dell driver.
Rebooted the computer and checked if the driver was installed using # ndiswrapper -l and came up with bcmwl5 : invalid driver!
Just haven't a clue of what to do, so i automatically re-install ndiswrapper and started again with the same error bcmwl5 : invalid driver! Tried other Dell broadcom driver and without any luck.
I'd like to know if network-manager applet could be run on gdm login menu. Cause i would like to get connected on my network to reach kerberos serveur to login. nm-applet on gdm
