I have loaded Fedora 10 (do i need 11 now?) on my Lenovo T-60 laptop. but---went to connect to my wireless and it won't. it's enabled and i have done most things i can think of. which shouldn't be a lot to connect. So--is there a trick here? i was using PCLinux2009 before and it connected with no problem immediately.

I first installed the ndiswrapper using this command : # yum install kmod-ndiswrapper and that was fined.
Went to dell web-site and downloaded the driver for broadcom using the command: $ wget [url]
unzip followed by saving it to home dir...
Type the following command: cd /home/username/broadcom/
Type in this command and am not really sure what they do but i think it helps to configure the wi-fi dell driver.
Rebooted the computer and checked if the driver was installed using # ndiswrapper -l and came up with bcmwl5 : invalid driver!
Just haven't a clue of what to do, so i automatically re-install ndiswrapper and started again with the same error bcmwl5 : invalid driver! Tried other Dell broadcom driver and without any luck.
I am new to this and have no idea what I am to do.....I had Fedora 14 installed on my computer. I have Centurylink as my Internet network. Is there someone who can tell me how to get connected to my centurylink wireless network?

I have an Ethernet device (eth0) and a wireless device, wlan0
Status in system->administration->network:
Tab devices:
eth0 : active
wlan0: inactive
Tab Hardware:
eth0: system
wlan0: configured (description: b43)
Double clicking on the wlan0 line gets you to Network Adapters Configuration, where adapter b43 grayed out) is associated with device wlan0. So far, so good (I did all the fwcutter stuff, so I assume this is the result). When I installed the system (from installcd, then update, then install broadcom-wl, ...) I configured it to be started up with network manager, automatically on startup. I managed to get it working exactly once in that session.
Problem is, it doesn't start up and the wireless is not even visible when you click the network manager icon. For that matter, eth0 does not start automatically either, but at least there is a button to start it in network manager. Coming back to the tab devices, clicking on wlan0 allows you to click on the activate button ... but there it says: Cannot activate network device wlan0! b43 device wlan0 does not seem to be present.
During the installation process, configure the network installation process requires, as a result of my wireless network card can not be drived, It is not possible to continue with the installation,please help me.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am having a little trouble connecting to my wireless network. Running Fedora 10 32 bit.I'm trying to connect to a hidden wireless network. I updated the firmware for my driver but apparantly the driver is still not working. Broadcom has a driver from their website for Linux 32 bit systems. Should I attempt to install it? I read a post where the driver is built into the system kernel. If so I would need to blacklist the one of the drivers. Correct?

I happened to Fedora 13 that the network manager does not indicate any wifi network and I had to turn off the notebook for a while and then recover, this also happened to me 2 or 3 times on ubuntu 10.04 too. my card is an Atheros AR5007EG.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI accidentally clicked on a wireless network once and now every time I boot up, it tries to connect to that network and asks for the password. I have to keep pressing cancel and then it connects to my regular network.
I tried fiddling around with the network settings but I couldn't see any place where I could remove that network from the 'List of preferred networks' or at least try to prevent it from connecting automatically.
How to remove this network from the list of preferred networks? Edit some file somewhere maybe?

I have been uninstalling, reinstalling, .... for about the past 14 hours and finally I realize I need help. First, I am trying to install the latest Ubuntu 10.04.1 (64-bit) on a Windows 7 laptop (HP Pavilion).
I did have 10.04 running for a few months on this laptop but when I recently upgraded to ver. .... 32-24 things started to go wrong. Suddenly, I could no longer even bootup Ubuntu ...32-24. But, I was able to use ...32-23 or ...32-21 which were also on my machine. Then in trying to fix ...32-24 all my installed versions of Ubuntu 10.04 became unbootable. I tried many suggestions (see my postings on this yesterday and today on the Ubuntu forum -- General help) .
I realized that this was hopeless after many attempts. I could not bootup, even from my bootable Ubuntu CD. I then decided to just begin from scratch and install the latest downloadable Ubuntu --- I started with this early this morning. This went rather smooth; but, no matter how many reinstallations I did, I could never make a wireless connection to the network. Note, the same wireless hardware and settings were used as in the previous working versions of Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 (on the same machine) --- I have not made any hardware changes.
I am sending this message from my desktop PC which has Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit) and again, I have carefully checked and verified that the setting for my wireless connection to the internet are identical for both (this desktop and my laptop). However, I am still unable to make a wireless network connection on my laptop!
What can I do to get my wireless network working on my laptop with the latest download of Ubuntu 10.04.1? It could be that this latest download of Ubuntu 10.04.1 does not have the necessary drivers/software for the wireless network. But, it was ok in the previous downloadable --- I had been using it for a couple of months with no problems at all. Is it possible to reinstall 10.04 vers. ...32-23 rather that 10.04.1 vers. ...32-24? I could not find this on the Web.
I just started using Ubuntu 10.10 recently. and Im not really sure how most of this stuff works. I could probably figure most of it out myself, but I have a question about using a wireless USB stick for internet.I do not have internet on my desktop (the computer with linux on it) and the only way i can get it is by using a Dynex Wireless G USB Network Adapter.
I do not have the disk for it. and Im guessing linux doesnt have the autoinstall thing that windows has (no offense to linux, im starting to love it more than windows). I have the driver for it on my windows computer. I was wondering if i could run the driver from a usb thumb drive.If not, then how can i get the network adapter to work?

I suggested for my friend to install ubuntu on her new pc because she does not have access to a Windows disk. I am somewhat familiar with Linux but I have never actually used it. She says she made the install disk and installed ubuntu just fine. When she went to intall her wireless network card cd it would not work. Please tell me what to do so I can instruct her on how to set these up to make them work.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI must be able to perform customized (non distribution-default) (re)installations of Linux fairly often. As such, I have been looking for a distribution which would allow me to automate the process. CentOS's usage of the Anaconda installer permitting the use of kickstart files, coupled with its stability, maturity, etc. seems to be what I have been looking for. I would like to be able to use the netinstall media in order to perform up-to-date kickstart installations (i.e. grab the 'latest' updates targeting CentOS 5, rather than installing the 5.4 versions and upgrading the system after the first boot).
The wiki seems to provide instructions on creating up-to-date media. However; this is less than ideal, because it would mean burning new media every time I need to (re)install. I realize that finding out if this is possible or not is a simple matter of grabbing the netinstall ISO, burning it and seeing if it supports a direct up-to-date install (or not). However, this is where I run into another problem. The machine in question uses a broadcom wireless card and, as such, would have to make use of it during the installation. I can get the card to work properly on an installed system via the bcm43xx kernel module + 3rd party firmware (extracted to /lib/firmware/ via bcm43xx-fwcutter).
I do not know if it is possible to modify the netinstall ISO so as to load this module (and the modules it depends on) automatically -and- somehow add the necessary files to /lib/firmware/. To summarize (in hopes of clarifying if the long version is confusing) :
1. Can the netinstall media be used to directly install an up-dated system?
2. Can the netinstall media be reworked in order to automatically load the bcm43xx module and can the firmware files be added to the /lib/firmware/ directory of the.. system booted from the media?
After a few years of being a fedora user on a large network, I final decided to bite the bullet and dual-boot my home desktop (solely XP at the time) with fedora 10 on Saturday. The installation seemed to go well, but I am having a few problems, which solved themselves at one point but have come back and I have no idea why.
- I installed and re-partitioned with the install DVD, giving fedora 20GB. Having read a few guides and forum posts I wasn't surprised when the wifi and ATI graphics card didn't work. They appeared in the output of lspci, but I couldn't change the screen resolution and no wireless card was available.
- I bought a new wireless card a while ago but hadn't had time to put in so used this opportunity to do so (installed it in XP to check it worked) and when I rebooted, guess what, the resolution was what I wanted and I could see all the networks in the neighbourhood. I connected, downloaded/installed the myriad of updates together with a couple of programes through yum and went to bed a happy man.
- This morning (my router needed rebooting and after) I was back to the same as before the new wireless card, i.e. low resolution and no wifi. Having no idea what had happened, I check for loose connections, after that the resolution returned and the wifi worked but I can't see my home network.
I have a mainly windows house with a notebook running Fedora 11. The problem is that when this computer is on the wireless network it shows no computers on the network. It gives me the error that it can't retrieve the shared list from server. However when I am using it on the wired part of the same network it will see all of the other computers. I was wondering if anyone here could shed light on what might be going on. I am not sure if it is a setting on the computer or something to do with the router. However I don't think it has anything to do with the router because I have windows laptops that run on the same wireless access point and have no problem
View 7 Replies View RelatedI picked up a cheap PC the other day for �20 and it came with a Belkin N Wireless USB adapter. I know the adapter works because Windows XP was originally installed and I could connect with no problems. I wasn't able to connect when I installed Kubuntu so I thought I'd see if I could have any more luck with Fedora....so far, not so good! I realise that this is a fairly common problem, especially for this USB adapter, but I've tried dozens of threads here and elsewhere and still can't get Fedora online.I can see the wireless networks in the list, but if I try and connect then I just repeatedly get asked to enter the authentication details, which I know I'm providing correctly.

I am not (I repeat "not") an experienced Linux-user, so maybe I need to get things with a spoon here, but the wireless networking in Mandriva is similar to the one in Fedora, and in Mandriva it worked fine, in Fedora I cant get connected. It just ask me for the password over and over again. Now I am on cabel, and that works fine.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Fedora 15 on my notebook, I found that the one thing that I am unable to do is connect to a hidden encrypted wireless network automatically. I've seen plenty of people inquiring about this online but have found no solution. I can set up whatever I want to in my settings (using the old gnome2 interface setup, the gnome3 interface setup leaves the wireless options unconfigurable for some reason so I can't do anything with the "Network Name" dropdown)
All of my settings have been set up using the network manager from gnome2, but that doesn't seem to translate to my gnome3 desktop. So, is there any way to get the wireless to connect automatically on startup? I know my wireless card is working when I start my computer because it shows some of the networks in the area and I can connect to a few of the unprotected networks. This is the only problem I have with gnome3.
EDIT: from dmesg, I find the following: [485.63] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
EDIT #2: Going into the network settings just to play around with it, I discovered that the network name dropdown box appears to be grayed out, but now it works when I click it (didn't the first time) -- this allowed me to connect to my hidden wireless network. Still however, it does not connect automatically (system default is the hidden wireless network) and I still have the DNS problem
I have upgraded to Fedora 15 but cannot get wireless up and running. When i switch on wireless and choose the connection it tries for 15 seconds before prompting me for the password and continues like this. When i check the device in my network config it shows as being inactive. Ralink device 3060

View 9 Replies View RelatedI got a development machine with Apache installed. Everything was configured correctly, machine was running perfectly for some time, but today, suddenly I lost connection to my Wireless network.
Now I simply...can't access it. All details are correct, I even turned off MAC Addresses validation to make sure it's not my AP configuration fault. Nothing helped.
Any ideas what could happen? I did not update any libraries/packages. Just got disconnected from my network and cannot access it anymore.
To give more informations: I'm using Broadcom wireless device and b43 driver but I don't think this can be an error. Logs tell me nothing.

During the installation, a message occured to ask me to load a firmware (rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin) which is loaded from a USB key.After this, Debian-installer seems to find my wireless card but can not find wireless network.I have this message, translated from French: "The search for an available wireless network failed" and I can enter an ESSID but inconclusive.
I'm at wits end...10.04 won't connect to a wireless network on my laptop, and that sort of makes it useless. What is the easiest way to revert back to 9.10? I have a dual-boot system with XP and I'd rather not have to start from scratch.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Acer Aspire running dual boot Ubuntu 9.10 and Vista. Although it has an Atheros wireless card (AR5001 according to linux, AR5007 according to Vista) until recently I didn't have any apparent problems with it.I installed a ZTE MF112 Mobile Broadband Dongle. Now I am experiencing great difficulty in communicating with my wireless router (with both LAN and WAN traffic). Connecting to the network in the first place appears to happen quite smoothly and my computer obtains a DHCP IP address. However the ping response times are measurable in seconds rather than the milliseconds I would expect, and any traffic across the network crawls, or just times out and fails.
I do not believe it is the router at fault as two laptops, both also with Ubuntu, can connect to it fine and swapping it out for another router does not fix the problem either. Also there is no problem connecting from Vista.I suspect that installing the dongle has altered something which has made the bugs in the wireless card/drivers apparent and that's where I need some help.
I tried fix I pointed here http://fedoramobile.org/Members/MrHappy/troubleshootingNetworkManager fails to see wireless networks with Intel 3945 chipsets(solution deals with the kernel module not with NetworkManager)but nothing to do. My actual problem is I can't see my wireless network but I see just those of my neighbours.I know mine is working because I can connect to using a Mac and windows.

But I have to do this every time I boot the machine. Ideally, I want the machine to do this on it's own at startup.
Also, I'm totally new to linux and I don't really understand what the 1st line of code is doing? The 2nd is just to check that the 1st line worked, and the 3rd does the settings for the wireless network I'm connecting to.
If you want to get into why I have to do this every time, then look at my original thread. But I started this new thread just to find out how I can get these lines of code done automatically at startup.
