Dec 31, 2009after a fresh installation of the English version (Live CD installer) of Fedora 12 (Gnome) I would like to set the default system language to German.But I would like to have the whole Gnome desktop in German. What is the recommended place in Fedora to set this? /etc/profile or are there any Fedora specific configuration files for this purpose?Btw, the GDM login screen doesn't provide the German language as a choice. Do I miss a package? I already browsed the DE packages for localization packages I did not install but it seems there is no one missing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFedora Installation :: VNC Level 3 Installation - Remote Into The System Via My Windows Xp Systems
Sep 15, 2009What I'm trying to do at this point is setup VNC so I can remote into the system via my windows xp systems. I have VNC installed on those computer and I was able to get GNOME's remote desktop operating when I log in on level 5 and actually logged into my user account. However, when I'm not logged in on level 5 it will reject connections entirely. Ultimately I want to remote into the system using tightVNC and view the level 3 (command line only) thing, and allow me to telinit - 5 to switch to gui if I need it from VNC on the windows system. This way I don't need a monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged into the server. Right now that's what I'm having to do.
The problem is that it doesn't run in level 3 at all and level 5 (gui mode) doesn't work if i'm not logged into an account. So how can I get this to work at as a constant running server no matter what level and login point i'm at? Ultimately for this Linux admin class I have to setup a working server and I figured I'd get a base setup with VNC support that I could log into from school to work off of instead of having to use the local connection. Once I get VNC working on my network i'm pretty sure I can get it working beyond my local network.

As you can see I'm having issues with the libstdc++ lib being detected. I have it installed, but apparently not everything is setup properly. I also have an RPM file for VNC and I've tried to install it with the gnome shell but it gives me an error: "Can't install /home/[user]/Download/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm as no transaction" I'm not sure what that means. When I use the command line I get this:

Feb 6, 2010I installing Fedora 12. I did ALL the same as in the installation guide, GRUB installed into MBR. And after installation and rebooting - nothing happens, after BIOS messages there is nothing - computer hangs. GRUB seems to be not installedI have 2 hard disks. At first I tried to install on the 2-nd drive(it is slave). Afterward I detach one disk and try with only one hard disk(it is master). Nothing changes - computer hangs.

Aug 18, 2009I have F8 system that I have installed a fair amount of software on. When I started to install F10 I discovered that the file system is LVM (F8 default) which takes the entire disk (80G). I want to keep the F8 install but add F10 so I can migrate things to F10. So I need to:
1. Back up the system to USB HD so I can restore if things go wrong. Prefer to backup to a non-LVM partition (if that's reasonable). I don't really have any critical data but want to preserve the software installs and configurations that I have spent a lot of time sorting out.
2. Reduce the LVM partition to 20 G to make room for F10 and leave some unallocated space - say 30G for F10 and 30G unalocated.
3. Install F10 (on non-LVM partition) and keep both bootable. I have heard this may involve editing some grub files.
I have used SystemRescueCD a little and want to be able to use it on the F10 partition.

Jun 29, 2009I just updated from Fedora 8 to 10 to 11 today. When I run system-config-display I get the following message:

If I comment out that line, the next one fails, and so on. I installed a newer package, 1.1.3-2.fc11, because I thought maybe the installer didn't put it on and that behaves the same. Why this won't run? I would desperately like to use my widescreen monitor and I'm hoping that 11 will finally support my intel graphics correctly.

I now have about 50G free on a 80G drive. The F8 system has a small /boot and an LVM partition that includes swap. What I want to do is install F10 WITHOUT LVM on the free space. Access to the F8 LVM drive would be a plus but not complete necessary. I just want to keep the F8 system as is until I get set up with everything under f10, which may be a bit. I am not sure what to enter for mount points for the custom drive layout. I need a small swap partition (I don't want to use F8 swap because it will be going away in the future, for example when I install F12 and have dual boot F10/F12 system. What should I have as primary partitions and which as secondary?
How do I set up the boot? Grub?

Aug 28, 2010I have an old CPU with me that I'd like to convert into a server. It has no keyboard, no mouse, no monitor. It has a dvd drive, a CD-RW drive. How do I go about installing Fedora on this? I've researched some and found that kickstarts and vnc may be the way to go. Since I've never done this before, and never used either kickstarts or vnc before, can someone please provide a detailed guide? I'd be happy if the additional hard ware required (switch? hub?) etc. could also be mentioned.

I boot into Runlevel 1 to see the logs but there is no error. Then I run init 5 and it's stuck after the service ATD load. I don't want to do a clean install.

Jan 7, 2011After an upgrade (preupgrade) from Fedora 12 to 14, system-config-boot opens from the menu and displays the right information but does not change grub.conf. I have searched the forums and found nothing like this. It worked before the upgrade. I have forced a new install of system-config-boot. I can change grub.conf manually. There are no SElinux messages that I can find. It would be nice to get the gui working.

Feb 9, 2011I am currently running x86_64 F14. I am replacing the HDD(s) with one SSD and one HDD. What I want to do is a fresh install but pull all of the packages over from current install. I am planning on backing up /home and all of that so I can just rsync it. One of the issues though is that I currently use LVM. LVM does not support TRIM yet for the SSD. So I was just going to use ext4 and an extended partition for all of my filesystems. Can I just make a kickstart file that will have all of my current installed packages in it and pass that to the install? Seems like I remember that from my RHCE class. Sadly I don't use kickstart enough to remember.

May 26, 2011I upgraded F14 to F15 using installation DVD. I have been upgrading since F11 with no problems. Upgrade went well, no issue. After the reboot, the system hangs after the last line systemd.
These are last lines from boot.log:

Jan 31, 2009probably did something stupid.. just haven't figured out what yet.. hope someone can point me in the right direction. daughters computer broke, maybe virus, so i did clean reinstall of xp. decided to give her a couple of linux distros, thinking maybe they are safer for when she is surfing..
Used gparted to repartition hd:
Partition table entries are not in disk order
Installed Ubuntu 8.04. was then able to boot into either ubuntu or xp. next installed fedora 10. new menu.lst did not show ubuntu, only fedora and xp. had some lockups in fedora, and had to pull plug to reboot 2 or 3 times. replaced power supply. added ubuntu into menu.lst. boots into fedora and ubuntu fine. tried to boot xp, and get "Preparing System Recovery Option", then PC Angel appears, and it wants me to use the system restore option for xp.
Is there something i can do to recover xp without having to wipe the hd and reinstall xp, then reinstall ubuntu and fedora (and if i do all that, how can i be sure i don't end up with the same problem?

Fedora Installation :: System Hangs On M3A78-T Motherboard?
Mar 1, 2009I got an Asus M3A78-T motherboard last year, along with a Phenom 9650 CPU and 2GB of RAM. I originally tried to install Sabayon, but it would occasionally hang while running. I decided to give Fedora another try (wasn't happy with FC4 a few years back) at the constant chiding of my friend.
My first try was with the x86_64 Fedora 10 ISO, using an IDE hard drive and CDROM. It would hang a little bit into something like 'copying system files, at the same place every time. Thinking it was a bad burn, bad iso, or something (checksum and image verification passed) I went ahead and got the DVD ISO. The DVD would always hang a little bit into "Formatting file system." At this point, I have tried EVERY other combination of hardware - swapped out ram, CPU, PS, bought SATA hard drive and DVDROm drive, unplugged the mouse, and even the case pigtails for USB and Firewire. It always hangs in the same place. Somewhere along the process, I took the motherboard back and exchanged it for a new one. Still fails, and in exactly the same place.
The system hang is a hard lockup. Mouse freezes, no keyboard activity (even LED status changes.) The drive activity LED will go out and the progress bar stops advancing.
I'm surprised I'm not seeing anyone else with this problem - I thought this board was a bit more prevalent, but I'm guessing not! What's my next step? I would create a bug report, but I don't know what subsystem is causing the hang. I suspect SATA drivers, but I'm not sure how to test that.
And one other clue - I get a scrambled video screen before it comes up to the first X install screen:
It only lasts for 5 seconds or so, then comes up okay.

Mar 8, 2009Installing from live cd there aren't many choices for file system. If my info is correct reiser4fs can be used on fedora 10, if so how, if not what are the recommendations.
