today i've installed kubuntu with wubi for windows 7 on my hp pavilion dv6 with processor Intel Core i7 Q720 @1.60GHz with 4 Gb of RAM @ 64bit with NVIDIA Geforce GT 230M but i've had some problems.Infact the system continued to freeze after some minutes due to overheating so i restarted the computer and the Bios told me that to prevent damage to internal components the computer has been freezed. I repeated the process and i checked out the temperature with the desktop widget and it actually reached after some minutes 80-85 C so i cleaned the computer and the temperature turned back to normal (50-60C) but the problem continued to exist! After several minutes the computer freezed again and the BIOS told me the same things he told me before (90 and computer freezed due to prevent damage for overheating).

I have a LiveCD (DVD with many linux versions on it) and no other software on my computer at the moment. The computer specs are as follow:
When I use the live cd I get the following message: Cannot find root file system
I have tried the suggestion along the lines of:
Then it either goes back to Bash or I get "Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init"
Then my install just freezes there and I need to restart my computer.

I agree deleting .Xauthority files work, but thats not a good solution. I mean, everytime I have to run any X forwarding application I have to delete the .Xauthority file. Here is my scenarioThe applications that I want to run are on Linux Server [NFS] and the client machines [CIFS] that are having problem in locking theXauthority files are Macs which share the same domain as that of client solaris machine. i.e. The home directory of particular user on Solaris & the home directory of that user on Mac have same contents. When I ssh -X from Solaris to the server, everything works fine, no error messages. When I ssh -X from MACs to the server, I get the following warning messages.
Code:
/usr/X/bin/xauth: error in locking authority file /home/user/.Xauthority
/usr/X/bin/xauth is the path on the server. If I try to break the lock by sudo

I have a HP laptop that I have had Windows Vista on for about two years. I am soon going to switch it over to Ubuntu. My question is can you safely use the Ubuntu installation process to delete the Windows partition along with all the programs and files it stores on the hard drive or should you first uninstall Windows manually and then, with a essentially blank computer, install Ubuntu?

I am reinstalling ubuntu mavericks as I could not get the first install to work right. I installed from a CD that I burned. 3/4 of the way through the "installing system" process the screen went dead. The cursor does not respond nor does anything happen with the keyboard. Be aware that I don't know very many things about what a keyboard can do. The screen has been frozen for about a half hour now.

Now I can only boot into fedora which is lovely, but my windows is gone. Now I successfully mounted the ntfs partition windows was in, and the windows partition's fine and even the windows folder's still there but when I boot I only get the option for Fedora. Anyone knows how to fix it?

I was multitab browsing (around 15 tabs) in latest firefox for karmic koala (9.10) and at the same time downloading (probably already auto-installing) in synaptic-package-manager the package: textlive-fonts-extra (and other necessary packages; this was around 90 mb download and 250 mb installation)suddenly the pointer doesn't move anymore, (Alt+tab , and other combinations also didn't work anymore)
and I hold the power button untill the computer is turned off, when I reboot I get this message"invalid system disk, replace it and press any key to continue"now I'm using a livedisc to boot the computer (jaunty 9.04)To rebuild the system i think to manually install the packages that probably were interupted while installing and made it not work anymoreThe packages to be installed when text-live-fonts is marked for install (in synaptic opened from the livedisc) are:
dvipdfmx
lmodern
text-common
texlive-base
texlive-base-bin
[code]...
This may be different with 9.10 configuration (can anybody look to see which are necessary with 9.10) I think the computer wasn't responding anymore because I used too many tabs at ones. I had this same problem a few times before in the past weeks but then I wasn't installing something and the computer did restart and firefox restored all the tabs. I cannot enter /home/ from the livedisc (no permission) and it's necessary , I am in the middle of exams and i need to print the paper that is on the disc by monday Is there a way to enter it via command console?

I currently use my PC for work, music [I'm a DJ by profession], and gaming. It's got good specs and I've recently gotten a 500GB hard drive for it. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 [using the 9.10 CD and running update-manager --devel-release]. However, in my infinite foresight, I installed Ubuntu to take up the whole drive, /home and all. I've only used about 80GB of space in /home so backing it up to start off a triple boot shouldn't be a problem.
Currently, my partitioning is /dev/sda1 at 494GB [ext3, mounted as /], /dev/sda2 is a 6.2GB extended partition, and /dev/sda5 is a 6.2GB swap partition. Basically, I need to do the following things, but don't know the least hacky way around it.
1) Repartition to make the Ubuntu's root filesystem take up ~40GB of space
2) Probably have the swap partition immediately after / (is the other extended partition even necessary?)
3) Install Windows 7 to use for gaming in a 60GB partition
4) Windows XP to use for music production in another 60GB part
5) Have the rest of the space on the hard drive formatted as NTFS & used for documents for Windows 7 (as D:), Windows XP (also as D:), and Ubuntu (used as /home/saxon).
Any pointers? I've searched around but I couldn't find anyone else with my exact problem - most people have Windows installed first and only want a dual boot. I'm fairly comfortable with the shell so I'm not too bothered about using Term either. Sorry if I've worded this awfully or seemed like a bit of an idiot

I have been using for over a year now, my 64-bit computer first with Fedora 8 and now with Fedora 10 with 2Gb of RAM just fine. Today I purchased an extra 2Gb for the system and upon installation from the GRUB screen Fedora 10 simply won't boot. It does boot with 3Gb, and it doesn't matter which stick I use for the 3Gb configuration, or what slot do I put the sticks into the motherboard, however if I place the four sticks, F10 simply won't boot. Should I pass a command line argument tot he kernel? If so, which?

Background: I need some help regarding install X server/apps on a headless(ie. no monitor, no graphic device) server. The server is in fact a virtual one by Amazon EC2. So there's no monitor nor any graphics hardware. Fedora server (6, i believe) is pre-packaged. The problem is that I want to be running a server app with a GUI. The app won't start without the GUI (and I probably need to tweak a few things through its GUI too).
I plan on setting up very very bare minimal X on the server and then uses NX for remote access. Can somebody shed some light here?
Simply put, my questions are:
1) What would be the minimal list of package i need to install?
2) Where can I find docs about installing and setting up NX? I could only find very fragmented/outdated docs about it.

After lots of trouble with the new Nvidia stuff in Fedora 12 I gave up and am trying to switch to an ATI Radeon 4350 card in the existing system.I have removed the Nvidia refs with rpm -e, deleted /etc/X11/xorg*, and installed the card. I am only able to get a maximum resolution of 1024x768. Here's what I've done:
Boot and su/delete all refs: /etc/X11/xorg*
Reboot. System comes up with 1024x768
Select Administration->Display to run system-config-display.
Su/password dialogue
[code]....
If I try to add a mode line following Depth 24, It is ignored by system-config-display and overwritten. This worked with the Nvidia installation and I was able to select my resolution above 1024x768.

Having a problem with my system hanging after updating Fedora 12. Here are my system specs:
Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard
AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core
6 gig Corsair DDR 800
1 x 160 gig SATA (OS)
1 x 500 gig SATA (data)
I have my system configured for dual boot with Windows 7. After installing F12, I can reboot with no problem. However, after I install the kmod-nvidia drivers, my system hangs on reboot. If I press any key on the keyboard, it will start to load, the freeze until I press a key again. I have tried both Fedora 12 x64 and i386 with the same results. Here are the steps that I took to install the kmod-nvidia drivers code...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

I installed 10.4 on my Satellite Pro via CD replacing XP. Screen resolution is now only 800x600 which fills only 3/4 of available screen space and there are no greater options in System Preferences Monitors. It is also operating rather slower than the previous OS, maybe these two issues are connected? I have checked Administration for any required Proprietary Drivers. There is just one for a modem which is activated. During installation I aborted it then closed down and restarted, which may have affected the process?

I just started using OpenSUSE on an old laptop. It seems that I have my graphical problems at least temporarily solved, but I continued to lose my wireless connection after an hour of use. This is an old and well supported chipset (RT2500) and I had never had any issues with it before. I use WPA security, and one kind poster suggested I had a line for using the old "wext" driver in the /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-wlan0 file, and that seems to have sorted it since I have not had any further issues since doing that edit. I eventually found the information on my own:
# Note: This option requires a wpa driver supporting it, like
# the 'nl80211' driver used by default since openSUSE 11.3.

after a fresh installation of the English version (Live CD installer) of Fedora 12 (Gnome) I would like to set the default system language to German. But I would like to have the whole Gnome desktop in German. What is the recommended place in Fedora to set this? /etc/profile or are there any Fedora specific configuration files for this purpose?Btw, the GDM login screen doesn't provide the German language as a choice. Do I miss a package? I already browsed the DE packages for localization packages I did not install but it seems there is no one missing.

After searching online and in these forums I found two different ways of installing the Nvidia drivers in fedora 12. If you haven't yet installed the the repos then:
Code:
su
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
First way:
as su
(1)
yum --enablerepo=rp*g install kmod-nvidia.$(uname -m) xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.x86_64
[Code]...
I used the first way and everything seems to work fine. Compiz-fusion works good but i did have to add vga=795 to /boot/grub/grub.conf to get the graphical boot loader to work again. Should I have used the second method? What is the difference in these two ways? Most notably the second steps. Is one way better or preferred over the other? From my understanding you must do this because of the nouveau driver.

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.
Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)
1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:
2. Then load up the language support application:
3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.
4. Fix'd
I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

I had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.
Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.
I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:
NvidiaDriverSwitching
I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.
jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.
I tried installing nvidia-current via apt-get and I get these errors:
Code:
Setting up nvidia-current (260.19.06-0ubuntu1) ...
Removing old nvidia-current-260.19.06 DKMS files...
